The theme of my talk today is,

"Be an artist, right now."

ပြီးတော့ ငါ့မှာကျောင်းလည်းတက်ရဦးမှာ လုပ်ငန်းခွင်လည်း ဝင်ရဦးမှာ

Most people, when this subject is brought up,

လုပ်စရာတွေများ၊ ကလေးကျောင်းပို့ရမှာနဲ့ ရှုပ်ရတဲ့အထဲ

အနုပညာတွေ ဘာတွေ လာလုပ်နေသေးတယ် ဆိုတဲ့ အတွေးမျိုး ‌ဝင်မိကြမှာပါ

get tense and resist it:

"Art doesn't feed me, and right now I'm busy.

အခုချက်ချင်း ကျွန်တော်တို့ အနုပညာရှင် မဖြစ်နိုင်တဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်း ရာချီရှိနေပါတယ်

I have to go to school, get a job,

send my kids to lessons ... "

ခေါင်းထဲ တန်း ပေါ်လာတယ်မလား

မဖြစ်နိုင်တဲ့အကြောင်းရင်းတွေ တကယ် များပါတယ်

You think, "I'm too busy. I don't have time for art."

ဘာကြောင့်ဖြစ်ရမယ်ဆိုတာလည်း သေချာမသိဘူး တကယ်တွေးကြည့်ရင်

ဘာကြောင့်လဲ ကို သေချာ မသိပေမယ့်

ဘာဖြစ်ဖြစ် မဖြစ်သင့်တဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်းကျတော့ အတော်များပါတယ်

There are hundreds of reasons why we can't be artists right now.

Don't they just pop into your head?

ဘာကြောင့် လူတွေက အနုပညာဆိုတဲ့ အသံကြားတာနဲ့ အခုလို ငြင်းပယ်လိုစိတ်တွေတန်းဝင်ကြတာများလဲ

There are so many reasons why we can't be,

indeed, we're not sure why we should be.

ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက အနုပညာဆိုတာကို ထူးခြားတဲ့ ပင်ကိုယ်ပါရမီ ပါလာမှ မဟုတ်ရင်

We don't know why we should be artists,

but we have many reasons why we can't be.

ပရော်ဖက်ရှင်နယ်ကျကျ အပတ်တကုပ် လေ့ကျင့်ထားသူတွေသာ

လုပ်တဲ့ အလုပ်မျိုးလို့ တွေးနေတာများ မဟုတ်ဘူးလား

Why do people instantly resist the idea of associating themselves with art?

ပြီးတော့ အခု လူကြီးမင်းတို့ဟာ

အနုပညာရှင်ရဲ့ လမ်းကြောင်းနဲ့ အရမ်းကို ဝေးနေပြီ မဟုတ်ဘူးလားဆိုတဲ့

Perhaps you think art is for the greatly gifted

အဲဒီလိုအတွေးမျိုးကို တွေးနေနိုင်တယ်လို့ ထင်ပေမဲ့

or for the thoroughly and professionally trained.

ကျွန်တော်တော့မဟုတ်ဘူးလို့ထင်တယ်

အဲဒါဟာ ကျွန်တော် ဒီနေ့ ပြောပြမဲ့ အကြောင်း ဖြစ်ပါတယ်

And some of you may think you've strayed too far from art.

ကျွန်တော်တို့အားလုံး အနုပညာရှင်တွေအဖြစ် မွေးလာတာပါ

အိမ်မှာ ကလေးရှိတဲ့သူတွေဆို တန်းသိနိုင်ပါလိမ့်မယ်

Well you might have, but I don't think so.

ကလေးတွေ လုပ်နေတဲ့ အပြုအမူ အားလုံးနီးပါးဟာ အနုပညာဖြစ်ပါတယ်

This is the theme of my talk today.

နံရံပေါ် ၊ နံရံစက္ကူပေါ် ဖယောင်းခဲတွေနဲ့ ပုံဆွဲတာတွေ

We are all born artists.

တီဗီမှာ တခုခု လာရင် Son Dam Bi လို အက လိုက်ကရတာနဲ့

If you have kids, you know what I mean.

အဲဒီနောက်ကျ တကယ်က Son Dam Bi အကလို့ ပြောလို့လည်း မရဘူးပေါ့

Almost everything kids do is art.

ကလေး သူ့ဟန်ပန်အတိုင်း အက‌ပေါ့လေ

အဲ့ဒီလို ထူးထူးဆန်းဆန်း အကတွေကပြီး သီချင်းတွေလည်း ဆိုလို့

They draw with crayons on the wall.

လူတွေအားလုံးကို နားဒုက္ခပေးကုန်ရော

They dance to Son Dam Bi's dance on TV,

ဖြစ်နိုင်တာက အဲဒီ အဆင့်ဆိုတဲ့ အရာဟာ အဲဒီအနုပညာရဲ့ အဆင့်အတန်းဆိုတာ

but you can't even call it Son Dam Bi's dance -- it becomes the kids' own dance.

မိမိကလေးသာ မဟုတ်ရင် သည်းခံပေးဖို့ ခက်ခဲလှတဲ့

So they dance a strange dance and inflict their singing on everyone.

အဆင့်မှာ ရှိတဲ့ အနုပညာကို တနေကုန် လုပ်နေတာကြောင့်ပါ

တကယ်က အားလုံးဟာ ကလေးတွေအနား နေရတာ နည်းနည်း ပင်ပန်းပါတယ်

Perhaps their art is something only their parents can bear,

အဲဒီ ကလေးတွေကတော့ တစ်ယောက်တည်းလည်း ဒရာမာတွေ ခင်းလို့ခင်းပေါ့

and because they practice such art all day long,

အိုးပုတ်နဲ့ ဆော့တာကလည်း တကယ်က တစ်ကိုယ်တော်ဒရာမာ သို့ ပြဇာတ်လည်းဟုတ်တယ်လေ

ပြီးတော့ တချို့ကလေးတွေဟာ အသက်ကြီးလာတဲ့အခါ

people honestly get a little tired around kids.

လိမ်ညာပြောတာတွေ စလာပါတယ်

မိဘတွေက ယေဘုယျအားဖြင့် မိမိကလေး ပထမဆုံးလိမ်ပြောတဲ့ အခိုက်အတန့်ကို

Kids will sometimes perform monodramas --

မှတ်မိကြပြီး ဒီလို မိခင်တွေ အများကြီး ရှိပါတယ်

playing house is indeed a monodrama or a play.

ရှော့ခ်ရသွားကြတာပေါ့

And some kids, when they get a bit older,

“ကလေးက နောက်ဆုံးတော့ ဗီဇအမှန်ကို ပြပြီပဲ အဖေနဲ့ တူတာကိုး

start to lie.

နင်ကြီးလာရင် ဘာဖြစ်ချင်နေလို့လဲ” စသဖြင့် ကလေးတွေကို ဆူပူကြပေမဲ့

Usually parents remember the very first time their kid lies.

အဲလိုကြီး မဟုတ်ပါဘူး

ကလေးတွေ စပြီး လိမ်ပြောတဲ့ အချိန်ဟာ

They're shocked.

ပုံပြောခြင်းရဲ့ နိဒါန်းပဲဖြစ်ပါတယ်

"Now you're showing your true colors," Mom says. She thinks, "Why does he take after his dad?"

မမြင်ရတဲ့ အရာတွေကို ဇာတ်လမ်းလုပ် ပြောပြနေတာလေ

She questions him, "What kind of a person are you going to be?"

မယုံကြည်နိုင်စရာ အံ့အားသင့်ဖွယ်ရာ အခိုက်အတန့်ပါ

But you shouldn't worry.

မိဘတွေက ဂုဏ်ပြုပွဲတောင် ထလုပ်သင့်တာပါ

The moment kids start to lie is the moment storytelling begins.

