I want to start today -- talk about the structure of a polypeptide.

I get a lot of people asking me, in terms of "Lost," you know,

You know, it's usually followed by,

Why so many mysteries?

What is it about mystery that I seem to be drawn to?

왜 미스테리가 이렇게 많을까요? 왜 제 작품에는 미스테리가 많을까요?

And I was thinking about this, what to talk about at TED.

전 오늘 TED에 나와서 뭘 말해야할까 한참 고민했습니다

When I talked to the kind rep from TED,

제가 TED의 친절한 대표분을 만나 얘기를 나누다가

and I said, "Listen, you know, what should I talk about?"

"제가 뭘 말해야 합니까?" 라고 묻자

He said, "Don't worry about it. Just be profound."

그 분은 "걱정마시고 심오한 것만 말씀하세요" 라고 하더군요.

(Laughter)

(웃음) 그래서 지금 상당히 편하게 있는 겁니다.

And I took enormous comfort in that.

So thank you, if you're here.

I was trying to think, what do I talk about? Good question.

전 뭘 말해야 될지 상당히 고민했습니다. 이건 좋은 고민이죠.

Why do I do so much stuff that involves mystery?

왜 제가 많은 것들에 미스테리를 채워 넣을까요? 전 그 이유를 찾아봤습니다.

And I started trying to figure it out.

And I started thinking about why do I do any of what I do,

제가 하는 일들을 왜 하고 있는가 생각해보다가

저희 할아버지가 떠올랐습니다.

and I started thinking about my grandfather.

전 제 할아버지를 사랑했습니다. 외할아버지이신 해리 켈빈이란 분이십니다.

I loved my grandfather.

Harry Kelvin was his name, my mother's father.

He died in 1986. He was an amazing guy.

1986년에 돌아가셨고요. 정말 대단한 분이셨죠.

And one of the reasons he was amazing:

그리고 정말 대단하셨던 이유는

After World War II, he began an electronics company.

세계 2차 대전이 끝나고 당신께서는 전자기기 회사에 들어가셨어요.

He started selling surplus parts, kits, to schools and stuff.

그분은 남은 부품이나 키트들을 학교에 파셨죠.

So he had this incredible curiosity.

그리고 호기심이 정말 많으셨습니다.

As a kid, I saw him come over to me

with radios and telephones and all sorts of things.

제가 어릴때 그분은 제게 라디오와 전화기 등등 많은 걸 가지고 오셨지요.

And he'd open them up, he'd unscrew them and reveal the inner workings --

그리고 그걸 열고, 분해하셔서 내부 작동 원리를 알려주셨죠.

which many of us, I'm sure, take for granted.

많은 사람들이 당연하게 여길지도 모르죠.

But it's an amazing gift to give a kid.

하지만 그건 어린 아이에겐 정말 놀라운 선물이었습니다

To open up this thing and show how it works

물건들을 열어서 어떻게 작동하는지 그리고 왜 작동하며 이 물건이 무엇인지 알려주는 게 말이죠.

and why it works and what it is.

He was the ultimate deconstructor, in many ways.

그 분은 정말 여러모로 대단하신 분해광이셨습니다.

And my grandfather was a kind of guy who would not only take things apart,

but he got me interested in all sorts of different odd crafts,

제게 잔기술들에 관해서 흥미를 주셨습니다

like, you know, printing, like the letter press.

I'm obsessed with printing.

I'm obsessed with silk-screening and bookbinding and box making.

전 실크스크린도 좋아했고 제본도 좋아했고 상자 만들기도 좋아했습니다.

When I was a kid, I was always, like, taking apart boxes and stuff.

어릴 적, 저는 박스와 물건들을 분해하는 걸 좋아했습니다

And last night in the hotel, I took apart the Kleenex box.

어제 밤 호텔에서 전 크리넥스 상자를 분해했습니다.

I was just looking at it. And I'm telling you --

전 그냥 쳐다보기만 했습니다. 그리고 말씀드리는데 여기엔 -- 아니 이건 정말 멋진 물건입니다.

(Laughter)

It's a beautiful thing. I swear to God.

정말입니다. 제 말은 박스를 보면 이게 어떻게 작용하는지 알 수 있다는 겁니다.

I mean, when you look at the box and you sort of see how it works.

