The theme of my talk today is,

오늘 제가 얘기 할 주제는요.

"Be an artist, right now."

예술가가 되자, 지금 당장! 입니다.

Most people, when this subject is brought up,

이런 얘기를 꺼내면 이제 보통 분들이 다 긴장하고

get tense and resist it:

약간 마음속에 저항을 하기 시작합니다.

"Art doesn't feed me, and right now I'm busy.

예술이 밥 먹여주나, 그리고 지금 바쁜데 무슨 예술

I have to go to school, get a job,

그 다음에 나는 학교도 가야 되고, 취직도 해야 되고

send my kids to lessons ... "

해야될 것도 많고, 애도 학원 보내야 되고 바쁜데

You think, "I'm too busy. I don't have time for art."

예술은 무슨 예술이냐라는 생각이 드실 겁니다.

There are hundreds of reasons why we can't be artists right now.

지금 당장 우리가 예술가가 될 수 없는 이유는 수 백가지가 있습니다.

Don't they just pop into your head?

머릿속에서 막 떠오르죠?

There are so many reasons why we can't be,

될 수 없는 이유는 정말 많아요.

indeed, we're not sure why we should be.

되야 할 이유는 잘 모르겠어요, 사실 생각해 보면

We don't know why we should be artists,

왜 되야겠는지는 잘 모르겠지만

but we have many reasons why we can't be.

어쨌든 되지 말아야 될 이유는 아주 많습니다.

Why do people instantly resist the idea of associating themselves with art?

왜 사람들은 예술이란 말을 들으면 벌써 이렇게 거부감이 들기 시작할까요?

Perhaps you think art is for the greatly gifted

어쩌면 예술이라는 것이 엄청난 재능을 타고났거나, 아니면

or for the thoroughly and professionally trained.

전문적인 훈련을 아주 지독하게 받은 사람들만 하는

그런 일이라고 생각하는 거 아닐까

And some of you may think you've strayed too far from art.

그리고 여기 계신 여러분들은

이미 예술가의 길로부터 너무나 멀어진 게 아닐까 하는

Well you might have, but I don't think so.

그런 생각을 하고 계실 수도 있다고 생각하는데

저는 아니라고 생각합니다.

This is the theme of my talk today.

그게 오늘 제가 얘기할 주제입니다.

We are all born artists.

우리는 모두 예술가로 태어납니다.

If you have kids, you know what I mean.

집에 아이가 있으신 분들은 금방 알 수 있을 겁니다.

Almost everything kids do is art.

애들이 하고 있는 거의 모든 행위들이 예술입니다.

They draw with crayons on the wall.

벽에다가, 막 벽지에다가 크레용으로 그리고

They dance to Son Dam Bi's dance on TV,

텔레비젼에서 뭐 나오면 손담비 춤 따라하고

but you can't even call it Son Dam Bi's dance -- it becomes the kids' own dance.

그 다음에 뭐 손담비 춤이라고 사실 할 수가 없어요. 걔 나름의 어떤 춤이죠.

So they dance a strange dance and inflict their singing on everyone.

그런 어떤 이상한 춤을 추고, 또 노래를 부르고

모든 사람들을 괴롭게 합니다.

Perhaps their art is something only their parents can bear,

아마 그 수준이라는 것은, 그 예술의 수준이라는 것은

and because they practice such art all day long,

자기 애 아니면 사실 견디기 어려운

그런 수준의 예술을 하루 종일 하고 있기 때문에 (웃음)

people honestly get a little tired around kids.

사실은 모두가 아이들을 좀 피곤해 합니다.

Kids will sometimes perform monodramas --

그, 혼자 아이는 일인극을 막 하기도 하고요.

playing house is indeed a monodrama or a play.

소꿉놀이라는게 사실은 일인극이고, 어떤 연극이기도 하죠.

And some kids, when they get a bit older,

그리고 어떤 아이들은 나이를 좀 먹으면

start to lie.

거짓말을 하기 시작합니다.

Usually parents remember the very first time their kid lies.

부모들이 대체로 아이가 처음 거짓말을 한 순간들을

기억하고 있는 엄마들이 많아요.

They're shocked.

충격을 받죠.

"Now you're showing your true colors," Mom says. She thinks, "Why does he take after his dad?"

"얘가 드디어 본색이 드러났구나, 지 아빠 닮아가지고

She questions him, "What kind of a person are you going to be?"

너 뭐가 될려고 그래!" 막 이러면서 애를 괴롭히는데

But you shouldn't worry.

그렇지 않습니다.

The moment kids start to lie is the moment storytelling begins.