ငါ့ကလေးက နောက်ဆုံးတော့ လိမ်ညာပြောတာ စတင်ပြီပဲ

တကယ် ဂုဏ်ပြုပွဲလုပ်သင့်တာပါ

They are talking about things they didn't see.

ဥပမာ‌ပြောရရင် “မေမေ သား ဒီနေ့ ကစားပြီး ပြန်လာတော့ ဂြိုဟ်သားနဲ့ တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်”

It's amazing. It's a wonderful moment.

Parents should celebrate.

အဲလိုပြောလိုက်ရင် အမေအများစုက အဓိပ္ပါယ်မရှိတာတွေ ပြောမနေနဲ့ဆိုပြီး

"Hurray! My boy finally started to lie!"

ကလေးကို ဆူကြရောလေ

အဲ့လို မလုပ်ကြပဲနဲ့ စံထားသင့်တာကတော့ ဒီလိုမိဘမျိုး‌တွေပါ

All right! It calls for celebration.

For example, a kid says, "Mom, guess what? I met an alien on my way home."

“ဟုတ်လား ဂြိုဟ်သားလား ဘယ်လိုပုံစံလဲ ဂြိုဟ်သားက သားကို ဘာပြောလိုက်သေးလဲ

ဘယ်မှာ တွေ့ခဲ့တာလဲ” “စတိုးဆိုင်ရှေ့မှာ”

Then a typical mom responds, "Stop that nonsense."

ဒီလိုစကားမျိုးတွေကို ကလေးနဲ့ အပေးအယူမျှမျှ ပြောပေးရင်

Now, an ideal parent is someone who responds like this:

ကလေးက သူ စမိတဲ့ မဖြစ်နိုင်တဲ့ အကြောင်းအရာဇာတ်လမ်းကို တာဝန်ယူဖို့အတွက်

"Really? An alien, huh? What did it look like? Did it say anything?

နောက်ဆက်ပြီး ပြောဖို့ ဖြစ်လာတာပေါ့ဗျာ

ပြီးတော့ အဲ့လိုဇာတ်လမ်း ဆက်ပြောဖို့ ဖြစ်လာပြီး

Where did you meet it?" "Um, in front of the supermarket."

ဇာတ်လမ်းဇာတ်ကွက်တွေ ဆက်ဖော်တော့တာပေါ့

When you have a conversation like this,

ဒါဟာ သေချာပေါက် ကလေးကလားဆန်တဲ့ ပုံပြင်ဆိုပေမဲ့

the kid has to come up with the next thing to say to be responsible for what he started.

ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းအတွက် နောက်တစ်ကြောင်းကို စဥ်းစားရပြီး

ဆက်ဆက်တွေးနေရတယ်ဆိုတာကိုက

ကျွန်တော့်လို ပရော်ဖက်ရှင်နယ်စာရေးဆရာ တစ်ဦးရဲ့ အလုပ်နဲ့ ထပ်တူကျတဲ့ ကိစ္စပါပဲ

Soon, a story develops.

Of course this is an infantile story,

ပုံမှန် အခြေခံ သဘောတရားအရ မကွာခြားလှပါဘူး

Roland Barthes က Flaubert ရဲ့ ဝတ္ထုအကြောင်း ဒီလိုပြောဖူးပါတယ်

but thinking up one sentence after the next

’Flaubert က ဝတ္ထုရေးတာ မဟုတ်ဘဲ

is the same thing a professional writer like me does.

ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းနဲ့ နောက်တစ်ကြောင်းကို ချိတ်ဆက်ပေးရုံသက်သက်ပဲ’ တဲ့

အဲဒီ ဝါကျတစ်ခုနဲ့တစ်ခု ကြားက Eros

In essence, they are not different.

အဲဒါကသာ Flaubert ဝတ္ထုရဲ့ အနှစ်သာရပဲလို့ ပြောခဲ့ပါတယ်

Roland Barthes once said of Flaubert's novels,

ဟုတ်ပါတယ် ဝတ္ထုဟာ အခြေခံအရ ရှေ့မှာ ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်းရေးပြီး နောက်မှာ

"Flaubert did not write a novel.

ထို ဝါကျကို မကျိုးပျက်စေတဲ့ နယ်ပယ်အတွင်းကနေပဲ

He merely connected one sentence after another.

The eros between sentences, that is the essence of Flaubert's novel."

နောက်တစ်ကြောင်းကို ရေးရတာပါ

ဒီလိုနဲ့ ဆက်ရေးပြီး ချိတ်ဆက်သွားရတဲ့ သဘောပါ

ဒီဝါကျကို တစ်ချက်ကြည့်ကြည့်ပါ

That's right -- a novel, basically, is writing one sentence,

ဘယ်က ဝါကျလဲဆိုတာ သိကြတယ်မလား

Franz Kafka ရဲ့ The Metamorphosis က ပထမ စာကြောင်း ဖြစ်ပါတယ်

then, without violating the scope of the first one,

အဲလို မခံမရပ်နိုင်ဖွယ်ရာ ဝါကျကို ရေးထည့်ပြီးနောက်မှာ

writing the next sentence.

And you continue to make connections.

ဒီဝါကျကို ပြန်ခံရပ်နိုင်အောင် ဆက်ရေးချသွားတာဟာ အမှန်တော့

Take a look at this sentence:

ခေတ်ပေါ်စာပေ၏ ဂန္ဓဝင်တွင်လက်ရာဖြစ်တဲ့ Franz Kafkaရဲ့The Metamorphosisပါပဲ

"One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in his bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug."

Yes, it's the first sentence of Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis."

သိပ်ထူးခြားတာမရှိပါဘူး

ဒီဝါကျကို ရေးခဲ့ပေမဲ့ အဖေကိုတော့ မပြခဲ့ပါဘူး

Writing such an unjustifiable sentence

Franz Kafka က အဖေနဲ့ ဆက်ဆံရေး သိပ် မကောင်းခဲ့လို့ပါ

and continuing in order to justify it,

တစ်ယောက်တည်း အဲဒီဝါကျကို ရေးသွားခဲ့တာပါ အဖေ့ကိုသာ ပြမိခဲ့ရင်

Kafka's work became the masterpiece of contemporary literature.

အဖေက ”ဒီကလေး‌ နောက်ဆုံးတော့ ရူးသွားပြီပဲ” လို့ တွေးမှာပါ

Kafka did not show his work to his father.

ဟုတ်ပါတယ် အနုပညာဆိုတာ အတိုင်းအတာတစ်ခုအထိ ရူးသွပ်မှုပါ

He was not on good terms with his father.

ပြီး‌တော့ နောက်ဝါကျကို ဆက်တည်ဆောက်သွားတာဟာ

ကလေးငယ် ပြုမူလိုက်တာနဲ့ ကြီးကြီးမားမား ကွာခြားမှု မရှိတဲ့ ကိစ္စပါ

On his own, he wrote these sentences.

အလိမ်အညာ စပြောတဲ့ ဒီကလေးဟာ

Had he shown his father, "My boy has finally lost it," he would've thought.

ဇာတ်လမ်းပြောပြသူအနေနဲ့ ပထမခြေလှမ်းကို ချလှမ်းနေတာပါ

And that's right. Art is about going a little nuts

အခု ကလေးတွေ အနုပညာကို လုပ်ပါတယ်

and justifying the next sentence,

ပင်ပန်းရကောင်းမှန်း မသိ ပျော်‌ပျော်ကြီး လုပ်ကြတယ်

which is not much different from what a kid does.

