Nathaniel Kahn: My father, my architect

One thing I wanted to say about film making is -- about this film --

یەکێک لەو شتانەی کە من دەمەوێت لە بارەی درووست کردنی فیلمەوە بیڵێم، بە تایبەت ئەم فیلمە

in thinking about some of the wonderful talks we've heard here,

ئەوەیە کە من سەرەڕای ئەو وانە نایابانەی کە لێرە گوێمان لێی بووە

Michael Moschen, and some of the talks about music,

مایکڵ موشین و هەندێک لەو وانانەی کە لەبارەی ئاوازەوەیە

this idea that there is a narrative line,

لەگەڵ ئەو بیرۆکانەش کە چیرۆکێکیان لە پشتەوەیە

and that music exists in time.

لەبەر ئەوەی کە ئاواز بەشێکە لە کات

A film also exists in time; it's an experience

فیلمیش دیسان بەشێکە لە کات، ئەمە تاقیکردنەوەیە

that you should go through emotionally.

پێویستە بە سۆزەوە پێیدا تێپەڕ بیت

And in making this film I felt that so many of the documentaries I've seen

لە ماوەی درووستکردنی ئەم فیلمەدا، هەستم کرد کە زۆرێک لەو فیلمە دۆکیومێنتاریانەی بینیومە

were all about learning something,

هەر یەکەیان باس لە بابەتێکی دیاری کراو دەکەن

or knowledge, or driven by talking heads, and driven by ideas.

یاخود باسی زانیارین، یان ئەنجامی بیرمەندەکانە ، یاخود باسی هزری تازە و نایابن

And I wanted this film to be driven by emotions,

بەڵام دەمەوێت ئەم فیلمە پێشەنگی سۆزداری بێت، نەک بیرۆکەکان

and really to follow my journey.

وە ڕێڕەوی ڕاستەقینەی خۆم بگرێت

So instead of doing the talking head thing, instead it's composed of scenes,

لەبەر ئەوە، لە بری چاوپێکەوتن کردن لەگەڵ کۆمەڵێک خەڵک دا، هەستام فیلمەکەم لە وێنەی شوێنەکان پێکهێنا

and we meet people along the way.

بە درێژایی ڕیگاکە چاومان بە کۆمەڵێ کەس کەوت

We only meet them once.

تەنها یەک جار چاومان پێیان دەکەوت

They don't come back several times, so it really chronicles a journey.

ئەو کەسانە چەند جارێک ناگەڕینەوە، ئەوە تۆمارکردنی ڕاستی ڕووداوەکانی گەشتەکەیە

It's something like life, that once you get in it

ئەوە شتێکە لە ژیان ئەچێت، کاتێک دەچیتە ناوی

you can't get out.

ناتوانیت لێی دەربچیت

There are two clips I want to show you,

دەمەوێت دوو دیمەنتان نیشان بدەم

the first one is a kind of hodgepodge,

یەکەمیان باس لە تێکەڵەیەک دەکات

its just three little moments, four little moments

کە تەنها چەند ساتێکی کەم دەخایەنێت

with three of the people who are here tonight.

لەگەڵ سێ لەو کەسانەی کە ئەمڕۆ ئامادە بوون لێرە

It's not the way they occur in the film,

گرنگ ئەوە نی یە کە ئەوان لەم دیمەنانەدا دەرکەوتوون

because they are part of much larger scenes.

چونکە ئەمانەش بەشن لە دیمەنی گەورەتر

They play off each other in a wonderful way.

ئەم دیمەن و بەسەرهاتانەش بەشێوەیەکی نایاب تێکەڵی یەک دەبن

And that ends with a little clip of my father, of Lou,

دواتریش بە دیمەنێکی بچوکی باوکم کۆتایی پێ دێت

talking about something that is very dear to him,

کە باس لە بابەتێکی ئازیزی خۆی دەکرد

which is the accidents of life.

ئەوەش ڕوودانی بەسەرهاتەکانی ژیانە

I think he felt that the greatest things in life were accidental,

وابزانم کە هەستی بەوە دەکرد کە گەورەترین بابەتەکانی ژیان، شتە چاوەڕوان نەکراوەکانە

and perhaps not planned at all.

