I'm Esther and in this video I'm going to teach you how to ask someone for permission

ငါ Est သတာပါ။ ဒီဗီဒီယိုထဲမှာတစ်ယောက်ယောက်ကိုခွင့်ပြုချက်တောင်းဖို့သင်ပေးမယ်

Okay so before I teach you that,

အိုကေဒါငါမသင်ခင်၊

let's first talk about what permission means.

ခွင့်ပြုချက်ဆိုတာဘာကိုအရင်ပြောကြရအောင်။

Okay so...

အိုကေ ...

When you want to ask someone if it's okay to do something, you're asking for permission.

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်ကိုတစ်ခုခုလုပ်ဖို့အဆင်ပြေမလားမေးရင်မင်းခွင့်ပြုချက်တောင်းတာပေါ့။

Okay again, you want to do something, you don't know if it's okay, so you ask someone.

တဖန်အဆင်ပြေ, သင်တစ်ခုခုလုပ်ချင်တယ်, အဆင်ပြေရဲ့မသိရ, ဒါကြောင့်သင်တစ်စုံတစ် ဦး ကိုမေးပါ။

For example, maybe you want to borrow something.

ဥပမာအားဖြင့်၊ သင်ကတစ်ခုခုငှားချင်တယ်။

Then you should ask someone.

ထိုအခါသင်သည်တစ်စုံတစ် ဦး ကိုမေးမြန်းသင့်ပါတယ်။

If you just take it that's stealing, right?

မင်းခိုးယူလိုက်တာလား

So you have to ask.

ဒါကြောင့်သင်မေးရန်ရှိသည်။

Is it okay? Alright?

အဆင်ပြေလား ကောင်းပြီလား

So there are three ways to ask for permission in English.

ခွင့်ပြုချက်တောင်းရန်အတွက်နည်းလမ်းသုံးမျိုးရှိပါသည်။

The first way is to say, "Can I...?" "Can I...?" Okay.

ပထမနည်းက "ငါ ... ငါလုပ်နိုင်သလား" "ငါ ... နိုင်လား" အိုကေ။

The second way is "Could I...?" "Could I...?"

ဒုတိယနည်းလမ်းမှာ "ငါလုပ်နိုင်မှာလား။ " "ငါ ... နိုင်မလား"

And the third way is, "May I...?" "May I...?" Okay.

တတိယနည်းက "ငါ ... လုပ်လို့ရမလား?" "ရမလား...?" အိုကေ။

So 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' are all good ways to ask for permission.

ဒီတော့ 'ငါလုပ်နိုင်'၊ 'ငါလုပ်နိုင်' ပြီး 'ငါ' အားလုံးကောင်းတယ် ခွင့်ပြုချက်တောင်းရန်နည်းလမ်းများ။

But the third one, 'may I', is more polite. Okay.

သို့သော်တတိယအချက်မှာ 'ငါဖြစ်' 'သည် ပို၍ ယဉ်ကျေးသောသဘောဖြစ်သည်။ အိုကေ။

So if you want to ask somebody who has more power,

ဒီတော့မင်းမှာအာဏာပိုရှိသူကိုမေးချင်တယ်ဆိုရင်၊

maybe your parents, may be your teacher,

မင်းမိဘတွေဖြစ်နိုင်တယ် မင်းဆရာဖြစ်မယ်

then you should say 'may I'.

ထိုအခါသင်သည် 'ငါဖွစျနိုငျ' ဟုပြောသင့်သည်။

Maybe even to somebody that you don't know very well,

သင်ကောင်းစွာမသိသောတစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်သို့ပင်ဖြစ်ကောင်းဖြစ်နိုင်သည်။

it's better to say may I because again it's more polite.

ငါပြောတာကပိုကောင်းတယ်၊

So let's look at these examples.

ဒီတော့ဒီဥပမာတွေကိုကြည့်ရအောင်။

Okay so I've written 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' on the board.

အိုကေဒါဆိုငါလုပ်နိုင်တယ်၊ ငါလုပ်နိုင်မယ်၊ ငါလည်းလုပ်မယ် ဘုတ်အဖွဲ့အပေါ်။

Remember, after these three, you have to say a verb.

