On the red tiles in my family's den

I would dance and sing to the made-for-TV movie "Gypsy,"

A wonderful dream, papa."

I would sing it with the urgency and the burning desire of a nine-year-old

꿈을 가지고 있던 9살 소녀의 절박함과 타오르는 열정으로

who did, in fact, have a dream.

저는 노래를 하였습니다.

My dream was to be an actress.

제 꿈은 배우가 되는 것이었죠.

And it's true that I never saw anyone who looked like me

텔레비전이나 영화에서 저처럼 생긴 사람을

in television or in films,

한번도 본 적이 없는 게 사실이긴 해요.

and sure, my family and friends and teachers all constantly warned me

그리고 제 가족과 친구들, 선생님들도 제게 경고했죠.

that people like me didn't make it in Hollywood.

저같은 사람은 할리우드에 진출하지 못할 거라고요.

But I was an American.

하지만 저는 미국인입니다.

I had been taught to believe that anyone could achieve anything,

저는 누구나 꿈을 이룰 수 있다고 믿으라고 배웠습니다.

regardless of the color of their skin,

피부 색깔이나

the fact that my parents immigrated from Honduras,

the fact that I had no money.

I didn't need my dream to be easy,

I just needed it to be possible.

And when I was 15,

I got my first professional audition.

It was a commercial for cable subscriptions

or bail bonds, I don't really remember.

What I do remember is that the casting director asked me,

"Could you do that again, but just this time, sound more Latina."

"혹시 다시 한번 해볼래? 이번엔 좀 더 라틴계 사람처럼 들리게."

"Um, OK.

"음, 네.. 그러니깐

So you want me to do it in Spanish?" I asked.

스페인어로 하라는 말씀이시죠?" 라고 제가 물었습니다.

"No, no, do it in English, just sound Latina."

"아니, 아니, 영어로 하는데 라틴계 사람처럼 들리게."

"Well, I am a Latina, so isn't this what a Latina sounds like?"

"음, 제가 라틴계 맞는데, 이게 라틴계 사람처럼 들리는게 아님 뭐죠?"

There was a long and awkward silence,

길고 어색한 침묵이 흘렀습니다.

and then finally,

그리고 드디어,

"OK, sweetie, never mind, thank you for coming in, bye!"

"알았어, 신경쓰지마. 와줘서 고마워. 안녕!"

It took me most of the car ride home to realize that by "sound more Latina"

집에 거의 도착해서야 깨달았어요. "더 라틴계 사람처럼 들리게" 라는 건

she was asking me to speak in broken English.

바로 유창하지 못한 영어를 쓰라는 말이었다는 걸요.

And I couldn't figure out why the fact

그리고 저는 이해가 되지 않았어요.

that I was an actual, real-life, authentic Latina

왜 제가 실제로 진짜 라틴계라는 사실이

didn't really seem to matter.

중요하지 않아 보였던 이유가 뭔지요.

Anyway, I didn't get the job.

아무튼 전 오디션에 떨어졌죠.

I didn't get a lot of the jobs people were willing to see me for:

사람들이 제게 하길 바랬던 다른 많은 배역들도 따내지 못했어요.

the gang-banger's girlfriend,

조폭여친이나

the sassy shoplifter,

대담한 가게 털이범이나

pregnant chola number two.

임신한 라틴계 여자2 등등..

(Laughter)

(웃음)

These were the kinds of roles that existed for someone like me.

이런 배역들이 바로 저같은 사람을 위해 존재했던 것입니다.

Someone they looked at and saw as too brown, too fat,

사람들이 보기에는 피부색이 진하고, 뚱뚱하고,

too poor, too unsophisticated.

가난하고, 촌티가 나는 사람에게요.

These roles were stereotypes

이런 역할들은 고정관념적이며

and couldn't have been further from my own reality

저희 현실과도 한참 거리가 있었으며

or from the roles I dreamt of playing.

제가 꿈꿔온 역할과도 거리가 멀었죠.

I wanted to play people who were complex and multidimensional,

저는 복잡하고 다차원적인 사람,

people who existed in the center of their own lives.

자신의 인생에서 중심에 있는 사람을 연기하고 싶었습니다.

Not cardboard cutouts that stood in the background of someone else's.

