The “myth” of the boiling frog

Two frogs are minding their own business in the swamp when WHAM—

دوو بۆق سەرقاڵی کاری خۆیان بوون لە زۆگاوەکەدا لە وهام-

they’re kidnapped.

ڕفێندران.

They come to in a kitchen, captives of a menacing chef.

وەکو دیلێک لە لایەن چێشت لێنەرەکە، هێنرانە ناو چێشتخانەکە.

He boils up a pot of water and lobs one of the frogs in.

مەنجەڵەکی ئاو گەرم کرد و بۆقەکەی خستە ناوی.

But it’s having none of this.

بەڵام بێجگە لەوەش.

The second its toes hit the scalding water it jumps right out the window.

لەو کاتەی بۆقەکە هەستی بەگەرمی ئاوەکە کرد یەکسەر هاتە دەرەوە ز لە پەنجەرە چووە دەرەوە.

The chef refills the pot, but this time he doesn’t turn on the heat.

بەڵام چێشت لێنەرەکە ئەو جارە مەنجەڵەکەی پڕ کردەوە بەڵام ئاگرەکەی دانەگیرساند.

He plops the second frog in, and this frog’s okay with that.

بۆقی دووەمی خستە ناو مەنجەڵەکە، بەڵام باش بوو هیچ کێشەیەکی نەبوو.

The chef turns the heat on, very low, and the temperature of water slowly rises.

چێشت لێنەرەکە بە هێواشی ئاگرەکەی پێکرد، و پلەی گەرمی ئاوەکە وردە وردە بەرز بووە.

So slowly that the frog doesn’t notice.

ئینجا بە هێواشی بۆقەکە هیچ هەستی پێنەکرد.

In fact, it basks in the balmy water.

لە ڕاستیدا، بۆقەکە لە ناو ئاوەکە مەلەی دەکرد.

Only when the surface begins to bubble does the frog realize: it’s toast.

و تەنها کاتەک ئاوەکە دەستی بە بڵقە بڵق کرد بۆقە پێزانی کە ئەو دەبرژێ.

What’s funny about this parable is that it’s not scientifically true... for frogs.

In reality, a frog will detect slowly heating water and leap to safety.

لەڕاستیدا، بۆقەکان هەست بە نزمترین پلەی گەرمی ئاو دەکەن و خێرا خۆیان ڕزگار دەکەن.

Humans, on the other hand, are a different story.

دەربارەی مرۆڤەکانیش چیرۆکی جیاوازتر بوونیان هەیە.

We’re perfectly happy to sit in the pot and slowly turn up the heat,

ئێمە هیچ کێشەیەکمان نییە لە ناو مەنجەڵەک ئاو دانیشین و بە هێواشی پلەی گەرمی بەرز بێ

all the while insisting it isn’t our hand on the dial,

arguing about whether we can trust thermometers,

and questioning— even if they’re right, does it matter?

و پرسیارکردن- ئەگەر ئەوانە ڕاستیش بن، هیچ کێشەیەکی تێدا هەیە؟

It does.

بەڵێ تێیدا هەیە.

Since 1850, global average temperatures have risen by 1 degree Celsius.

پلەی گەرمی جیهانی بەرز بووەوە بۆ ١ پلەی سلیزی لە ساڵی ١٨٥٠.

That may not sound like a lot, but it is.

ڕەنگە ئەوە زۆر نەبێت بەلاتەوە، بەڵام زۆرە.

Why? 1 degree is an average.

بۆچی؟ ١ پلەی سیلیزی زۆرە.

Many places have already gotten much warmer than that.

هەندێک لە شوێنەکان زۆر لەوە زیاتر توشی گەرم بوون.

Some places in the Arctic have already warmed 4 degrees.

هەندێک شوێن لە ناوچەی جەمسەری باکوور گەرمیان بە ڕێژەی ٤ پلەی سلیزی بەرزبۆتەوە.

If global average temperatures increase 1 more degree,

ئەگەر پلەی گەرمی زەوی ١ پلەی تر بەرز بێتتەوە،

the coldest nights in the Arctic might get 10 degrees warmer.

ئەو ناوچە ساردەکانی جەمسەری باکوور بە بڕی ١٠ پلە پلەی گەرمیان بەرز دەبێتەوە.

The warmest days in Mumbai might get 5 degrees hotter.

ڕەنگە لە مۆمبایی بە بڕی ٥ پلە پلەی گەرمی بەرز بێتەوە.

So how did we get here?