아이들이 거짓말을 시작하는 순간은

스토리텔링의 시작입니다.

(웃음)

They are talking about things they didn't see.

보지 않은 것에 대해서 얘길하고 있는 거예요.

It's amazing. It's a wonderful moment.

놀라운 순간이에요. 경이로운 순간이에요.

Parents should celebrate.

부모들이 경축을 해야 됩니다. (웃음) (박수)

"Hurray! My boy finally started to lie!"

"야! 우리 애가... (환호) 우리 애가 드디어 거짓말을 시작했구나!"

All right! It calls for celebration.

야, 경축을 해야 됩니다.

For example, a kid says, "Mom, guess what? I met an alien on my way home."

예를 들면, "엄마 나 오늘 놀이방에서 오다가 외계인 만났다?"

Then a typical mom responds, "Stop that nonsense."

이러면 보통 엄마들은, "쓸데없는 소릴 하고 있어" 그러고 막 애를 괴롭히는데

Now, an ideal parent is someone who responds like this:

그러지 말고, 이상적인 부모는 이런 부모입니다.

"Really? An alien, huh? What did it look like? Did it say anything?

"그래? 외계인? 어떻게 생겼는데? 외계인이 뭐라 그러디?

Where did you meet it?" "Um, in front of the supermarket."

어디서 만났어?" "어, 슈퍼 앞에서."

When you have a conversation like this,

뭐 이런 얘기들을 아이랑 주고 받으면

the kid has to come up with the next thing to say to be responsible for what he started.

아이는 처음에 했던 말도 안되는 얘기를 책임지기 위해서

그 다음 말을 하게 되는 것이죠.

Soon, a story develops.

그리고 그 다음 말을 하게 되는 거고

Of course this is an infantile story,

스토리가 전개 되는 겁니다. 이것은 물론 유치한 그런 스토리지만

but thinking up one sentence after the next

한 문장에 의해서 다른 문장을 생각하고 다른 문장을 생각한다는 것은

is the same thing a professional writer like me does.

저같은 전문적인 작가의 일과 똑같은 일이에요, 사실은.

In essence, they are not different.

보통 본질적으로 다르지 않습니다.

Roland Barthes once said of Flaubert's novels,

롤랑 바르트가 플로베르의 소설에 대해서 이렇게 얘기를 했습니다.

"Flaubert did not write a novel.

"플로베르는 소설을 쓴 것이 아니라

He merely connected one sentence after another.

한 문장과 다른 문장을 연결했을 뿐이다."

The eros between sentences, that is the essence of Flaubert's novel."

그 문장과 문장 사이에 에로스

그것이 이제 플로베르 소설의 본질이다 라고 얘길 했는데

That's right -- a novel, basically, is writing one sentence,

그렇습니다. 소설은 기본적으로 앞의 한 문장을 쓴 다음에

then, without violating the scope of the first one,

그 다음, 그 문장을 위배하지 않는 범위 내에서

writing the next sentence.

그 다음 문장을 쓰는 것이죠.

And you continue to make connections.

이걸 계속해서 연결해 가는 겁니다.

Take a look at this sentence:

이 문장을 한번 보시죠.

"One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in his bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug."

네. 어디 문장인지 아시겠죠?

Yes, it's the first sentence of Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis."

네, 프란츠 카프카의 변신의 첫 문장인데

Writing such an unjustifiable sentence

저런 감당할 수 없는 문장을 써놓은 다음에 (웃음)

and continuing in order to justify it,

이 문장을 감당하기 위해서 써내려간 게 사실은

Kafka's work became the masterpiece of contemporary literature.

현대문학의 걸작인 프란츠 카프카의 변신입니다. 별거 아니예요.

Kafka did not show his work to his father.

이 문장을 썼는데, 아버지한테 보여드리지 않았죠.

He was not on good terms with his father.

프란츠 카프카는 아버지랑 사이가 좋지 않았습니다.

On his own, he wrote these sentences.

혼자 그 다음 문장을 써 내려 갔죠. 아버지한테 보여줬으면

Had he shown his father, "My boy has finally lost it," he would've thought.

아버지가, "얘가 드디어 미쳤구나."

And that's right. Art is about going a little nuts

그렇습니다. 예술은 어느 정도 미치는 거예요.

and justifying the next sentence,

그리고 그 다음 문장을 감당해 가는 건데

which is not much different from what a kid does.

이것은 아이가 하는 것과 크게 다르지 않은 그런 일입니다.

A kid who has just started to lie

거짓말을 시작한 아이

is taking the first step as a storyteller.