တစ်လောက ဂျယ်ဂျူကျွန်း သွားတုန်းကဆို

ကလေးတွေကို လွှတ်ပေးထားတော့ ရေထဲမှာ ဆော့ကြ ကစားကြနဲ့ပေါ့လေ

A kid who has just started to lie

is taking the first step as a storyteller.

ကလေးအများစုကလည်း ရေကြိုက်ကြတာကိုး

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကလေးတချို့ကျတော့ သဲပြင်‌‌ပေါ်မှာပဲ အတော်ကြာ နေကြတယ်

Kids do art.

They don't get tired and they have fun doing it.

သဲနဲ့ တောင်ပုံဖော်လိုက် ပင်လယ်လုပ်ရတာနဲ့ ပင်လယ်မဟုတ်ဘူး

I was in Jeju Island a few days ago.

တောင်ပုံဖော်တယ် ဟိုဟိုဒီဒီ လူပုံတွေလုပ်မယ် ခွေးရုပ်တွေရောပေါ့နော်

When kids are on the beach, most of them love playing in the water.

မိဘတွေကျတော့ လိုက်တားနေတာ

လှိုင်းတွေတက်လာရင် ဒါတွေ အကုန်ပျောက်ကုန်မှာ

But some of them spend a lot of time in the sand,

ပြောချင်တာက အသုံးမဝင်ပါဘူးပေါ့လေ

အလကားအလုပ်တွေပါပေ့ါ

making mountains and seas -- well, not seas,

ကလေးတွေကျတော့ အဲလိုတွေ ဂရုစိုက်မနေဘူး

but different things -- people and dogs, etc.

လုပ်နေရတာကိုပဲ ပျော်နေတာ

ဆက်တိုက် ဒါတွေနဲ့ပဲ ဆော့နေကြတာပေါ့ဗျာ

ကလေးတွေက တစ်ယောက်ယောက် ခိုင်းလို့ လုပ်နေကြတာ မဟုတ်ဘူး

But parents tell them,

"It will all be washed away by the waves."

လုပ်ငန်းခွင်ထဲကလို အထက်လူကြီးခိုင်းလို့လည်း မဟုတ်ဘူး

In other words, it's useless.

ဘယ်သူမှ မခိုင်းဘဲကို လုပ်နေကြတာပါ

There's no need.

But kids don't mind.

လူကြီးမင်းတို့လည်း ငယ်စဥ်က

They have fun in the moment

မူလအရင်းခံ အနုပညာရဲ့ ပျော်ရွှင်မှုကို ခံစားခဲ့ရတဲ့ ကာလ သေချာပေါက် ရှိခဲ့မှာပါ

and they keep playing in the sand.

Kids don't do it because someone told them to.

ကျွန်တော် ကျောင်းမှာ ကျောင်းသားတွေကို

They aren't told by their boss

အပျော်ခဲ့ရဆုံး အချိန်အကြောင်း ရေးခိုင်းလိုက်ရင်

or anyone, they just do it.

ကျောင်းသားအတော်များများက ငယ်ငယ်တုန်းက အတွေ့အကြုံတွေကို

When you were little, I bet you spent time enjoying the pleasure of primitive art.

အခြေခံကာ အနုပညာဆန်တဲ့ အတွေ့အကြုံအကြောင်းတွေကို ပြောပြကြပါတယ်

ပထမဆုံးစန္ဒရားတီးစသင်ပြီး သူငယ်ချင်းနဲ့လက်လေးဖက်တင်တီးကြတာတွေ

When I ask my students to write about their happiest moment,

ပြီးတော့ သူငယ်ချင်းနဲ့အတူ စနောက်သရုပ်ဆောင်ကြရင်း

ရူးနေကြသလားထင်ခဲ့ရတဲ့ အတွေ့အကြုံ စတာတွေပေါ့

many write about an early artistic experience they had as a kid.

ဒီနောက် ဖလင်ကင်မရာနဲ့ရိုက်ထားတဲ့ ဓာတ်ပုံကို ပထမဆုံးထုတ်ခဲ့တဲ့အခိုက်အတန့်

ဒီလို အတွေ့အကြုံတွေအကြောင်း အများကြီး ပြောကြပါတယ်

Learning to play piano for the first time and playing four hands with a friend,

လူကြီးမင်းတို့မှာလည်း အဲ့လိုအခိုက်အတန့်တွေ ရှိခဲ့ကြမှာပါ

or performing a ridiculous skit with friends looking like idiots -- things like that.

အဲဒီအချိန်ထိ အနုပညာဟာ ပျော်စရာပါ

အလုပ် မဟုတ်တဲ့အတွက်ကြောင့်ပါ

Or the moment you developed the first film you shot with an old camera.

အလုပ်ကျတော့ ပျော်စရာမကောင်းဘူး ပင်ပန်းခက်ခဲတာပဲ များတယ်

ပြင်သစ်စာရေးဆရာ Michel Tournierမှ နာမည်ကျော်စကားစု ချန်ရစ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်

They talk about these kinds of experiences.

You must have had such a moment.

နည်းနည်းတော့ ထိမယ့်ဟာပေါ့

In that moment, art makes you happy

“အလုပ်ဆိုတာ လူသားတွေရဲ့ ဗီဇနဲ့ မကိုက်ဘူး

because it's not work.

လုပ်တာနဲ့ ပင်ပန်းလာတာက အဲဒီသက်သေပဲ” ဟုတ်တယ်မလား

Work doesn't make you happy, does it? Mostly it's tough.

ဗီဇနဲ့ ကိုက်တယ်ဆိုရင် ဘာလို့ ပင်ပန်းမှာလဲပေ့ါ

ကစားနေရတာကျတော့ မပင်ပန်းဘူးလေ

The French writer Michel Tournier has a famous saying.

ပျော်ပါးဖို့ဆို တစ်ညလုံးလည်း ရတယ်

အလုပ်ကျတော့ တစ်ညလုံးလုပ်ရမယ်ဆို အချိန်ပိုကြေး ရမှ

It's a bit mischievous, actually.

"Work is against human nature. The proof is that it makes us tired."

ဘာကြောင့်ဆိုတော့ ပင်ပန်းလို့လေ ခန္ဓာကိုယ်ကြီးလည်း နွမ်းလျကုန်လို့ပေါ့

ကလေးတွေဟာ မိမိပျော်ရွှင်မှုအတွက် အနုပညာကို လုပ်‌လေ့ရှိပါတယ်

Right? Why would work tire us if it's in our nature?

Playing doesn't tire us.

ကစားရင်း လုပ်ကြတာပါ

We can play all night long.

ဖောက်သည်မှာတာ ပေးနိုင်ဖို့အတွက် ပုံဆွဲရတာမျိုး

If we work overnight, we should be paid for overtime.

မိသားစု စားဝတ်နေရေးအတွက် ငွေရှာဖို့ စန္ဒရားတီးရတာမျိုး မဟုတ်ပါဘူး

Why? Because it's tiring and we feel fatigue.

သေချာပေါက် အဲဒီလို ကလေး မရှိဘူးလည်း မဟုတ်ဘူးပေါ့နော်

But kids, usually they do art for fun. It's playing.

သူ့ကို သိကြမယ်ထင်ပါတယ်

မိသားစု စားဝတ်နေရေးစရိတ် ရှာဖို့

They don't draw to sell the work to a client

ဥရောပတစ်ခွင် တီးခတ်ဖျော်ဖြေရေးခရီးထွက်ခဲ့တဲ့

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ပါ

or play the piano to earn money for the family.

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့နှစ်ရာချီကမို့ ဒီလိုလူငယ်လေးကို ချွင်းချက်ထားလိုက်ရအောင်ပါ

Of course, there were kids who had to.

ကာလတစ်ခုမှာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရဲ့ဒီလိုအနုပညာ ပျော်ရွှင်ဖွယ်ကစားတာတွေ အဆုံးသတ်သွားပါတယ်

You know this gentleman, right?