ئەو بابەتانەش کە بە هیچ شێوەیەک پلانیان بۆ دانەنراوە

And those three clips will be followed by a scene of

وە ئەم سێ گرتەیەش دیمەنێکی تری بە دوادا دێت

perhaps what, to me, is really his greatest building

کە هی یەکێک لە نایابترین باڵەخانەکانە -بە بۆچونی من- باشترین باڵەخانەیە

which is a building in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

کە لە دکا- لە بەنگلادیشە

He built the capital over there.

ئەو لەوێدا پایتەختی درووست کرد

And I think you'll enjoy this building, it's never been seen --

پێم وایە کە ئێوە ئەم بینایەتان زۆر بە دڵ دەبێت کە پێشتر نەبینراوە

it's been still photographed, but never photographed by a film crew.

وێنەی ئەم بینایە تەنها بە کامێرای فۆتۆگرافی گیراوە، هەرگیز پێشتر بە کامێرای ڤیدیۆ وێنەی نەگیراە

We were the first film crew in there.

ئێمە یەکەمین تیمی وێنەگر بووین لەوێ

So you'll see images of this remarkable building.

وێنەی ئەم بینا ناوازەیە دەبینن

A couple of things to keep in mind when you see it,

وە پێویستە لە کاتی بینینیدا کۆمەڵە شتێک لەبەرچاو بگرین

it was built entirely by hand,

یەکەم: هەموو بیناکە بە دەست درووست کراوە

I think they got a crane the last year.

پیم وابێت ساڵی پێشوو بەرزکەرەوەیان هێناوە

It was built entirely by hand off bamboo scaffolding,

بە بەکارهێنانی پارچەی داری بامبۆ بە دەست درووستیان کردووە

people carrying these baskets of concrete on their heads,

خەڵکی تاسەی چیمەنتۆیان بە سەر سەر هەڵدەگرت

dumping them in the forms.

و لە قاڵبەکاندا بەتاڵیان دەکردەوە

It is the capital of the country,

ئەوێ ناوەندی شارەکەیە و ناوەندی دیموکراسیش لەوێ یە

and it took 23 years to build,

درووستکردنی ئەو باڵەخانەیە ٢٣ ساڵی خایاند

which is something they seem to be very proud of over there.

وا دیارە کە لەوێ شانازی زۆری پیوە دەکەن

It took as long as the Taj Mahal.

کاتی درووست کردنی هێندەی (تاج محل)ی پێچووە

Unfortunately it took so long that Lou never saw it finished.

وە بەداخەوە کاتی تەواوکردنی هێندە زؤری خایاند کە باوکم (لو) کۆتاییەکەی نەبینی

He died in 1974.

چونکە لەساڵی ١٩٧٤ دا کۆچی دوایی کرد

The building was finished in 1983.

وە تەواوکردنی باڵەخانەکەش تا ساڵی ١٩٨٣ ی خایاند

So it continued on for many years

یان دەتوانم بڵێم، تەواوکردنی بیناکە

after he died.

تا چەند ساڵێک دوای مردنی باوکمی خایاند

Think about that when you see that building,

داواکارم لێتان کە لە کاتی تەمەشا کردنی فیلمەکە بیربکەنەوە

that sometimes the things we strive for so hard in life we never get to see finished.

لەوەی کە ئەو شتانەی کە لە ژیانماندا هەوڵیان بۆ دەدەین، بۆمان نەنوسراوە کە کۆتاییەکەی ببینین

And that really struck me about my father,

هەر ئەوەشە کە توشی شۆکم دەکات دەربارەی باوکم

in the sense that he had such belief

چونکە ئەو بە توندی ئیمانی بەوە هەبوو

that somehow, doing these things

کە بەیەکێک لە ڕێگاکان کارەکەی دەگاتە ئامانج

giving in the way that he gave, that something good would come out of it,

وە لە ڕێگەی ئەو هەموو قوربانیدان و هەوڵ و تەقەلایەی کە دەیدا

even in the middle of a war, there was a war with Pakistan at one point,

تەنانەت لە کاتی ئەو شەڕەی کە لە یەکێک لە قۆناغەکاندا لەگەڵ پاکستان ڕووی دەدا

and the construction stopped totally and he kept working,

و تەنانەت لەگەڵ وەستاندنی درووست کردنی باڵەخانەکەدا، ئەو هەر بەردەوام بوو لەسەر کاری خۆی

because he felt, "Well when the war is done

چونکە بەردەوام بەخۆی دەگوت: باشە، کاتێک کە شەڕ کۆتایی پێهات

they'll need this building."

