I'm Esther and in this video I'm going to teach you how to ask someone for permission

Okay so before I teach you that,

अच्छा, तो इससे पूर्व के में आपको यह सिखाऊं,

let's first talk about what permission means.

पहले हम अनुमति के अर्थ के बारे में बात करते हैं।

Okay so...

When you want to ask someone if it's okay to do something, you're asking for permission.

जब आप किसी से पूछना चाहते हैं, के यदि कोई नियमित कार्य करना उचित है, तो आप अनुमति की याचना कर रहे हैं।

Okay again, you want to do something, you don't know if it's okay, so you ask someone.

For example, maybe you want to borrow something.

Then you should ask someone.

तो आपको किसी से पूछ लेना चाहिए।

If you just take it that's stealing, right?

यदि आप उसे बस यूं ही ले लेते हैं तो वो चोरी कहलाएगी ना?

So you have to ask.

अतः, आपको उसे मांगना है।

Is it okay? Alright?

उचित है ना? ठीक है?

So there are three ways to ask for permission in English.

तो अंग्रेज़ी में अनुमति मांगने की तीन रीतियाँ हैं।

The first way is to say, "Can I...?" "Can I...?" Okay.

पहली रीति है “Can I…?” “Can I…?” कहना, ठीक है?

The second way is "Could I...?" "Could I...?"

दूसरी रीति है “Could I…?” “Could I…?”

And the third way is, "May I...?" "May I...?" Okay.

और तीसरी रीति है, “May I…?” “May I…?” ठीक है।

So 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' are all good ways to ask for permission.

तो ‘can I', ‘could I', और ‘may I’ यह सारी अनुमति याचना करने हेतु अच्छी विधियाँ हैं।

But the third one, 'may I', is more polite. Okay.

किन्तु तीसरा वाला, ‘may I', विनम्रतम2 है। ठीक है।

So if you want to ask somebody who has more power,

तो यदि आपको किसी ऐसे से पूछना है जो आपसे ज्येष्ठ हैं,

maybe your parents, may be your teacher,

शायद आपके माता-पिता से, या आपके अध्यापक से,

then you should say 'may I'.

तो आपको ‘may I' कहना चाहिए।

Maybe even to somebody that you don't know very well,

शायद किसी ऐसे से भी जिसे आप अच्छे से नहीं जानते हों,

it's better to say may I because again it's more polite.

May I कहना श्रेष्ट रहेगा क्योंकि यह अधिक विनम्र है।

So let's look at these examples.

तो आइए इन उदाहरणों को देखते हैं।

Okay so I've written 'can I', 'could I', and 'may I' on the board.

अच्छा तो मैंने ‘can I', ‘could I', और ‘may I' पट्ट पर लिख दिया है।

Remember, after these three, you have to say a verb.

स्मरण रहे, के इन तीनों के बाद, आपको एक क्रिया का उच्चारण करना है।

Okay so let's look at the verbs.

'help' 'see' 'have' 'call' 'borrow' 'go' 'speak' and 'go' again.

‘help’(सहायता करना) ‘see’(देखना) ‘have’(के पास होना) ‘call’(पुकारना/बुलाना) ‘borrow’(उधार लेना) ‘go’(जाना) ‘speak’(बोलना) और पुनः ‘go’(जाना)

Okay so I know I went through that a little bit quickly but

we're going to go through it slowly now.

अब हम इन्हें धीमे पढ़ने वाले हैं।

Okay so here's what we'll do.

अच्छा तो हम ऐसा करते हैं,

I'm going to read and try to switch some around. Okay?

के मैं पढ़ती हूँ और किछ को फेर देती हूँ।

So... "Can I help you?"

तो… “Can I help you?” ‘क्या मैं आपकी सहायता कर सकती हूं?’

"Can I help you?"

“Can I help you?” ‘क्या मैं आपकी सहायता कर सकती हूँ?’

let's try that a little bit faster.

इसे तनिक तीव्र करने का प्रयास करते हैं।

"Can I help you?"

“Can I help you?” ‘क्या मैं आपकी सहायता कर सकती हूँ?’

"Can I help you?"

“Can I help you?” ‘क्या मैं आपकी सहायता कर सकती हूँ?’

Now remember, you can also say 'could I' and 'may I'.

अब स्मरण रहे के आप ‘could I और ‘may I' भी केह सकते हैं।

For example, if you're walking through a department store,

उदाहरण हेतु, यदि आप एक किराने की दुकान से होकर चल रहे हैं।,

and the salesperson comes to you,

और विक्रेता प्रतिनिधि आपके निकट आते हैं,

they would probably say, "May I help you?" because they want to be polite to the customer.

तो वे संभवतः कहेंगे, “May I help you?” ‘क्या मैं आपकी सहायता कर सकता हूँ?’ क्योंकि वे ग्राहक से विनम्र रहना चाहते हैं।

So again, "May I help you?"

