I want to talk today about how reading can change our lives

I want to talk to you about how reading can give us a shareable world

The writer who changed my life

When I was growing up in Western Michigan in the 1980s,

there weren't many Asian American writers interested in social change.

I also felt challenged and indicted by his words.

I took those words very literally.

Where should I put myself?

I went to the Mississippi Delta,

one of the poorest regions in the United States.

This is a place shaped by a powerful history.

In the 1960s, African Americans risked their lives to fight for education,

I wanted to be a part of that change,

When I got to the Mississippi Delta,

This is the school where I met Patrick.

Patrick had just one problem.

He wouldn't come to school.

He said that sometimes school was just too depressing

because people were always fighting and teachers were quitting.

And because I was crazy and 22 and zealously optimistic,

And he started to flourish in my class.

Around the same time

I got into law school at Harvard.

I once again faced this question, where should I put myself,

those people leave.

And the people who stay behind

are the people who don't have the chance to leave.

I didn't want to be a person who left.

ကျွန်မက ထွက်သွားသူ မဖြစ်ချင်ခဲ့ဘူး။

I wanted to be a person who stayed.

ဆက်နေတဲ့ လူတစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်ချင်ခဲ့တယ်။

On the other hand, I was lonely and tired.

တစ်ဘက်မှာကျတော့ ကျွန်မဟာ အထီးကျန်ပြီး ပင်ပန်းနေတယ်။

And so I convinced myself that I could do more change

on a larger scale if I had a prestigious law degree.

So I left.

I asked him what had happened with school

and he said that he had dropped out the year after I left.

And then he wanted to tell me something else.

He looked down and he said that he had had a baby daughter

And he felt like he had let her down.

I went back to see Patrick,

I went back to see if I could help him with his legal case.

And I handed him a pen and a piece of paper,

I didn't recognize his handwriting,

And I thought to myself that as a teacher,

I knew that a student could dramatically improve

in a very quick amount of time,

but I never thought that a student could dramatically regress.

What even pained me more,

was seeing what he had written to his daughter.

And this was all he felt he had to say to her.

And I asked myself how can I convince him that he has more to say,

parts of himself that he doesn't need to apologize for.

I wanted him to feel

သူ့မှာ သူ့သမီးနဲ့မျှဝေဖို့

that he had something worthwhile to share with his daughter.

For every day the next seven months,

I visited him and brought books.

My tote bag became a little library.

we would sit for hours in silence, both of us reading.

We started by reading haikus, hundreds of haikus,

a deceptively simple masterpiece.

And I would ask him, "Share with me your favorite haikus."

ကျွန်မ မေးတာက "မင်းအကြိုက်ဆုံး ဟိုက္ကူကို ငါနဲ့ မျှဝေဦး။"

And some of them are quite funny.

တစ်ချို့ဟာတွေကတော့ အတော့ကို ရယ်စရာပါ။

So there's this by Issa:

ဒီတော့ ဒါက Issa ရဲ့ လက်ရာပါ။

"Don't worry, spiders, I keep house casually."

" မပူနဲ့ ပင့်ကူတို့ ငါ အိမ်ကိုစောင့်တာ သာမန်ကာလျှံကာ"

And this: "Napped half the day, no one punished me!"

ဒါက "နေ့ဝက် တစ်မှေးအိပ်၊ ဘယ်သူမှ ငါ့ကို ဒဏ်မပေး"

And this gorgeous one, which is about the first day of snow falling,

ဒီထူးကဲတဲ့တစ်ပုဒ်ကတော့ ပထမဆုံး နှင်းကျတဲ့အကြောင်းပါ။

"Deer licking first frost from each other's coats."

There's something mysterious and gorgeous

ကဗျာတစ်ပုဒ် ပုံပန်းကကို လျှို့ဝှက်ဆန်းကျယ်ပြီး

just about the way a poem looks.

The empty space is as important as the words themselves.

စကားလုံးတွေကိုယ်၌လိုပဲ နေရာလပ်ဟာ အရေးပါပါတယ်။

We read this poem by W.S. Merwin,

which he wrote after he saw his wife working in the garden

and realized that they would spend the rest of their lives together.

The worn griefs will have eased like the early cloud

through which morning slowly comes to itself"

ဒီကနေ မနက်ခင်းဟာ ဖြည်းဖြည်းချင်း ဖြစ်တည်လာ"

I asked Patrick what his favorite line was, and he said,

သူ့အကြိုက်ဆုံးစာကြောင်းက ဘာလံလို့ Patrick ကို ကျွန်မမေးတော့

"We will be no older than we ever were."

He said it reminded him of a place where time just stops,

where time doesn't matter anymore.

And I asked him if he had a place like that,

where time lasts forever.

And he said, "My mother."

