There was a long and awkward silence,

These were the kinds of roles that existed for someone like me.

Because whenever I did try to get a role that wasn't a poorly written stereotype,

I kept receiving the same message again and again and again.

That my identity was an obstacle I had to overcome.

ဒါကို ကျွန်မတို့ ငြင်းလို့မရဘူး၊ ရှိနေခြင်းဟာ ဖြစ်နိုင်ခြေကို ဖန်တီးတယ်။

But for the last 17 years,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ ၁၂ နှစ်လုံးလုံး

I've also heard the same excuses

ဒီဆင်ခြေတွေလည်း ကျွန်မ ကြားခဲ့တယ်၊

for why some of us can access presence in the culture

ဘာကြောင့် ကျွန်မတို့တစ်ချို့က ယဉ်ကျေးမှု ထဲက တည်ရှိခွင့်ရနိုင်ပြီး

and some of us can't.

တစ်ချို့က မရနိုင်တာအတွက်လေ။

Our stories don't have an audience,

ကျွန်မတို့ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေက ပရိတ်သတ်မရှိ၊

our experiences won't resonate in the mainstream,

ကျွန်မတို့အတွေ့အကြုံတွေက ပင်မစီးကြောင်းထဲမှာ ဟိန်းမနေဘူး၊

our voices are too big a financial risk.

ကျွန်မတို့အသံတွေဟာ ကြီးမားလွန်းတဲ့ ငွေရေးကြေးရေး စွန့်စားမှုတစ်ခုပါ။

Just a few years ago, my agent called

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ နှစ်အနည်းငယ်ကပဲ ကျွန်မ ကိုယ်စားလှယ်က

to explain to me why I wasn't getting a role in a movie.

ဘာကြောင့် ကျွန်မ ရုပ်ရှင်မှာ နေရာတော ရှင်းပြဖို့ ဖုန်းဆက်တယ်။

He said, "They loved you

သူပြောတာက "သူတို့ မင်းကို သဘောကျတယ်၊

and they really, really do want to cast diversely,

တကယ်ပဲ မင်းကို အမျိုးမျိုးမှာ သရုပ်ဆောင်စေချင်ပေမဲ့

but the movie isn't financeable until they cast the white role first."

ရုပ်ရှင်က လူဖြူသရုပ်ဆောင်ကို အရင်ရိုက်မှ ငွေကြေးရနိုင်တာလေ။"

He delivered the message with a broken heart

ဒီသတင်းစကားကို ဝမ်းနည်းပက်လက်နဲ့ ပြောခဲ့ပြီး

and with a tone that communicated, "I understand how messed up this is."

ဆက်သွယ်မှုရှိတဲ့လေသံနဲ့က "ဒါ ဘယ်လို အရှုပ်ထုပ်ဆိုတာ ငါနားလည်တယ်"တဲ့

But nonetheless, just like hundreds of times before,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဘာဖြစ်ဖြစ်၊ ဒါမျိုးက အရင်က အကြိမ်ရာချီပါတယ်။

I felt the tears roll down my face.

မျက်နှာမှာ မျက်ရည်တွေစီကျတာ သိလိုက်တယ်။

And the pang of rejection rise up in me

ပယ်ချခြင်းရဲ့ စူးရှရှဝေဒနာက ကျွန်မဆီမှာ မြင့်တက်လာယ်၊

and then the voice of shame scolding me,

ဒီနောက်မှာ အရှက်ရမှုရဲ့ အသံက ကျွန်မကို ဆူနေတယ်။

"You are a grown woman, stop crying over a job."

"နင်ဟာ ရင့်ကျက်တဲ့ မိန်းမတစ်ယောက်လေ၊ အလုပ်တစ်ခုအတွက် ငိုတာရပ်လိုက်စမ်း။"

I went through this process for years of accepting the failure as my own

ကျရှုံးမှုကို ကိုယ်ပိုင်အဖြစ်လက်ခံတာ၊ အခက်အခဲတွေကို မကျော်လွှားနိုင်ဘူးဆိုတဲ့

and then feeling deep shame that I couldn't overcome the obstacles.

နက်ရှိုင်းတဲ့ ရှက်စိတ် ဒီဖြစ်စဉ်ကို နှစ်တွေချီ ဖြတ်သန်းခဲ့တယ်၊

But this time, I heard a new voice.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒီတစ်ခါ အသံသစ်တစ်သံကြားတယ်။

A voice that said, "I'm tired.