ဤသုံးပါးပြီးနောက်သင်ကြိယာပြောရန်သတိရပါ။

Okay so let's look at the verbs.

ကောင်းပြီဒါဆိုကြိယာတွေကိုကြည့်ရအောင်။

'help' 'see' 'have' 'call' 'borrow' 'go' 'speak' and 'go' again.

'help' 'see' 'have' 'call' 'loan' 'go' 'speak' နှင့် 'go' again ။

Okay so I know I went through that a little bit quickly but

အိုကေဒါငါသွားတယ်သိတယ် နည်းနည်းလျင်မြန်စွာကြောင်းမှတဆင့်

we're going to go through it slowly now.

ငါတို့အခုဖြည်းဖြည်းချင်းဖြတ်သန်းသွားမယ်

Okay so here's what we'll do.

အိုကေဒါဒီမှာငါတို့ပြုပါလိမ့်မယ်အဘယျသို့။

I'm going to read and try to switch some around. Okay?

ငါဖတ်ပြီးကြိုးစားမယ် ပတ်ပတ်လည်အချို့ပြောင်းပါ။ အိုကေလား

So... "Can I help you?"

ဒီတော့ ... "ငါမင်းကိုကူညီနိုင်မလား?"

"Can I help you?"

"ကူညီပါရစေ?"

let's try that a little bit faster.

နည်းနည်းပိုမြန်အောင်စမ်းကြည့်ရအောင်

"Can I help you?"

"ကူညီပါရစေ?"

"Can I help you?"

"ကူညီပါရစေ?"

Now remember, you can also say 'could I' and 'may I'.

အခုမှတ်ထားရမယ် 'ငါလုပ်နိုင်' ပြီး 'ငါလုပ်နိုင်မယ်'

For example, if you're walking through a department store,

ဥပမာအားဖြင့်၊ ကုန်တိုက်,

and the salesperson comes to you,

ရောင်းသူကလည်း၊

they would probably say, "May I help you?" because they want to be polite to the customer.

သူတို့က "မင်းကိုငါကူညီနိုင်မလား" ဟုပြောလိမ့်မည် ဘာဖြစ်လို့လဲဆိုတော့သူတို့ကဖောက်သည်ကိုယဉ်ကျေးချင်တယ်။

So again, "May I help you?"

ဒီတော့နောက်တဖန် "မင်းကိုငါကူညီနိုင်မလား"

Okay.

အိုကေ။

"Can I see you again?"

တဖန်ငါကြည့်ရှု ဦး မည်လော။

"Can I see you again?"

တဖန်ငါကြည့်ရှု ဦး မည်လော။

A little bit faster.

နည်းနည်းပိုမြန်

"Can I see you again?"

တဖန်ငါကြည့်ရှု ဦး မည်လော။

Maybe you like someone you met them and you like them

သင်သူတို့နှင့်တွေ့ဆုံဖူးသူနှင့်သင်ကြိုက်နှစ်သက်သူဖြစ်ကောင်းဖြစ်လိမ့်မည်

and you want to see them again next time,

နောက်တစ်ခါထပ်တွေ့ချင်တယ်၊

So you say, "Can I see you again?"

ဒါဆိုမင်းက "မင်းကိုထပ်တွေ့မလား?"

Okay.

အိုကေ။

"Can I have some water?"

"ငါရေအနည်းငယ်ရနိုင်မလား"

"Can I have some water?"

"ငါရေအနည်းငယ်ရနိုင်မလား"

A little bit faster.

နည်းနည်းပိုမြန်

"Can I have some water?"

"ငါရေအနည်းငယ်ရနိုင်မလား"

Okay.

အိုကေ။

Let's try a couple with 'could'.

'နိုင်' နဲ့စုံတွဲတစ်တွဲကိုစမ်းကြည့်ရအောင်။

"Could I call you later?"

"နောက်မှမင်းကိုဖုန်းဆက်လို့ရမလား"

"Could I call you later?"

"နောက်မှမင်းကိုဖုန်းဆက်လို့ရမလား"

Again, remember, you can use all three, but we're doing 'could'.