리브스씨가 계신데 몇 년전 도서 박람회에서 만났었죠. 팝업북을 만들고 계셨죠.

Rives is here, and I met him years ago at a book fair;

he does pop-up books.

And I'm obsessed with engineering of paper.

저도 종이 공작에 완전히 빠져있었습니다.

The scoring of it, the printing of it,

하지만 이 안엔 절단면이나 인쇄된 부분이나 접착된 부분들,

where the thing gets glued, the registration marks for the ink.

또 등록 상표가 있죠. 전 그냥 상자들이 좋습니다.

I just love boxes.

My grandfather was the guy

제 할아버지는 제가

who kind of got me into all sorts of these things.

이런 걸 좋아하도록 만드신 분이셨죠

He would also supply me with tools.

또 제게 많은 물건들을 사주시기도 해주셨죠.

He was this amazing encourager -- this patron, sort of, to make stuff.

그분은 정말로 좋은 지원자셨습니다.

And he got me a Super 8 camera when I was 10 years old.

제가 10살 때 제 할아버지께서는 제게 8mm슈퍼카메라를 주셨습니다

And in 1976, that was sort of an anomaly,

1976년이었으니 그건 정말 비정상적인 일이었죠

to be a 10-year-old kid that had access to a camera.

And you know, he was so generous; I couldn't believe it.

He wasn't doing it entirely without some manipulation.

I mean, I would call him, and I'd be like,

(Laughter)

And, you know, my grandmother was the greatest.

저희 할머니는 최고셨습니다.

Because she'd be like, you know -- she'd get on the phone.

그분은 전화를 받고 나서 이렇게 말씀하셨죠.

She'd be like, "Harry, it's better than the drugs.

“여보 사줍시다. 애가 마약을 하겠다는 것도 아니잖아요.”

She was fantastic.

정말 대단하신 분이셨어요 (웃음)

So I found myself getting this stuff, thanks to her assist,

그렇게 해서 전 카메라를 받을수 있었죠

and suddenly, you know,

할머니께 감사드립니다, 그리고 어느 날 갑자기

I had a synthesizer when I was 14 years old --

14살인 저에게 그 카메라는 엄청난 자극이 되었습니다

this kind of stuff.

And it let me make things, which, to me, was sort of the dream.

He sort of humored my obsession to other things too, like magic.

The thing is, we'd go to this magic store in New York City

called Lou Tannen's Magic.

It was this great magic store.

It was a crappy little building in Midtown,

but you'd be in the elevator, the elevator would open --

엘리베이터를 타야하지만, 엘리베이터 문이 열리면

아마 아주 작은 마술 상점이 보일겁니다. 마술 상점에 계신거죠

there'd be this little, small magic store.

You'd be in the magic store. And it was a magical place.

그곳은 정말 놀라운 공간입니다

전 이런 마술들을 배웠습니다. 여길 보시죠.

So I got all these magic tricks. Here. I'll show you.

이런 거죠. 아시죠?

This is the kind of thing. So it would be like, you know.

Which is good, but now I can't move.

좋은 트릭이긴 하지만 움직이면 안되죠

Now, I have to do the rest of the thing like this.

정리를 해야하는데 이런 방법으로 해야하죠

I'm like, "Oh, wow. Look at my computer over there!"

So one of the things that I bought at the magic store was this:

Tannen's Mystery Magic Box.

테넌의 미스터리 매직 박스

The premise behind the Mystery Magic Box was the following:

이 상자에 이런 말이 적혀있는데요

15 dollars buys you 50 dollars worth of magic.

'15달러로 50달러 가치의 마술을 얻으세요'

Which is a savings.

정말 경제적이죠. (웃음)

(Laughter)

Now, I bought this decades ago and I'm not kidding.

이 물건은 몇십년전에 산겁니다 정말로요

If you look at this, you'll see it's never been opened.

보시면 아시겠지만 이건 절대 열지 않았습니다

But I've had this forever.

그리고 영원히 열지 않을거고요

Now, I was looking at this,

it was in my office, as it always is, on the shelf,

전 이 상자를 사무실 선반위에 올려놓고 쳐다보죠

그리고 왜 제가 저걸 안열어봤을까 생각했었죠

and I was thinking, why have I not opened this?

And why have I kept it?