He had to tour around Europe to support his family --

but that was centuries ago, so we can make him an exception.

Unfortunately, at some point our art -- such a joyful pastime -- ends.

Kids have to go to lessons, to school, do homework

မူလတန်းရောက်နေတာတောင် အိမ်နံရံပေါ် ဆေးရောင်ခြယ်နေတုန်း ဆိုလို့ကတော့

and of course they take piano or ballet lessons,

အမေ့ဆီကနေ အကြီးအကျယ် ဆူခံထိမှာ သေချာပါတယ်

but they aren't fun anymore.

You're told to do it and there's competition. How can it be fun?

သေချာပေါက် ဒီလိုပဲ မဟုတ်ရင်တောင်

If you're in elementary school and you still draw on the wall,

အသက်ကြီးလာတာနဲ့အမျှ အနုပညာရှင်ဆန်ဆန် ပြုမူမိရင်

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်က ကိုယ့်ကို ကြည့်နေမှာဆိုတဲ့ အတွေးတွေ တဖြည်းဖြည်း ဝင်လာပါတယ်

you'll surely get in trouble with your mom.

ဖိအားပေးခံရမယ်၊ မှန်မှန်ကန်ကန် ပြုမူ နေထိုင်ဖို့လည်း မကြာခဏ တောင်းဆိုခံရမှာပါ

Besides,

if you continue to act like an artist as you get older,

ကျွန်တော့်တုန်းကဆိုရင်

you'll increasingly feel pressure --

အလယ်တန်းဒုတိယနှစ်တုန်းက ကျောင်းကနေပြီးတော့

ဂယောင်းဘို့ နန်းတော်မှာ ပုံဆွဲပြိုင်ပွဲသွားပြိုင်တာလေ

people will question your actions and ask you to act properly.

ကျွန်တော့်ဘာသာတော့ အကောင်းဆုံး ကြိုးစားဆွဲနေခဲ့တာ

အဲ့လိုကနေ ဆရာမတစ်ယောက် ရောက်ချလာပြီး “နင်အခု ဘာလုပ်နေတာလဲ” ဆိုပြီး

Here's my story: I was an eighth grader and I entered a drawing contest at school in Gyeongbokgung.

“ပန်းချီကြိုးစားပြီးဆွဲနေတာပါဗျ”

“ဒါဆို ဘာလို့ အမည်းရောင်ပဲ သုံးနေတာလဲ”

ကျွန်တော်က အမည်းရောင်နဲ့ပဲ ကြိုးစားခြယ်နေခဲ့တာပါ

I was trying my best, and my teacher came around

အဲ့လိုမေးလာတော့ ကျွန်တော်လည်း ပြောလိုက်တာပေါ့ဗျာ

and asked me, "What are you doing?"

“မှောင်မဲနေတဲ့ ညတစ်ညမှာ ကျီးကန်းလေး သစ်ပင်ပေါ် နားနေတဲ့ပုံ” ဆိုပြီးပေါ့

"I'm drawing diligently," I said.

အဲ့ဒါနဲ့ ဆရာမက

"Why are you using only black?"

“အော် အေးပါ ယောင်းဟာလေးက ပန်းချီမှာတော့ ပါရမီ မပါပေမဲ့

Indeed, I was eagerly coloring the sketchbook in black.

ဇာတ်လမ်းဖွဲ့ပြောတာမှာ ပါရမီရှိသားပဲကိုး”

And I explained,

ဆိုပြီး ‌ပြောပေးခဲ့ရင် ဘယ်လောက် ကောင်းလိုက်မလဲဗျာ

"It's a dark night and a crow is perching on a branch."

“ဒီကို ထွက်လာ ဒီကောင်စုတ်လေးကတော့” ဆိုပြီး ဆူတာနဲ့

Then my teacher said,

“ထွက်လာခဲ့” ဆိုပြီး ပြောတာနဲ့

"Really? Well, Young-ha, you may not be good at drawing but you have a talent for storytelling."

တကယ်က Gyeongbokgung နန်းတော် တို့ Gyeonghoeru တို့ ဆွဲရမှာကို

တစ်ယောက်တည်း အမည်းရောင်ပဲ ဆက်တိုက် ခြယ်နေတော့

Or so I wished.

ကျွန်တော့်ကို အပြင်ဆွဲခေါ်သွားရောလေ

အဲ့မှာအလယ်တန်းကျောင်းသူတွေပါ အများကြီးရောက်နေကြတာကို

"Now you'll get it, you rascal!" was the response. (Laughter)

ပြောရရင် အရှက်ကွဲသွားတာပေါ့ဗျာ

"You'll get it!" he said.

ကျွန်တော်ရှင်းပြတာတွေ အကြောင်းရင်း ဘာညာ ဒါတွေ တစ်ခုမှ အသုံးမဝင်ခဲ့ဘူး

You were supposed to draw the palace, the Gyeonghoeru, etc.,

but I was coloring everything in black,

တော်တော်လေးကို အဆူပဲခံခဲ့ရတာပါ

so he dragged me out of the group.

စံတင်လောက်တဲ့ ဆရာသာဆိုရင် စောစောက ကျွန်တော်ပြောသလို ပြောပေးခဲ့မှာပါ

There were a lot of girls there as well,

so I was utterly mortified.

None of my explanations or excuses were heard,

သူ့မှာ ပန်းချီပါရမီတော့ မရှိပါလား ဂင်ယောင်းဟာ ဆိုတဲ့ ကလေးလေးက

ဒါပေမယ့် စကားကို ဖန်တီးပြောဆိုနိုင်စွမ်း ရှိပါလား ဆိုပြီး

and I really got it big time.

အားပေးစကားပြောပေးမှာပါ ဒီလိုဆရာမျိုးတကယ်ကြုံတောင့်ကြုံခဲပါ

If he was an ideal teacher, he would have responded like I said before,

နောက်ကျတော့ ကျွန်တော် အရွယ်ရောက်လာပြီး

ဥရောပဘက် ခေတ်ပြိုင် အနုပညာပြခန်းဆီ သွားကြည့်တော့

"Young-ha may not have a talent for drawing,

but he has a gift for making up stories," and he would have encouraged me.

ခံပြင်းလိုက်တာဆိုတာ ဒီလိုပန်းချီတွေ ပြထားကြတာလေ

But such a teacher is seldom found.

သူတို့ကျတော့ Basel တို့ ဘာတို့မှာ အပြခံရတယ်

Later, I grew up and went to Europe's galleries --

I was a university student -- and I thought this was really unfair.

ငါ့ကျ အကြိမ်း‌မောင်းခံရပြီး ပန်းချီပုံကို ပါးစပ်မှာကိုက်

Look what I found. (Laughter)

နန်းတော်ရှေ့မှာ မတ်တပ်ရပ်ခိုင်းခဲ့တာ ဘာကြောင့်များလဲ

ဒါပဲကြည့်ပါဦး ဒီလိုတွေလေ ရွှံ့စေးရောင်နံရံစက္ကူနဲ့မတူဘူးလား

Works like this were hung in Basel while I was punished

ပြီးတော့ ‌ခေတ်ပြိုင်အနုပညာဆိုတာဘာလဲ နောက်မှ သိတာ

သေချာတာတော့ သူတို့ ကျွန်တော့်လို ကျီးကန်း ဘာဖြစ်ညာဖြစ်နဲ့

and stood in front of the palace with my drawing in my mouth.

တောကျတဲ့ စကားမျိုး ပြောမနေဘူးပေါ့ဗျာ

အများစုက ခေါင်းစဥ်မပါပါ Untitle ဘာညာဆိုပြီး တပ်ထားတာ

Look at this. Doesn't it look just like wallpaper?