그는 스토리텔러로서의 첫 발을 내딛고 있습니다.

Kids do art.

이제 아이들은 예술을 합니다.

They don't get tired and they have fun doing it.

지칠줄 모르고 즐겁게 하죠.

I was in Jeju Island a few days ago.

제가 며칠 전에 제주도에 갔다 왔는데

When kids are on the beach, most of them love playing in the water.

아이들을 풀어놓으면, 이제 물에서 막 놀기도 하지만

대부분의 아이들이 물을 좋아하죠.

But some of them spend a lot of time in the sand,

근데 어떤 아이들은 모래사장에서 많은 시간을 보냅니다.

making mountains and seas -- well, not seas,

거기에서 산도 만들고 바다도, 바다는 아니죠.

but different things -- people and dogs, etc.

산을 만들고, 뭐.. 이것저것 사람도 만들고, 개도 만들고

But parents tell them,

부모들은 말려요.

"It will all be washed away by the waves."

"야 저거 파도가 오면 다 없어져."

In other words, it's useless.

다시 말해서 무용하다는 것이죠.

There's no need.

쓸데없는 짓이라는 건데

But kids don't mind.

아이들은 그런 건 상관하지 않아요.

They have fun in the moment

만드는 순간이 즐거워요.

and they keep playing in the sand.

계속 그것을 가지고 놀고 있습니다.

Kids don't do it because someone told them to.

아이들은 누가 시켜서 하는게 아니예요.

They aren't told by their boss

직장에서 상사가 시킨 것도 아니고

or anyone, they just do it.

누가 시킨 것도 없는데 합니다.

When you were little, I bet you spent time enjoying the pleasure of primitive art.

아마 여러분들도 어렸을 때

원초적인 예술의 즐거움을 느껴본 순간이 분명히 있었을 거예요.

When I ask my students to write about their happiest moment,

제가 학교에서 학생들한테

가장 행복했던 순간에 대해서 한번 써보라고 주면

many write about an early artistic experience they had as a kid.

많은 학생들이 어렸을 때 경험한

원초적인 예술적 경험에 대해서 얘길합니다.

Learning to play piano for the first time and playing four hands with a friend,

처음 피아노를 배워서 친구와 연탄곡을 치던 것.

or performing a ridiculous skit with friends looking like idiots -- things like that.

그 다음에, 말도 안되는 촌극을 친구와 같이 해서 바보가 됐던 경험, 뭐 이런 거.

Or the moment you developed the first film you shot with an old camera.

그 다음에 필름 카메라로 찍은 사진을 처음 인화하던 순간

They talk about these kinds of experiences.

이런 경험들에 대해서 얘기를 많이 합니다.

You must have had such a moment.

여러분도 그런 순간이 있을 거라고 생각하는데요.

In that moment, art makes you happy

이때까지는 예술이 행복해요.

because it's not work.

일이 아니기 때문입니다.

Work doesn't make you happy, does it? Mostly it's tough.

일은 행복하지 않죠? 대부분은 힘듭니다.

The French writer Michel Tournier has a famous saying.

프랑스의 작가 미쉘 뜨루니에가 명언을 남겼는데요.

It's a bit mischievous, actually.

좀 짓궂은 코멘트죠.

"Work is against human nature. The proof is that it makes us tired."

"일은 인간의 본성에 맞지 않는다.

하면 피곤해지는게 그 증거다." 그쵸? (웃음)

Right? Why would work tire us if it's in our nature?

본성에 맞으면 왜 피곤해요?

Playing doesn't tire us.

노는 건 피곤하지 않아요.

We can play all night long.

노는 건 밤새 놀 수 있어요.

If we work overnight, we should be paid for overtime.

일을 밤새 하면 잔업수당을 받아야죠.

Why? Because it's tiring and we feel fatigue.

왜? 힘드니까. 몸도 축나고요.

But kids, usually they do art for fun. It's playing.

아이들은 대체로 자기 즐거움을 위해서 예술을 합니다.

놀이로서 하는 거죠.

They don't draw to sell the work to a client

클라이언트에게 납품하기 위해서 그림을 그리거나

or play the piano to earn money for the family.

가족의 생계비를 벌기 위해서 피아노를 치는 것이 아닙니다.

Of course, there were kids who had to.

물론 그런 아이가 없었던 것은 아닙니다.

You know this gentleman, right?

이 분 아시죠?

He had to tour around Europe to support his family --

이 분은 가족의 생계비를 벌기 위해서 전 유럽으로 연주 여행을 떠났던

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart --

볼프강 아마데우스 모차르트인데

but that was centuries ago, so we can make him an exception.

