I'm a storyteller,

And I have a habit of asking difficult questions.

It started when I was 10 years old,

and my mother, who was raising six children, had no time for them.

여섯 명의 아이들을 키우던 저희 엄마는 질문에 답해 줄 시간이 없었어요

At 14, fed up with my increasingly annoying questions,

14살 때, 저의 짜증나는 질문들이 늘어나자,

she recommended that I begin writing for the local English-language newspaper

엄마는 파키스탄에 있는 지역 영자신문에 글을 써보라고

in Pakistan,

권유하셨죠.

to put my questions out to the entire country, she said.

At 17, I was an undercover investigative journalist.

I don't even think my editor knew just how young I was

when I sent in a story that named and shamed

some very powerful people.

The men I'd written about wanted to teach me a lesson.

They wanted to shame me and my family.

They spray-painted my name and my family's name

with unspeakable profanities across our front gate

and around our neighborhood.

And they felt that my father, who was a strict man of tradition,

would stop me.

Instead, my father stood in front of me and said,

And then he got --

And then he got a group of people together and they whitewashed the walls.

I've always wanted my stories to jolt people,

전 항상 제 이야기가 사람들에게 충격을 주길 원해요.

to shake them into having difficult conversations.

And I felt that I would be more effective if I did something visual.

또 전 뭔가 시각적인 것을 만들면 좀 더 효과적일 수 있을 거 같았어요.

And so at 21, I became a documentary filmmaker,

그래서 전 21살 때, 다큐멘터리 영화제작자가 됩니다.

turning my camera onto marginalized communities

저는 전쟁 최전방에 있는 소외된 공동체로

on the front lines in war zones,

제 카메라를 돌렸습니다.

eventually returning home to Pakistan,

where I wanted to document violence against women.

Pakistan is home to 200 million people.

And with its low levels of literacy,

film can change the way people perceive issues.

An effective storyteller speaks to our emotions,

elicits empathy and compassion,

and forces us to look at things differently.

In my country, film had the potential to go beyond cinema.

저희 나라에서, 영화는 영화 이상으로 나아갈 수 있는 잠재력이 있습니다.

It could change lives.

삶을 변화시킬 수 있죠.

The issues that I've always wanted to raise --

전 항상 사회를 비추는 거울을 들고 싶었습니다.

I've always wanted to hold up a mirror to society --

제가 항상 다루길 바랐던 문제들은

they've been driven by my barometer of anger.

제 분노의 지표에 의해 이끌려왔죠.

And my barometer of anger led me, in 2014, to honor killings.

그리고 제 분노는 2014년 명예 살인이라는 주제에 다다릅니다.

Honor killings take place in many parts of the world,

명예살인은 세계 많은 곳에서 일어나고 있습니다.

where men punish women who transgress rules made by them:

남성에 의해 만들어진 규칙을 어긴 여성을 남성들이 처벌합니다.

women who choose to marry on their own free will;

그들의 자유의지대로 결혼을 선택한 여성들이라든지,

or women who are looking for a divorce;

혹은 이혼을 원하는 여성이거나,

or women who are suspected of having illicit relationships.

사회 통념에 어긋난 관계가 의심되는 여성들을 처벌합니다.

In the rest of the world, honor killings would be known as murder.

다른 나라에서는, 명예살인이 살인으로 알려져 있을 겁니다.

I always wanted to tell that story from the perspective of a survivor.

전 언제나 생존자의 관점으로 이 이야길 다루고 싶었습니다.

But women do not live to tell their tale

그러나 이야길 전해줄 여성들은 살아있지 않죠.

and instead end up in unmarked graves.

대신 표시되지 않은 무덤만 남았죠.

So one morning when I was reading the newspaper,

하루는 제가 아침 신문을 읽고 있었을 때,

and I read that a young woman had miraculously survived

한 어린 소녀가 그녀의 아버지와 삼촌에 의해 얼굴에 총상을 입은 뒤

after being shot in the face by her father and her uncle

기적적으로 살아남은 기사를 접하게 되었습니다.

because she chose to marry a man out of her free will,

그녀가 자유의지대로 택한 남성과 결혼했기 때문이죠.