ဘာဖြစ်ဖြစ်ပါ ခေတ်ပြိုင်အနုပညာဟာ၊ ၂၀ ရာစု ခေတ်ပြိုင်အနုပညာဆိုတာ

Contemporary art, I later discovered, isn't explained by a lame story like mine.

ထူးထူးဆန်းဆန်း တခုခု လုပ်ထည့်ပြီး

No crows are brought up.

နေရာလွတ်တွေကို ရှင်းပြချက် အဓိပ္ပါယ်ဖော်ဆောင်မှုတွေနဲ့

Most of the works have no title, Untitled.

Anyways, contemporary art in the 20th century

ဥပမာအနေနဲ့ ပိုပြီး နာမည်ကြီးတဲ့ ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်ကိုကြည့်ရရင်

is about doing something weird and filling the void with explanation and interpretation --

ဒါက Pablo Picasso ရဲ့လက်ရာပါ

စက်ဘီးထိုင်ခုံမှာ လက်ကိုင်ကို သွားကပ်ထားပြီးတော့

essentially the same as I did.

Of course, my work was very amateur,

နွားသိုးခေါင်းဆိုပြီး ပြောတော့လည်း ဟုတ်သလိုလိုပေါ့

but let's turn to more famous examples.

နောက်တစ်ခုကကျ အိမ်သာခွက်ကို ရေပန်းတဲ့လေ

This is Picasso's.

ရယ်ဒီမိတ် ရေပန်းတဲ့ ဒီလိုပြောခဲ့တဲ့ Duchamp ကိုပဲ

He stuck handlebars into a bike seat and called it "Bull's Head." Sounds convincing, right?

ဥပမာကြည့်မယ်ဆိုရင် ဒီရှင်းပြချက်နဲ့ ထူးထူးဆန်းဆန်းလုပ်တာတွေရဲ့

ကြားကွက်လပ်ကို ဖြည့်တာဟာ

ပုံပြင်တွေနဲ့ ဖြည့်စွက်တယ်ဆိုတာ တကယ်တော့ ခေတ်ပြိုင်အနုပညာကနေ လုပ်တဲ့ ကိစ္စပဲ

Next, a urinal was placed on its side and called "Fountain".

ပီကာဆိုကတော့ စကားပါ သေချာချန်ခဲ့တာပါ

That was Duchamp.

“ငါက ကိုယ်မြင်ရတာကို ဆွဲတာမျိုးမဟုတ်ပဲ အတွေးဝင်မိတာကို ဆွဲတာပါ” တဲ့

So filling the gap between explanation and a weird act with stories --

အဲ့လိုသာဆို Gyeonghoiroo ပုံမဆွဲလည်း ရတယ်ဆိုတဲ့ သဘောပဲ

that's indeed what contemporary art is all about.

ဒီစကားကိုသာ ကျွန်တော် အလယ်တန်းတုန်းက သိခဲ့ရင်

ဆရာမနဲ့ တစ်ခါလောက်တော့ ပြိုင်ပြောမိခဲ့မှာပဲကို

Picasso even made the statement,

ကံမကောင်းစွာပဲ ကျွန်တော်တို့ရင်တွင်းက အနုပညာရှင်ငယ်လေးတွေဟာ

"I draw not what I see but what I think."

ကျွန်‌တော်တို့ အနုပညာဆန့်ကျင်သူတွေနဲ့ ရင်ဆိုင်မတွေ့ခင်ကတည်းကကို

Yes, it means I didn't have to draw Gyeonghoeru.

လည်ချိုး အသတ်ခံထားရတာပါ

I wish I knew what Picasso said back then. I could have argued better with my teacher.

အစောကြီးကတည်းကကို ပိတ်လှောင်ခံထားရတာပါ

တကယ် ရင်နင့်ဖွယ်ရာပါပဲ

Unfortunately, the little artists within us

ဒီလို အနုပညာရှင်ငယ်လေးတွေ ပိတ်လှောင်ခံရတာ သို့ နှင်ထုတ်ခံရတာ သို့ အသတ်ခံရရင်

are choked to death before we get to fight against the oppressors of art.

ဘယ်လိုတွေ ဆက်ဖြစ်မလဲ

အလိုရမ္မက်တွေဆိုတာ ပျောက်ပျက်မသွားပါဘူး

ကျွန်တော်တို့က ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို ‌ ဖော်ပြချင်တယ် မိမိကိုယ်ကို ထုတ်ပြချင်တာကို

They get locked in.

That's our tragedy.

ဒီလိုတွေဖြစ်ကုန်တော့ မကြာခဏ အနည်းနဲ့အများ အနုပညာလောဘတွေက အမှောင်ခြမ်းကနေ ထွက်လာရော

So what happens when little artists get locked in, banished or even killed?

ကာရာအိုကေခန်းသွားပြီး ကျိန်းသေ ဒီလို သီချင်းဆိုတဲ့ လူတွေ ရှိတယ်

Our artistic desire doesn't go away.

She’s gone သို့ Hotel California တွေဆို

We want to express, to reveal ourselves,

ဂီတာတီးဟန်တွေ လုပ်ရင်း

but with the artist dead, the artistic desire reveals itself in dark form.

အများအားဖြင့် စိတ်အနှောင့်အယှက်ဖြစ်စေတာ များတာပေါ့ဗျာ

တချို့ကျ ရော့ကာကြီးတွေ ထဖြစ်သွားတဲ့သူတွေလည်း ရှိတယ်

In karaoke bars, there are always people who sing

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ခန်းမထဲသွား ကကွက်တွေ နင်းနေတာ ဖြစ်ဖြစ်

"She's Gone" or "Hotel California,"

ဇာတ်အိမ်ဖွဲ့တာမျိုးသာ လုပ်ခဲ့ရရင် ပိုပျော်ရွှင်နေကြမဲ့ လူတွေက

miming the guitar riffs.

ညလုံးပေါက် မကောင်းတဲ့ ကောမန့်တွေ လိုက်ရေးတာဖြစ်ဖြစ် ဒီလို

Usually they sound awful. Awful indeed.

Some people turn into rockers like this.

အမှောင်ခြမ်းဘက် ဦးတည်ပြီး စာရေးတာတွေ ဖြစ်ပေါ်စေပါတယ်

Or some people dance in clubs.

အဲဒါကြောင့် တခါတလေ ကလေးတွေ ကစားတာ စောင့်ပေးနေရာက

People who would have enjoyed telling stories

ကိုယ်က ပိုပျော်မြူးလာတဲ့ အဖေတွေရှိတယ်လေ

Lego အတုံးဆက်တာ ပလတ်စတစ်အရုပ်ဆက်တာမျိုးတွေ လုပ်ရင်းကပေါ့လေ

end up trolling on the Internet all night long.

“အသာနေစမ်းပါ အဖေလုပ်ကြည့်မယ်”ဆိုလို့ကတော့

That's how a writing talent reveals itself on the dark side.

ကလေးက စိတ်ဝင်စားမှုပျောက် တခြားနေရာဆီ ရောက်သွားတောင်

အဖေ တစ်ယောက်တည်း ရဲတိုက်တွေဆောက် ဟိုဟာဆက် ဒီဟာဆက်နဲ့ ဖြစ်နေတာပါ

Sometimes we see dads get more excited than their kids

ဒီလို ကျွန်တော်တို့ရင်ထဲက အနုပညာလှုံ့ဆော်မှုတွေဟာ

playing with Legos or putting together plastic robots.

ဖိနှိပ်ခံထားရရုံတင်ပါ ပျောက်ကွယ်သွားတာ မဟုတ်တဲ့သဘောပဲ

They go, "Don't touch it. Daddy will do it for you."

