SAY vs TELL Difference and Meaning with Example English Sentences

In this video, I’m going to talk about the two similar and sometimes confusing English verbs

‘say’ and ‘tell’.

‘say’ and ‘tell’ have similar meanings

but they are used in different ways.

A lot of my students confuse these words,

Let’s start with ‘say’.

It is an irregular verb so the past tense form is ‘said’.

It means to speak, express something in words or to tell someone something.

Let’s look at some example sentences.

The first sentence says,

ประโยคแรกพูดว่า 'ฉันขอโทษคุณพูดอะไร?'

‘I’m sorry what did you say?’

Maybe I couldn't hear you but I want to know the words that you spoke

บางทีฉันอาจไม่ได้ยินคุณแต่ฉันอยากรู้คำพูดที่คุณพูด

so I say, ‘What did you say?’

ดังนั้นฉันจึงพูดว่า 'คุณพูดอะไร'

The next sentence says,

ประโยคถัดไปพูดว่า

‘My mom said ‘hi’.’

'แม่ของฉันพูดว่า 'สวัสดี'

I’m reporting the words that she spoke.

‘She said ‘hi’.’

'เธอพูดว่า 'สวัสดี'

Now, I will talk about ‘tell’.

ตอนนี้ผมจะพูดถึง 'บอก'

It is also an irregular verb.

นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นคำกริยาที่ไม่ปกติ

The past tense is ‘told’.

อดีตกาลคือ 'บอก'

It means to say something to someone

หมายถึงการพูดอะไรบางอย่างกับใครบางคน

especially when giving information or instructions.

Let’s look at some examples.

The first sentence says,

ประโยคแรกพูดว่า

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'เขาบอกแม่ว่าเขาเหนื่อย'

He shared this information with his mom.

เขาแบ่งปันข้อมูลนี้กับแม่ของเขา

So we can use ‘told’.

เราจึงใช้คำว่า 'บอก' ได้

‘He told his mom that he was tired.’

'เขาบอกแม่ว่าเขาเหนื่อย'

The next sentence says,

ประโยคถัดไปพูดว่า

‘Tara told john that she loved him.’

'ธาราบอกจอห์นว่าเธอรักเขา'

Again, Tara told or gave information to John

ทาราบอกหรือให้ข้อมูลกับจอห์นอีกครั้ง

that she loved him.

Now, let's do a checkup.

เอาล่ะ มาตรวจสุขภาพกันดีกว่า

In this conversation, there are two sentences.

ในการสนทนานี้มีสองประโยค

In one of the sentences, we use the verb ‘say’

ในประโยคหนึ่ง เราใช้คำกริยา 'say'

and the other one we use ‘tell’.

และอีกประโยคเราใช้ 'tell'

Take a moment to think about where we should use ‘say’ and ‘tell’.

ใช้เวลาสักครู่เพื่อคิดว่าเราควรจะใช้ 'พูด' และ 'บอก' ตรงไหน

‘A’ says,

'A' พูดว่า

‘Did you _blank_ that you liked her?’

'คุณ _blank_ ที่คุณชอบเธอหรือเปล่า'

Remember, for ‘say’,

จำไว้ว่า สำหรับ 'พูด'

something comes after.

จะมีบางอย่างตามมา

We ‘say’ something.

เรา 'พูด' บางอย่าง

In this case, the something is that you liked her.

ในกรณีนี้ บางอย่างก็คือคุณชอบเธอ

So ‘A’ should be

For the verb ‘tell’

someone comes after.

We tell someone.

In this case, ‘her’ comes after the blank,

ในกรณีนี้ 'her' มาหลังช่องว่าง

so the answer is ‘tell’.

However, we need to use the past tense,

so ‘B’ says,
