I'm a storyteller,

And I have a habit of asking difficult questions.

It started when I was 10 years old,

and my mother, who was raising six children, had no time for them.

At 14, fed up with my increasingly annoying questions,

she recommended that I begin writing for the local English-language newspaper

to put my questions out to the entire country, she said.

At 17, I was an undercover investigative journalist.

I don't even think my editor knew just how young I was

The men I'd written about wanted to teach me a lesson.

They wanted to shame me and my family.

They spray-painted my name and my family's name

with unspeakable profanities across our front gate

and around our neighborhood.

And they felt that my father, who was a strict man of tradition,

would stop me.

Instead, my father stood in front of me and said,

and so will the world."

And then he got --

And then he got a group of people together and they whitewashed the walls.

I've always wanted my stories to jolt people,

هەمیشە ویستوومە چیرۆکەکانم خەڵک ڕابچلەکێنێت،

to shake them into having difficult conversations.

And I felt that I would be more effective if I did something visual.

And so at 21, I became a documentary filmmaker,

turning my camera onto marginalized communities

on the front lines in war zones,

Pakistan is home to 200 million people.

And with its low levels of literacy,

An effective storyteller speaks to our emotions,

In my country, film had the potential to go beyond cinema.

It could change lives.

The issues that I've always wanted to raise --

I've always wanted to hold up a mirror to society --

they've been driven by my barometer of anger.

And my barometer of anger led me, in 2014, to honor killings.

تووڕەیی بێ شوماری من، لە ٢٠١٤، بۆ کوشتن لەسەر شەرەف، ڕێنیشاندەری کردم.

Honor killings take place in many parts of the world,

کوشتن لەسەر شەرەف لە زۆربەی شوێنە جیاوازەکانی جیهاندا باوە،

where men punish women who transgress rules made by them:

پیاوەکان ژنان سزا دەدەن بە یاسایەکی ڕێگە پێنەدراو کە خۆیان دروستیان کردوە وەک:

women who choose to marry on their own free will;

ژنان بە ئازادی هاوسەرگیری خۆیان هەڵدەبژێرن؛

or women who are looking for a divorce;

یان ژنان بەدوای تەڵاق دا دەگەڕێن؛

or women who are suspected of having illicit relationships.

یان ئەو ژنان گومانیان لێدەکرێت پەیوەندی ناشەرعی هەبووبێت.

In the rest of the world, honor killings would be known as murder.

لە هەموو جیهاندا، تاوانی کوشتن لەسەر شەرەف ناسراوە بە کوشتن.

I always wanted to tell that story from the perspective of a survivor.

هەمیشە دەموویست چیرۆکێکی لەسەر زاری رزگار بووێک بگێرمەوە.

But women do not live to tell their tale

بەڵام ئەم ژنانە ڕزگاریان نابێت ئەگەر چیرۆکی خۆیان بگێرنەوە

and instead end up in unmarked graves.

لەگەڵ ئەمەشدا لە شوێنکی شاراوەو نەزانراو ئەیاننێژن.

So one morning when I was reading the newspaper,

بەیانییەک کاتێک ڕۆژنامەم دەخوێندەوە،

and I read that a young woman had miraculously survived

و تیایدا خوێندمەوە کەوا ژنێکی گەنج مووعجیزە ئاسا ڕزگاری بووە

after being shot in the face by her father and her uncle

دوای ئەوەی لەلایەن باوکی و مامییەوە تەقە لە دەمووچاوی کراوە

because she chose to marry a man out of her free will,

چونکە پیاوێکی بۆ هاوسەرگیری هەڵبژاردووە لە دەرەوەی سنوری ئازادی خۆى.

I knew I had found my storyteller.

زانیم حیکایەتخوانی خۆم دۆزییەوە.

Saba was determined to send her father and her uncle to jail,

سابا بڕیاریدابوو لەسەر ئەوەی باوکی و مامی بخاتە زیندان،

but in the days after leaving the hospital,

بەڵام ڕۆژێک دوای ئەوەی نەخۆشخانەی جێهیشت،

pressure mounted on her to forgive.

فشاری لەسەربوو بۆ ئەوەی بیانبەخشێت.

You see, there was a loophole in the law

دەبینن، دەربازگەیەک لە یاسا هەبوو

that allowed for victims to forgive perpetrators,

کەوا ڕێگەی دەدا قوربانییەکان تاوانبارەکان ببەخشن،

enabling them to avoid jail time.

