They're all inventions

None of these things would have existed without language.

Imagine creating any one of those things

Basically, language is the most important thing

Formal linguistics is a relatively young field, more or less.

What's the US government on a budget or something?

A lot of these things can be chalked up to misunderstandings,

both about what language is and about the formal study of language,

And I think there's something that underlies a lot of these misunderstandings

I'm going to pull out some quotes from this,

and I want you to see if you can figure out

what underlies some of these opinions and ideas.

So in other words, why bother learning a foreign language

when they're not even going to read the classic in the original anyway?

သူတို့ကို နိုင်ငံခြားဘာသာစကားကို သင်ပေးဖို့ ဘာ့အတွက် လိုအပ်ပါသလဲ။

What's the point?

ဆိုလိုရင်းက ဘာများလဲ။

"Studying foreign languages in school is a waste of time,

compared to other things that you could be doing in school."

"Europe has a lot of language groups clustered in a relatively small space."

So for Americans, ah, what's the point of learning another language?

You're not really going to get a lot of bang for your buck out of that.

This is my favorite,

What underlies a lot of these attitudes is the conceptual metaphor,

And there's something that rings very true about this metaphor.

Language is kind of a tool

ကိုယ်ဟာ ဒေသသုံး ဘာသာစကားကို မသိရင် ဘာမှမလုပ်နိုင်ဘူး ဆိုတော့

in that, if you know the local language, you can do more than if you didn't.

ဘာသာစကားဟာ ကိရိယာတစ်ခုနဲ့ တူတာ မှန်ပါတယ်။

But the implication is that language is only a tool,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဘာသာစကားကို ကိရိယာတစ်ခု သက်သက်လို မြင်မှုကျတော့

and this is absolutely false.

လုံးဝကြီးကို မှားနေပါတယ်။

If language was a tool, it would honestly be a pretty poor tool.

ဘာသာစကားဟာ ကိရိယာတခုမျှသာ ဖြစ်ခဲ့ရင် အတော့်ကို ဟောင်နွမ်းလောက်ပါပြီ။

And we would have abandoned it long ago for something that was a lot better.

Think about just any sentence.

ဒီနေရာမှာ ဝါကျတစ်ကြောင်း စဉ်းစားကြည့်ပါ။

Here's a sentence that I'm sure I've said in my life: "Yesterday I saw Kyn."

ကျွန်တော့်ဘဝထဲတွင်“မနေ့က ကျွန်တော် Kyn ကိုမြင်ခဲ့တယ်” ပြောခဲ့ဘူးပါတယ်။

ကျွန်တော့် သူငယ်ချင်း အမည်က Kyn ပါ။

I have a friend named Kyn.

And when I say this sentence, "Yesterday I saw Kyn,"

"Yesterday I saw Kyn " လို့ ပြောဆိုချိန်မှာ

do you think it's really the case

ကျွန်တော့် ခေါင်းထဲမှာ ပေါ်ပေါက်နေသမျှ အားလုံးဟာ

that everything in my mind is now implanted in your mind

ခုနက ဝါကျမှတစ်ဆင့် ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ စိတ်ထဲမှာပါ

ပေါ်လာပြီလို့ သေချာပါသလား။

via this sentence?

Hardly, because there's a lot of other stuff going on.

ဆက်စပ်နေတဲ့ အချင်းအရာတွေ များလွန်းလို့ သေချာဖို့ မလွယ်ပါ။

Like, when I say "yesterday,"

ဥပမာ၊ "မနေ့က" စကားလုံး ဆိုပါစို့။

I might think what the weather was like yesterday because I was there.

ကျွန်တော်က အဲဒီမှာ ရာသီဥတု ဘယ်လို ရှိခဲ့မှန်းကို ထင်မိနိုင်သေးတယ်။

And if I'm remembering,

ဆက်ပြီး ကျွန်တော် မှတ်မိသေးတာက

I'll probably remember there was something I forgot to mail, which I did.