پێویستیان بەم باڵەخانەیە دەبیت

So, those are the two clips I'm going to show.

وە ئەمانەش ئەو دوو دیمەنەن کە نیشانتانی دەدەم

Roll that tape.

دەست بکە بە نیشاندانەکە

چەپڵە لێدان

Richard Saul Wurman: I remember hearing him talk at Penn.

ریچارد سۆل ورمان: بیرمە کە لە ویلایەتی پەنسیلڤانیا قسەی دەکرد

And I came home and I said to my father and mother,

گەڕامەوە بۆ ماڵەوە و بە دایک و باوکمم وت

"I just met this man: doesn't have much work,

ئێستا چاوم بە پێاوێک کەوت کە کارێکی زۆری نەبوو

and he's sort of ugly, funny voice,

وە تا ڕادەیەک دەم و چاوێکی ناشرین و پێکەنیناوی هەبوو

and he's a teacher at school.

مامۆستای خوێندنگەشە

I know you've never heard of him, but just mark this day

دەزانم تا ئێستا ناوبانگیتان نەبیستووە، بەڵام ئەم ڕۆژەتان لەبیر بێت

that someday you will hear of him,

چونکە ڕۆژێک ناوبانگی هەر دەبیستن

because he's really an amazing man."

چونکە ئەو بەڕاستی پیاوێکی مەزنە

Frank Gehry: I heard he had some kind of a fling with Ingrid Bergman. Is that true?

فڕانک غیری: بیستوومە کە پەیوەندی هەیە لەگەڵ (ئەنگرێد بیرگمن) ئایا ئەوە ڕاستە؟

Nathaniel Kahn: If he did he was a very lucky man.

نثانیاڵ خان؛ ئەگەر ئەوە ڕاست بێت ئەوا ئەو پیاوێکی زۆر شانسدارە

(Laughter)

پێکەنین

NK: Did you hear that, really?

بەڕاست ئەوەت بیست ؟

FG: Yeah, when he was in Rome.

بەڵێ، ئەو کاتەی کە لە ڕۆما بوو

Moshe Safdie: He was a real nomad.

موشیا سافدی: بەڕاستی پیاوێکی گەڕۆک بوو

And you know, when I knew him when I was in the office,

ئەو کاتە ناسیم کە پێکەوە لە نوسینگەکەی کارمان دەکرد

he would come in from a trip, and he would be in the office

کە لە یەکێک لە گەشتەکانی دەگەڕایەوە، کاتێکی زۆر لە نووسینگەکە دەمایەوە

for two or three days intensely, and he would pack up and go.

بۆ ماوەی دوو بۆ سێ ڕؤژ بە بەردەوامی دەمایەوە، پاشان دیسان شتەکانی دەپێچایەوە و سەر لە نوێ دەڕۆشتەوە

You know he'd be in the office till three in the morning working with us

کاتێکی زۆر لە نوسینگە دەمایەوە، تاوەکو سێی بەیانی کاری دەکرد

and there was this kind of sense of the nomad in him.

ئیتر هەستت بەوە دەکرد کە لەو جۆرە کەسانەیە کە حەز بە گەڕان دەکات

I mean as tragic as his death was in a railway station,

سەرەڕای ئەوەی کە لە وێستگەیەکی شەمەندەنەفەردا وەفاتی کرد

it was so consistent with his life, you know?

وەفاتەکەی لەگەڵ شیوازی ژیانیدا گونجابوو

I mean I often think I'm going to die in a plane,

مەبەستم ئەوەیە کە من زۆر کات وا هەست دەکەم کە لە فڕۆکەدا دەمرم

or I'm going to die in an airport,

یان لە فڕۆکەخانە

or die jogging without an identification on me.