توانای پێدەدان تا زیندان دوور بخرێنەوە.

And she was told that she would be ostracized

و پێ وترابوو کەوا حاشای لێدەکەن

and her family, her in-laws,

و خێزانەکەی، ماڵە خەزوورانی،

they would all be shunned from the community,

لە کۆمەڵگەش دوور دەخرێتەوە،

because many felt that her father had been well within his right,

چونکە زۆرینە وا هەستیان دەکرد کەوا باوکی لەسەر حەقە،

given her transgression.

سزای لە سنوور دەرچوونی داوە.

She fought on --

ئەو جەنگا--

for months.

بۆ ماوەی چەند مانگێک.

But on the final day in court,

بەڵام کۆتا ڕۆژ لە دادگا،

she gave a statement forgiving them.

لێدوانی بەخشینی پێدان.

As filmmakers, we were devastated,

ئێمە وەک دەرهێنەر، وێران بووین،

because this was not the film that we had set out to make.

چونکە ئەمە فلیمەکە نەبوو کەوا ئێمە پلانمان بۆی دانابوو.

In hindsight, had she pressed charges, fought the case and won,

بە فشار خستنەسەر ژنەکە، کەیسەکە لە بەرژەوەندی تاوانبارەکە کۆتایی پێ هات،

hers would have been an exception.

When such a strong woman is silenced,

what chance did other women have?

And we began to think about using our film

و دەستمان بە بیرکرنەوە سەبارەت بە بەکارهینانی فلیمەکەمان

to change the way people perceived honor killings,

بۆ گۆڕینی تێروانینی خەڵک سەبارەت بە کوشتن لەسەر شەرەف کرد،

to impact the loophole in the law.

And then our film was nominated for an Academy Award,

and honor killings became headline news,

and the prime minister, while sending his congratulations,

offered to host the first screening of the film at his office.

Of course, we jumped at the chance,

بێگومان، هەڵەکەمان قۆستەوە،

because no prime minister in the history of the country had ever done so.

And at the screening,

which was carried live on national television,

he said something that reverberated throughout the country:

"There is no honor in honor killings," he said.

At the Academy Awards in LA,

لە ئاهەنگی خەڵاتەکانی ئۆسکار لە لۆس ئەنجلوس

many of the pundits had written us off,

زۆربەی شارەزایان لەسەر ئێمەیان نووسی،

but we felt that in order for the legislative push to continue,

بەڵام ئێمە هەستمان کرد بۆ ئەوەی بەردەوام بین،

we needed that win.

پێویست بوو خەڵاتەکە ببەینەوە.

And then, my name was announced,

و دواتر. ناوی من دەست نیشان کرا،

and I bounded up the steps in flip-flops, because I didn't expect to be onstage.

And I accepted the statue, telling a billion people watching

و خەڵاتەکەم قبوڵ کرد، بە ملیۆنەها خەڵک ووت

that the prime minister of Pakistan had pledged to change the law,

کەوا سەرۆک وەزیرانی پاکیستان بەڵێنیدابوو یاساکە بگۆڕێت،

because, of course, that's one way of holding the prime minister accountable.

And --

Back home, the Oscar win dominated headline news,

and more people joined the fray,

asking for the loophole in the law to be closed.

And then in October 2016, after months of campaigning,

و دواتر لە تشرینی یەکەمی ساڵی ٢٠١٦ دوای مانگێک لەکەمپەینی پاڵپشتی،

the loophole was indeed closed.

And now men who kill women in the name of honor

و ئێستا ئەو پیاوانەی لە ژێر ناوی شەرەف ژنان دەکوژن

receive life imprisonment.

Yet, the very next day,

لەگەڵ ئەمەشدا، لە ڕۆژانی دواتر،

a woman was killed in the name of honor,

ژنێک لە ژێر ناوی شەرەفدا کوژرا،

and then another and another.

و دواتر هی دیکە وهی تریش.

We had impacted legislation,

کاریگەریمان لەسەر یاسادانان هەبوو،

but that wasn't enough.

بەڵام ئەمە بەس نەبوو.

We needed to take the film and its message to the heartland,

پێویست بوو فلیمەکە بخەینە کار و ئەوە پەیامێکە بۆ ناوجەرگەی وڵات،

to small towns and villages across the country.