အသံတစ်ခုက ပြေတာက "ငါ ပင်ပန်းတယ်၊

I've had enough."

ငါ စိတ်ကုန်နေပြီ"တဲ့။

A voice that understood

ကျွန်မရဲ့မျက်ရည်တွေနဲ နာကျင်မှုဟာ

my tears and my pain were not about losing a job.

အလုပ် ဆုံးရှုံးတာနဲ့ မဆိုင်ဘူးဆိုတာ နာလည်တဲ့ အသံတစ်ခုပါ။

They were about what was actually being said about me.

ဒါတွေဟာ တကယ်တော့ ကျွန်မအကြောင်း ကျွန်မပြောနေတာနဲ့ ဆိုင်တာပါ။

What had been said about me my whole life

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဘဝတစ်ခုလုံးအကြောင်းပြောခဲ့တာက

by executives and producers

အလုပ်အမှုဆောင်တွေ၊ ထုတ်လုပ်သူတွေ၊

and directors and writers and agents and managers

ဒါရိုက်တာတွေ၊ စာရေးဆရာတွေ၊ ကိုယ်စားလှယ်တွေ၊ မန်နေဂျာတွေ၊

and teachers and friends and family.

ဆရာဆရာမတွေ၊ မိတ်ဆွေတွေနဲ့ မိသားစုပါ။

That I was a person of less value.

ကျွန်မဟာ တန်ဖိုးသိပ်မရှိတဲ့လူပေါ့။

I thought sunscreen and straightening irons

နေရောင်ခံလိမ်းဆေးနဲ့ ဆံပင်ဖြောင့်တံတွေက

would bring about change in this deeply entrenched value system.

နက်ရှိုင်းစွာအမြစ်တွယ်နေတဲ့ တန်ဖိုးစနစ်မှာ အပြောင်းအလဲ ဖြစ်ပေါ်စေမှာလား တွေးမိတယ်။

But what I realized in that moment

ဒါပေမဲ့ အဲဒီအချိန်မှာ ကျွန်မ နားလည်လိုက်တာက

was that I was never actually asking the system to change.

ကျွန်မဟာ တကယ်က စနစ်ကို ပြောင်းဖို့ တောင်းဆိုနေတာမဟုတ်တာပါ။

I was asking it to let me in, and those aren't the same thing.

ကျွန်မ တောင်းဆိုနေတာက ကျွန်မကို ခွင့်ပြုပေးဖို့နဲ့ ဒါတွေဟာ မတူဘူးဆိုတာပါ။

I couldn't change what a system believed about me,

ကျွန်မကို ယုံကြည်တဲ့ စနစ်တစ်ခုကို ကျွန်မ မပြောင်းနိုင်ပေမဲ့

while I believed what the system believed about me.

ကျွန်မကိုယုံကြည်တဲ့ စနစ်ကို ကျွန်မ ယုံကြည်တယ်။

And I did.

ကျွန်မ ယုံကြည်ခဲ့တယ်။

I, like everyone around me,

ကျွန်မအနားက လူတိုင်းလိုပဲ

believed that it wasn't possible for me to exist in my dream as I was.

ကျွန်မအတွက် မက်ခဲ့သလို အိပ်မက်ထဲမှာ တည်ရှိဖို့ မဖြစ်နိုင်ဘူးလို့ယုံကြည်ခဲ့တယ်။

And I went about trying to make myself invisible.

ကျွန်မကိုယ်ကျွန်မ ပျောက်သွားအောင် လျှောက်လုပ်နေခဲ့တယ်။

What this revealed to me was that it is possible

ဒါက ကျွန်မကို ဖွင့်ဟပြတာ အပြောင်းအလဲကို

to be the person who genuinely wants to see change

အစစ်အမှန် မြင်ချင်တဲ့လူဖြစ်နိုင်ပေမဲ့

while also being the person whose actions keep things the way they are.

အကြောင်းတရားတွေကို အရှိအတိုင်း တားတဲ့ လုပ်ရပ်တွေနဲ့ လူလည်းဖြစ်နေတာပါ။

And what it's led me to believe is that change isn't going to come

ဒါက ကျွန်မကို ယုံကြည်စေတာက အပြောင်းအလဲဟာ လူကောင်း လူဆိုး

by identifying the good guys and the bad guys.