When you read a poem alongside someone else,

ကဗျာတစ်ပုဒ်ကို အခြားသူ တစ်ယောက်နဲ့ အတူယှဉ်ပြီးဖတ်တဲ့အခါ

the poem changes in meaning.

ကဗျာက အဓိပ္ပါယ်ပြောင်းသွားတယ်။

Because it becomes personal to that person, becomes personal to you.

အကြောင်းက ဒီကဗျာက အဲဒီလူ ကိုယ်ပိုင် ဖြစ်လာလို့၊သင့် ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဖြစ်လာလို့ပါ။

We then read books, we read so many books,

ဒီနောက်၊ စာအုပ်တွေအများကြီး ကျွန်မတို့ဖတ်ကြတယ်။

we read the memoir of Frederick Douglass,

Frederick Douglass ရဲ့ ဘဝမှတ်တမ်းကို ကျွန်မတို့ဖတ်တယ်၊

an American slave who taught himself to read and write

စာရေး၊စာဖတ်ကို သူ့ဘာသာ သင်ခဲ့တဲ့ အမေရိကန် ကျွန်တစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်ပြီး

and who escaped to freedom because of his literacy.

သူ့ရဲ့စာတတ်မှုကြောင့် လွတ်မြောက်ခဲ့သူပါ။

I had grown up thinking of Frederick Douglass as a hero

Frederick Douglass ကို သူရဲကောင်း လို့တွေးရင်း ကြီးပြင်းကာ

and I thought of this story as one of uplift and hope.

But this book put Patrick in a kind of panic.

He fixated on a story Douglass told of how, over Christmas,

Patrick said he related to this.

He said that there are people in jail who, like slaves,

His favorite line was this line:

It was this everlasting thinking of my condition that tormented me."

Patrick said that Douglass was brave to write, to keep thinking.

Douglass ဟာ ရေးဖို့၊ ဆက်တွေးဖို့ သတ္တိရှိတယ်လို့ Patrick က ပြောတယ်။

But Patrick would never know how much he seemed like Douglass to me.

How he kept reading, even though it put him in a panic.

He loved this line:

Something about this language, its love, its longing, its voice,

rekindled Patrick's desire to write.

with perfectly clear water.

As I watched Patrick write,

Patrick ရေးတာ စောင့်ကြည့်ရင်း

I thought to myself,

ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ တွေးမိပြီး

and I now ask all of you,

how many of you have written a letter to somebody you feel you have let down?

It is just much easier to put those people out of your mind.

But Patrick showed up every day, facing his daughter,

Because that risk reveals the strength of one's heart.

Let me take a step back and just ask an uncomfortable question.

ကျွန်မ နောက်တစ်လှမ်းဆုတ်ပြီး ကသိကအောက်ဖြစ်တဲ့ မေးခွန်းတစ်ခု မေးပါရစေ။

Who am I to tell this story, as in this Patrick story?

ဒီ Patrick ဇာတ်လမ်းထဲကလို ကျွန်မ ဘယ်သူ့ကို ဒီဇာတ်လမ်းပြောရမှာလဲ။

Patrick's the one who lived with this pain

Patrick ဟာ ဒီနာကျင်မှုနဲ့ ရှင်သန်ခဲ့သူ တစ်ယောက်ဖြစ်ပြီး

and I have never been hungry a day in my life.

I thought about this question a lot,

but what I want to say is that this story is not just about Patrick.

It's about us,

it's about the inequality between us.

The world of plenty

Patrick နဲ့ သူ့မိဘတွေ၊

that Patrick and his parents and his grandparents

သူ့ဘိုးဘွားတွေ ပိတ်ဆို့ခံထားရတဲ့

have been shut out of.

အလျှံပယ်မှုရဲ့ကမ္ဘာပါ။

In this story, I represent that world of plenty.

ဒီဇာတ်လမ်းမှာ ကျွန်မဟာ ဒီအလျှံပယ်မှုရဲ့ လောကကို ကိုယ်စားပြုတယ်၊

And in telling this story, I didn't want to hide myself.

ဒီဇာတ်လမ်းကို ပြောရာမှာ ကျွန်မကိုယ် ကျွန်မ ဖုံးကွယ်မထားချင်ဘူး။

Hide the power that I do have.

ကျွန်မမှာ တကယ်ရှိတဲ့အစွမ်းကို ဖုံးတာပါ။

In telling this story, I wanted to expose that power

and then to ask,

how do we diminish the distance between us?

Reading is one way to close that distance.

စာဖတ်ခြင်းဟာ အကွာအဝေးကို နီးလာဖို့ နည်းလမ်းတစ်ခုပါ။

It gives us a quiet universe that we can share together,

that we can share in equally.

You're probably wondering now what happened to Patrick.

Did reading save his life?

It did and it didn't.

When Patrick got out of prison,

his journey was excruciating.

So people say a lot of things about reading that feel exaggerated to me.

Being literate didn't stop him form being discriminated against.