I knew I had found my storyteller.

전 그녀가 제가 찾던 이야기의 주인공이란 걸 알았습니다.

Saba was determined to send her father and her uncle to jail,

사바는 그녀의 아버지와 삼촌을 감옥에 보내기로 결심했습니다.

but in the days after leaving the hospital,

그러나 병원을 떠난 며칠 후,

pressure mounted on her to forgive.

그녀한테 용서를 해야한다는 압박이 생기기 시작했죠.

You see, there was a loophole in the law

보이시죠, 여기 희생자들에게

that allowed for victims to forgive perpetrators,

범인들을 용서할 수 있도록 해서 감옥에 들어가는 걸 피하게 하는

enabling them to avoid jail time.

법의 허점이 있었습니다.

And she was told that she would be ostracized

그리고 그녀에게 들은 이야기는 그녀가 쫓겨날 것이고

and her family, her in-laws,

그녀의 가족과 시댁 식구들은 지역사회로부터

they would all be shunned from the community,

모두 따돌림을 당할 것이라는 거였죠.

because many felt that her father had been well within his right,

given her transgression.

그녀를 벌했다고 느꼈기 때문이죠.

She fought on --

for months.

But on the final day in court,

she gave a statement forgiving them.

As filmmakers, we were devastated,

because this was not the film that we had set out to make.

In hindsight, had she pressed charges, fought the case and won,

hers would have been an exception.

When such a strong woman is silenced,

what chance did other women have?

And we began to think about using our film

저희는 우리의 영화를 통해 명예살인에 대한

to change the way people perceived honor killings,

사람들의 인식을 바꾸고, 법의 허점에 영향을 미칠

to impact the loophole in the law.

방법을 생각하기 시작했습니다.

And then our film was nominated for an Academy Award,

그리고 나서 저희 영화는 아카데미상 후보에 올랐고

and honor killings became headline news,

명예살인은 각종 뉴스의 헤드라인이 되었고,

and the prime minister, while sending his congratulations,

총리는 축하 메세지를 보내어

offered to host the first screening of the film at his office.

그의 사무실에서 첫 상영을 하도록 저희를 초청을 하였습니다.

Of course, we jumped at the chance,

물론, 저희는 그 기회를 잡았죠.

because no prime minister in the history of the country had ever done so.

And at the screening,

which was carried live on national television,

he said something that reverberated throughout the country:

"There is no honor in honor killings," he said.

At the Academy Awards in LA,

로스엔젤레스에서 열린 아카데미 시상식에서,

many of the pundits had written us off,

많은 전문가들이 저희에 대해 다뤘으나,

but we felt that in order for the legislative push to continue,

입법추진을 계속하기 위해선 꼭 수상할 필요가 있다고 느꼈습니다.

we needed that win.

And then, my name was announced,

그리고 나서, 제 이름이 호명되었고,

and I bounded up the steps in flip-flops, because I didn't expect to be onstage.

전 쪼리를 신은 채 계단을 올랐죠. 무대에 오를 거라고 생각하지 않았거든요.

(Laughter)

And I accepted the statue, telling a billion people watching

수상을 하고, 시청하고 있는 수 십억명의 사람들에게 말하길

that the prime minister of Pakistan had pledged to change the law,

파키스탄의 총리가 법을 개정하겠다고 약속했다고 전했죠.

because, of course, that's one way of holding the prime minister accountable.

왜냐하면, 물론 그게 총리가 책임을 지도록 하는 방법이었으니까요.

(Laughter)

And --

Back home, the Oscar win dominated headline news,

집으로 돌아오니, 오스카 수상은 뉴스 헤드라인들을 장식했고,

and more people joined the fray,

더 많은 사람들이 이 싸움에 합류했습니다.

asking for the loophole in the law to be closed.

법의 허점이 폐지되길 요구하였죠.

And then in October 2016, after months of campaigning,

그리고나서 2016년 10월, 캠페인이 있고 수 개월 뒤,

the loophole was indeed closed.