이런 소년은 뭐 몇 백년 전 일이니까 예외로 합시다.

Unfortunately, at some point our art -- such a joyful pastime -- ends.

그러나 어느 순간부터 우리의 이런 예술, 이 행복한 놀이가 끝이 납니다.

Kids have to go to lessons, to school, do homework

아이들은 학원을 가야 되고, 학교를 가야 되고, 숙제를 해야 되고

and of course they take piano or ballet lessons,

물론 피아노 레슨, 발레 레슨 같은 걸 받긴 하지만

but they aren't fun anymore.

더 이상 재미가 없습니다.

You're told to do it and there's competition. How can it be fun?

해야 되고 경쟁이 개입하고, 재미 없죠?

If you're in elementary school and you still draw on the wall,

그런데 초등학생이 되서도 집에 벽에 색칠같은 걸 계속 하다가는

you'll surely get in trouble with your mom.

엄마한테 대단히 크게 야단을 맞게 될 겁니다.

Besides,

꼭 그런 것 뿐 아니더라도

if you continue to act like an artist as you get older,

나이가 들수록 예술가스럽게 행동하면

you'll increasingly feel pressure --

점점 누군가가 우리를 견제하고 있다는 생각이 점점 듭니다.

people will question your actions and ask you to act properly.

탄압을 하게 되고, 올바르게 행동할 것에 대해 자꾸 요구받게 됩니다.

Here's my story: I was an eighth grader and I entered a drawing contest at school in Gyeongbokgung.

제 사례를 하나 말씀드리면

중학교 2학년 때 학교에서 경복궁으로 사생 대회를 갔는데요.

I was trying my best, and my teacher came around

제 나름대로 열심히 그림을 그리고 있었어요.

and asked me, "What are you doing?"

그랬더니 선생님이 오셔가지고 "너 뭐, 지금 뭐 하고 있냐?" 그래서

"I'm drawing diligently," I said.

"열심히 그림을 그리고 있습니다."

"Why are you using only black?"

"그런데 왜 까만색만 쓰고 있어?"

Indeed, I was eagerly coloring the sketchbook in black.

그래서, 까만 색으로 책을 열심히 칠하고 있었어요.

And I explained,

그랬더니, 제가 이제 말씀 드렸죠.

"It's a dark night and a crow is perching on a branch."

"어두운 밤에 까마귀가 나무 위에 앉아 있다"고

Then my teacher said,

그랬더니 선생님이

"Really? Well, Young-ha, you may not be good at drawing but you have a talent for storytelling."

"어 그래 영하는 참, 그림에는 재능이 없지만

스토리텔러로서의 재능이 있구나?"

Or so I wished.

라고 말씀해주셨으면 얼마나 좋았겠습니까만

"Now you'll get it, you rascal!" was the response. (Laughter)

"이리 나와! 이 자식아!" 딱 그래 가지고 (웃음)

"You'll get it!" he said.

"이리 나와!" 딱 그래 가지고

You were supposed to draw the palace, the Gyeonghoeru, etc.,

지금 경복궁, 뭐 이런 경회루 이런 걸 그려야 되는데

but I was coloring everything in black,

혼자 까만색을 계속 칠하고 있으니까

so he dragged me out of the group.

저를 끌고 나가셨어요.

There were a lot of girls there as well,

거기 여중생들도 많이 와있었는데

so I was utterly mortified.

한마디로 개망신이었죠.

None of my explanations or excuses were heard,

저의 그런 어떤 해명, 설명 뭐 이런 것은 하나도 먹히지 않았고

and I really got it big time.

저는 아주 야단을 많이 맞았습니다.

If he was an ideal teacher, he would have responded like I said before,

이상적인 선생님이라면 제가 아까 첨에 말씀드린 것처럼 했겠죠.

"Young-ha may not have a talent for drawing,

저의 어떤, 그림의 재능은 없구나, 김영하란 애가

but he has a gift for making up stories," and he would have encouraged me.

하지만 얘가 좀 말을 지어내는 재주가 있구나 라고 해서

But such a teacher is seldom found.

격려를 해줬을텐데, 그런 선생님은 매우 드물죠.

Later, I grew up and went to Europe's galleries --

나중에 제가 이제 유럽의 현대 미술관에 철이 들어서

I was a university student -- and I thought this was really unfair.

대학생이 된 이후에 가 보니까

Look what I found. (Laughter)

억울하더라구요. 이런 그림들이 걸려있어요. (웃음) (박수)

Works like this were hung in Basel while I was punished

아니.. 이런 분들은 바젤 이런데 막 걸려있는데 말이죠.

and stood in front of the palace with my drawing in my mouth.