ئینجا چۆن ئێمە دەتوانین بەرگەی ئەوە بگرین؟

Almost everything that makes modern life possible relies on fossil fuels:

زۆربەی ئەو شتانەی کە ژیانی ئێستایان بۆ ئاسان کردووین بە سوتەمەنی بەردین کاردەکەن:

coal, oil, and gas full of carbon from ancient organic matter.

وەک خەڵوز، نەوت، بەنزین ئەو ماددە سروشتیانەش پڕن لە کاربۆن.

When we burn fossil fuels,

کاتێک سەرچاوە سروشتییەکان بەکاردەهێنین،

we release carbon dioxide that builds up in our atmosphere,

دوانە ئۆکسیدی کاربۆن دەردەدرێت کە ئەمەش دەبێتە هۆی زیادبوونی بڕەکەی لە هەوادا،

where it remains for hundreds or even thousands of years,

کە بۆ سەدەها یان، تەنانەت هەزاران ساڵ دەمێنێتەوە،

letting heat in, but not out.

کە دەبێتە هۆی بەرزبونەوەی پلەی گەرمی، بەڵام نابێتە هۆی نزم بوونەوەی.

The heat comes from sunlight, which passes through the atmosphere to Earth,

کە ئەو گەرمییەی لە خۆرەوە دێت بە بەرگە هەوای هەسارەکەمان تێپەڕ دەبێت،

where it gets absorbed and warms everything up.

کاتێک لە لایەن بەرگە هەواوە هەڵدەمژرێ دەبێتە هۆی بەرزبونەوەی هەموو شتەکان.

Warm objects emit infrared radiation, which should pass back out into space,

شتە گەرم داهاتووەکان تیشکی ژێر سوور دەداتە کە ڕەنگە دواتر بچێتە دەرەوەی زەوی،

because most atmospheric gases don’t absorb it.

ئەوەش لەبەرئەوەی زۆرینەی گازەکانی بەرگە هەوا ئەوە هەڵنامژن.

But greenhouse gases— carbon dioxide and methane—

do absorb infrared wavelengths.

So when we add more of those gases to the atmosphere,

و کاتێک بڕێکی زۆر زیاتر لەو گازانە دەنێرینە بەرگە هەوا،

less heat makes it back out to space, and our planet warms up.

و گەرمیەکی کەم وا دەکات ئەو تیشکانە بچنە دەرەوەی زەوی و هەسارەکەمان توشی گەرم دەکا.

If we keep emitting greenhouse gases at our current pace,

ئەگەر بەردەوام بین لە هەناردە کردنی گازەکانی خانووە پلاستیکەکان،

scientists predict temperatures will rise 4 degrees

ئەو کاتە زاناکان باوەڕیان وایە پلەی گەرمی بە بڕی ٤ پلە بەرز دەبێتەوە

from their pre-industrial levels by 2100.

لە کاتی پیشەسازی بنەڕەتییەوە تا ساڵی ٢١٠٠.

They’ve identified 1.5 degrees of warming—

ئەوەیان زانیوە کە بە بڕی ١.٥ پلەی گەرمی-

global averages half a degree warmer than today’s—

as a threshold beyond which the negative impacts of climate change

To keep from crossing that threshold,

we need to get our greenhouse gas emissions down to zero

as fast as possible.

Or rather, we have to get emissions down to what's called net zero,

meaning we may still be putting some greenhouse gases into the atmosphere,

but we take out as much as we put in.

This doesn’t mean we can just keep emitting and sequester all that carbon—

ئەوەش مانای وا نییە کە ئێمە دەبێ لەو ئەو هەموو کاربۆنە خۆمان ڕزگار بکەین-

we couldn’t keep up with our emissions through natural methods,

ئێمە ناتوانین لە ڕێگەی ڕێبازە سروشتیە کانەوە خۆمان لەو دەردراوانە دەرباز بکەین،

and technological solutions would be prohibitively expensive

چارەسەری زانستی لەوانەیە زۆر قورس و دژوار بێ

and require huge amounts of permanent storage.

Instead, while we switch from coal, oil, and natural gas

لە جیاتی بەکارهێنانی خەڵوز، نەوت و گازە سروشتییەکان

to clean energy and fuels, which will take time,

پێویستە دەست بکەین بە بەکارهێنانی وزە و سەرچاوەی خاوێنکراو، و کاتێکی زۆر دەخایەنێ،

we can mitigate the damage by removing carbon from the atmosphere.

Jumping out of the proverbial pot isn’t an option,

خۆ ڕزگار کردن لە مەنجەڵەکە کۆتا هەڵبژاردە نییە،

but we can do something the frogs can’t:

بەڵام دەتوانین شتێک بکەین کە بۆقەکان ناتوانن بیکەن:

reach over, and turn down the heat.