그 허점은 정말 폐지되었습니다.

And now men who kill women in the name of honor

그리고 이제 명예의 이름으로 여성을 죽이는 남성들은

receive life imprisonment.

무기징역을 선고받습니다.

Yet, the very next day,

a woman was killed in the name of honor,

한 여성이 명예살인을 당했죠.

and then another and another.

그리고 나서 또 다른 여성이 계속해서요.

We had impacted legislation,

우린 법률에 영향을 끼쳤지만,

but that wasn't enough.

그걸로 충분하지 않았죠.

We needed to take the film and its message to the heartland,

저흰 영화와 그 메세지를 심장부로 가져갈 필요가 있었습니다.

to small towns and villages across the country.

온 나라의 작은 마을들 구석구석으로요.

You see, for me, cinema can play a very positive role

여러분도 보시다시피, 제겐, 영화란 사회를 긍정적으로 변화시키고

in changing and molding society in a positive direction.

디자인하는데 매우 긍정적인 역할을 할 수 있다고 생각합니다.

But how would we get to these places?

그러나 어떻게 이들 장소에 다다를 수 있을까요?

How would we get to these small towns and villages?

어떻게 하면 작은 마을 구석구석에 다다를 수 있을까요?

We built a mobile cinema,

저흰 움직이는 영화관을 만들었습니다.

a truck that would roll through the length and breadth of the country,

트럭 하나가 전국 구석구석을 돌아다니면서

that would stop in small towns and villages.

작은 마을들을 일일이 찾아가 멈추는 거죠.

We outfitted it with a large screen that would light up the night sky,

저흰 트럭에 밤하늘을 비출법한 큰 스크린 하나를 만들어놓고,

and we called it "Look But With Love."

"사랑으로 바라봐."라고 불렀죠.

It would give the community an opportunity to come together

이는 지역사회가 모두 함께 모여 저녁에 영화를 볼 수 있는

and watch films in the evening.

기회를 제공할 것입니다.

We knew we could attract men and children in the mobile cinema.

저흰 남성들과 아이들이 모바일 시네마에 관심을 가질 걸 알았죠.

They would come out and watch.

그들은 나와서 보려고 할 겁니다.

But what about women?

그러면 여성들은요?

In these small, rural communities that are segregated,

이런 작고, 분리되어 있는 도시 밖의 지역사회에서

how would we get women to come out?

어떻게 하면 여성들이 나올 수 있을까요?

We had to work with prevailing cultural norms in order to do so,

저흰 그렇게 하기 위해선 기존의 문화 규범과 협력해야했습니다.

and so we built a cinema inside the cinema,

영화관 안에 영화관을 지어서,

outfitting it with seats and a screen where women could go inside and watch

스크린과 좌석을 배치하여 여성들이 안으로 들어와서

without fearing

두려움 없이

or being embarrassed

혹 당황스러워하지 않고

or harassment.

위협없이 볼 수 있도록 했죠.

We began to introduce everyone

모든 사람들에게 영화를 소개함으로써

to films that opened up their minds to competing worldviews,

그들의 마음을 열어 세상의 관점들과 싸우게 하고

encouraging children to build critical thinking

아이들로 하여금 비판적인 사고를 할 수 있도록 독려하여

so that they could ask questions.

질문을 할 수 있도록 했습니다.

And we expanded our scope beyond honor killings,

그리고 저흰 명예살인을 넘어서,

talking about income inequality,

소득 불공평,

the environment,

환경,

talking about ethnic relations, religious tolerance and compassion.

민족 관계, 종교적 관용 및 동정심으로 확대해나갔습니다.

And inside, for women,

그리고 여성을 위해서 안에서는

we showed them films in which they were heroes, not victims,

그들이 희생자가 아닌 영웅인 영화를 보여주었고,

and we told them how they could navigate the court system, the police system,

그들에게 법정 및 경찰 시스템을 어떻게 알아갈 수 있는지 말해줬습니다.

educating them about their rights,

그들의 권리에 대해 교육하고,

telling them where they could seek refuge

만약 그들이 가정 폭력의 희생자라면,

if they were victims of domestic violence,

도움을 얻기 위해 갈 수 있는

where they could go and get help.

