More than 2,500 years ago,

زیاتر لە ٢٥٠٠ ساڵ لەمەوبەر،

one of ancient Greece’s most celebrated popstars and erotic poets

یەکێک لە گۆرانی بێژە بەناوبانگەکانی یۆنانی کۆن و شاعیرە رەگەزپەرستەکان

enraptured listeners.

گوێگرانی دڵخۆش کرد.

In one legend, a prominent Athenian heard his nephew singing one of their songs

لە ئەفسانەیەک، ئەسینیەکی دیار گوێی لە برازاکەی خۆی بوو کە یەکێک لە گۆرانیەکانی—

and enjoyed it so much that he asked the boy to teach it to him—

—دەگوتەوە و زۆر دڵخۆش بوو بەوەی کە پرسیاری لە کوڕەکە کرد تا فێری بکات—

“So that I may learn it and die,” he said.

ئەو وتی: ”لەوانەئە فێری ببم و بمرم”

So, who was this revered figure?

کەواتە ئەم کەسایەتییە بەڕێزە کێبوو؟

Her name was Sappho.

ناوی سافۆ بوو.

She lived on the Greek island of Lesbos around 600 BCE.

ئەو دەژیا لە لێسبۆس لە دورگەی یۆنان لە دەوروبەری ٦٠٠ ساڵ پ.ز.

Like other singer-songwriters of the time,

وەک گۆرانی بێژ و گۆرانی نوسەکانی تر،

she sang while playing the lyre,

لەگەڵ لێدانی قیسارە (مۆسیقا)کە گۆرانی گوت،

a stringed instrument from which the term “lyrics” is derived.

ئامێرێک زنجیردارە کە لە دەستەواژەی “هۆنراوە” وەرگیراوە.

But Sappho lyrics offered a uniquely intimate perspective

بەڵام سافۆ گۆرانییەکی بێ وێنە و بەرچاوی پێشکەش کرد

on love, passion, and longing.

لە خۆشەویستی، سۆز و پەرۆشیدا.

She’s the first on record to combine the words “bitter” and “sweet,” for instance,

ئەو یەکەم تۆمارە بۆ بەستنەوەی “تاڵ” و “شیرن”، بۆ نمونە،

to describe at once the thrills and devastations of romance.

بۆ باسکردنی تام و تێکدانی رۆمانسیەت یەک جار.

Sappho was an aristocrat thought to have married a man,

سافۆ بەگزادەیەک بوو، کە پێی وابوو پێویستە شوو بە پیاوێک بکات،

though none of her surviving work mentions him.

هەرچەندە هیچ یەکێک لە کارەکان ناوی ناهێنن.

It does reference other family as well as festivals,

ئاماژە بە خێزانەکانی تر و هەروەها ڤئستیڤاڵیش دەکات،

colorful clothing, and growing old.

پیر بوون و جل و بەرگی رەنگاوڕەنگ.

But Sappho is best known for her lyrics about homoerotic desire for women.

بەڵام سافۆ بە گۆرانییەکانی دەربارەی حەزی بۆ جوانی ئافرەت زۆر باش دەناسرێت.

In one song, as her female companion departs tearfully, Sappho says,

سافۆ دەڵێت: لە گۆرانییەک، وەک هاوڕێ ئافرەتەکانی بە گریانەوە کۆچی کرد،

“let me remind you / ... the lovely times we shared.”

“لێمگەڕێ بەبیرتی بێنمەوە \… ئەو کاتە خۆشانەی کە بە یەکمان بەخشی.”

She describes flower garlands, perfumes, “and,” she says,

ئەو باسی تاجەگوڵینەکان، بۆنەکانی دەکرد، هەروەها دەیگوت،

“on soft beds / ... you quenched your desire.”

“لەسەر جێگا نەرمەکان \.. تۆ خواستی خۆتت کوژاندەوە.”