저는 왜 두들겨 맞고, 그림을 입에 물고 경복궁 앞에 서 있어야 했는지.

Look at this. Doesn't it look just like wallpaper?

이거 보세요. 이거 황토벽지 아닙니까? 이런 것들이죠.

Contemporary art, I later discovered, isn't explained by a lame story like mine.

그리고, 현대 미술이란게 나중에 알고 보니까

No crows are brought up.

물론 이 분들은 저처럼 까마귀 어쩌고 이런

촌스런 얘긴 하지 않았습니다.

Most of the works have no title, Untitled.

대부분 제목이 다 무제에요. 언타이틀 이런 건데.

Anyways, contemporary art in the 20th century

어쨌거나, 현대 미술이라는 것은, 20세기 현대 미술은

is about doing something weird and filling the void with explanation and interpretation --

이상한 짓을 하나 해놓고 나서

그 빈공간을 설명과 해석으로 채우는 작업이에요.

essentially the same as I did.

제가 했던 거랑 본질적으로 비슷해요.

Of course, my work was very amateur,

저는 뭐, 물론 아주 낮은 수준이지만

but let's turn to more famous examples.

예를 들면, 뭐 더 유명한 분을 보자면

This is Picasso's.

네. 이거는 파블로 피카소의 작품인데

He stuck handlebars into a bike seat and called it "Bull's Head." Sounds convincing, right?

자전거 안장에다가 핸들을 붙여놓고

황소 머리라고 말씀을 하셨는데, 그럴듯 하죠?

Next, a urinal was placed on its side and called "Fountain".

예, 그 다음에, 변기를 갖다 놓고 샘이다.

That was Duchamp.

레디메이드 샘이다 이렇게 말씀하셨던

So filling the gap between explanation and a weird act with stories --

뒤샹같은 예를 봐도, 이 설명과 이상한 짓의 간극을 메우는 것

that's indeed what contemporary art is all about.

스토리로 메운다는 것, 이런 것이 사실은 현대 미술이 했던 일인데

Picasso even made the statement,

피카소는 아예 말로도 남겼습니다.

"I draw not what I see but what I think."

"나는 내가 본 것을 그리는 것이 아니라 생각한 것을 그린다."

Yes, it means I didn't have to draw Gyeonghoeru.

네, 경회루 안 그려도 된다는 건데

I wish I knew what Picasso said back then. I could have argued better with my teacher.

이 말을 제가 중2 때 알았으면 선생님이랑 한번 해 봤을텐데.

Unfortunately, the little artists within us

불행하게도 우리 안에 어린 예술가들은

are choked to death before we get to fight against the oppressors of art.

우리가 예술의 압제자들과 맞서 싸우기 전에

이미 질식해서 죽어버립니다.

They get locked in.

이미 갇혀버려요.

That's our tragedy.

그게 우리의 비극입니다.

So what happens when little artists get locked in, banished or even killed?

이렇게 어린 예술가가 갇혀 있거나 추방되거나 죽어있으면

어떤 일이 벌어지는가?

Our artistic desire doesn't go away.

우리의 욕망이 사라지진 않아요.

We want to express, to reveal ourselves,

우리는 자기를 표현하고 싶고 자기를 드러내고 싶은데

but with the artist dead, the artistic desire reveals itself in dark form.

이렇게 됨으로써 자꾸, 다소 음습한 양상으로 예술적 욕망이 드러나게 되는데

In karaoke bars, there are always people who sing

노래방에 가서 꼭 이런 노래 부르는 분들 있어요.

"She's Gone" or "Hotel California,"

쉬즈곤(She's gone)이나 호텔 캘리포니아 이런 거

miming the guitar riffs.

하, 그 기타리프 같은 거 하면서

Usually they sound awful. Awful indeed.

대부분은 민폐죠. 민폔데

Some people turn into rockers like this.

그런 막 락커가 되는 분들이 계시죠.

Or some people dance in clubs.

아니면 무도장에서 스텝을 밟거나

People who would have enjoyed telling stories

또는 스토리텔링을 했으면 훨씬 즐거웠을 분들이

end up trolling on the Internet all night long.

밤새 악플을 단다거나 뭐 이런

That's how a writing talent reveals itself on the dark side.

음습한 방향으로 글쓰기가 나타나게 됩니다.

Sometimes we see dads get more excited than their kids

가끔 그래서 애들 노는거 봐주시다가

자기가 더 흥분하는 아빠들이 있어요.

playing with Legos or putting together plastic robots.