بۆ گوند و شارۆچکە بچووکەکان لە سەرانسەری ووڵاتەکەدا.

You see, for me, cinema can play a very positive role

دەبینن، بۆ من، سینەما دەتوانێت ڕۆڵی زۆر ئیجابی بگێرێت

in changing and molding society in a positive direction.

لە گۆڕینی کۆمەڵگەی دواکەوتوو بە ئاڕاستەیەکی باشتر.

But how would we get to these places?

بەڵام ئێمە چۆن بەوە شوێنانە دەگەین؟

How would we get to these small towns and villages?

چۆن دەستمان بەم گوند و شارۆچکە بچووکانە دەگات؟

We built a mobile cinema,

ئێمە سینەمای گەڕۆکمان دروست کرد،

a truck that would roll through the length and breadth of the country,

بارهەڵگرێک کە بە دڕێژی و پانی وڵاتەکەدا دەسوڕایەوە،

that would stop in small towns and villages.

لە گوند و شارۆچکە بچووکەکان دەوەستا.

We outfitted it with a large screen that would light up the night sky,

کەلوپەلەکانمان لەگەڵ شاشەیەکی گەورە کە ئاسمانی شەوی تاریکی ڕووناک دەکردەوە،

and we called it "Look But With Love."

و پێمان دەگوت" سەیرکە بەڵام بە خۆشەویستی."

It would give the community an opportunity to come together

ئەمە هەلی بە کۆمەڵگە بەخشی بەیەکەوە بێن

and watch films in the evening.

We knew we could attract men and children in the mobile cinema.

زانیمان دەتوانین سەرنجی پیاوان و منداڵان لە ڕێگەی سینەمای گەڕۆکدا ڕابکێشین.

They would come out and watch.

ئەوان دەهاتنەدەر و سەیریان دەکرد.

But what about women?

بەڵام چی سەبارەت ژنان؟

In these small, rural communities that are segregated,

لەم کۆمەڵگە بچوک و گوندنیشینانەدا کە لە ڕووی ڕەگەزەوە جیاکراوە.

how would we get women to come out?

چۆن هانی ژنان بدەین بێنە دەرەوە و بینەر بن؟

We had to work with prevailing cultural norms in order to do so,

بۆ ئەمەش پێویست بوو ئێمە کار لەسەر بنچینەی کلتورە باوەکان بکەین،

and so we built a cinema inside the cinema,

و بۆیە سینەمامان لە ناو سینەما دروست کرد،

outfitting it with seats and a screen where women could go inside and watch

without fearing

or being embarrassed

or harassment.

We began to introduce everyone

to films that opened up their minds to competing worldviews,

encouraging children to build critical thinking

هانی منداڵان بدڕێت بیڕۆکەی ڕەخنەییان هەبێت

so that they could ask questions.

And we expanded our scope beyond honor killings,

و ئێمە تیشکمان خستە سەر تاوانی کوشتن لەسەر شەرەف

talking about income inequality,

the environment,

talking about ethnic relations, religious tolerance and compassion.

And inside, for women,

we showed them films in which they were heroes, not victims,

and we told them how they could navigate the court system, the police system,

telling them where they could seek refuge

where they could go and get help.

We were surprised that we were welcomed in so many of the places

سەرمان سوڕاما لەوەی لە زۆربەی شوێنانەی

that we went to.

ئێمە چووێن پێشوازیمان لێ کرا.

Many of the towns had never seen television or social media,

زۆربەی شارۆچکەکان هەرگیز بە تەلەفیزیۆن یان تۆڕی کۆمەڵایەتی ئاشنا نەببوون،

and they were eager for their children to learn.

و بە بەرۆش بوون بۆ ئەوەی منداڵەکانیان فێربن.

But there was also pushback and blowback

with the ideas that we were bringing with us.

Two members of our mobile cinema team resigned

دوو کەس لە ئەندامانی تیمی سینەما گەڕۆکەکەمان بەهۆی

because of threats from villages.

هەڕەشەی هەندێک لە گوندەکان دەستیان لە کار کێشایەوە.

And in one of the villages that we were screening in,

و لە یەکێک لە گوندەکان کە نمایشی تێدا دەکرد،

they shut it down

شاشەکەیان کوژاندەوە

and said they didn't want the women to know about their rights.