In another, she describes a friend in a distant city,

لەلایەکەی تر، ئەو باسی هاوڕێیەکی دەکرد لە شارێکی دوور،

“Pacing far away, her gentle heart devoured by powerful desire,

“لە دوورە هەنگاودەنێت، ئەو دڵە ناسکەی بە ئاواتی گەورەوە لە ناوچوو،

she remembers slender Atthis.”

ئەو یادگاریە کۆن و بێ هێزەکانی بیردەکەوێتەوە.”

The word “Lesbian” means someone from Lesbos,

وشەی “لێسبیان” واتە کەسێک لە لێسبۆس هاتبێت،

but, because of Sappho, it now also describes a woman who’s gay.

بەڵام، لەبەر سافۆ، دووبارە وەسفی ئافرەتێک دەکات کە هاوڕەگەز خواز بێت.

In ancient Greece, the norm was for everyone to marry and have children.

لە نەریتی یۆنانی کۆن وابوو، کە هەر کەسێک هاوسەرگیری بکات و منداڵیان ببێت.

While men were usually permitted to have homosexual relationships

لەکاتێکدا عادەتەن پیاو رێگەی پێنەدەدرا کە پەیوەندی لەگەڵ رەگەزی خۆی هەبێت

based on their status, women weren’t.

بە پشت بەستن بە دۆخە، بۆ ئافرەتیش رێگە پێنەدراوبوو.

But it appears that, on Lesbos at this time,

بەڵام لەو کاتەدا لە لێسبۆس بەدەرکەوت،

aristocratic women generally had more freedom.

ژنانی بەگزادە ئازادییەکی زیاتریان هەبوو.

Yet the details of Sappho’s life remain mysterious,

تایبەتمەندیەکانی ژیانی سافۆ هێشتا بە نهێنی مایەوە،

partially because only fragments of her poetry survive.

لەبەرئەوەی تەنها پارچە شعرەکانی رزگاری دەبێت.

In ancient times, however, so much of it persisted

هەرچەندە لە سەردەمی کۆندا، زۆربەیان بەردەوام بوون

that it seemed it would last forever.

کە پێدەچوو بۆ تاهەتایە کۆتاییان بێت.

Admirers performed Sappho cover songs and committed her poetry

ستایشکەرەکان بەرگی گۆرانیەکانی سافۆیان پێشکەش کرد و شعرەکەیان راسپارد

to papyrus, parchment, and pottery.

بۆ زەل، کاغەزی تەنک و گلێنە.

Three centuries after Sappho’s death,

سێ سەدە دوای مردنی سافۆ،

a Greek author declared that her words would endure

نوسەرێکی یۆنانی رایگەیاند کە وشەکانی ئازار دەبەخشێ

“as long as ships sail from the Nile.”

“هەتاوەکو کەشتیەکان دەپەڕنەوە لە نیل”

Another century later,

سەدەیەک دواتر،

the Library of Alexandria housed nine scrolls of her work,

کتێبخانەی ئەلێکساندرا ٩ قودی لە نوسینی ئەوی لە خۆگرت،

numbering over 10,000 lines.

زیاتر لە ١٠ هەزار دێر دەبێت.

But natural forces eroded the collection.

بەڵام دیاردە سروشتییەکان کۆکردنەوەکایان داخوراند.

And monks, tasked with preserving ancient writing,

هەروەها قەشەکان ئەرکی پاراستنی نوسینە کۆنەکانیان پێ سپێردرابوو،

likely neglected or destroyed her work.

لەوانەیە کارەکەی پشتگوێ خرابێت یان لەناوچووبێت.

One 2nd century Christian leader called Sappho

سەرکردەی سەدەی دووەم پێی دەگوترێت سافۆ

“a whore who sang about her own licentiousness.”

“داوێن پیسێک کە گۆرانی دەربارەی بێ ئابڕووی خۆی دەگووت.”

Later, a Pope and Archbishop ordered her poetry burned.

دواتر، پاپایەک و گەورە قەشەیەک داوایان کرد کە شعرەکەی بسوتێندرێت.