'내가 왜 저걸 아직도 갖고 있지? 난 주머니쥐가 아닌데. 난 다 챙기지 않는다고.'

Because I'm not a pack rat.

I don't keep everything,

but for some reason I haven't opened this box.

하지만 제가 이 상자를 열지 않은 이유가 있을겁니다

And I felt like there was a key to this, somehow,

꼭 이유가 있을 것 같이 생각했죠

in talking about something at TED that I haven't discussed before,

제가 전에 말하지 않았던걸 TED에서 말하고 있는데

and bored people elsewhere.

벌써 지친 사람들도 계시군요

So I thought, maybe there's something with this.

저는 이 안에 뭔가 있을까란 의문이 생기고 고민을 해봤습니다

And there was this giant question mark.

그리고 앞에는 커다란 물음표가 있죠. 전 이 디자인이 정말 마음에 듭니다.

I love the design, for what it's worth, of this thing.

그리고 다시 왜 전 이걸 열지 않았나 생각해봤습니다

And I started thinking, why haven't I opened it?

그리고 제가 이걸 열지 않은 이유는 제게 엄청난 의미가 있었기 때문이란걸 알았습니다

And I realized that I haven't opened it

because it represents something important -- to me.

이 상자는 제게 할아버지를 떠오르게 했습니다

It represents my grandfather.

Am I allowed to cry at TED?

TED에서 울어도 되나요? 왜냐면-- 아 울진 않을거에요. 근데-- (웃음)

Because -- no, I'm not going to cry.

(Laughter)

But --

(Laughter)

The thing is that it represents infinite possibility.

이 물건은 무한한 가능성을 보여줍니다

It represents hope. It represents potential.

희망이 들어있고 잠재력이 있습니다

And what I love about this box,

그리고 제가 이 상자를 좋아하는 이유는

and what I realize I sort of do in whatever it is that I do,

제가 하려는 일들은 다 이 안에서 떠오르기 때문입니다

is I find myself drawn to infinite possibility,

제 스스로 무한한 가능성에 빠져들고 잠재력을 느끼는거죠

that sense of potential.

And I realize that mystery is the catalyst for imagination.

그리고 저는 미스터리는 상상의 자극제라는걸 깨달았습니다

Now, it's not the most ground-breaking idea,

이건 그렇게 대단한 생각이 아닙니다

but when I started to think that maybe there are times

하지만 제가 미스터리가 지식보다 중요하다고 생각되는

when mystery is more important than knowledge.

순간들이 있을 거라 생각하면 전 그 상상에 빠져듭니다

I started getting interested in this.

And so I started thinking about "Lost" and the stuff that we do,

먼저 지금 진행되는 로스트에 대해 말씀 드릴까 합니다

저는 바로 이런 생각이 들더군요 '이럴수가 내가 하는 모든 일에는 미스터리 박스가 있어!'

and I realized, oh my God, mystery boxes are everywhere in what I do!

로스트를 제작하는 과정에서 같이 제작을 맡았던 데이먼 린들로프와

In the creation of "Lost," Damon Lindelof and I,

who created the show with me,

저는 이 시리즈를 제작하면서 말그대로 힘든 일들을 했습니다

we were basically tasked with creating this series

that we had very little time to do.

시간이 정말 짧았거든요. 11주 반 동안

We had 11 and a half weeks

to write it, cast it, crew it, shoot it, cut it, post it, turn in a two-hour pilot.

스토리를 쓰고 캐스팅하고 제작진도 모으고 촬영하고 편집하고 필름을 보내고 2시간짜리 파일럿을 만들었죠

So it was not a lot of time.

정말 짧은 시간 동안 이게 뭐가 될수 있을까 하는 가능성을 볼수 없었습니다

And that sense of possibility -- what could this thing be?

There was no time to develop it.

찾아내기엔 너무 오래 걸렸거든요

I'm sure you're all familiar with people

여러분들 주변엔 당신이 할 수 없는 일들과

who tell you what you can't do and what you should change.

바뀌어야 한다고 말하는 사람들이 있을겁니다

근데 놀랍게도 그럴 시간이 없었습니다

There was no time for that, which is kind of amazing.

