SAY vs TELL Difference and Meaning with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English verbs

‘say’ and ‘tell’ have similar meanings

but they are used in different ways.

Let’s start with ‘say’.

'বলা' দিয়ে শুরু করা যাক।

It is an irregular verb so the past tense form is ‘said’.

এটি একটি অনিয়মিত ক্রিয়া তাই অতীত কালের রূপটি 'কথিত'।

It means to speak, express something in words or to tell someone something.

এর অর্থ কথা বলা,

কথায় কিছু প্রকাশ করা বা কাউকে কিছু বলা।

Let’s look at some example sentences.

আসুন কিছু উদাহরণ বাক্য দেখি।

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে, 'আমি দুঃখিত আপনি কী বলেছেন?'

‘I’m sorry what did you say?’

Maybe I couldn't hear you but I want to know the words that you spoke

হয়তো আমি শুনতে পারিনি কিন্তু আপনি যে কথাগুলো বলেছেন

so I say, ‘What did you say?’

আমি তা জানতে চাই তাই বলি, 'কি বললে?'

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে,

‘My mom said ‘hi’.’

'আমার মা 'হাই' বলেছেন।'

I’m reporting the words that she spoke.

সে যে কথাগুলো বলেছে আমি সেই কথাগুলোই রিপোর্ট করছি।

‘She said ‘hi’.’

'সে 'হাই' বলেছে।'

Now, I will talk about ‘tell’.

এখন, আমি 'বলা' সম্পর্কে কথা বলব।

It is also an irregular verb.

এটি একটি অনিয়মিত ক্রিয়াও।

The past tense is ‘told’.

অতীত কাল হল 'কথিত'।

It means to say something to someone

এর অর্থ কাউকে কিছু বলা

especially when giving information or instructions.

বিশেষ করে তথ্য বা নির্দেশ দেওয়ার সময়।

Let’s look at some examples.

আসুন কিছু উদাহরণ দেখি।

The first sentence says,

প্রথম বাক্যটি বলে,

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'সে তার মাকে বলেছিল যে সে ক্লান্ত ছিল।'

He shared this information with his mom.

তিনি তার মায়ের সাথে এই তথ্য শেয়ার করেছেন।

So we can use ‘told’.

তাই আমরা 'বলা' ব্যবহার করতে পারি।

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'সে তার মাকে বলেছিল যে সে ক্লান্ত।'

The next sentence says,

পরের বাক্যটি বলে,

‘Tara told john that she loved him.’

'তারা জনকে বলেছিল যে সে তাকে ভালবাসে।'

Again, Tara told or gave information to John

আবার, তারা জনকে বলেছিল বা তথ্য দিয়েছিল

that she loved him.

যে সে তাকে ভালবাসে।

Now, let's do a checkup.

এখন, একটি চেকআপ করা যাক.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

এই কথোপকথনে, দুটি বাক্য আছে।

In one of the sentences, we use the verb ‘say’

একটি বাক্যে, আমরা 'বলো' ক্রিয়া ব্যবহার করি

and the other one we use ‘tell’.

এবং অন্যটিতে আমরা 'বলো' ব্যবহার করি।

Take a moment to think about where we should use ‘say’ and ‘tell’.

‘A’ says,

'ক' বলে,

‘Did you _blank_ that you liked her?’

Remember, for ‘say’,

something comes after.

We ‘say’ something.

In this case, the something is that you liked her.

So ‘A’ should be

‘Did you say that you liked her?’

For the verb ‘tell’

'বলো' ক্রিয়ার জন্য

someone comes after.

কেউ পরে আসে।

We tell someone.

আমরা কাউকে বলি।

In this case, ‘her’ comes after the blank,

এই ক্ষেত্রে, 'তার' খালির পরে আসে,

so the answer is ‘tell’.

However, we need to use the past tense,

so ‘B’ says,