This was a preplanned joke, but I really did forget to mail something.

And so that means I'm going to have to do it Monday,

Is it any wonder that our system is so poor?

If that was how we had to experience cake,

the thing that makes us human,

the thing that makes us different from other animals,

ကျန်တဲ့ တိရိစ္ဆာန်တွေနဲ့ကျုပ်တို့ကို မတူအောင် လုပ်ပေးတဲ့ အချက်ပါပဲ၊

is all inside here somewhere,

ကျုပ်တို့ အတွင်းထဲမှာ တစ်နေရာရာမှာရှိနေတဲ့ အရာပါ၊

and all we have to do to represent it is our own languages.

ကျုပ်တို့အနေနဲ့ အဲဒါကို မိတ်ဆက်ပေးဖို့ လိုအပ်တာက ကျုပ်တို့ရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားတွေပါပဲ။

A language is our best way of showing what's going on in our head.

ကျုပ်တို့ခေါင်းထဲမှာ ဖြစ်ပျက်နေတာကို ပြသဖို့ ဘာသာစကားဟာ အကောင်းဆုံးနည်းလမ်းပဲ။

Imagine if I wanted to ask a big question, like:

‘‘လူသားရဲ့ တွေးခေါ်ပုံနဲ့ ခံစားချက်များရဲ့ သဘာဝက ဘာလဲ‘‘

"What is the nature of human thought and emotion?"

မေးခွန်းကို ခင်ဗျားတို့အား မေးလိုတာကို စိတ်ကူးကြည့်ကြပါ။

What you'd want to do

is you'd want to examine as many different languages

ခင်ဗျား လုပ်ချင်ကြမှာက

အတတ်နိုင်ဆုံး အများဆုံး ကွဲပြားကြတဲ့ ဘာသာစကားတွေကို

as possible.

လေ့လာကြရပါမယ်။

One isn't just going to do it.

တစ်ခုတည်းကို လေ့လာရုံနဲ့ မဖြစ်နိုင်ပါ။

To give you an example,

ခင်ဗျားတို့အား ဥပမာတစ်ခု အနေနဲ့၊

here's a picture I took of little Roman,

that I took with a 12-megapixel camera.

Now, here's that same picture with a lot fewer pixels.

Obviously, neither of these pictures is a real cat.

But one gives you a lot better sense of what a cat is than the other.

Language is not merely a tool.

It is our legacy,

it's our way of conveying what it means to be human.

And of course, by "our" legacy, I mean all humans everywhere.

And losing even one language makes that picture a lot less clear.

So as a job for the past 10 years

I create languages.

These are called "conlangs,"

အဲဒါတွေကို "conlangs" လို့ ခေါ်ကြတယ်၊

short for "constructed languages."

"constructed languages" ရဲ့ အတိုကောက်ပါ။

Now, presenting these facts back to back,

အချက်နှစ်ချက်ကို ဘေးချင်းယှဉ် မိတ်ဆက်ပေးလိုက်ခြင်းက

that we're losing languages on our planet

ကျုပ်တို့ဟာ ကမ္ဘာ့ဘာသာစကားတွေကို ဆုံးရှုံးနေရတယ်၊

and that I create brand-new languages,

you might think that there's some nonsuperficial connection

between these two.

In fact, a lot of people have drawn a line between those dots.

This is a guy who got all bent out of shape

that there was a conlang in James Cameron's "Avatar."

James Cameron ရဲ့ Avatar ရုပ်ရှင်ထဲက conlang တစ်ခု ရှိနေပါတယ်။

He says,

"But in the three years it took James Cameron

Probably a lot more than that, actually.

A truly profound and poignant statement --

if you don't think about it at all.

တချို့တို့ကတော့ အဲဒီအကြောင်း စဉ်းစားချင်မှ စဉ်းစားမိကြမှာပါ။

(Laughter)

But when I was here at Cal,

ကျွန်တော် ဘွဲ့ယူစဉ်တုန်းက

I completed two majors.

