SAY vs TELL Difference and Meaning with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English verbs

혼동을 주는 두 개의 영어 동사 'say'와 'tell' 에 대해 이야기하겠습니다

‘say’ and ‘tell’.

‘say’ and ‘tell’ have similar meanings

. '말하다'와 '말하다'는 의미는 비슷

but they are used in different ways.

하지만 다른 방식으로 사용됩니다.

A lot of my students confuse these words,

많은 학생들이 이 단어를 혼동하고

so I hope to clear up any confusion.

있으므로 혼란을 없애고 싶습니다.

Let’s start with ‘say’.

'말하다'부터 시작해보자.

It is an irregular verb so the past tense form is ‘said’.

불규칙 동사이므로 과거형이 'sed'로 됩니다.

It means to speak, express something in words or to tell someone something.

말하다,

말로 무엇인가를 표현하다, 또는 누군가에게 무엇인가를 말하다라는 뜻입니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은 '미안하다고 뭐라고 말씀하셨나요?'입니다.

‘I’m sorry what did you say?’

Maybe I couldn't hear you but I want to know the words that you spoke

못 들었을 수도 있지만 네가 한 말을 알고 싶어서

so I say, ‘What did you say?’

'뭐라고 했어?'라고 말해요.

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은

‘My mom said ‘hi’.’

'엄마가 '안녕하세요'라고 말씀하셨어요.'

I’m reporting the words that she spoke.

입니다. 나는 그녀가 한 말을 보고합니다.

‘She said ‘hi’.’

'그녀가 '안녕하세요'라고 했어요.'

Now, I will talk about ‘tell’.

이제 '말하다'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It is also an irregular verb.

불규칙 동사이기도 합니다.

The past tense is ‘told’.

과거형은 '말하다'입니다.

It means to say something to someone

특히 정보나 지시를 할 때

especially when giving information or instructions.

누군가에게 무엇인가를 말하는 것을 의미합니다 .

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'그는 엄마에게 피곤하다고 말했다'입니다.

He shared this information with his mom.

그는 이 정보를 엄마에게 공유했습니다.

So we can use ‘told’.

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

The next sentence says,

‘Tara told john that she loved him.’

Again, Tara told or gave information to John

that she loved him.

Now, let's do a checkup.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

In one of the sentences, we use the verb ‘say’

and the other one we use ‘tell’.

Take a moment to think about where we should use ‘say’ and ‘tell’.

'say'와 'tell'을 어디에 사용해야 할지 잠시 생각해 보세요.

‘A’ says,

'A'는

‘Did you _blank_ that you liked her?’

'당신이 그녀를 좋아한다고 _공백_했습니까?'

Remember, for ‘say’,

라고 말합니다. 'say'에는

something comes after.

뒤에 뭔가가 온다는 것을 기억하세요.

We ‘say’ something.

우리는 뭔가를 '말'합니다.

In this case, the something is that you liked her.

So ‘A’ should be

For the verb ‘tell’

someone comes after.

누군가가 뒤에 옵니다.

We tell someone.

In this case, ‘her’ comes after the blank,

이 경우 빈칸 뒤에 'her'가 나오

so the answer is ‘tell’.

므로 정답은 'tell'입니다.

However, we need to use the past tense,

하지만 과거형을 사용해야 하므로

so ‘B’ says,

'B'는

‘No, I told her that I loved her.’

'아니요, 사랑한다고 말했어요'라고 말합니다.

So let's look at the conversation again.

그럼 대화 내용을 다시 살펴보겠습니다.

A: Did you say that you liked her?

A: 그 사람을 좋아한다고 했나요?

B: No, I told her that I loved her.

B: 아니, 난 그 사람에게 사랑한다고 말했어.
