SAY vs TELL Difference and Meaning with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English verbs

ဤဗီဒီယိုတွင်၊ အလားတူနှင့် တစ်ခါတစ်ရံ ရှုပ်ထွေးနေသော အင်္ဂလိပ်ကြိယာ

နှစ်ခုအကြောင်း 'say' နှင့် 'tell' တို့အကြောင်း ပြောပြပါမည် ။

‘say’ and ‘tell’.

‘say’ and ‘tell’ have similar meanings

'say' နှင့် 'tell' တို့သည် အဓိပ္ပါယ်ဆင်တူ

but they are used in different ways.

သော်လည်း ၎င်းတို့ကို ပုံစံအမျိုးမျိုးဖြင့် အသုံးပြုကြသည်။

A lot of my students confuse these words,

so I hope to clear up any confusion.

Let’s start with ‘say’.

'Say' နဲ့ စကြည့်ရအောင်။

It is an irregular verb so the past tense form is ‘said’.

၎င်းသည် မမှန်သောကြိယာဖြစ်သောကြောင့် past tense form မှာ 'said' ဖြစ်သည်။

It means to speak, express something in words or to tell someone something.

တစ်စုံတစ်ခုကို ပြောရန်၊

တစ်စုံတစ်ခုကို စကားလုံးဖြင့် ဖော်ပြခြင်း သို့မဟုတ် တစ်စုံတစ်ဦးကို တစ်စုံတစ်ခုကို ပြောပြခြင်းဟု ဆိုလိုသည်။

Let’s look at some example sentences.

ဥပမာဝါကျအချို့ကို ကြည့်ကြပါစို့။

The first sentence says,

ပထမစာကြောင်းက 'တောင်းပန်ပါတယ် မင်းဘာပြောလိုက်တာလဲ။'

‘I’m sorry what did you say?’

Maybe I couldn't hear you but I want to know the words that you spoke

ငါ မင်းကို မကြားနိုင်ပေမယ့် မင်းပြောခဲ့တဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေကို ငါသိချင်လို့

so I say, ‘What did you say?’

'မင်း ဘာပြောလိုက်တာလဲ။'

The next sentence says,

နောက်စာကြောင်းက

‘My mom said ‘hi’.’

'ငါ့အမေက 'ဟိုင်း' တဲ့။

I’m reporting the words that she spoke.

သူပြောခဲ့တဲ့ စကားတွေကို ကျွန်တော် အစီရင်ခံပါတယ်။

‘She said ‘hi’.’

'ဟိုင်း' လို့ ပြောပါတယ်။

Now, I will talk about ‘tell’.

အခု 'ပြောပြမယ်' လို့ ပြောမယ်။

It is also an irregular verb.

၎င်းသည် မမှန်သောကြိယာတစ်ခုလည်းဖြစ်သည်။

The past tense is ‘told’.

အတိတ်ကာလသည် 'ပြောပြ' သည်။

It means to say something to someone

အထူးသဖြင့် အချက်အလက် သို့မဟုတ် ညွှန်ကြားချက်များပေးသည့်အခါ

especially when giving information or instructions.

တစ်စုံတစ်ဦးအား တစ်ခုခုပြောရန် ဆိုလိုသည် ။

Let’s look at some examples.

ဥပမာအချို့ကို ကြည့်ကြပါစို့။

The first sentence says,

ပထမစာကြောင်းက

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'သူပင်ပန်းတယ်လို့ သူ့အမေကို ပြောတယ်' တဲ့။

He shared this information with his mom.

သူက ဒီအချက်အလက်တွေကို သူ့အမေနဲ့ မျှဝေတယ်။

So we can use ‘told’.

ဒါကြောင့် 'told' ကိုသုံးနိုင်တယ်။

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'ပင်ပန်းနေပြီလို့ သူ့အမေကို ပြောတယ်'

The next sentence says,

နောက်စာကြောင်းက

‘Tara told john that she loved him.’

'Tara က သူ့ကို ချစ်တယ်လို့ ဂျွန်ကို ပြောတယ်' တဲ့။

Again, Tara told or gave information to John

တစ်ဖန် Tara သည် John အား

that she loved him.

သူမချစ်ကြောင်းကို ပြောပြသည် သို့မဟုတ် အချက်အလက်ပေးခဲ့သည်။

Now, let's do a checkup.

အခု စစ်ဆေးကြည့်ရအောင်။

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

ဤစကားဝိုင်းတွင် စာကြောင်းနှစ်ကြောင်းရှိသည်။

In one of the sentences, we use the verb ‘say’

ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းမှာ ကြိယာ 'say' ကိုသုံးပြီး

and the other one we use ‘tell’.

နောက်တစ်ခုက 'tell' ကို သုံးပါတယ်။

Take a moment to think about where we should use ‘say’ and ‘tell’.

'say' နဲ့ 'tell' ကို ဘယ်မှာသုံးရမလဲဆိုတာ ခဏလောက်စဉ်းစားပါ။

‘A’ says,

'A' က

‘Did you _blank_ that you liked her?’

'မင်း _blank_ သူ့ကို ကြိုက်ခဲ့တာလား။'

Remember, for ‘say’,

'ပြော' အတွက်၊

something comes after.

တစ်ခုခုနောက်ကို ရောက်လာတာကို

We ‘say’ something.

သတိရပါ ။ ငါတို့က တစ်ခုခုပြောနေတာ။

In this case, the something is that you liked her.

ဤကိစ္စတွင်၊ သင်သူမကိုနှစ်သက်သောအရာတစ်ခုဖြစ်သည်။

So ‘A’ should be

ဒီတော့ 'A' က

‘Did you say that you liked her?’

'မင်း သူ့ကို သဘောကျတယ်လို့ မင်းပြောခဲ့သလား'

‘B’ says, ‘No I _blank_ her that I loved her.’

'B' က 'မဟုတ်ဘူး ငါ _blank_ သူမကို ငါချစ်တယ်' လို့ ပြောပါတယ်။

For the verb ‘tell’

ကြိယာအတွက်

someone comes after.

တစ်စုံတစ်ယောက်သည် နောက်မှလာပါသည်။

We tell someone.

ငါတို့က တစ်ယောက်ယောက်ကို ပြောပြတယ်။

In this case, ‘her’ comes after the blank,

ဤကိစ္စတွင် 'သူမ' သည် ကွက်လပ်နောက်တွင် ရှိလာသော

so the answer is ‘tell’.

ကြောင့် အဖြေမှာ 'ပြောပြပါ' ဖြစ်သည်။

However, we need to use the past tense,

သို့သော် အတိတ်ကာလကို အသုံးပြုရန် လိုအပ်သော

so ‘B’ says,

ကြောင့် 'B' က

‘No, I told her that I loved her.’

'မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ ငါ သူ့ကို ချစ်တယ်လို့ ပြောခဲ့တယ်' လို့ ဆိုပါတယ်။

So let's look at the conversation again.

ဒီတော့ စကားဝိုင်းကို ပြန်ကြည့်ရအောင်။

A: Did you say that you liked her?

A: မင်း သူ့ကို သဘောကျတယ်လို့ မင်းပြောခဲ့တာလား။

B: No, I told her that I loved her.

B: မဟုတ်ဘူး၊ ငါ သူ့ကို ချစ်တယ်လို့ ပြောခဲ့တယ်။