အဓိက ဘာသာရပ် နှစ်ခုကို သင်ယူခဲ့တယ်။

One of them was linguistics, but the other one was English.

တစ်ခုက ဘာသာဗေဒ ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပြီး နောက်တစ်ခုက အင်္ဂလိပ်စာပါ။

And of course, the English major, the study of English,

is not actually the study of the English language, as we know,

it's the study of literature.

Literature is just a wonderful thing,

because basically, literature, more broadly, is kind of like art;

it falls under the rubric of art.

And what we do with literature,

authors create new, entire beings and histories.

what kind of depth and emotion and just unique spirit

authors can invest into these fictional beings.

So much so, that, I mean -- take a look at this.

There's an entire series of books

လုံးဝကို စိတ်ကူးထားတဲ့ ဇာတ်ကောင်တွေ အကြောင်း

that are written about fictional characters.

စာအုပ်တွေ တသီတတန်းကြီး ရှိပါတယ်။

Like, the entire book is just about one fictional, fake human being.

တနည်း၊ စာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်လုံးဟာ အတုဖန်တီးထားတဲ့ လူတစ်ယောက် အကြောင်း ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်။

There's an entire book on George F. Babbitt

from Sinclair Lewis's "Babbitt,"

and I guarantee you, that book is longer than "Babbitt,"

So we've never questioned the fact that literature is interesting.

ဒီတော့ စာပေဟာ စိတ်ဝင်စားစရာ ကောင်းတာကို ကျုပ်တို့ ဘယ်တော့မှ မေးခွန်း မထုတ်ခဲ့ကြပါ။

But despite the fact,

အဲဒါအပြင့်၊

not even linguists are actually interested in what created languages can tell us

ဘာသာဗေဒပညာရှင်တွေကတောင်မှ ဖန်တီးထားတဲ့ စာပေက ဘာတွေ ပြောနိုင်ကြောင်း

about the depth of the human spirit just as an artistic endeavor.

အနုပညာအဖြစ် လူသားတွေရဲ့ ခံစားချက်ကို သက် ရောက်နိုင်ပုံကို စိတ်မဝင်စားကြပါဘူး။

I'll give you a nice little example here.

There was an article written about me

တချိန်တုန်း ကျွန်တော့်အကြောင်း ဆောင်းပါး တစ်ပုဒ် ပေါ်လာခဲ့တယ်။

in the California alumni magazine a while back.

California alumnimagazine ထဲမှာ မကြာခင်တုန်းကပါ။

And when they wrote this article,

အဲဒီဆောင်းပါးကိုရေး သူတို့ရေးကြစဉ်

they wanted to get somebody from the opposing side,

ဝေဖန်ရေးပေးမယ့်သူ တစ်ယောက်ယောက်ကို သူတို့ ရှာလိုခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

which, in hindsight, seems like a weird thing to do.

လုပ်ရိုးလုပ်စဉ် မဟုတ်ဘဲ ထူးဆန်းနေခဲ့ပါတယ်။

You're just talking about a person,

ကိုယ်က လူတစ်ယောက် အကြောင်းကို ပြောပြနေတုန်းပဲ ရှိသေး၊

and you want to get somebody from the opposing side of that person.

အဲဒီသူကို ဝေဖန်ရေးမယ့် လူတစ်ယောက်ကို ရှာချင်နေကြပြီ။

Essentially, this is just a puff piece, but whatever.

So, they happened to get

နောက်ဆုံးတွင် သူတို့ ကျုပ်တို့ခေတ်အတွင်း

one of the most brilliant linguists of our time,

အကျော်ကြားဆုံး ဘာသာဗေဒပညာရှင်ကို ရှာတွေခဲ့ကြတယ်၊

George Lakoff, who's a linguist here at Berkeley.