یاخود بە ڕیگاوە دەمرم بە بێ ئەوەی کە هەیەیەکم پێ بێ

I don't know why I sort of carry that

نازانم بۆچی هەڵگری ئەم بیرۆکانەم

from that memory of the way he died.

هەر لەم ڕۆوە باسی ئەو شیوەیە دەکەم کە وەفاتی پێ ئەکەم

But he was a sort of a nomad at heart.

بەڵام لە ناخییەوە زۆری حەز لە گەشت بوو

Louis Kahn: How accidental our existences are really

لویس خان: دەرکەوتنی ئێمە لێرەدا چەندە

and how full of influence by circumstance.

وە تا چ ڕادەیەک کاریگەری لەسەر بارودۆخی ئێستا هەیە

Man: We are the morning workers who come, all the time, here

ئێمە کرێکاری بەیانیان بووین، بەردەوام دەهاتین بۆ ئێرە

and enjoy the walking, city's beauty and the atmosphere

وە چێژمان لە پیاسەکردن و جوانی شارەکە و کەشەکە بە گشتی وەردەگرت

and this is the nicest place of Bangladesh.

ئەم جێگایە جوانترین جێگەکانی بەنگلادیشە

We are proud of it.

ئێمە شانازی پێوە دەکەین

NK: You're proud of it?

نثانیال خان: ئێوە شانازی پێوە دەکەن؟

Man: Yes, it is the national image of Bangladesh.

بەڵێ، ئەمە وێنەیەکی نەتەوەیی بەنگلادیشە

NK: Do you know anything about the architect?

نثانیال خان: هیچ شتێک دەربارەی ئەندازیارەکەی دەزانی؟

Man: Architect? I've heard about him; he's a top-ranking architect.

ئەندازیارەکەی؟ بیستوومە کە کەسێکی زیرەک بووە

NK: Well actually I'm here because I'm the architect's son,

نثانیال خان: لە ڕاستیدا من لێرەم چوونکە کوڕی بیناسازەکەم

he was my father.

ئەوە باوکمە

Man: Oh! Dad is Louis Farrakhan?

بەڕاست ؟ لویس فاراخان باوکتە ؟

NK: Yeah. No not Louis Farrakhan, Louis Kahn.

نثانیال خان: بەڵێ، لویس فاراخان نا، لویس خان

Man: Louis Kahn, yes!

لویس خان، ڕاستە

(Laughter)

پێکەنین

Man: Your father, is he alive?

هێشتا باوکت زیندووە؟

NK: No, he's been dead for 25 years.

نەخێر، ٢٥ ساڵ لەمەوبەر کۆچی دوایی کرد

Man: Very pleased to welcome you back.

خۆشحاڵم بە گەڕانەوەت

NK: Thank you.

سوپاست دەکەم

NK: He never saw it finished, Pop.

تەواوکردنی ئەم باڵەخانەیەی نەبینی

No, he never saw this.

بە تەواوکراوی نەیبینی

Shamsul Wares: It was almost impossible, building for a country like ours.

سامویل وریس: درووستکردنی باڵە خانە لە وڵاتێکی وەک ئەمەی ئێمە زۆر ئەستەم بوو

In 30, 50 years back, it was nothing, only paddy fields,

لە پێش ٥٠ ساڵ جگە لە کێڵگە، هیچ شتێکی ترمان نەبوو

and since we invited him here,

وە لەو کاتەوەی کە بانگهێشتمان کرد بۆ ئێرە

he felt that he has got a responsibility.

هەستی بەوە کرد کە ئەرکێکی لەسەر شانە

He wanted to be a Moses here, he gave us democracy.

ویستی ببێتە ڕزگارکەری ئێرە، دیموکراسییەتی پێ بەخشین

He is not a political man,

ئەو پیاوێکی سیاسی نەبوو

but in this guise he has given us

بەڵام بەو شێوەیە شتێکی بە ئێمە بەخشی

the institution for democracy, from where we can rise.

ڕێکخراوێک بۆ دیموکراسییەت لە شارەکەمان، ئا لێرەوە دەتوانین ڕی بکەین و گەشە بکەین

In that way it is so relevant.