레고 블럭, 뭐 프라 모델 이런거 하다가 (웃음)

They go, "Don't touch it. Daddy will do it for you."

"가만 있어봐. 아빠가 할께" 이렇게 하고서는

The kid has already lost interest and is doing something else,

애는 벌써 흥미를 잃고 딴 데 갔는데

but the dad alone builds castles.

아빠 혼자 뭐 성도 만들고, 뭐 다 만들고 있어요.

This shows the artistic impulses inside us are suppressed, not gone.

이런 우리 마음속 예술적 충동이 억눌렸을 뿐 사라지지 않는다는 것인데

But they can often reveal themselves negatively, in the form of jealousy.

부정적인 방향으로도 나타납니다.

대체로 시기심으로 나타납니다.

You know the song "I would love to be on TV"? Why would we love it?

이 노래 있죠? "텔레비젼에 내가 나왔으면 정말 좋겠네." 왜 좋아요?

TV is full of people who do what we wished to do,

텔레비젼에는 우리가 되고 싶은, 우리가 하고 싶은

but never got to.

그러나 하지 못한 것들을 하는 사람들로 가득합니다.

They dance, they act -- and the more they do, they are praised.

노래하고 춤추고 연기하고 뿐만 아니라

그걸 하면 할수록 칭찬을 받아요.

So we start to envy them.

그래서 우리는 그들을 맹렬하게 질투하기 시작합니다.

We become dictators with a remote and start to criticize the people on TV.

그래서 리모콘을 든 독재자가 되서 욕을 하기 시작하죠.

"He just can't act." "You call that singing? She can't hit the notes."

"야 저게 연기냐? 발연기다.

뭐 저런, 저게 노래냐? 뭐, 노래도 못하는게 무슨 가수냐?"

We easily say these sorts of things.

뭐 이런 얘기들을 이제 하게 됩니다.

We get jealous, not because we're evil,

우리 마음 속에 시기심이란 것은, 우리가 사악해서가 아니라

but because we have little artists pent up inside us.

우리 마음 속에 이런 어린 예술가들이 갇혀있기 때문에

That's what I think.

나타나는 현상이다 라고 저는 이제 생각하는 것이죠.

What should we do then?

그렇다면 어떻게 해야 될 것이냐?

Yes, that's right.

네, 그렇습니다.

Right now, we need to start our own art.

지금 당장, 우리 자신의 예술을 시작하는 것이 필요합니다.

Right this minute, we can turn off TV,

당장 텔레비젼을 끄고

log off the Internet,

Where I teach students in drama school,

제가 연극원에서 학생들을 가르칠 때

there's a course called Dramatics.

제가 가르친 과목은 아니지만, 연극학이라는 과목이 있었어요.

In this course, all students must put on a play.

이 과목은, 연극원에 들어온 학생들 모두가 연극을 한 편 올려야 되요.

However, acting majors are not supposed to act.

단, 연기로 들어온 학생들은 연기를 해선 안돼요.

They can write the play, for example,

그 학생들은 예를 들면 극작을 한다거나

and the writers may work on stage art.

글을 잘 써서 들어온 학생들은 무대 미술을 한다거나

Likewise, stage art majors may become actors, and in this way you put on a show.

무대 미술을 하러 들어온 학생들은 연기를 한다거나 해서

Students at first wonder whether they can actually do it,

연극을 만드는 겁니다.

학생들이 처음에는 과연 내가 할 수 있을까 생각하지만

but later they have so much fun. I rarely see anyone who is miserable doing a play.

나중엔 너무너무 즐거워요.

연극 시켜가지고 싫어하는 사람들 거의 못 봤어요.

In school, the military or even in a mental institution, once you make people do it, they enjoy it.

학교, 군대, 심지어 정신병원에서도 아마 시키면 대단히 즐겁게 할 겁니다.

I saw this happen in the army -- many people had fun doing plays.

저는 군대에서도 봤고

여러 곳에서 연극을 하면서 즐거워하는 사람들을 봤어요.

I have another experience:

그 다음에, 제가 이런 경험도 있는데

In my writing class, I give students a special assignment.

글 쓰기 수업을 할 때, 학생들한테 이렇게 과제를 내줍니다.

I have students like you in the class -- many who don't major in writing.

이렇게 학생들이 모여있죠?

그런데 글을 쓰는, 글이 전공이 아닌 학생들도 많아요.

Some major in art or music and think they can't write.

미술하는 학생들, 음악하는 학생들, 많죠.

이 학생들은 글을 자기가 못 쓸 거라고 생각해요.