ခွဲခြားခြင်းကနေ လာမှာမဟုတ်ဘူးဆိုတာပါ။

That conversation lets us all off the hook.

ဒီဆွေးနွေးပွဲက ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံးကို အသက်ရှူပေါက်ရခဲ့တယ်။

Because most of us are neither one of those.

အကြောင်းက ကျွန်မတို့အများစုဟာ ဒါတစ်ခုမှ မဟုတ်လို့ပါ။

Change will come

အပြောင်းအလဲ ဖြစ်လာာမှာက

when each of us has the courage

တစ်ဦးချင်းစီမှာ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ပိုင် အခြေခံ

to question our own fundamental values and beliefs.

တန်ဖိုးထားမှုတွေ၊ယုံကြည်ချက်တွေကို မေးခွန်းထုတ်ဖို့ သတ္တိရှိလာတဲ့အခါမှာပါ။

And then see to it that our actions lead to our best intentions.

ဒီနောက် လုပ်ရပ်တွေက အကောင်းဆုံး ရည်ရွယ်ချက်တွေကို ဦးတည်စေတာ မြင်ပါ။

I am just one of millions of people

ကျွန်မရဲ့အိပ်မက်တွေ ဖြည့်ဆည်းဖို့၊

who have been told that in order to fulfill my dreams,

ကျွန်မပင်ကိုအစွမ်းတွေ ကမ္ဘာကို ပေး​ေဝးဖို့ ကျွန်မ ဘယ်သူဆိုတာရဲ့ အမှန်တရားကို

in order to contribute my talents to the world

ခုခံဖို့လိုတယ်လို့ ညွှန်ပြခံထားရတဲ့

I have to resist the truth of who I am.

လူတစ်သန်းထဲက တစ်ယောက်ပါပဲ။

I for one, am ready to stop resisting

ကျွန်မအနေနဲ့ ခုခံခြင်းကို ရပ်တန့်ပြီး

and to start existing as my full and authentic self.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ပြည့်ဝ၊စစ်မှန်တဲ့ အတ္တအဖြစ် စတင် တည်ရှိဖို့ အဆင်သင့်ပါ။

If I could go back and say anything

သီးသန့်အခန်းထဲမှာ ကခုန်နေတဲ့၊ သူ့အိပ်မက်တွေ မက်နေတဲ့

to that nine-year-old, dancing in the den, dreaming her dreams,

အဲဒီကိုးနှစ်သမီးလေးဆီကို ပြန်သွားပြီး တစ်ခုခုပြောလို့ ရနိုင်မယ်ဆိုရင်

I would say,

ကျွန်မ ပြောမှာက

my identity is not my obstacle.

ကျွန်မ ကိုယ်ပိုင်လက္ခဏာက အတားအဆီး မဟုတ်ပါ။

My identity is my superpower.

ကျွန်မ ကိုယ်ပိုင်လက္ခဏာက မဟာ စွမ်းအားပါ၊

Because the truth is,

ဘာကြောင့်လဲဆိုတော့ အမှန်တရားက

I am what the world looks like.

ကျွန်မဟာ ကမ္ဘာကြီးက အသွင်ဆောင်မယ့်အရာပါ။

You are what the world looks like.

သင်တို့ဟာ ကမ္ဘာကြီးက အသွင်ဆောင်မယ့်အရာပါ။

Collectively, we are what the world actually looks like.

စုပေါင်းအနေနဲ့ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ ကမ္ဘာကြီးက အသွင်ဆောင်မယ့်အရာပါ။

And in order for our systems to reflect that,

ကျွန်မတို့ စနစ်တွေက ဒါကို ရောင်ပြန်ဟပ်ဖို့

they don't have to create a new reality.

သူတို့အနေနဲ့ ဖြစ်တည်မှု အသစ်တစ်ခု ဖန်တီးဖို့မလိုဘူး။

They just have to stop resisting the one we already live in.

ကျွန်မတို့ ရှင်သန်နေပြီးသား တစ်ခုကို ခုခံနေတာကို ရပ်တန့်ဖို့ပဲလိုတာပါ။