و گوتیان نایانەوێت ژنان سەبارەت بە مافەکانیان بزانن.

But on the flip side, in another village when a screening was shut down,

بەڵام لەبەرامبەر ئەمەشدا، لە گوندێکی دیکە کاتێک ڕێگریان لە نمایش کردن کرد.

a plainclothes policeman got up and ordered it back on,

پۆلیسێک بە جلی مەدەنی فەرمانی کردبوو پێبکەنەوە،

and stood by, protecting our team,

لە پاڵ تیمەکەمان وەستا و پارێزگاری لێ کردین،

telling everyone that it was his duty to expose the young minds

بە هەموو کەسێکی گوت ئەمە ئەرکی سەرشانی ئەوە

to an alternative worldview and to this content.

بۆ بوون بە ئەلتەرناتیڤی دنیابینی و چێژوەرگرتنیش.

He was an ordinary hero.

ئەوە پاڵەوانێکی ڕاسگۆ بوو.

But we've come across so many of these heroes on our journey.

بەڵام بەدرێژای گەشتەکەمان چاومان بە زۆر پاڵەوان کەوت.

In another town, where the men said that only they could watch

لە شارۆچکەیەکی دیکە، پیاوەکان دەیانگوت تەنها ئەوان لەوێ دەتوانن سەیر بکەن

and the women had to stay home,

و ژانان پێویستە لە ماڵەوە بمێنەوە،

a community elder got up,

بەتەمەنەکان هەستانە سەر پێ،

got a group of people together, had a discussion,

گروپێکمان بەیەکەوە دروست کرد، گفتوگۆمان کرد،

and then both men and women sat down to watch together.

و پاشان ژنان و پیاوان بەیەکەوە دانیشتن پێکەوە سەیریان دەکرد.

We are documenting what we are doing.

دیکۆمێنتی ئەوەمان کردوە کە ئەنجاممانداوە.

We talk to people.

قسە بۆ خەڵک دەکەین

We adapt.

خۆمان دەگونجێنین.

We change the lineup of films.

لایەنگری فلیمەکانمان گۆڕی.

When we show men films

کاتێک فلیمەکانمان پێشانی پیاوەکان دەدا

that show perpetrators of violence behind bars,

کەوا پیشاندانی تاوانکرەکان توندوتیژی پشت بارەکان،

we want to hit home the fact that if men are violent,

دەمانویست لەو ماڵە بدەین کە پیاوێکی توندوتیژی لێبیت،

there will be repercussions.

دەنگ دانەوەی دەبێت.

But we also show films where men are seen as championing women,

بەڵام هەروەها فلیمەکانمان پیشانی پیاوەکان دەدا وەک ئەوەی ژنان پاڵەوانبن.

because we want to encourage them to take on those roles.

چونکە هانمان دەدەن ئەو یاسایانە لە ناو ببن.

For women, when we show them films in which they are heads of state

بۆ ژنان، کاتێک فلیمان پیشاندەدان کەوا ئەوان سەرۆکی هەموو شتێکن

or where they are lawyers and doctors and in leadership positions,

یان شوێنی ئەوان پارێزەرن و دکتۆرەن و لە شوێنی ڕابەرایەتی کردن،

we talk to them and encourage them to step into those roles.

هانماندان بۆ ئەوەی هەنگاویک لەناو ئەوە یاسایەنە بنێن.

We are changing the way people in these villages interact,

شێوازی هەڵسوکەوتی ئەو خەڵکەمان گۆڕی کە لە گوندەکان دەژین .

and we're taking our learnings into other places.

و قسەمان لەسەر فێربوونەکانمان دەکرد لە شوینەکانی دیکە.

Recently, a group contacted us and wants to take our mobile cinema

لەم دوایانەدا، گروپێک پەیوەندی پێوەکردین و دەیانوسییت سینەما جوڵاوەکەمان ببەین

to Bangladesh and Syria,

بۆ بنگلادش و سوریا،

and we're sharing our learnings with them.

We feel it's really important

to take what we are doing and spread it across the world.

In small towns and villages across Pakistan,

لە شارۆچەکە بچووکەکان و گوندەکان هەموو پاکیستان،

men are changing the way they interact with women,

پیاوەکان ئەو شێوازی هەڵسوکەوتیان لەگەڵ ژنەکان گۆڕی.

children are changing the way they see the world,