누군가의 배경이 되어 서있는 종이상자로 만든 무대장식 말고요.

But when I dared to say that to my manager --

하지만 제가 용기를 내서 매니저에게 말했을 때

that's the person I pay to help me find opportunity --

제가 기회를 찾을 수 있도록 도와달라고 고용한 바로 그 사람이

his response was,

이렇게 대답했어요.

"Someone has to tell that girl she has unrealistic expectations."

"비현실적인 기대를 가지고 있다고 누군가는 말해줘야 할 것 같네요."

And he wasn't wrong.

그가 틀린 것은 아녔어요.

I mean, I fired him, but he wasn't wrong.

제말은, 제가 그를 해고했지만, 그가 틀리진 않았어요.

Because whenever I did try to get a role that wasn't a poorly written stereotype,

왜냐하면 제가 고정관념적이지 않게 그려진 배역을 얻으려고 노력할 때마다

I would hear,

"We're not looking to cast this role diversely."

Or, "We love her, but she's too specifically ethnic."

Or, "Unfortunately, we already have one Latino in this movie."

I kept receiving the same message again and again and again.

저는 여러번 또 다시 같은 메시지를 받았습니다.

That my identity was an obstacle I had to overcome.

바로 저의 정체성이 제가 극복해야 할 장애물이라는 것을요.

And so I thought,

그래서 저는 생각했습니다.

"Come at me, obstacle.

"까불지마, 장애물.

I'm an American. My name is America.

나 미국인이야. 내 이름은 아메리카야.

I trained my whole life for this, I'll just follow the playbook,

I'll work harder."

And so I did, I worked my hardest

to overcome all the things that people said were wrong with me.

I stayed out of the sun so that my skin wouldn't get too brown,

I straightened my curls into submission.

I constantly tried to lose weight,

All so that when people looked at me,

they wouldn't see a too fat, too brown, too poor Latina.

They would see what I was capable of.

And maybe they would give me a chance.

And in an ironic twist of fate,

when I finally did get a role that would make all my dreams come true,

it was a role that required me to be exactly who I was.

Ana in "Real Women Have Curves"

was a brown, poor, fat Latina.

I had never seen anyone like her, anyone like me,

저는 그녀와 같은 사람, 혹은 저와 같은 사람이

existing in the center of her own life story.

인생 이야기에서 중심이 되는 경우를 한번도 본 적이 없었어요.

I traveled throughout the US

저는 그 영화 촬영을 위해서 미국 전역 및 많은 나라를 여행하였습니다.

and to multiple countries with this film

where people, regardless of their age, ethnicity, body type,

saw themselves in Ana.

애나라는 인물에서 그들 자신을 발견하였습니다.

A 17-year-old chubby Mexican American girl

17세의 통통한 멕시코계 미국인 여자로

struggling against cultural norms to fulfill her unlikely dream.

이루어지기 힘든 꿈을 실현하기 위해 문화적 규범에 대항하여 싸우는 모습요.

In spite of what I had been told my whole life,

제 평생 들어왔던 말들에도 불구하고, 저는 직접

I saw firsthand that people actually did want to see stories about people like me.

사람들이 실제로 저같은 사람들에 대한 이야기를 듣기를 원한다는 걸 경험했어요.

And that my unrealistic expectations

우리 문화에서 진정성 있게 제가 표현되는 것을

to see myself authentically represented in the culture

보기를 원하는 그런 비현실적인 기대는

were other people’s expectations, too.

다른 이들의 기대이기도 했습니다.

"Real Women Have Curves"

"리얼 우먼 해브 커브스"는

was a critical, cultural and financial success.

작품성, 문화, 상업적으로도 성공작이었어요.

"Great," I thought, "We did it!

"멋져요," 저는 생각했어요. "우리가 해냈어요!

We proved our stories have value.

우리는 우리의 이야기들이 가치가 있음을 증명했어요.

Things are going to change now."

이제부터 세상은 바뀔 거예요."

But I watched as very little happened.

하지만 변화는 거의 목격되지 않았습니다.

There was no watershed.

분수령이 없었던 거죠.

No one in the industry was rushing to tell more stories

대중이 그토록 기다리고 보고 싶어하는 이야기들을

about the audience that was hungry and willing to pay to see them.