And his work has basically forever changed the fields of linguistics

You should spend the time on something real."

Yeah.

"Something real." Does this remind you of anything?

To use the very framework that he himself invented,

let me refer back to this conceptual metaphor:

language is a tool.

ဘာသာစကားဟာ ကိရိယာတခုပါ။

And he appears to be laboring under this conceptual metaphor;

သူကပါ အဲဒီလို ခံယူချက်ကို လက်ခံထားလျက် လုပ်ကိုင်နေပုံရပါတယ်၊

that is, language is useful when it can be used for communication.

ဆက်သွယ်ရေးအတွက် အသုံးပြုနိုင်မှသာ ဘာသာစကားဟာ အသုံးဝင်တယ် ဆိုတဲ့အချက်ပါ။

Language is useless when it can't be used for communication.

ဆက်သွယ်ရေးအတွက် အသုံးပြုမရနိုင်ရင် ဘာသာစကားဟာ အသုံးမဝင်ပါ။

ကျုပ်တို့ဟာ သေနေကြပြီဖြစ်တဲ့ ဘာသာစကားတွေ ကိုကော ဘာလုပ်ကြရမလဲ စဉ်းစားကြရမယ်။

It might make you wonder: What do we do with dead languages?

But anyway.

ဘယ်လိုပဲဖြစ်ဖြစ်ပေါ့လေ။

So, because of this idea,

it might seem like the very height of absurdity

ကျွန်တော်က HBO ရဲ့ "Game of Thrones" အတွက် ဖန်တီးပေးခဲ့တဲ့

to have a Duolingo course on the High Valyrian language

High Valyrian ဘာသာစကား တစ်ခုဖြစ်တဲ့ Duolingo သင်တန်းကို

that I created for HBO's "Game of Thrones."

တက်မှုဟာ အဓိပ္ပါယ် လုံးဝမရှိနိုင်ပါ။

You might wonder what, exactly, are 740,000 people learning?

တကယ်တမ်းတွင် လူ ၇၄၀,၀၀၀ တို့ဟာ သင်တန်းကို တက်နေကြပါတယ်။

Well, let's take a look at it.

အဲဒီအကြောင်းကို ကြည့်ကြရအောင်။

What are they learning?

သူတို့ ဘာတွေကို သင်ယူနေကြသလဲ။

What could they possibly be learning?

သူတို့ဘာတွေကို သင်ယူရရှိမယ်လို့ မျှော်လင့်နေကြလဲ။

Well, bearing in mind that the other language for this --

ကောင်းပြီ၊ ဒီလို နောက်ဘာသာစကားကို သင်ယူနေကြသူတို့က--

it's for people that speak English --

အင်္ဂလိပ်လိုပြောသူတွေ ဆိုတာကို ထည့်စဉ်းစားကြည့်ပါက။

English speakers are learning quite a bit.

အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားပြောသူ တော်တော်များများက အဲဒီမှာ သင်ယူနေကြတယ်။

Here's a sentence that they will probably never use for communication

ကျွန်တော် ဖတ်ပြမယ့် ဝါကျကို ဆက်သွယ်စကားပြောဖို့ ဘယ်တော့မှာမှ

in their entire lives:

သူတို့ရဲ့ဘဝထဲတွင် သုံးကြမှာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး-

အင်္ဂလိပ်လိုက "The man sees the woman."

The little middle line is the gloss,

အလယ်မှာ မြင်ရတဲ့ လိုင်းငယ်က သင်္ကေတပါ၊

so it's word for word, that's what it says.

စကားလုံး တစ်လုံးချင်းစီကို ဘာသာပြန်ပေးထားတာပါ။

And they're actually learning some very fascinating things,

သူတို့ဟာ၊ အထူးသဖြင့် အင်္ဂလိပ်လို ပြောဆိုကြသူတွေဆိုရင်၊

especially if they're English speakers.