So I give them blank sheets of paper and a theme.

그래서 제가 백지를 나눠주고 주제를 하나 줍니다.

It can be a simple theme:

예를 들면, 주제는 뭐 간단한 거예요.

Write about the most unfortunate experience in your childhood.

어렸을 때 가장 불행했던 경험에 대해서 써라.

There's one condition: You must write like crazy. Like crazy!

대신에 미친 듯이 써야 되요.

미친듯이.

I walk around and encourage them,

제가 다니면서 독려합니다. 독려해서

"Come on, come on!" They have to write like crazy for an hour or two.

"빨리 써!" 이렇게. 미친듯이 두 시간이면 두 시간, 한 시간이면 한 시간 동안

They only get to think for the first five minutes.

처음에 한 5분 정도만 상을 가다듬고 써내려 가는 거예요.

The reason I make them write like crazy is because

제가 이렇게 미친듯이 글쓰기 수업을 시키는 이유는

when you write slowly and lots of thoughts cross your mind,

천천히 쓰면서 생각이 많아지면요.

the artistic devil creeps in.

우리 마음속에 예술가의 악마가 나타납니다.

This devil will tell you hundreds of reasons

이 악마는 글을 쓸 수 없게 만드는 수백 가지 이유

why you can't write:

네가 글을 쓸 수 없는 수백 가지 이유들을 얘기하면서

"People will laugh at you. This is not good writing!

"남들이 너를 비웃을 거야. 이건 글이 아니야!

What kind of sentence is this? Look at your handwriting!"

이게 문장이냐? 글씨를 봐라!"

It will say a lot of things.

뭐 여러가지 말들을 합니다.

You have to run fast so the devil can't catch up.

이 악마가 따라오지 못하게 빨리 달려야 되요.

The really good writing I've seen in my class

제가 한예종에서 봤던 정말 좋은 글들은

was not from the assignments with a long deadline,

시간을 충분히 준 과제에서 본 게 아니라

but from the 40- to 60-minute crazy writing students did

학생들이 그렇게 40분 동안, 한 시간 동안 앉아서

in front of me with a pencil.

제 앞에서 연필로 쓴 글들에서 발견했던 거예요.

The students go into a kind of trance.

그 학생들이 어떤 몰아지경에 빠져요.

After 30 or 40 minutes, they write without knowing what they're writing.

나중에 30분 40분 되면은 뭘 쓰는지도 모르고 막 씁니다.

And in this moment, the nagging devil disappears.

그러나 그 순간에는 우리를 방해하는 악마가 나타나지 않죠.

So I can say this:

그래서 이렇게 말할 수 있습니다.

It's not the hundreds of reasons why one can't be an artist,

예술가가 될 수 없는 수백 가지의 이유가 아니라

but rather, the one reason one must be that makes us artists.

되야만 하는 자기만의 단 한 가지 이유가 한 사람을 예술가로 만드는 거예요.

Why we cannot be something is not important.

될 수 없는 이유는 중요하지 않아요.

Most artists became artists because of the one reason.

대부분의 예술가가 그렇게 해서 예술가가 된 겁니다.

When we put the devil in our heart to sleep and start our own art,

이제 우리가 마음속의 악마를 잠재우고 자기 예술을 시작하려고 할 때

enemies appear on the outside.

이제 적들이 바깥에서 나타나기 시작합니다.

Mostly, they have the faces of our parents. (Laughter)

대부분 부모님의 얼굴을 하고 있을 때가 많아요. (웃음)

Sometimes they look like our spouses,

그 다음에 배우자의 얼굴을 하고 있을 때도 있지만

but they are not your parents or spouses.

그들은 여러분의 부모나 배우자가 아니예요.

They are devils. Devils.

악마에요. (웃음)

악마입니다.

They came to Earth briefly transformed

잠시 변신해서 우리 지구에 내려와서

to stop you from being artistic, from becoming artists.

여러분의 예술가 행을, 예술가가 되려는 걸 막고있는 사람들인데

And they have a magic question.

이 분들에게는 마법의 질문이 있어요.

When we say, "I think I'll try acting. There's a drama school in the community center," or

그게 뭐냐 하면, 우리가 "나 연극을 좀 해볼까봐

구청에서 하는 연극 무슨 학교가 있는데 가볼까봐" 라든가

"I'd like to learn Italian songs," they ask, "Oh, yeah? A play? What for?"

"이태리 가곡을 배울까봐." 그러면

"어 그래? 연극? 그거 해서 뭐할려고 그래?"

The magic question is, "What for?"

마법의 질문이에요.