Four years later, when I got to play Ugly Betty,

I saw the same phenomenon play out.

"Ugly Betty" premiered in the US to 16 million viewers

But in spite of "Ugly Betty's" success,

It's been 12 years

since I became the first and only Latina

to ever win an Emmy in a lead category.

That is not a point of pride.

That is a point of deep frustration.

그것은 오히려 깊은 좌절감을 주었습니다.

Not because awards prove our worth,

수상하는 것은 우리의 가치를 증명하기 때문이 아니라

but because who we see thriving in the world

세상을 성공적으로 살아가고있는 사람들이 우리들에게

teaches us how to see ourselves,

우리 자신을 어떻게 봐야 할지

how to think about our own value,

우리들의 가치에 대해 어떻게 생각할지

how to dream about our futures.

우리의 미래를 어떻게 꿈꿀지를 가르쳐 주기 때문이죠.

And anytime I begin to doubt that,

그리고 제가 의심이 들기 시작할 때면

I remember that there was a little girl, living in the Swat Valley of Pakistan.

저는 파키스탄 스왓 밸리에 살고 있는 작은 소녀가 있다는 것을 기억합니다.

And somehow, she got her hands on some DVDs

그 소녀는 어디에선가 구한

of an American television show

미국 TV 드라마 DVD를 통해

in which she saw her own dream of becoming a writer reflected.

작가가 되고자 하는 그녀의 꿈을 목격합니다.

In her autobiography, Malala wrote,

자서전에서 말랄라는 이렇게 썼습니다.

"I had become interested in journalism

"제가 저널리즘에 관심을 갖게 된 건

after seeing how my own words could make a difference

저의 말과 글이 변화를 가져올 수 있음을 목격하고 나서

and also from watching the "Ugly Betty" DVDs

그리고 또 미국 잡지사에서의 삶을 그려낸 "어글리 베티"라는

about life at an American magazine."

For 17 years of my career,

17년 동안 사회생활을 하면서

I have witnessed the power our voices have

저는 우리 목소리가 가진 힘을 목격해왔습니다.

when they can access presence in the culture.

그 목소리가 문화속에서 존재감을 가질 때요.

I've seen it.

전 목격했습니다.

I've lived it, we've all seen it.

그것은 제 삶이었고, 여러분들 모두도 목격했습니다.

In entertainment, in politics,

연예계에서, 정치에서

in business, in social change.

경영분야와 사회변화에서도요.

We cannot deny it -- presence creates possibility.

존재는 가능성을 창조한단 걸 부인할 수 없습니다.

But for the last 17 years,

하지만 지난 17년 동안

I've also heard the same excuses

저는 동일한 변명도 들어왔습니다.

for why some of us can access presence in the culture

왜 어떤 사람들은 문화에서 존재할 수 있는 반면

and some of us can't.

다른 이들은 할 수 없는지요.

Our stories don't have an audience,

우리 이야기는 관객이 없어요.

our experiences won't resonate in the mainstream,

our voices are too big a financial risk.

우리가 목소리를 내면 금전적으로 위험이 너무 커요.

Just a few years ago, my agent called

몇년전, 제 담당자가 전화를 했어요.

to explain to me why I wasn't getting a role in a movie.

제가 왜 영화배역을 따내지 못했는지 설명하려고요.

He said, "They loved you

그는 말했죠, "당신이 맘에 든데요.

and they really, really do want to cast diversely,

그리고 정말로 다양성을 반영하여 캐스팅하고자 하는데,

but the movie isn't financeable until they cast the white role first."

He delivered the message with a broken heart

and with a tone that communicated, "I understand how messed up this is."

But nonetheless, just like hundreds of times before,

I felt the tears roll down my face.

And the pang of rejection rise up in me

거절의 고통이 엄습해왔습니다.

and then the voice of shame scolding me,

"You are a grown woman, stop crying over a job."

"넌 다 큰 성인이잖아, 일 때문에 울지말자."

I went through this process for years of accepting the failure as my own

몇년 동안 저는 실패를 제 잘못으로 받아들이고

and then feeling deep shame that I couldn't overcome the obstacles.

