SAY vs TELL Difference and Meaning with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English verbs

이번 영상에서는 비슷하면서도 헷갈리기 쉬운 두 개의 영어 동사

‘say’ and ‘tell’.

'say'와 'tell'에 대해 이야기해보려고 합니다.

‘say’ and ‘tell’ have similar meanings

'say'와 'tell'은 비슷한 의미를 가지고

but they are used in different ways.

있지만 다른 방식으로 사용됩니다.

A lot of my students confuse these words,

많은 수련생들이 이 단어를 혼동하고 있으므로

Let’s start with ‘say’.

'말'로 시작합시다.

It is an irregular verb so the past tense form is ‘said’.

불규칙동사이므로 과거형은 '말했다'입니다.

It means to speak, express something in words or to tell someone something.

말하다, 말로 표현하다, 누군가에게 무엇인가를 전하다라는 뜻입니다.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

몇 가지 예문을 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장이 '

‘I’m sorry what did you say?’

미안해 뭐라고 했어?'인데

Maybe I couldn't hear you but I want to know the words that you spoke

못 들었을 수도 있지만 무슨 말을 했는지 알고 싶어서

so I say, ‘What did you say?’

'무슨 말을 했어?'

The next sentence says,

다음 문장은 '

‘My mom said ‘hi’.’

엄마가 '안녕하세요'라고 하셨어요.'

I’m reporting the words that she spoke.

하신 말씀을 전합니다.

‘She said ‘hi’.’

'그녀는 '안녕'이라고 말했다.

Now, I will talk about ‘tell’.

이제 '말하다'에 대해 이야기하겠습니다.

It is also an irregular verb.

불규칙동사이기도 합니다.

The past tense is ‘told’.

과거 시제는 '말했다'입니다.

It means to say something to someone

especially when giving information or instructions.

특히 정보나 지침을 줄 때 누군가에게 무언가를 말하는 것을 의미합니다.

Let’s look at some examples.

몇 가지 예를 살펴보겠습니다.

The first sentence says,

첫 번째 문장은

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'엄마에게 피곤하다고 말했다.'입니다.

He shared this information with his mom.

그는 이 정보를 엄마와 공유했습니다.

So we can use ‘told’.

그래서 우리는 '말했다'를 사용할 수 있습니다.

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

The next sentence says,

‘Tara told john that she loved him.’

Again, Tara told or gave information to John

Now, let's do a checkup.

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

이 대화에는 두 개의 문장이 있습니다.

In one of the sentences, we use the verb ‘say’

and the other one we use ‘tell’.

하고 다른 문장에서는 'tell'을 사용합니다.

Take a moment to think about where we should use ‘say’ and ‘tell’.

‘A’ says,

‘Did you _blank_ that you liked her?’

'당신이 그녀를 좋아한다고 _blank_ 했습니까?'라고

Remember, for ‘say’,

말합니다. 'say'에는

something comes after.

무언가가 뒤따른다는 것을 기억하십시오.

We ‘say’ something.

In this case, the something is that you liked her.

So ‘A’ should be

For the verb ‘tell’

someone comes after.

We tell someone.

In this case, ‘her’ comes after the blank,

so the answer is ‘tell’.

However, we need to use the past tense,

so ‘B’ says,

'B'는

‘No, I told her that I loved her.’

So let's look at the conversation again.

A: Did you say that you liked her?

A: 그녀를 좋아한다고 말했니?

B: No, I told her that I loved her.

B: 아니, 사랑한다고 말했어.

Now you know the difference between ‘say’ and ‘tell’.