그래서 저희는 방송을 진행했죠 로스트를 보지 못하고 모르는 사람들을 위해

And so we did this show,

and for those of you who haven't seen it, or don't know it,

제가 파일럿의 한 장면을 들고 왔습니다

I can show you one little clip from the pilot,

just to show you some stuff that we did.

C: I'm only eight months.

J: And how far apart are they coming?

J : 주기가 어떻게 되나요?

C : 잘 모르겠어요. 그냥 일어나는 것 같아요

C: I don't know. I think it just happened.

남자 : 이봐요! 이봐요! 엔진에서 --

Man: Hey! Hey! Hey, get away from --

JJ Abrams: 10 years ago, if we wanted to do that,

만약에 10년 전에 이 장면을 찍으려 했다면 아마 스턴트맨을 죽여야 됐을 겁니다

we'd have to kill a stuntman.

(Laughter)

아마도 -- (웃음) --

It would be harder.

힘들겁니다. 아무래도 2번 촬영하면 큰일 났겠죠

Take two would be a bitch.

(Laughter)

놀라운 점은 이제 이런 장면을 찍을 수 있다는 겁니다

So the amazing thing was, we were able to do this thing.

And part of that was the amazing availability of technology,

저 장면은 이제 모든 것을 할 수 있다는

knowing we could do anything.

기술의 효용성을 보여줍니다. 절대 저런 장면을 찍을 수 없었을 겁니다

I mean, we could never have done that.

We might have been able to write it;

대본을 쓸 수는 있었겠지만 아무래도 지금한 것 처럼 촬영까진 할 수 없었겠죠

we wouldn't have been able to depict it like we did.

제가 창조하는 과정에 있어서 기술이 놀라운 점은

So part of the amazing thing for me is in the creative process,

정신을 날려버릴 정도로 영감을 준다는 겁니다

technology is mind-blowingly inspiring to me.

I realize that that blank page is a magic box, you know?

저는 빈 종이가 매직 박스라는 걸 깨달았습니다.

It needs to be filled with something fantastic.

이건 뭔가 놀라운 걸로 채워져야 합니다

I used to have the "Ordinary People" script that I'd flip through.

저는 "보통 사람들"의 대본을 쭉 넘겨봤는데

그 대본에 있는 로맨스는 제게 영감을 줄 정도로 놀라웠습니다

The romance was amazing to me; it would inspire me.

I wanted to try and fill pages

with the same kind of spirit and thought and emotion

각본에 쏟아내고 싶었습니다

that that script did.

So, you know, I love Apple computers.

에-- 저는 애플 컴퓨터를 좋아합니다. 정말 좋아합니다.

I'm obsessed.

애플컴퓨터들은 -- 이런 파워북들이 -- 예 이겁니다

So the Apple computer -- the PowerBook -- this computer,

it challenges me.

제게 도전을 합니다. 보통은 이렇게 물어보죠

It basically says, what are you going to write worthy of me?

나한테 걸맞는 작품을 써낼거야? (웃음)

I feel this -- I'm compelled.

전 아무래도 그걸 따르는 것 같습니다

(Laughter)

And I often am like, you know, dude, today I'm out.

가끔씩은 이봐 친구, 오늘은 지쳤어, 아무 생각이 안 난다구 이런 말도 하죠 (웃음)

I got nothing. You know? So there's that.

In terms of the content of it,

여러분이 이야기들을 보고 그 내용을 볼때 아마 이런 생각을 하실겁니다

you look at stories, you think, what are stories but mystery boxes?

대체 무슨 내용인데 미스터리가 이렇게 많아?

There's a fundamental question -- in TV, the first act is called the teaser.

이게 바로 첫번째 의문입니다 -- TV에서 새 프로그램을 위해 티저가 나오죠

It's literally the teaser. It's the big question.

이건 말그대로 놀리는 겁니다. 큰 질문을 던지죠

여러분은 거기에 빠지게 되고 당연히

So you're drawn into it. Then there's another question.

또다른 질문이 생기면서 꼬리에 꼬리를 물죠

And it goes on. Look at "Star Wars."

스타워즈의 경우를 생각해 봅시다 드로이드를 보고 의문의 여성을 보게 되죠

The droids meet the mysterious woman.

누굴까요? 모르죠? 미스터리입니다!

Who's that? We don't know. Mystery box! Then you meet Luke Skywalker.