အံ့အားသင့်ဖွယ် အရာတွေကို သင်ယူနေကြပါတယ်။

They're learning that a verb can come at the very end of a sentence.

Doesn't really do that in English when you have two arguments.

They're learning that sometimes

ပြီးတော့ အဲဒီမှာ "the" လုံးဝမရှိဘူးဆိုတော့

a language doesn't have an equivalent for the word "the" -- it's totally absent.

သူတို့ဟာ ဘာသာစကား တချို့ထဲတွင် the မရှိတာကို သိလာကြရတယ်။

That's something language can do.

ဘာသာစကားဟာ အဲဒါကို လုပ်ပေးနိုင်ပါတယ်။

They're learning that a long vowel can actually be longer in duration,

ရှည်လျားတဲ့သရသံဟာ အချိန်ကာလအရပါ ပိုကြာရှည်နိုင်တာကို သူတို့ သိလာကြတယ်။

as opposed to different in quality,

အင်္ဂလိပ်စာထဲမှာလို စကားလုံးအတိုအရှည်နဲ့ အဆိုင်ဘဲ

which is what our long vowels do; they're actually the same length.

သရသံဟာ ရှည်လျားတတ်တာမျိုး မဟုတ်ပါ။

They're learning that there are these little inflections.

ပြီးတော့ သူတို့ဟာ အဲဒီမှာ အသံ ပြောင်းလဲပုံကို သင်ယူကြရတယ်။

Hmm? Hmm?

အင်း။ အင်း။

There are inflections called "cases" on the end of nouns --

နာမ်တွေကို အဆုံးသတ်ရာတွင် အသံပြောင်းပေးမှု ရှိပါတယ်--

that tell you who does what to whom in a sentence.

ဝါကျတစ်ခုထဲတွင် ဘယ်သူက ဘယ်သူကို ဘာလုပ်တယ် ဆိုတာကို ပြသပေးပါတယ်။

Even if you leave the order of the words the same

တကယ်လို့များ စာလုံးတွေရဲ့ နေရာကို မပြောင်းတောင်

and switch the endings,

အဆုံးသတ်သံကို ပြောင်းလိုက်ရင်၊

it changes who does what to whom.

ဘယ်သူက ဘယ်သူကို ဘာလုပ်ကြောင်း အဓိပ္ပါယ် ပြောင်းသွားမယ်။

What they're learning is that languages do things, the same things, differently.

သူတို့ဟာ ဘာသာစကားတွေဟာ တူတဲ့အရာတွေကို မတူကွဲပြားစွာ လုပ်နိုင်တာကို သင်ယူနေကြတယ်။

And that learning languages can be fun.

ပြီးတော့ ဘာသာစကား သင်ယူရတာ ပျော်စရာကောင်းတာကို ပြနေတယ်။

What they're learning is respect for Language: capital "L" Language.

သူတို့လုပ်နေကြတာက ဘာသာစကားအား လေးစားမှုကို ပြသနေကြတာပါ။

And given the fact that 88 percent of Americans only speak English at home,

အမေရိကန်လူမျိုး ၈၈ ရာခိုင်နှုန်းတို့ကသာ အိမ်မှာ အင်္ဂလိပ်လို ပြောကြတယ် ဆိုတော့၊

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

You know why languages die on our planet?

ကျုပ်တို့ ဂြိုဟ်ပေါ်မှာ ဘာသာစကားတွေ သေနေကြတာ ဘာကြောင့်လဲ သိကြလား။

It's not because government imposes one language on a smaller group,

အစိုးရက လူအုပ်စုငယ်ကို ဘာသာစကား တစ်မျိုးတည်းသုံးရန် အမိန့်ပေးလို့ မဟုတ်ပါ။

ဒါမှမဟုတ် ဘာသာစကား တစ်မျိုး ပြောသူတွေကို ရှင်းပစ်ခဲ့လို့ မဟုတ်ပါ။

or because an entire group of speakers is wiped out.