장애물을 극복하지 못한다는 깊은 수치심을 느끼는 과정을 경험했죠.

But this time, I heard a new voice.

A voice that said, "I'm tired.

I've had enough."

A voice that understood

my tears and my pain were not about losing a job.

They were about what was actually being said about me.

What had been said about me my whole life

and directors and writers and agents and managers

and teachers and friends and family.

선생님, 친구들과 가족들이 했던 말들 때문이죠.

That I was a person of less value.

제가 가치가 없는 사람이라는 말이요.

I thought sunscreen and straightening irons

저는 선크림을 바르고 머리를 곧게 펴면

would bring about change in this deeply entrenched value system.

깊게 뿌리박힌 가치체계에 변화가 생길 거라고 생각했었죠.

But what I realized in that moment

하지만 그때 제가 깨달은 것은

was that I was never actually asking the system to change.

시스템이 변화하기를 한번도 진정으로 요구한 적이 없었다는 것입니다.

I was asking it to let me in, and those aren't the same thing.

저는 제가 그 시스템에 들어가기를 요청했을 뿐이고 그건 다른 거죠.

I couldn't change what a system believed about me,

저는 시스템이 저를 어떻게 생각하는지를 바꾸지 못했습니다.

while I believed what the system believed about me.

저는 시스템이 저에 대해서 가진 생각들을 그대로 믿었죠.

And I did.

정말 그랬어요.

I, like everyone around me,

전, 제 주변의 다른 사람들처럼

believed that it wasn't possible for me to exist in my dream as I was.

제 자신 그대로 모습으로 제 꿈속에서 존재하는 것이 불가능하다고 생각했죠.

And I went about trying to make myself invisible.

저는 제 자신이 드러나지 않도록 노력하기 시작하였습니다.

What this revealed to me was that it is possible

이런 일들이 제게 알려준 것은 변화를 목격하기를

to be the person who genuinely wants to see change

진정으로 원하는 사람이 되는 것이 가능하다는 것입니다.

while also being the person whose actions keep things the way they are.

자기 자신 그대로 모습으로 행동하는 동시에요.

And what it's led me to believe is that change isn't going to come

그것이 단순히 좋은 사람과 나쁜 사람을 구분함으로써

by identifying the good guys and the bad guys.

변화가 일어나지 않을 것이라고 믿게 만들었습니다.

That conversation lets us all off the hook.

그 대화는 우리 모두를 자유롭게 만들었죠.

Because most of us are neither one of those.

Change will come

when each of us has the courage

to question our own fundamental values and beliefs.

And then see to it that our actions lead to our best intentions.

I am just one of millions of people

저는 수백만 명 중 한명입니다.

who have been told that in order to fulfill my dreams,

나의 꿈을 실현하기 위해서, 재능을 세상에 공헌하기 위해서,

in order to contribute my talents to the world

내가 누구인가에 대한 진실에 맞서 저항을 해야만 한다고

I have to resist the truth of who I am.

들어왔던 사람들 중 한명이요.

I for one, am ready to stop resisting

저는 저항을 멈출 준비가 되었습니다.

and to start existing as my full and authentic self.

그리고 진정한 제 자신으로서 존재할 준비도 되었습니다.

If I could go back and say anything

춤을 추며 꿈을 꾸고 있던 9살 소녀에게

to that nine-year-old, dancing in the den, dreaming her dreams,

돌아가서 말할 수 있다면

I would say,

저는 말할 거예요.

my identity is not my obstacle.

나의 정체성은 장애물이 아니라

My identity is my superpower.

나의 정체성은 초인적 힘이라고요.

Because the truth is,

왜냐하면 사실은,

I am what the world looks like.

제가 바로 이 세상의 일부이며

You are what the world looks like.

여러분들이 바로 이 세상입니다.

Collectively, we are what the world actually looks like.

모두 함께, 우리들은 바로 우리의 세상을 보여주고 있습니다.

And in order for our systems to reflect that,

우리 시스템이 그것을 반영하기 위해서

they don't have to create a new reality.

새로운 현실을 만들어낼 필요가 없습니다.

They just have to stop resisting the one we already live in.

우리가 이미 살고 있는 이 현실에 저항하는 것을 멈추어야 할 뿐입니다.