그리고 여러분은 루크 스카이워커를 보게 됩니다니다. 그는 드로이드를 만나고 홀로그램이 나타납니다

He gets the droid, you see the holographic image.

여러분은 '아 이게 메세지구나' 라고 깨닫습니다

You learn it's a message. She wants to find Obi Wan Kenobi.

그녀는 오비완 캐노비를 원합니다. 그녀의 마지막 희망이죠

He's her only hope. But who's Obi Wan Kenobi?

Mystery box! So then he meets Ben Kenobi.

Ben Kenobi is Obi Wan Kenobi. Holy shit! So it keeps us --

Have you guys not seen that?

(Laughter)

(웃음) 명작이잖아요!

It's huge! Anyway --

So there's this thing with mystery boxes that I started feeling compelled.

제가 따르고 있다고 느낀 것들에는 미스터리 박스가 존재합니다

Then there's the thing of mystery in terms of imagination --

그리고 그 미스터리는 상상을 하면

the withholding of information.

정보 덩어리가 되어있죠

You know, doing that intentionally is much more engaging.

계획적으로 상상을 하게 되면 더 빠져듭니다

Whether it's like the shark in "Jaws" --

"죠스"에서의 상어의 예를 볼때

if Spielberg's mechanical shark, Bruce, had worked,

만약 스필버그가 만든 기계 상어인 브루스가 작동했다면

it would not be remotely as scary; you would have seen it too much.

상어가 상당히 많은 장면에서 나타나 겁이 나지 않았을겁니다

"에일리언"에서는 끔찍하게도 에일리언을 보여주지 않죠

In "Alien", they never really showed the alien: terrifying!

Even in a movie like a romantic comedy, "The Graduate,"

데이트 장면이 나오는데 기억하시나요?

they're having that date, and they're in the car,

주인공들이 차안에 있고 주변이 시끄러워 그들은 창문을 닫습니다

and it's loud, and so they put the top up.

You don't hear anything they're saying!

차 안에서 얘기하는 내용이 뭔지 알수가 없습니다! 들을 수가 없어요!

You can't hear a word! But it's the most romantic date ever.

하지만 그게 정말 멋진 데이트 장면이죠. 듣지 못하기에 더 좋아하는 겁니다

And you love it because you don't hear it.

So to me, there's that. And then, finally, there's this idea --

저도 똑같습니다

저에게는 아이디어가 오고 그 아이디어는 늘 미스터리 박스의

stretching the paradigm a little bit --

but the idea of the mystery box.

패러다임으로 넘어가 버립니다

Meaning, what you think you're getting, then what you're really getting.

사실, 여러분이 뭘 받을지 생각했다가 받게 되는 것은

수많은 영화들과 이야기들입니다

And it's true in so many movies and stories.

Look at "E.T.," for example --

예를 들어 E.T를 보게될 때 -- E.T는

"E.T." is this unbelievable movie about what?

무엇에 관한 영화인가요? 어린이를 만나는 외계인의 이야기죠. 맞죠?

It's about an alien who meets a kid, right?

Well, it's not. "E.T." is about divorce.

사실은 아닙니다. E.T는 이혼에 관한 이야기입니다. E.T는 소통이 끊기고

"E.T." is about a heartbroken, divorce-crippled family,

이혼의 위험에 있는 가정과 그리고 자신의 앞길을 찾지 못하는 아이의 이야기입니다

and ultimately, this kid who can't find his way.

"Die Hard," right? Crazy, great, fun, action-adventure movie in a building.

"다이하드" 아시죠? 죽여주죠, 대단하고 재밌는 액션 어드벤쳐 영화죠

It's about a guy who's on the verge of divorce.

사실은 이혼의 위기에 처한 남자의 이야기입니다

He's showing up to L.A., tail between his legs.

LA에 다리 뒤로 코트를 끌며 등장하죠

There are great scenes --

정말 멋진 장면입니다 -- 역사에 남을 정도로 좋다고 해야할진 모르겠지만

maybe not the most amazing dramatic scenes in the history of time,

정말로 멋진 장면입니다

but pretty great scenes.

There's a half an hour of investment in character

영화의 확실한 스토리가 진행되기까지 30분이란 시간동안 여러분은 인물에 대해

before you get to the stuff that you're expecting.