စာဖတ်တတ်တာက ခွဲခြားဆက်ဆံ ခံရတာကနေ သူ့ကို မတားဆီးပေးခဲ့ဘူး။

It didn't stop his mother from dying.

သူ့အမေကို သေရာကနေ မတားဆီးပေးခဲ့ဘူး။

So what can reading do?

I have a few answers to end with today.

ဒီနေ့နဲ့ အဆုံးသတ်ဖို့ ကျွန်မမှာ အဖြေအနည်းငယ်ရှိတယ်။

Reading charged his inner life

စာဖတ်ခြင်းက သူ့ရဲ့သိုဝှက်ထားတဲ့ ဘဝကို

with mystery, with imagination,

ဆန်းကျယ်မှုနဲ့၊ စိတ်ကူးနဲ့၊ လှပမှုနဲ့

with beauty.

ပြောင်းလဲပေးခဲ့တယ်။

Reading gave him images that gave him joy:

စာဖတ်ခြင်းက သူကို ပျော်ရွှင်မှုပေးခဲ့တဲ့ ပုံရိပ်တွေ သူ့ကိုပေးခဲ့တယ်၊

mountain, ocean, deer, frost.

တောင်၊ သမုဒ္ဒရာ၊ သမင်၊ နှင်းခဲတို့ပါ။

Words that taste of a free, natural world.

လွတ်လပ်တဲ့ သဘာဝလောက တစ်ခုရဲ့ အရသာပေးတဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေပါ။

Reading gave him a language for what he had lost.

စာဖတ်ခြင်းက သူဆုံးရှုံးခဲ့တာအတွက် ဘာသာစကားတစ်ခု သူ့ကို ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

How precious are these lines from the poet Derek Walcott?

ကဗျာဆရာ Derek Walcott ရဲ့ ဒီစာကြောင်း တွေဟာ ဘယ်လောက်အဖိုးတန်လိုက်သလဲ။

Patrick memorized this poem.

even though it was painful.

He kept being conscious, even though being conscious hurts.

Reading is a form of thinking,

that's why it's difficult to read because we have to think.

we begin to find the words.

And he found the words to imagine the two of them together.

He found the words

ဘယ်လောက်ချစ်တာ ပြောပြဖို့

to tell her how much he loved her.

စကားလုံးတွေ တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

Reading also changed our relationship with each other.

စာဖတ်ခြင်းဟာကျွန်မတို့ တစ်ဦးနဲ့တစ်ဦးရဲ့ ဆက်ဆံရေးကိုလည်း ပြောင်းလဲစေတယ်။

It gave us an occasion for intimacy,

ဒါက ကျွန်မတို့ သဘောထား တွေကို ကျော်မြင်ဖို့

to see beyond our points of view.

ရင်းနှီးမှုအတွက် အခွင့်တစ်ခု ကျွန်မတို့ကို ပေးခဲ့တယ်။

And reading took an unequal relationship

and gave us a momentary equality.

There is no way you can know what his favorite line will be.

What memories and private griefs he has.

ဘယ် သတိရမှုတွေ၊ ကိုယ်ရေးကိုယ်တာ သောကတွေ သူမှာရှိတာကိုပေါ့။

And you face the ultimate privacy of his inner life.

သူ့ရဲ့ သိုဝှက်ထားတဲ့ဘဝရဲ့ အဆုံးစွန် သီးသန့်ဖြစ်တည်မှုကို သင် ရင်ဆိုင်ရတယ်။

And then you start to wonder, "Well, what is my inner life made of?

What do I have that's worthwhile to share with another?"

on some of my favorite lines from Patrick's letters to his daughter.

"The river is shadowy in some places

"မြစ်ဟာ တစ်ချို့နေရာတွေမှာ အရိပ်ထိုးနေပေမဲ့

but the light shines through the cracks of trees ...

သစ်ပင်တွေရဲ့ ဟကြောင်းတွေကနေ အလင်းရောင် ထိုးကျနေတယ်။

On some branches hang plenty of mulberries.

တစ်ချို့သစ်ကိုင်းတွေပေါ်မှာ ပိုးစာသီးတွေ အများကြီး တွဲကျနေတယ်။

You stretch your arm straight out to grab some."

တစ်ချိုကို ဆွတ်ယူဖို့ သင့်လက်မောင်းကို သင် ဆန့်ထုတ်လိုက်တယ်။"

And this lovely letter, where he writes,

ဒီချစ်စရာ စာမှာ သူရေးတာက

"Close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the words.

"သင့်မျက်လုံးတွေကို မှိတ်ပြီး စကားလုံးတွေရဲ့ အသံတွေကို နားထောင်ပါ။

I know this poem by heart

ကျွန်မ ဒီကဗျာကို အလွတ်ရတယ်၊

and I would like you to know it, too."

သင်တို့ကိုလည်း သိစေချင်ပါတယ်။"