အဆိုးဘက်ခြမ်းကနေလည်း ထွက်လာတတ်တယ်

The kid has already lost interest and is doing something else,

အများအားဖြင့် မနာလိုမှုအနေနဲ့ ပေါ်တတ်ပါတယ်

but the dad alone builds castles.

ဒီသီချင်းသိတယ်မလား “တီဗီမှာ ငါပါလာရင် ကောင်းမှာပဲ” ဘာကြောင့်များလဲ

This shows the artistic impulses inside us are suppressed, not gone.

တီဗီထဲမှာဆို ကျွန်တော်တို့ ဖြစ်ချင် လုပ်ချင်ပေမဲ့

But they can often reveal themselves negatively, in the form of jealousy.

မလုပ်နိုင်တဲ့ အရာတွေကို လုပ်နေတဲ့ သူတွေနဲ့ အပြည့်ပါ

You know the song "I would love to be on TV"? Why would we love it?

သီချင်းဆိုက သရုပ်ဆောင်နေရုံသက်သက်မဟုတ်ပဲ

အဲ့လိုလုပ်လေလေ ချီးကျူးခံရတယ်လေ

အဲဒါကြောင့်မို့ အဲဒီလူတွေကို ဆိုးဆိုးရွားရွား မနာလို စဖြစ်ကုန်ရော

TV is full of people who do what we wished to do,

but never got to.

ရီမုကြီးကိုင် အာဏာရှင်ကြီးအဖြစ်နဲ့ မကောင်းပြော ဝေဖန်တာတွေ စတော့တာပေါ့

They dance, they act -- and the more they do, they are praised.

“ဟဲ့ အဲ့ဒါကို သရုပ်ဆောင်တာလို့ ခေါ်လား ဆိုးလိုက်တာ”

“တလွဲတွေ အဲဒါလား သီချင်းဆိုတာ သီချင်းလည်း မဆိုတတ်ပဲ ဘာကို အဆိုတော်လဲ”

So we start to envy them.

ဒီလိုတွေ ပြောဖို့ ဖြစ်လာကုန်ပါရော

We become dictators with a remote and start to criticize the people on TV.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အတွင်းစိတ်ထဲက မနာလိုမှုဆိုတာ ကိုယ်က ယုတ်မာတတ်တဲ့သူမို့လို့ မဟုတ်ပဲ

ဒီလို နုနုနယ်နယ်အနုပညာရှင်လေးတွေကို ရင်ထဲမှာ ပိတ်လှောင်ထားတာကြောင့်မို့သာ

"He just can't act." "You call that singing? She can't hit the notes."

ပေါ်လာတဲ့ ‌အခြေအနေဖြစ်တယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော်တော့ အတွေးဝင်မိပါတယ်

We easily say these sorts of things.

အဲ့လိုသာဆိုရင် ဘယ်လို လုပ်သင့်သလဲ ဆိုတော့

We get jealous, not because we're evil,

ဟုတ်ပါတယ်

ကျွန်တော်တို့ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဟန်ဖြင့် အနုပညာကို အခုချက်ချင်း စတင်လုပ်ဖို့ လိုအပ်ပါတယ်

but because we have little artists pent up inside us.

ချက်ချင်း တီဗီကို ပိတ်

အင်တာနက်ချိတ်ဆက်မှုကို ပိတ်ချဖြတ်တောက်ပြီး

That's what I think.

ထပြီး တခုခု စလုပ်လိုက်ရင် ရပါပြီ

What should we do then?

ပြဇာတ်ကျောင်းမှာ ကျောင်းသားတွေကို သင်ပေးတဲ့အခါ

Yes, that's right.

ကျွန်တော်သင်ပေးရတာ မဟုတ်ပေမယ့် ပြဇာတ်ဆိုတဲ့ ဘာသာရပ် ရှိတယ်

Right now, we need to start our own art.

ဒီကျောင်းကိုလာတက်တဲ့ ကျောင်းသားအားလုံး ဒီဘာသာရပ်မှာ ပြဇာတ် တစ်ခု တင်သွင်းရတယ်

Right this minute, we can turn off TV,

log off the Internet,

get up and start to do something.

ဒါပေမဲ့ သရုပ်ဆောင်မှုနဲ့ ဝင်လာတဲ့ ကျောင်းသားတွေဟာ သရုပ်ဆောင်လို့ မရဘူး

Where I teach students in drama school,

ဥပမာ‌ အဲဒီကျောင်းသားတွေက ပြဇာတ်ရေးတာဖြစ်ဖြစ်

there's a course called Dramatics.

စာရေးအဓိက ကျောင်းသားတွေကျ စင်မြင့်ထက် သုခုမပညာဖန်တီးတာဖြစ်ဖြစ်

In this course, all students must put on a play.

စင်မြင့်ဖန်တီးတဲ့မေဂျာကျောင်းသားတွေကျ သရုပ်ဆောင်လုပ်ပြီး

ပြဇာတ်ကို ဖန်တီးရတာပါ

However, acting majors are not supposed to act.

ကျောင်းသားတွေက ပထမတော့ ငါလုပ်နိုင်ပါ့မလား ထင်ကြပေမယ့်

နောက်ကျတော့ အရမ်းပျော်ကုန်ရော

They can write the play, for example,

ပြဇာတ်လုပ်ခိုင်းလို့ဆိုပြီး မကြိုက်ဖြစ်နေတဲ့သူ မတွေ့ခဲ့ရသလောက်ပဲ

and the writers may work on stage art.

ကျောင်း၊စစ်တပ်၊ နောက်ဆုံးစိတ္တဇဆေးရုံမှာတောင်ခိုင်းရင်

Likewise, stage art majors may become actors, and in this way you put on a show.

လုံးဝကို ပျော်ပျော်ကြီးလုပ်ကြမှာပါ

Students at first wonder whether they can actually do it,

စစ်တပ်ထဲမှာ လုပ်ကြတာလည်း တွေ့ဖူးပြီး

နေရာအတော်များများမှာ ပြဇာတ်ကပြရင်း ပျော်နေတဲ့သူတွေကို တွေ့ခဲ့ရပါတယ်

but later they have so much fun. I rarely see anyone who is miserable doing a play.

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်တော့်မှာ ဒီလိုအတွေ့အကြုံမျိုးလည်း ရှိဖူးတယ်

In school, the military or even in a mental institution, once you make people do it, they enjoy it.

စာရေးတဲ့အတန်းချိန်မှာ ဒီလို လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းမျိုး ကျောင်းသားတွေကိုပေးပါတယ်

I saw this happen in the army -- many people had fun doing plays.

ဒီလို ကျောင်းသားတွေ စုဝေးနေတယ်မလား

ဒါပေမဲ့ စာရေးခြင်းအထူးပြု မဟုတ်တဲ့ ကျောင်းသားတွေလည်း များတယ်

I have another experience:

သုခုမပညာအထူးပြု ၊ ဂီတအထူးပြု‌ ကျောင်းသားတွေ များတယ်

In my writing class, I give students a special assignment.

ဒီကျောင်းသားတွေက ငါတော့ စာမရေးနိုင်လောက်ဘူးပဲ တွေးကြတာ

အဲဒါကြောင့် ကျွန်တော် စက္ကူအလွတ်တွေ ဝေပေးပြီး ခေါင်းစဥ်တစ်ခုစီ ပေးလိုက်တယ်

I have students like you in the class -- many who don't major in writing.

ဥပမာ ခေါင်းစဥ်ကတော့ ရိုးရိုးပါပဲ

ငယ်ငယ်တုန်းက ကံဆိုးခဲ့တဲ့ အကြောင်း ရေးခိုင်းတာမျိုးပါ

Some major in art or music and think they can't write.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ရူးရူးသွပ်သွပ်ကို ရေးခိုင်းတာပါ

ရူးသွပ်စွာပေါ့ဗျာ

So I give them blank sheets of paper and a theme.