알게 되고 기대를 걸게됩니다

When you look at a movie like "Jaws,"

"죠스" 같은 영화를 볼때

여러분이 기대했던 장면들이 -- 영상 준비 됐나요?

the scene that you expect -- we have the screen?

These are the kind of scenes

이 장면은 여러분이 "죠스"에서 기대했고 기억하고 있는 장면입니다

that you remember and expect from "Jaws."

And she's being eaten;

저 여자는 잡히고 있고 그 밑에는 상어가 있죠

there's a shark.

(Woman screaming)

The thing about "Jaws" is, it's really about a guy

"죠스"는 사실 자신의 남자다움, 가족, 그의 장래,

who is sort of dealing with his place in the world -- with his masculinity,

새로운 마을에서 잘 사는 것등 세상에서의

with his family, how he's going to, you know, make it work in this new town.

자신의 자리를 위해 싸우는 남자에 관한 이야기입니다

This is one of my favorite scenes ever,

이건 제가 가장 좋아하는 장면입니다

and this is a scene that you wouldn't necessarily think of

여러분이 "죠스"에서 필요없다고 생각하는 부분일 겁니다

when you think of "Jaws." But it's an amazing scene.

하지만 정말 좋은 장면이죠

Best scene ever, right?

Come on! So you think of "Jaws" --

so that's the kind of stuff that,

인물들에 관한 이해와 어떤게 상자 안에 있는가와 같은

like, you know -- the investment of character,

which is the stuff that really is inside the box, you know?

것들을 생각해 봐야 합니다

It's why when people do sequels, or rip off movies, you know, of a genre,

이게 사람들이 후속작을 만들거나 도작을 하게 만드는 이유지만

they're ripping off the wrong thing.

그들은 엉뚱한 것을 가지고 도작을 하는겁니다

You're not supposed to rip off the shark or the monster.

상어나 괴물을 베껴야 되는게 아닙니다

베껴야 하는 건 -- 뭔가를 도작하려고 할때 -- 등장인물을 베껴야 합니다

You know, if you rip something off -- rip off the character.

Rip off the stuff that matters.

상황을 베껴야 합니다. 여러분 마음속에 뭐가 있는가 직접 생각해 보시죠

I mean, look inside yourself and figure out what is inside you.

제가 하고 싶은 말은 미스터리 박스는 우리 모두에게 있다는 겁니다

Because ultimately, the mystery box is all of us.

So there's that. Then the distribution.

What's a bigger mystery box than a movie theater? You know?

모두에게 나눠져 있어요. 극장 만큼 큰 미스터리 박스가 있나요?

You go to the theater, you're just so excited to see anything.

극장에 가면 뭐든 보는 것에 대한 기대에 흥분되있죠

불이 꺼지는 순간이 가장 좋은 순간 아닙니까?

The moment the lights go down is often the best part.

그리고 여러분의 마음은 --

And you're full of that amazing -- that feeling of excited anticipation.

흥분과 기대로 가득차게 됩니다

And often, the movie's there and it's going,

영화를 보면 계속 진행하다가 뭔가 일어나죠

and then something happens and you go, "Oh --", and then, "Mmm ..."

그럼 여러분은 "오--"라고 했다가 다른 일이 생기면 여러분은 "음" 이라 합니다

그게 정말 명작이라면 여러분은 소극적이되죠

When it's a great movie, you're along for the ride

그 속에 완전히 몰입할 것 같기 때문이죠

because you're willing to give yourself to it.

저에게는 TV든 아이팟이든 컴퓨터든 핸드폰이든

So to me, whether it's a TV, an iPod, computer, cell phone --

It's funny, I'm an -- as I said, Apple fanatic --

정말 재밌습니다. 저는 일종의 애플광신자입니다 -- 몇년 전인지 모르지만 하루는

and one day, about a year or so ago,

I was signing on online in the morning to watch Steve Jobs' keynote,

늘 그러듯 제가 스티브 잡스의 키노트 보기 위해 인터넷에 접속했습니다

because I always do.

그가 나와 비디오 아이팟에 대해 얘기하고 있었습니다

And he came on, he was presenting the video iPod,

and what was on the enormous iPod behind him?

그의 뒤에 있던 거대한 아이팟에 뭐가 나오고 있었는줄 아십니까?