That certainly has happened in the past, and it's happening now,

အတိတ်ကာလမှာ အဲဒီလို ဖြစ်နိုင်ခဲ့ပြီး အခုလည်း ဖြစ်ပျက်နေပုံပေမဲ့၊

but it's not the main reason.

အဓိကအကြောင်းရင်းက အဲဒါ မဟုတ်ပါ။

အဓိကအကြောင်းရင်းက ကလေးတစ်ဦး မွေးလာတဲ့ မိသားစုရဲ့ ဘာသာစကားကို

The main reason is that a child is born to a family

that speaks a language that is not widely spoken in their community,

သူတို့အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းမှာ ကျယ်ကျယ်ပြန့်ပြန့် မပြောဆိုကြလို့ပါ။

and that child doesn't learn it.

အဲဒါနဲ့ အဲဒီကလေးဟာ သူ့ဘာသာစကားကို မသင်ဖြစ်တော့ပါ။

Why?

ဘာကြောင့်လဲ ဆိုရင်။

Because that language is not valued in their community.

အဲဒီ ဘာသာစကားကို သူတို့ရဲ့ အသိုင်းအဝိုင်းမှာ တန်ဖိုးမထားကြလို့ပဲ။

Because the language isn't useful.

အဲဒီ ဘာသာစကားဟာ အသုံးမဝင်လို့ပါ။

Because the child can't go and get a job if they speak that language.

အဲဒီကလေးဟာ သူ့ဘာသာစကားကို သင်ယူပြောကြား ခဲ့မယ် ဆိုရင် အလုပ်ရနိုင်မှာ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

Because if language is just a tool,

ဘာသာစကားဟာ ကကိရိယာ သက်သက် ဖြစ်ခဲ့ရင်

then learning their native language

ကိုယ့်မိခင်ဘာသာစကားကို သင်ယူမှုဟာ

is about as useful as learning High Valyrian,

High Valyrian ကို သင်ယူသလိုပဲ အသုံးဝင်မှာပါ။

so why bother?

ဒီတော့ စိုးရိမ်စရာ မရှိပါဘူး။

Maybe language study isn't going to lead to a lot more linguistic fluency.

ဘာသာစကားကို လေ့လာမှုဟာ ဘာသာစကားပို ကျွမ်းကျင်စေမှာ ဟုတ်ချင်မှ ဟုတ်နိုင်ပေမဲ့

But maybe that's not such a big deal.

တကယ်တော့ အဲဒီအချက်ဟာ သိပ်အရေးမကြီးပါဘူး။

Maybe if more people are studying more languages,

ပိုပိုများတဲ့လူတွေက ဘာသာစကားတွေကို ပိုပိုလေ့လာလာကြပါက၊

it will lead to more linguistic tolerance

ဘာသာစကားဆိုင်ရာ သည်းခံစိတ် ပိုကြီးထွားလာစေလျက်

and less linguistic imperialism.

ဘာသာစကားအရ နယ်ချဲ့မှုဟာ နည်းလာမှာပါ။

Maybe if we actually respect language for what it is --

ကျုပ်တို့က ဘာသာစကားကို တကယ့်ကို လေးစားကြပါက--

literally, the greatest invention in the history of humankind --

လူသားတို့အတွက် တကယ့်ကို အကြီးမားဆုံး တီထွင်မှုအဖြစ် လေးစားကြပါက--

then in the future,

အနာဂါတ် တစ်နေ့တွင်

ကျုပ်တို့ အန္တရာယ် ရင်ဆိုင်နေရတဲ့ ဘာသာစကား များ ရှင်သန်နေကြလို့ ဆက်ဂုဏ်ပြုနိုင်ကြမယ်။

we can celebrate endangered languages as living languages,

ပြတိုက်ထဲမှာသာ မြင်ရမှာကို ရှောင်ရှားနိုင်ကြမှာပါ။

as opposed to museum pieces.