ကျွန်တော်လိုက်ကြည့်ပြီး အားပေးအား‌မြှောက် လိုက်လှုံ့ဆော်တာ

“မြန်မြန်ရေး” ဆိုပြီး ရူးရူးသွပ်သွပ်ကို ၂နာရီဆို ၂နာရီ ၊ ၁နာရီဆို ၁နာရီအတွင်း

It can be a simple theme:

Write about the most unfortunate experience in your childhood.

အရင်ဆုံး ၅မိနစ်လောက်ပဲ အတွေးပုံဖော်ပြီး ရေးချသွားရတာပါ

There's one condition: You must write like crazy. Like crazy!

ကျွန်တော်ဒီလို စာကို ‌ရူးသွပ်စွာ ရေးတဲ့အချိန် လုပ်ပေးရတဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်းက

I walk around and encourage them,

ဖြည်းဖြည်းရေးနေရင်း အတွေးတွေ များလာရင်

"Come on, come on!" They have to write like crazy for an hour or two.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ရင်တွင်းက အနုပညာရှင် မိစ္ဆာကြီး နိုးထလာပါတယ်

They only get to think for the first five minutes.

ဒီမိစ္ဆာဟာ စာမရေးနိုင်အောင်လုပ်တဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်း ရာချီပြီးတော့

The reason I make them write like crazy is because

ကိုယ်ဒီစာကို မရေးနိုင်တဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်း ရာနဲ့ချီ ပြောရင်း

when you write slowly and lots of thoughts cross your mind,

“သူများတွေ မင်းကို လှောင်ရယ်ကြမှာ ဒါလား စာရေးတာကလည်းကွာ”

the artistic devil creeps in.

ဝါကျကြီးကလည်း လက်ရေးကိုလည်း ကြည့်ပါဦး

This devil will tell you hundreds of reasons

ဒီလိုတွေ အမျိုးမျိုး ပြောနေမှာပါ

ဒီမိစ္ဆာကြီး လိုက်မလာနိုင်အောင် မြန်မြန် ရေးမှ ဖြစ်ပါမယ်

why you can't write:

ကျွန်တော်သင်ခဲ့တဲ့ အတန်းထဲမှာ တွေ့ခဲ့တဲ့ အကောင်းဆုံး‌ စာတွေဟာ

"People will laugh at you. This is not good writing!

အချိန်လုံလုံလောက်လောက် ပေးထားတဲ့ လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းတွေမှာ မဟုတ်ပဲ

What kind of sentence is this? Look at your handwriting!"

ကျောင်းသားတွေ မိနစ် ၄၀၊ တစ်နာရီအတွင်း ထိုင်ပြီးတော့

It will say a lot of things.

You have to run fast so the devil can't catch up.

ကျွန်တော့်‌ရှေ့မှာတင် ခဲတံကိုင် ရေးရတဲ့ စာတွေမှာ တွေ့ခဲ့ရတာပါ

The really good writing I've seen in my class

အဲဒီကျောင်းသားတွေက အာရုံစူးစိုက်မှုတွေထဲ မျောပါသွားတာပါ

နောက်ကျ မိနစ်၃၀၊ ၄၀ ‌လောက်ရောက်သွားရင်

was not from the assignments with a long deadline,

ဘာရေးနေမှန်းတောင် မသိတော့ပဲ အသားကုန်ရေးကုန်ရော

but from the 40- to 60-minute crazy writing students did

အဲဒီအချိန်မှာ ကျွန်တော်တို့ကို အနှောင့်အယှက်ပေးမဲ့ မိစ္ဆာ ပေါ်မလာတော့ဘူး

in front of me with a pencil.

ဒါကြောင့် ဒီလိုပြောလို့ရနိုင်ပါတယ်

The students go into a kind of trance.

အနုပညာရှင်မဖြစ်နိုင်တဲ့ အကြောင်းရင်းရာချီမဟုတ်ဘဲ

After 30 or 40 minutes, they write without knowing what they're writing.

ဖြစ်လာရုံအပြင်မရှိတဲ့ ကိုယ်ပိုင် တစ်ခုတည်းသော အကြောင်းရင်းက

And in this moment, the nagging devil disappears.

လူတစ်ယောက်ကို အနုပညာရှင်ဖြစ်စေတာပါ

မဖြစ်နိုင်ရတဲ့အကြောင်းရင်းက အရေးမကြီးပါဘူး

So I can say this:

အနုပညာရှင်အများစုဟာ ဒီလိုကြောင့် ဖြစ်လာပါ

It's not the hundreds of reasons why one can't be an artist,

အခု ကျွန်တော်တို့ရင်ထဲက မိစ္ဆာကို အိပ်ပျော်စေပြီး

မိမိရဲ့ အနုပညာကို စတင်မလို့ လုပ်တဲ့အခါမှာ

but rather, the one reason one must be that makes us artists.

ရန်သူတွေဟာ အပြင်ကနေ ‌စတင်ပေါ်လာပြန်ပါတယ်

အများစုက မိဘတွေရဲ့ မျက်နှာနဲ့ ဖြစ်နေတာ များတယ်

Why we cannot be something is not important.

Most artists became artists because of the one reason.

ပြီးတော့ အိမ်ထောင်ဖက်ရဲ့ မျက်နှာနဲ့လည်း ပေါ်လာတတ်ပေမဲ့

When we put the devil in our heart to sleep and start our own art,

သူတို့ဟာ လူကြီးမင်းတို့ရဲ့ မိဘ၊ အိမ်ထောင်ဖက်တွေ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး

မိစ္ဆာပါ

enemies appear on the outside.

မိစ္ဆာဖြစ်ပါတယ်

ခဏတာ ပြောင်းလဲပြီး ကမ္ဘာပေါ် ဆင်းလာပြီး

Mostly, they have the faces of our parents. (Laughter)

လူကြီးမင်းတို့အနုပညာဖြစ်မဲ့ လမ်းကြောင်း ၊ အနုပညာရှင်လုပ်ချင်တာကို တားနေတဲ့ လူတွေပါ

Sometimes they look like our spouses,

ဒီလူတွေမှာ မှော်ဆန်တဲ့ မေးခွန်းမျိုးရှိတယ်

but they are not your parents or spouses.

အဲဒါဘာလဲဆိုတော့ ကျွန်တော်တို့က “ငါ သရုပ်ဆောင်ကြည့်မလားလို့”

They are devils. Devils.

“သရုပ်ဆောင်သင်တန်းကျာင်းရှိတာ တက်ကြည့်မလားလို့လေ” ဆိုပြီးဖြစ်ဖြစ်

They came to Earth briefly transformed

to stop you from being artistic, from becoming artists.

“အီတလီသီချင်း သင်မလားလို့” ဆိုပြီးပြောလိုက်ရင်

“အော်ဟုတ်လား သရုပ်ဆောင်လား အဲဒါလုပ်ပြီး ဘာလုပ်ဖို့လဲ”

And they have a magic question.

မှော်ဆန်ဆန်မေးခွန်းနော်

When we say, "I think I'll try acting. There's a drama school in the community center," or

အဲဒါလုပ်ပြီးဘာလုပ်ဖို့လဲ ဆိုပြီး မေးကြရော

ဒါပေမဲ့ အနုပညာဆိုတာက တခုခုလုပ်ဖို့ လုပ်နေတာမျိုးမှ မဟုတ်တာ

"I'd like to learn Italian songs," they ask, "Oh, yeah? A play? What for?"