တနည်းကား၊ သင်သုံးခုလုံးကိုသုံးနိုင်သည်၊ ငါတို့မူကားလုပ်နိုင်သည် 'ဟုဆိုကြ၏။

"Could I call you later?"

"နောက်မှမင်းကိုဖုန်းဆက်လို့ရမလား"

"Could I borrow some money?"

ပိုက်ဆံချေးလို့ရမလား

Okay. You usually borrow money from a friend or somebody that you know,

အိုကေ။ သင်ဟာသူငယ်ချင်းတစ်ယောက်ဒါမှမဟုတ်သင်သိတဲ့သူတစ်ယောက်ယောက်ဆီကပိုက်ဆံချေးလေ့ရှိတယ်၊

so that's why it's better to say maybe 'can I' or 'could I'.

ဒါကြောင့်ငါပြောနိုင်တာကငါလုပ်နိုင်တာလား၊

"Could I borrow some money?"

ပိုက်ဆံချေးလို့ရမလား

Okay.

အိုကေ။

"Could I go?"

"ငါသွားနိုင်မလား"

"Could I go?"

"ငါသွားနိုင်မလား"

You want to leave, so you're asking if it's okay.

သင်စွန့်ခွာချင်သောကြောင့်အဆင်ပြေမလားမေးနေသည်။

"Could I go?"

"ငါသွားနိုင်မလား"

Okay and remember 'may I' is polite okay

အိုကေ၊ 'မေငါ' ကိုယဉ်ယဉ်ကျေးကျေးယဉ်ကျေးတယ်ဆိုတာသတိရပါ

you want to say that to someone who's a little bit more important,

မင်းကမင်းကိုပြောချင်တာ နည်းနည်းပိုအရေးကြီးတယ်၊

maybe someone you don't know.

သင်မသိသောတစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်နိုင်သည်။

Again you would use 'may I'.

တဖန်ငါ 'may ငါ' 'ကိုအသုံးပြုလိမ့်မယ်။

So "May I speak to mr. Kim?"

ဒီတော့ "ငါမစ္စတာကင်နဲ့စကားပြောလို့ရမလား"

Maybe you called his office, okay, so you say,

ခင်ဗျားကသူ့ရုံးခန်းကိုဖုန်းဆက်လို့ကောင်းပြီ၊

"May I speak to mr. Kim?"

"မစ္စတာကင်နဲ့ကျွန်တော်စကားပြောလို့ရမလား"

And the last one -

နောက်ဆုံးတစ်ခုက

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"ငါရေချိုးခန်းကိုသွားနိုင်မလား"

This one is maybe if you're asking a teacher.

သင်တစ် ဦး မေးလျှင်ဤတစ်ခုဖြစ်နိုင်သည် ဆရာ။

Right? You're in class and you have to go, you can ask a teacher

ဟုတ်လား မင်းကအတန်းထဲမှာရှိနေပြီးသင်သွားရမယ်၊ သင်ဆရာတစ် ဦး ကိုမေးမြန်းနိုင်ပါတယ်

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"ငါရေချိုးခန်းကိုသွားနိုင်မလား"

Again, 'can I' 'could' 'can' and 'could' are both okay.

တနည်းကား၊ 'ငါလုပ်နိုင်' 'လုပ်နိုင်' နှင့် 'နိုင်' နှစ် ဦး စလုံးအဆင်ပြေသည်။

But maybe it's more polite....

ဒါပေမယ့်ဒါကပိုပြီးယဉ်ကျေးသိမ်မွေ့ပါတယ် ....

If you want to be polite, you should say,

မင်းယဉ်ကျေးချင်တယ်ဆိုရင်မင်းပြောသင့်တယ်၊

"May I go to the bathroom?"

"ငါရေချိုးခန်းကိုသွားနိုင်မလား"

And I'm sure the teacher will like that better because you're being polite.

မင်းကယဉ်ယဉ်ကျေးကျေးနေလို့ဆရာကပိုသဘောကျမှာသေချာတယ်

Okay. So...

အိုကေ။ ဒါ ...

In this video we learned three ways to ask for permission.

Let's go through them one more time.
