Yarn bombing is when you take knitted or crocheted material

But when I started this over 10 years ago,

I didn't have a word for it,

I didn't have any ambitious notions about it,

I had no visions of grandeur.

All I wanted to see was something warm and fuzzy and human-like

on the cold, steel, gray facade that I looked at everyday.

So I wrapped the door handle.

I call this the Alpha Piece.

Little did I know that this tiny piece would change the course of my life.

As reações foram claramente interessantes.

So clearly the reaction was interesting.

It intrigued me and I thought, "What else could I do?"

Fiquei intrigada e pensei: "O mais mais posso fazer?

Could I do something in the public domain that would get the same reaction?

Talvez algo no espaço público que causasse a mesma reação?

So I wrapped the stop sign pole near my house.

Aí, cobri a haste da placa de "pare" próximo à minha casa.

The reaction was wild.

A reação foi surreal.

People would park their cars

As pessoas estacionavam e saíam dos carros pra olhar,

and get out of their cars and stare at it,

and scratch their heads and stare at it,

coçavam a cabeça e ficavam olhando, tiravam fotos da placa e ao lado dela.

and take pictures of it and take pictures next to it,

and all of that was really exciting to me

Tudo isso era superempolgante pra mim

and I wanted to do every stop sign pole in the neighborhood.

e quis fazer o mesmo em todas placas de "pare" do bairro.

And the more that I did, the stronger the reaction.

Quanto mais eu fazia, maior a reação.

So at this point I'm smitten.

A essa altura, eu me rendi, me apaixonei.

I'm hooked.

This was all seductive.

Tudo aquilo me seduziu, encontrei uma nova paixão

I found my new passion

and the urban environment was my playground.

e o ambiente urbano era o meu playground.

So this is some of my early work.

I was very curious about this idea of enhancing the ordinary,

the mundane, even the ugly,

o ordinário, até mesmo o feio,

and not taking away its identity or its functionality

but just giving it a well-tailored suit out of knitting.

mas apenas lhe dar uma capa bem tricotada.

And this was fun for me.

Eu achava divertido.

It was really fun to take inanimate objects

and have them come to life.

So ...

Então...

I think we all see the humor in this,

Acho que todos acham graça nisso, mas...

but --

(Risos)

(Laughter)

I was at a point where I wanted to take it seriously.

cheguei a um ponto em que quis levar isso a sério, queria analisar,

I wanted to analyze it.

queria saber por que estava deixando isso tomar conta de mim,

I wanted to know why I was letting this take over my life,

why I was passionate about it,

por que era apaixonada por isso, por que os outros reagiam tanto a isso,

why were other people reacting so strongly to it.

And I realized something.

e descobri uma coisa.

We all live in this fast-paced, digital world,

Vivemos num mundo acelerado e digital,

but we still crave and desire something that's relatable.

mas sentimos falta e desejamos algo com que nos identifiquemos.

I think we've all become desensitized

Acho que ficamos dessensibilizados

by our overdeveloped cities that we live in,

and billboards and advertisements,

dos letreiros, dos anúncios, estacionamentos gigantes,

and giant parking lots,

and we don't even complain about that stuff anymore.

que nem reclamamos mais dessas coisas.

So when you stumble upon

Então, quando encontramos uma placa de trânsito envolvida em tricô,

a stop sign pole that's wrapped in knitting

que parece tão incomum

and it seems so out of place

and then gradually -- weirdly --

e, aos poucos, estranhamente, encontramos um ligação com isso,

you find a connection to it,

that is the moment.

esse é o momento, o momento que adoro e que adoro compartilhar com os outros.

That is the moment I love

and that is the moment I love to share with others.

So at this point, my curiosity grew.

It went from the fire hydrants and the stop sign poles

Fui dos hidrantes e placas de trânsito para: "O que mais posso fazer com isso?

to what else can I do with this material.

Será que posso fazer algo grande, em grande escala, insuperável?"

Can I do something big and large-scale and insurmountable?

So that's when the bus happened.

Foi aí que surgiu o ônibus.

This was a real game changer for me.

Foi um divisor de águas para mim.

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for this one.

Terei sempre guardado em meu coração.

Aí, meu trabalho já estava sendo reconhecido,

At this point, people were recognizing my work

but there wasn't much out there

mas não tinha muita coisa lá fora, envolto em tricô, que fosse grande,

that was wrapped in knitting that was large-scale,

e esse foi o primeiro ônibus a ser coberto com tricô.

and this definitely was the first city bus to be wrapped in knitting.

So at this point, I'm experiencing,

Então, comecei a experimentar ou a testemunhar algo interessante.

or I'm witnessing something interesting.

I may have started yarn bombing but I certainly don't own it anymore.

Posso ter começado o yarn bombing, mas certamente ele não é mais meu.

It had reached global status.

People from all over the world were doing this.

And I know this because I would travel to certain parts of the world

that I'd never been to,

and I'd stumble upon a stop sign pole and I knew I didn't wrap it.

So as I pursued my own goals with my art --

this is a lot of my recent work --

so was yarn bombing.

Yarn bombing was also growing.

And that experience showed me the hidden power of this craft

and showed me

que eu compartilhava de uma linguagem comum com o restante do mundo.

that there was this common language I had with the rest of the world.

It was through this granny hobby --

Adotei esse "hobby de vovó",

this unassuming hobby --

simples,

that I found commonality with people

com o qual descobri algo em comum com pessoas

that I never thought I'd have a connection with.

com as quais jamais imaginei que teria alguma ligação.

So as I tell my story today,

Então, contando minha história hoje, também gostaria de dizer a vocês

I'd also like to convey to you

that hidden power can be found in the most unassuming places,

que o poder oculto pode ser encontrado nos lugares mais simples

and we all possess skills that are just waiting to be discovered.

e todos temos habilidades que estão só esperando ser descobertas.

If you think about our hands, these tools that are connected to us,

Se pensarmos em nossas mãos, essas ferramentas ligadas a nós,

and what they're capable of doing --

building houses and furniture,

and painting giant murals --

and most of the time we hold a controller or a cell phone.

And I'm totally guilty of this as well.

But if you think about it,

what would happen if you put those things down?

What would you make? What would you create with your own hands?

O que você faria? O que você criaria com suas próprias mãos?

Muita gente acha que sou mestra em tricô,

A lot of people think that I am a master knitter

but I actually couldn't knit a sweater to save my life.

mas, não seria capaz de tricotar um suéter para sobreviver,

But I did something interesting with knitting

mas fiz algo interessante com o tricô que jamais havia sido feito.

that had never been done before.

I also wasn't "supposed to be" an artist

Também "não era para eu ser" artista

in the sense that I wasn't formally trained to do this --

no sentido de que eu não tinha formação pra isso.

I'm a math major actually.

So I didn't think this was in the cards for me,

but I also know that I didn't stumble upon this.

And when this happened to me, I held on tight,

I fought for it and I'm proud to say that I am a working artist today.

So as we ponder the future,

And one day, you might be as bored as I was