"그거 해서 뭐할려고 그래?" 이렇게 물어봅니다. (웃음)

But art is not for anything.

그런데, 예술이라는 것은 뭘 해서 뭘 하려는게 아니죠.

Art is the ultimate goal.

예술은 최종의 궁극적인 목적입니다.

It saves our souls and makes us live happily.

그것은 우리 영혼을 구원하고

우리가 즐겁게 살 수 있도록 만들어주는 거예요.

It helps us express ourselves and be happy without the help of alcohol or drugs.

술과 약물의 도움없이 행복하게 살 수 있도록

자기 표현을 하도록 도와주는 것이죠.

So in response to such a pragmatic question,

그래서 이런 질문에 대해서, 이런 실용주의자들의 질문에 대해서

we need to be bold.

우리는 담대하게 대할 필요가 있습니다.

"Well, just for the fun of it. Sorry for having fun without you,"

"그냥 즐거워서 하는거야, 재밌어서 하는 거야.

미안해, 나만 재밌어서.

is what you should say. "I'll just go ahead and do it anyway."

내가 좀 먼저 할께" 라고 얘기를 할 수 있는 사람이 되야 된다는 겁니다.

The ideal future I imagine is where we all have multiple identities,

제가 이상적으로 생각하는 미래는

우리 모두가 어떤 다중의 정체성을 갖는 것인데

at least one of which is an artist.

이 정체성 중에 하나만이라도 예술가가 되는 거예요.

Once I was in New York and got in a cab. I took the backseat,

제가 뉴욕에 갔는데 택시를 탔어요.

택시 이제 뒷 좌석에 타죠.

and in front of me I saw something related to a play.

타면 이 앞에 붙어있는데, 연극 뭐 관련한 게 붙어있어요 .

So I asked the driver, "What is this?"

그래서 "이게 뭐냐?" 그랬더니

He said it was his profile. "Then what are you?" I asked. "An actor," he said.

자기 프로필이래요.

"당신 그럼 뭐냐?" 그랬더니 연극배우래요.

He was a cabby and an actor. I asked, "What roles do you usually play?"

택시기사지만 연극을 해요.

그래서 "무슨 배역을 주로 하냐?" 그랬더니

He proudly said he played King Lear.

자랑스럽게 자기는 리어왕을 한대요.

King Lear.

오, 리어왕.

"Who is it that can tell me who I am?" -- a great line from King Lear.

"내가 누구인지 말할 수 있는 자는 누구인가?"

That's the world I dream of.

리어왕의 멋진 대사죠?

바로 그런 세상이 제가 꿈꾸는 세상이에요.

Someone is a golfer by day and writer by night.

이 사람이 낮에는 골프 선수이면서 밤에는 작가이고

Or a cabby and an actor, a banker and a painter,

택시 기사이면서 연극 배우이고, 은행원이면서 화가

secretly or publicly performing their own arts.

그러면서 은밀하게 또는 공개적으로

우리가 우리의 예술을 해 나가는 것이죠.

In 1990, Martha Graham, the legend of modern dance, came to Korea.

1990년에 현대 무용의 전설적인 거장인 마사 그레엄이 한국에 왔어요.

The great artist, then in her 90s, arrived at Gimpo Airport

김포공항에 휠체어를 타고

이 90이 넘은 이 거장이 입국하는 장면을 봤는데

and a reporter asked her a typical question:

기자가 물어 봤어요.

기자들은 보통 이제 그런 질문들을 많이 하죠.

"What do you have to do to become a great dancer?

"무용을 잘 할려면 어떻게 해야 될까요?"

Any advice for aspiring Korean dancers?"

(웃음)

"한국의 무용학도들에게 한 말씀 해주시죠?"

Now, she was the master. This photo was taken in 1948 and she was already a celebrated artist.

예, 거장인데. 이게 48년도에 찍은 사진인데 벌써 이때도 이미 거장이셨는데

In 1990, she was asked this question.

90년에 그렇게 물어봤던 겁니다.

And here's what she answered:

자. 그랬더니 이분이 이렇게 말씀하셨어요.

"Just do it."

"JUST DO IT"

(웃음)

Wow. I was touched.

야... 감동적이었어요.

Only those three words and she left the airport. That's it.

그 딱 세 단어를 얘기하고는 바로 입국장을 나가셨는데

So what should we do now?

자, 그렇습니다. 지금 우리에게 필요한 것은 무엇일까?

Let's be artists, right now. Right away. How?

예술가가 되자, 당장. 지금 당장입니다. 어떻게?

Just do it!

JUST DO IT 입니다.