안식처를 알려주었습니다.

We were surprised that we were welcomed in so many of the places

저희가 가는 곳마다 환영해주는 것에 놀랐습니다.

that we went to.

Many of the towns had never seen television or social media,

많은 마을들이 그런 텔레비전이나 소셜 미디어를 본적이 없었고,

and they were eager for their children to learn.

그들은 아이들이 배우길 갈망했습니다.

But there was also pushback and blowback

그러나 그곳엔 저희가 가져온

with the ideas that we were bringing with us.

Two members of our mobile cinema team resigned

모바일 시네마 팀원 두 명이 사임했었죠.

because of threats from villages.

마을들로부터 위협이 있었거든요.

And in one of the villages that we were screening in,

they shut it down

and said they didn't want the women to know about their rights.

그들은 여성들이 그들의 권리를 알길 원치 않는다 말했죠.

But on the flip side, in another village when a screening was shut down,

그러나 반대로, 다른 마을에선 상영관이 문을 닫자,

a plainclothes policeman got up and ordered it back on,

사복을 입은 경찰관이 나타나 다시 오픈하라고 명령했습니다.

and stood by, protecting our team,

telling everyone that it was his duty to expose the young minds

to an alternative worldview and to this content.

He was an ordinary hero.

But we've come across so many of these heroes on our journey.

In another town, where the men said that only they could watch

and the women had to stay home,

집에 있어야 한다고 했죠.

a community elder got up,

got a group of people together, had a discussion,

사람들을 모아서 논의를 했습니다.

and then both men and women sat down to watch together.

그리고나서 여성과 남성 모두 함께 앉아 영화를 볼 수 있게 하였죠.

We are documenting what we are doing.

저희가 하고 있는 걸 촬영하고 있었습니다.

We talk to people.

저흰 사람들에게 말합니다.

We adapt.

저흰 적응합니다.

We change the lineup of films.

저흰 영화의 라인업을 바꿉니다.

When we show men films

저희가 남성들에게 영화에서

that show perpetrators of violence behind bars,

교도소에 수감된 폭력 가해자들을 보여줄 때,

we want to hit home the fact that if men are violent,

남성들이 폭력적이면 가정에 영향이 있을거라는

there will be repercussions.

사실을 알려주고 싶습니다.

But we also show films where men are seen as championing women,

그러나 저흰 또한 남성들이 여성 역할을 하는 영화를 보여줬어요.

because we want to encourage them to take on those roles.

남성들도 그런 역할을 맡도록 격려하고 싶었기 때문이죠.

For women, when we show them films in which they are heads of state

여성들을 위해, 해당 주의 지도자, 변호사, 의사, 혹은 리더의 자리에

or where they are lawyers and doctors and in leadership positions,

있는 사람들에게 영화를 보여주게 되면,

we talk to them and encourage them to step into those roles.

그들에게 그들이 그 역할을 할 수 있도록 독려합니다.

We are changing the way people in these villages interact,

저희는 마을 사람들이 서로 소통하는 방식을 변화시키고 있습니다.

and we're taking our learnings into other places.

또한 저희가 배운 것들을 다른 곳으로 전달하고 있습니다.

Recently, a group contacted us and wants to take our mobile cinema

최근, 한 그룹이 저희에게 연락하여 모바일 시네마를 방글라데시와 시리아에

to Bangladesh and Syria,

상영하길 원한다고 하였습니다.

and we're sharing our learnings with them.

그래서 저희가 배운 걸 공유하고 있죠.

We feel it's really important

to take what we are doing and spread it across the world.

세상에 널리 퍼뜨리는 것이 매우 중요하다고 느낍니다.

In small towns and villages across Pakistan,

men are changing the way they interact with women,

children are changing the way they see the world,

아이들은 세상을 바라보는 방식을 변화시키고 있습니다.

one village at a time, through cinema.