لەم لایەنەوە پەیوەندییەکی بەهێز دەبینین

He didn't care for how much money this country has,

هیچ گرنگییەکی بە دەوڵەمەندی ئەم شارە نەدا

or whether he would be able to ever finish this building,

یاخود هیچ گرنگی بەو بیرۆکەیە نەدا کە نەتوانێت باڵەخانەکە تەواو بکات

but somehow he has been able to do it, build it, here.

بەڵام بە شێوەیەک لە شیوەکان هەر سەرکەوتوبوو لە درووستکردنی

And this is the largest project he has got in here, the poorest country in the world.

ئەمە گەورەترین پڕۆژەیە کە لە هەژارترین وڵاتدا بەدەستی هێناوە

NK: It cost him his life.

نثانیال خان: وە هەموو ژیانی خۆی تێ چوو

SW: Yeah, he paid. He paid his life for this,

بەڵێ، هەموو ژیانی خۆی لە پێناویدا دانا

and that is why he is great and we'll remember him.

لەبەر ئەوە زۆر گەورەیە لامان، هەموومان یادی دەکەینەوە

But he was also human.

هەروەها مرۆڤ دۆستیش بوو

Now his failure to satisfy the family life,

بەڵام لە ڕازی کردنی خێزانەکەیدا سەرکەوتوو نەبووە

is an inevitable association of great people.

هەر ئەوەش وا دەکات کە بکرێتە ڕیزی کەسە گەورەکانەوە

But I think his son will understand this,

بەڵام وا هەست دەکەم کە کوڕەکەی لەمە تێ دەگات

and will have no sense of grudge,

وە هیچ هەست بە حەسوودی ناکات لەو بارەیەوە

or sense of being neglected, I think.

یاخود فەرامۆشی ناکات

He cared in a very different manner,

ئەو بە شێوازێکی جیاواز گرنگی بە خێزانەکەی داوە

but it takes a lot of time to understand that.

بەڵام دەزانیت کە ئەم ڕێگایە کاتی زۆر دەوێت

In social aspect of his life

لە لایەکی تریشەوە ژیانی کۆمەڵایەتی ئەو

he was just like a child, he was not at all matured.

لە منداڵێک دەچوو کە هەر پێ نەگەیشت

He could not say no to anything,

نەیدەتوانی هیچ شتێک ڕەتکاتەوە

and that is why, that he cannot say no to things,

هەر بەو هۆیەشەوە

we got this building today.

ئەمڕۆ ئەم باڵەخانەیەمان هەیە

You see, only that way you can be able to understand him.

تەنها بەم شێوازە دەتوانن لێی تێ بگەن

There is no other shortcut,

هیچ ڕێگەیەکی تر نی یە، هیچ کورتەیەک نی یە

no other way to really understand him.

ڕێگایەکی کە نی یە بۆ تێگەیشتن لیی

But I think he has given us this building

بەڵام بڕوام بەوە هەیە کە ئەم باڵەخانەیەی بە ئێمە بەخشی

and we feel all the time for him,

وە ئێمەش بەردەوام پێزانینمان هەیە و سوپاسگوزاری ئەوین

that's why, he has given love for us.

بەم شێوەیە خۆسەویستی پێ بەخشین

He could not probably give the right kind of love for you,

وا هەست دەکەم شێوە ڕاستەکەی خۆشەویستی بە تۆ نەبەخشیوە

but for us, he has given the people the right kind of love,

بەڵام بەڵام سۆز و خۆسەویستی ڕاستەقینەی بە ئێمە بەخشی

that is important.

ئەمەش شتێکی گرنگە

You have to understand that.

پێویستە لەوە تێ بگەیت

He had an enormous amount of love,

بڕێکی زۆری لە خۆشەویستی هەبوو

he loved everybody.

هەموو کەسی خۆش دەویست

To love everybody, he sometimes did not see

وە بۆ ئەوەی هەر وا بکات، هەندێ کات

the very closest ones,

نزیکترین کەسەکانی خۆی نەدەبینی

and that is inevitable for men of his stature.

ئەو سیفاتەش هەر لە پیاوی وا چاوەڕوان دەکرێت