Almost all of it had vanished by the Middle Ages.

بە نزیکەیی لە سەدەکانی ناوەڕاست هەمووی لەناو چووبوو.

Then, about a century ago,

پاشان، سەدەیەک پێش ئێستا،

people began rediscovering Sappho’s poetry—

خەڵک دەستیان کرد بە دۆزینەوەی شعرەکانی سافۆ—

in locations like an ancient Egyptian garbage dump.

لە ناوچەی میرسڕیە بێزمانەکان و پاشماوەکانیان.

Now, we have around 700 lines,

ئێستا نزیکەی ٧٠٠ دێرمان هەیە،

representing less than 10% of Sappho’s total known work.

پشاندانی کەمتر لە ١٠٪ی هەموو کارەکانی سافۆ.

We only have one complete poem of hers.

ئێمە تەنها یەک شعری تەواوی ئەومان هەیە.

About a dozen others are substantial, but most are mere fragments.

نزیکەی دەرزەنێکی ترمان هەیە، بەڵام زۆربەیان تەواو نین و پارچە شعرن.

New pieces of Sappho’s songs probably will be found.

دەشێی پارچە نوێیەکانی گۆرانی سافۆ بدۆزرێنەوە.

Some may already be sitting in museum archives,

لەوانەیە هەندێکیان پێشتر لە ئەرشیفی مۆزەخانە هەڵگیرابێتن،

to be revealed when technology allows scholars

بۆئەوەی کاتێک تەکنەلۆجیا رێگە بە زانایان دەدات ئاشکرا بکرێت

to read through scrolls too fragile to unroll.

بۆ خوێندنەوەی لەناو قودیەکانن کە ئاسانە بۆ کردنەوەیان.

What we are currently left with is an incomplete record—

ئەوەی ئێستا ماونەتەوە تۆمارێکی ناتەواوە

and many historical rumors.

لەگەڵ چەندین دەنگۆی مێژووی.

Ovid insisted that Sappho fell in love with a ferryman

ئۆڤید لە جیاتی ئەوەی کە سافۆ هەست بە خۆشەویستی بکات لەگەڵ بەرێوبەرێک

and, upon being rejected, leapt from a cliff to her death.

لەسەر رەتکردنەوەی، لە کەندێکەوە خۆی فڕێدەدات بۆ مردنی خۆی.

Another tale asserts that she ran a girls’ school

چیرۆکێکی تر دڵنیات دەکاتەوە کە ئەو کچە بۆ قوتابخانەی کچان چووە

and those mentioned in her poems were merely students

و ئەوانەی لە شعرەکانی ئاماژەیان پێکراوە بە تەنها قوتابین

for whom she felt platonic affection.

بۆ ئەو کەسەی کە هەستی بە سۆزێکی نموونەی دەکرد.

Current consensus is that these stories,

کۆدەنگی ئێستا بریتییە لەوەی کە ئەو چرۆکانە،

which ridicule Sappho or deny her work’s homoeroticism,

کە گاڵتە بە سافۆ دەکەن یان دان بە کارەکانی و راکێشانی سەرنجیان دانانێن،

are probably all untrue artifacts of misogyny and homophobia.

لەوانەیە هەمووی هەڵبەستراوبن لەبەر رق لێ بوونەوە لە ژنان و هۆمۆفۆبیا.

Despite the distortions of the intervening millennia,

سەڕای هەزارەها دەست تێوەردان و شێواندنەکان،

Sappho’s words reach across time and resonate today.

ئەمرۆ وتەکانی سافۆ دەنگ دەدەنەوە بە درێژایی کات.

More than 2,000 years ago, she wrote:

زیاتر لە ٢٠٠٠ ساڵ لەمەوبەر، دەینووسی:

“I say someone in another time will remember us”

“ من دەڵێم کەسێک لە کاتێکی تر ئێمەی بەبیر دێتەوە”

And, thankfully, we do.

و بە سوپاسگوزارییەوە ئێمە ئەومان لەبیرە.