"Lost"! I had no idea!

로스트였어요! 아무 생각이 나질 않았어요. 그리고 젠장이라 말하며 정신을 차렸죠

And I realized, holy shit, it'd come full circle.

The inspiration I get from the technology

제가 기술로부터 얻은 영감들이 이제는 제가 한 일들을 이용하기 시작한 겁니다

is now using the stuff that I do to sell technology. It's nuts!

제 작품에 영감을 얻어서 기술을 팔아치우고... 이게 뭡니까! (웃음)

(Laughter)

I was going to show you a couple of other things I'm going to skip.

제가 그냥 생략하려 했던 두가지를 보여드리죠

다른 것들과는 전혀 상관없는 다른 걸 보여드릴까 합니다

I'll show you one other thing that has nothing to do with anything.

이건 인터넷에 있던건데 보셨는지 모르겠습니다

This is something online; six years ago, they did this.

6년전에 인터넷에 올라온 작품입니다 이건

This is an online thing done by guys who had some visual effects experience.

영상효과 경험자들이 만든 겁니다. 하지만 중요한건

But the point was, that they were doing things

그들이 하고 있는 일들은 모두 그들 속에 있던 미스터리 박스에서 나왔다는 것입니다

that were using these mystery boxes that they had -- everyone has now.

모두가 가지고 있는 겁니다

What I've realized is what my grandfather did for me when I was a kid,

제가 어릴때 제 할아버지가 제게 해주신 것들이 뭐였는지 깨달은건

everyone has access to now.

모두들 알게 되었다는 겁니다

You don't need to have my grandfather, though you wish you had.

여러분에게는 제 할아버지가 필요하다고 생각해도 필요하지 않습니다

But I have to tell you --

제가 여러분께 말씀 드리고 싶은건 이 청년은 Quadra 950이란 그래픽카드가 달린

this is a guy doing stuff on a Quadra 950 computer --

the resolution's a little bit low --

해상도가 낮은 컴퓨터를 사용했으며

15년전에 개발이 멈춘 소프트웨어를 사용했다는 겁니다

using Infinity software they stopped making 15 years ago.

이 청년은 제가 할리우드에서 본 것 만큼 놀라운 작업을 했습니다

He's doing stuff that looks as amazing

as stuff I've seen released from Hollywood.

The most incredible sort of mystery, I think,

미스터리 중에 가장 놀라운건 다음에는 뭐가 나타날까 하는 궁금증입니다

is now the question of what comes next.

Because it is now democratized.

이미 시작되었지만 미디어의 제작이 어디서든 가능해졌습니다

So now, the creation of media -- it's everywhere.

The stuff that I was lucky and begging for to get when I was a kid

제가 어릴적 빌고 운이좋아 얻은 것들이 어디서든 가능해졌습니다

is now ubiquitous.

And so, there's an amazing sense of opportunity out there.

그리고 이제는 수많은 기회들이 있습니다

And when I think of the filmmakers who exist out there now

제가 지금은 조용히 있는 영화 제작자들에 대해서 생각할때

who would have been silenced, you know --

who have been silenced in the past --

-- 예전부터 활동을 멈춘 사람들 말이죠 --

it's a very exciting thing.

I used to say in classes and lectures and stuff,

to someone who wants to write, "Go! Write! Do your thing."

It's free, you don't need permission.

필기를 하는데 허가를 받을 필요가 없습니다. 그리고 저는

But now I can say, "Go make your movie!" There's nothing stopping you

"영화를 만들어봐!" 라고 말할 수 있습니다. 아무것도

기술을 이용하거나 도전하는걸 막지 않거든요

from going out there and getting the technology.

계약을 하고 임대를 하거나 진열된 물건을 사도 되죠

You can lease, rent, buy stuff off the shelf

그건 좋습니다. 그 물건을 쓰는 모든 사람들은

that is either as good, or just as good,

as the stuff that's being used by the, you know, "legit people."

"합법적인 사람들이거든요"

No community is best served when only the elite have control.

엘리트만이 주도적으로 이끈다면 어떤 모임도 성공하지 못합니다

And I feel like this is an amazing opportunity

그리고 이 세계에는 정말 대단한 기회가 많은 것 같습니다

to see what else is out there.