Okay.

A little bit faster.

"Can I see you again?"

Maybe you like someone you met them and you like them

शायद आप किसी को पसंद करते हैं, आप उनसे मिले और आपको वे पसंद आ गए

and you want to see them again next time,

और आप उन्हे पूनः देखना चाहते हैं अगली बारी,

So you say, "Can I see you again?"

Okay.

ठीक है।

"Can I have some water?"

“Can I have some water?” ‘क्या मुझे थोड़ा पानी मिलेगा?’

"Can I have some water?"

A little bit faster.

थोड़े और तीव्र।

"Can I have some water?"

“Can I gave some water?” ‘क्या मुझे थोड़ा पानी मिलेगा?’

Okay.

ठीक है।

Let's try a couple with 'could'.

तो चलिए दो-दो ‘could’ के साथ भी प्रयास कर लेते हैं।

"Could I call you later?"

“Could I call you later?” ‘क्या मैं आपको पुनः पुकार सकती हूँ?’

"Could I call you later?"

“Could I call you later?” ‘क्या मैं आपको पूनः पुकार सकती हूँ?’

Again, remember, you can use all three, but we're doing 'could'.

अब फिर से यही बात स्मरण रहे के आप इन तीनों का उपयोग कर सकते हैं, किन्तु हम इधर ‘could’ का कर रहे हैं।

"Could I call you later?"

“Could I call you later?” ‘क्या मैं आपको पूनः पुकार सकती हूँ?’

"Could I borrow some money?"

“Could I borrow some money?” ‘क्या मैं कुछ पैसे उधार ले सकती हूँ?’

Okay. You usually borrow money from a friend or somebody that you know,

ठीक है। आप प्रायः किसी मित्र से ,या किसी जानकार ही पैसे उधार लेते हैं,

so that's why it's better to say maybe 'can I' or 'could I'.

तो इसीलिए शायद बेहतर रहेगा यहाँ ‘can I' या ‘could I' केहना।

"Could I borrow some money?"

“Could I borrow some money?” ‘क्या में कुछ पैसे उधार ले सकती हूँ?’

Okay.

ठीक है।

"Could I go?"

“Could I go?” ‘क्या मैं जा सकती हूँ?’

"Could I go?"

“Could I go?” ‘क्या मैं जा सकती हूँ?’

You want to leave, so you're asking if it's okay.

आप निकलना चाहते हैं, तो आप पूछ रहे हैं यदि ऐसा करना उचित है।

"Could I go?"

“Could I go?” ‘क्या मैं जा सकती हूँ?’

Okay and remember 'may I' is polite okay

ठीक है और स्मरण रहे के ‘may I' में अत्यधिक विनम्रता है

you want to say that to someone who's a little bit more important,

आप किसी ऐसे को ये कहना चाहेंगे जो थोड़े अधिक महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं,

maybe someone you don't know.

शायद कोई ऐसे को जिन्हें आप ना जानते हों।

Again you would use 'may I'.

पुनः आप ‘may I' का प्रयोग करेंगे।

So "May I speak to mr. Kim?"

तो “May I speak to Mr. Kim?” ‘क्या मेरी किम महोदय से बात हो सकती है?’

Maybe you called his office, okay, so you say,

शायद आपने उनकी कार्यशाला पर पुकार लगाईआ, ठीक है, तो आप कहेंगे,

"May I speak to mr. Kim?"

“May I speak to Mr. Kim?” ‘क्या मेरी किम महोदय से बात हो सकती है?’

And the last one -

और यह अंतिम –

"May I go to the bathroom?"

“May I go to the bathroom?” ‘क्या में शौचालय जा सकती हूँ?’

This one is maybe if you're asking a teacher.

शायद आपको अपने अध्यापक से ऐसा पूछना पड़े।

Right? You're in class and you have to go, you can ask a teacher

है ना? आप कक्षा में हैं और आपको जाना है, तो आप अध्यापक से पूछ सकते हैं

"May I go to the bathroom?"

“May I go to the bathroom?” ‘क्या मैं शौचालय जा सकती हूँ?’

Again, 'can I' 'could' 'can' and 'could' are both okay.

फिर से, यहाँ ‘can I' और ‘could I', दोनों ही ठीक हैं।

But maybe it's more polite....

किन्तु शायद इस प्रकार थोड़ा अधिक विनम्र है…

If you want to be polite, you should say,

यदी आप विनम्रतापूर्वक कहना चाहते हैं, तो आपको पूछना चाहिए,

"May I go to the bathroom?"

“May I go to the bathroom?” ‘क्या मैं शौचालय जा सकती हूँ?’

And I'm sure the teacher will like that better because you're being polite.

और मुझे भरोसा है के अध्यापक को यह बेहतर लगेगा क्योंकि आप विनम्र हैं।

Okay. So...