အနုပညာဆိုတာ နောက်ဆုံး အဆုံးစွန်ဆုံးသော ပန်းတိုင်ပါ

ကျွန်တော်တို့စိတ်ဝိဉာဥ်ကို ကယ်တင်ပေးပြီး

The magic question is, "What for?"

ဝမ်းပန်းတသာ နေနိုင်အောင် ပြုလုပ်ပေးတာမျိုးပါ

အရက်နဲ့ ဆေး အကူအညီမရှိ ပျော်ပျော်ရွှင်ရွှင် နေနိုင်အောင်

But art is not for anything.

ကိုယ်ပိုင် ဖော်ပြချက်‌တွေကို လုပ်ဖြစ်အောင် ကူညီပေးတာပါ

Art is the ultimate goal.

အဲဒါကြောင့် ဒီလိုမေးခွန်းနဲ့ပက်သက်ပြီး ဒီလိုလက်တွေ့ဝါဒသမားတွေရဲ့ မေးခွန်းကို

It saves our souls and makes us live happily.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ ရဲရဲတင်းတင်း တုန့်ပြန်နိုင်ဖို့ လိုအပ်ပါတယ်

It helps us express ourselves and be happy without the help of alcohol or drugs.

“အေး ဒီအတိုင်း ပျော်လို့ လုပ်တာ စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာကောင်းလို့ လုပ်တာ”

ဆောရီးကွာ ငါပဲ ပျော်နေလို့

ငါ့ဘာသာ အရင်လုပ်နှင့်မယ်ကွာ ဆိုတာမျိုး ပြောနိုင်တဲ့ လူဖြစ်ရမယ်လို့ ဆိုလိုတာပါ

So in response to such a pragmatic question,

စံထားလောက်တယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော်တွေးမိတဲ့ အနာဂတ်က

we need to be bold.

ကျွန်တော်တို့အားလုံးဟာ ကိုယ်ပိုင်လက္ခဏာ အမျိုးမျိုးကို ပိုင်ဆိုင်ထားတာမို့

"Well, just for the fun of it. Sorry for having fun without you,"

ဒီကိုယ်ပိုင်လက္ခဏာတွေထဲကမှ

တစ်ခုတလေကပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ် အနုပညာရှင်ဖြစ်လာစေဖို့ပါ

is what you should say. "I'll just go ahead and do it anyway."

ကျွန်တော် နယူးရောက်သွားတုန်းက တက္ကစီ စီးတာ

ကားနောက်ခုံကနေလိုက်စီးလာရော

The ideal future I imagine is where we all have multiple identities,

ကျွန်တော့်ရှေ့မှာ ပြဇာတ်နဲ့ တခုခု သက်ဆိုင်တဲ့ ဟာလေး ကပ်ထားတာ တွေ့ရတယ်

အဲဒါနဲ့ “ဒါ ဘာလဲ”လို့ မေးလိုက်တော့

at least one of which is an artist.

သူ့ကိုယ်ရေးအကျဥ်းတဲ့လေ

“ဒါဆို ခင်ဗျားက ဘာလုပ်တဲ့သူလဲ” ဆိုတော့ ပြဇာတ်သရုပ်ဆောင်တဲ့

Once I was in New York and got in a cab. I took the backseat,

တက္ကစီမောင်း၊ ပြဇာတ်လည်း ကပေါ့

အဲဒါနဲ့ “ဘာဇာတ်ကောင်မျိုးကို အဓိကထားသရုပ်‌ဆောင်ရလဲ”မေးတော့

and in front of me I saw something related to a play.

ဂုဏ်ယူစွာပဲ King Lear အဖြစ် သရုပ်ဆောင်တာတဲ့

အိုး King Lear

So I asked the driver, "What is this?"

“ငါဘယ်သူလဲ ပြောနိုင်တာ ဘယ်သူလဲ”

He said it was his profile. "Then what are you?" I asked. "An actor," he said.

King Learရဲ့ မိမိုက်တဲ့ ဇာတ်ညွှန်းစာသားလေ

ဒါဟာ ကျွန်တော်အိပ်မက်မက်နေတဲ့ လောကမျိုးပါ

He was a cabby and an actor. I asked, "What roles do you usually play?"

ဒီလူက နေ့ဘက်ဆို ဂေါက်ရိုက်ကစားသမားဆိုရင် ညဘက်ကျ စာရေးဆရာ ဖြစ်မယ်

He proudly said he played King Lear.

တက္ကစီသမားတဖြစ်လဲ ပြဇာတ်သရုပ်ဆောင်

King Lear.

ဘဏ်ဝန်ထမ်းတဖြစ်လဲ ပန်းချီဆရာ

"Who is it that can tell me who I am?" -- a great line from King Lear.

အဲဒီလိုလုပ်ရင်း လျှို့ဝှက်စွာ တဖန် ပွင့်လင်းစွာ

That's the world I dream of.

ကိုယ့်အနုပညာကိုယ် လုပ်ဆောင်သွားတာမျိုးပေ့ါ

Someone is a golfer by day and writer by night.

၁၉၉၀ ခုနှစ် ခေတ်ပြိုင်အကရဲ့ ဂန္ဓဝင်ပညာရှင်ကြီးဖြစ်တဲ့

Martha Graham ကိုရီးယားကို ရောက်လာတုန်းက

Or a cabby and an actor, a banker and a painter,

ဂင်ဖိုလေဆိပ်မှာ ဘီးတပ်ကုလားထိုင်ပေါ် ထိုင်ပြီး

secretly or publicly performing their own arts.

ဒီလို အသက်၉၀ကျော် ဂန္ဓဝင်ကြီးတစ်ယောက် နိုင်ငံထဲရောက်လာတာကို မြင်လိုက်ရတာပေါ့နော်

အဲ့မှာသတင်းထောက်ကမေးလိုက်တယ်

In 1990, Martha Graham, the legend of modern dance, came to Korea.

ပုံမှန် ဒီလိုမေးခွန်းမျိုးတွေ မေးလေ့ရှိကြပါတယ်

ကောင်းကောင်း ကတတ်ဖို့ဆိုရင် ဘယ်လိုလုပ်ရမလဲ လို့ပေါ့

The great artist, then in her 90s, arrived at Gimpo Airport

ကိုရီးယား ‌အကကျောင်းသားတွေအတွက် စကားတစ်ခွန်းလောက် ပြောပေးပါပေါ့

ဂန္ဓဝင်ကြီးလေ ဒီပုံဆို ၁၉၄၈ ခုနှစ်က ရိုက်ထားတာ

and a reporter asked her a typical question:

၁၉၉၀ ခုနှစ်မှာ အဲဒီလို မေးခွန်းမေးကြည့်ကြတာပါ

"What do you have to do to become a great dancer?

အဲဒီလို မေးလိုက်တော့ သူကနေ ဒီလို ပြန်ဖြေလိုက်ပါတယ်

Any advice for aspiring Korean dancers?"

“JUST DO IT” ဒီအတိုင်း လုပ်သာလုပ်လိုက်

Now, she was the master. This photo was taken in 1948 and she was already a celebrated artist.

တကယ် ရင်ထဲ ထိပါတယ်

စကားလုံးလေး ၃ လုံးပဲ ပြောပြီး ပြည်ဝင်ပေါက်ကနေ တန်းထွက်သွားခဲ့ပါတယ်

In 1990, she was asked this question.

And here's what she answered:

ဟုတ်ပါတယ် အခု ကျွန်တော်တို့အတွက် လိုအပ်တာက ဘာများ ဖြစ်မလဲ

"Just do it."

အနုပညာရှင် ဖြစ်ကြစို့ ချက်ချင်း အခုချက်ချင်းပါ ဘယ်လိုလုပ်ရမှာလဲ

Wow. I was touched.

Only those three words and she left the airport. That's it.