미션 임파서블 3를 제작할때 정말로 멋진 특수효과를 사용했습니다

When I did "Mission: Impossible III," we had amazing visual effects.

특수효과 제작팀이 만들기는 했지만 대단했습니다

ILM did the effects; it was incredible.

제 꿈도 수용되었죠

And sort of my dream to be involved.

영화에서는 두 장면을 이어서 나왔는데

And there are a couple of sequences in the movie,

like these couple of moments I'll show you.

이 두 장면을 보여드리도록 하겠습니다

There's that.

지금 나오는 겁니다

(Video) Luther: Ethan, move!

(Explosion)

Obviously, I have an obsession with big crazy explosions.

예 사실 전 크고 멋진 폭발 장면을 정말 좋아합니다

So my favorite visual effect in the movie is the one I'm about to show you.

지금 보여드릴 장면은 제가 제일 좋아하는 특수효과가 들어있습니다

It's a scene in which Tom's character wakes up.

이 장면은 톰 크루즈의 캐릭터가 깨어나죠. 정신이 없고 혼란스러운 상태입니다

He's drowsy. He's crazy.

한 남자가 그를 깨우고

And the guy wakes up, and he shoves this gun in his nose

모든 악당이 하듯이 그의 코에 총을 들이대고 나중에 죽이기 위해서

and shoots this little capsule into his brain

그의 뇌를 향해서 캡슐을 쏘죠

that he's going to use later to kill him, as bad guys do.

(Video) Brownway: Good morning.

악당 : 잘 잤나

JJA: OK, now.

자 이 장면을 찍으면서 촬영중일때

When we shot that scene,

the actor who had the gun, an English actor, Eddie Marsan --

총을 가졌던 아주 좋고 착한 영국 배우 에디 마산은

sweetheart, great guy --

he kept taking the gun and putting it into Tom's nose,

톰의 코에 총을 들이대고 있었지만 톰의 코를 아프게 하고 있었습니다

and it was hurting Tom's nose.

And I learned this very early on in my career:

제 경력상 톰의 코를 다치게 해선 안된다는 걸 알고 있었죠 (웃음)

Don't hurt Tom's nose.

(Laughter)

There are three things you don't want to do.

여러분이 해선 안될 세가지가 있는데 두번째가 톰의 코를 다치게 하면 안된다는 겁니다

Number two is: Don't hurt Tom's nose.

정말로 좋은 남자인 에디가 총을 들고 있으면서

So Eddie has this gun -- and he's this sweet English guy.

이 착한 영국배우가 "정말 아프라고 이러는게 아니야"라고 말하더군요

He's like, "Sorry, I don't want to hurt you."

저는 모두가 이 장면을 좋게 찍어야 겠다고 생각했습니다

I'm like, "We have to make this look good."

그리고 계획대로 되지 않았기 때문에 다른 방법을 써야 한다는걸 깨달았습니다

And I realized that we had to do something because it wasn't working.

그리고 저는 제 할아버지가 주신 8mm카메라로 과연 이 상황에서

And I thought back to what I would have done

using the Super 8 camera that my grandfather got me

어떻게 했을까라는 생각을 하기 시작했습니다

sitting in that room,

그리고 꼭 그 손이 에디의 손이 아니라 톰의 손으로도 되겠다는 생각이 들었습니다

and I realized that hand didn't have to be Eddie Marsan's.

It could be Tom's.

And Tom would know just how hard to push the gun.

아마 톰은 자기가 안아프게 총을 쏘는 방법을 알고 있었겠죠

He wouldn't hurt himself.

So we took his hand and we painted it to look a little bit more like Eddie's.

그래서 우린 톰의 손을 에디의 손처럼 보이도록 분장시켰습니다

그리고 그 손을 에디의 옷에 넣고

We put it in Eddie's sleeve,

and so the hand that you see --

여러분이 본대로 되었습니다 -- 다시 보여드리죠

that's not Eddie's hand, that's Tom's. So Tom is playing two roles.

에디의 손이 아니라 톰의 손입니다

한마디로 톰이 1인 2역을 하는겁니다 (웃음)

(Laughter)

And he didn't ask for any more money.

추가 금액을 요구하지도 않았어요

So you don't need the greatest technology to do things that can work in movies.

And the mystery box, in honor of my grandfather, stays closed.
