When I was looking at these pictures,

it brought me back many years to my past

when I was a child.

I grew up in a small neighborhood in Jerusalem.

When I was six years old, I was walking back from school

We were passing by a bus stop.

We saw a bus blow up in front of our eyes.

The bus was on fire, and many people were hurt and killed.

I remembered an old man

He just needed someone helping him.

We were so scared and we just ran away.

Growing up, I decided I wanted to become a doctor and save lives.

Maybe that was because of what I saw when I was a child.

When I was 15, I took an EMT course,

and I went to volunteer on an ambulance.

For two years, I volunteered on an ambulance in Jerusalem.

I helped many people,

but whenever someone really needed help,

I never got there in time. We never got there.

The traffic is so bad. The distance, and everything.

One day, we received a call about a seven-year-old child

Traffic was horrific, and we were coming from

When we got there, 20 minutes later,

A doctor comes in from a block away,

stop us, checks the kid, and tells us to stop CPR.

That second he declared this child dead.

At that moment, I understood

If this doctor, who lived one block away from there,

coming from the ambulance,

I said to myself, there must be a better way.

Together with 15 of my friends --

we were all EMTs —

we decided, let's protect our neighborhood,

so when something like that happens again,

we will be there running to the scene a lot before the ambulance.

So I went over to the manager of the ambulance company

and I told him, "Please, whenever you have a call

Well, he was laughing. I was 17 years old. I was a kid.

그 책임자는 소리내서 웃었어요. 당시 저는 고작 17살의 소년이었으니까요.

And he said to me — I remember this like yesterday —

그가 제게 말했습니다. 아직도 어제처럼 생생히 기억합니다.

he was a great guy, but he said to me,

"Kid, go to school, or go open a falafel stand.

We're not really interested in these kinds of new adventures.

We're not interested in your help." And he threw me out of the room.

I was a very stubborn kid.

So I decided to use the Israeli very famous technique

you've probably all heard of, chutzpah. (Laughter)

And the next day, I went and I bought two police scanners,

I ran there by foot. I had no medical equipment.

I knew I had to stop his bleeding or else he would die.

I took off my yarmulke, because I had no medical equipment,

At that moment, when I realized this is the first person

I knew this is my life's mission.

So today, 22 years later, we have United Hatzalah.

"Hatzalah" means "rescue," for all of you who don't know Hebrew.

I forgot I'm not in Israel.

So we have thousands of volunteers

who are passionate about saving lives,

and they're spread all around, so whenever a call comes in,

they just stop everything and go and run and save a life.

Our average response time today

went down to less than three minutes in Israel.

I'm talking about heart attacks,

I'm talking about car accidents,

God forbid bomb attacks, shootings, whatever it is,

even a woman 3 o'clock in the morning

새벽 3시에 집 안에서 넘어져서

falling in her home and needs someone to help her.

누군가의 도움이 필요한 여성에게도요.

Three minutes, we'll have a guy with his pajamas

3분이면 잠옷 차림의 남자가

running to her house and helping her get up.

그녀의 집에 달려가 그녀가 일어서는 걸 돕습니다.

The reasons why we're so successful are because of three things.

저희가 이렇게 성공한 데는 세 가지 이유가 있습니다

Thousands of passionate volunteers

첫번째는 수천명의 열정적인 자원 봉사자들입니다.

who will leave everything they do

그들은 자신이 하던 모든 걸 멈추고

and run to help people they don't even know.

알지도 못하는 사람을 구하기 위해 언제든 달려갈 준비가 되어있지요.

We're not there to replace ambulances.

We're just there

구급차가 도착하기 전까지의

to get the gap between the ambulance call until they arrive.

그 사이 시간을 벌기 위해 가는 겁니다.

And we save people that otherwise would not be saved.

그렇게 해서, 우리가 없었다면 구할 수 없었을 사람들의 생명을 구하는 겁니다.

The second reason is because of our technology.

두번째 이유는 우리의 기술력이에요.

You know, Israelis are good in technology.

아시다시피 이스라엘은 기술적으로 발달한 나라죠.

Every one of us has on his phone, no matter what kind of phone,

저희 자원 봉사자들은 모두

a GPS technology done by NowForce,

나우포스(NowForce)에서 개발한 GPS 탑재 휴대 전화기를 갖고 있어요.

and whenever a call comes in,

구조 요청 신호가 들어오면

the closest five volunteers get the call,

현장에서 가장 가까운 자원 봉사자 다섯명이 그 신호를 받습니다.

and they actually get there really quick,

또 그들은 최단 시간에 현장에 도착할 수 있도록

and navigated by a traffic navigator to get there and not waste time.

And this is a great technology we use all over the country

and reduce the response time.

And the third thing are these ambucycles.

These ambucycles are an ambulance on two wheels.

We don't transfer people, but we stabilize them,

They never get stuck in traffic. They could even go on a sidewalk.

That's why we get there so fast.

A few years after I started this organization,

in a Jewish community,

한 유대인 동네에서,

two Muslims from east Jerusalem called me up.

동 예루살렘 출신의 무슬림 두명이 제게 연락을 해왔어요.

They ask me to meet. They wanted to meet with me.

제게 만나기를 청하더군요. 저를 만나고 싶어했습니다.

Muhammad Asli and Murad Alyan.

무하마드 아슬리와 무라드 알리안이라는 두 사람이었습니다.

When Muhammad told me his personal story,

무하마드는 제게 자신의 이야기를 들려주었습니다.

how his father, 55 years old, collapsed at home,

그의 아버지가 55세의 나이에

had a cardiac arrest,

심장마비로 집에서 쓰러졌는데,

and it took over an hour for an ambulance arrive,

구급차가 도착하기까지 한 시간이 넘게 걸려서

and he saw his father die in front of his eyes,

결국 그는 아버지가 돌아가시는 것을 눈 앞에서 봐야만 했다는 것입니다.

he asked me, "Please start this in east Jerusalem."

I said to myself, I saw so much tragedy, so much hate,

and it's not about saving Jews. It's not about saving Muslims.

이건 유대인을 살리는 일도 무슬림을 살리는 일도

It's not about saving Christians. It's about saving people.

So I went ahead, full force --

and I started United Hatzalah in east Jerusalem,

and that's why the names United

그렇기에 저희 단체 이름의 유나이티드 (United)와 (역주: United - 하나된)

and Hatzalah match so well.

핫잘라 (Hatzalah - 구조)라는 단어가 정말 잘 어울리는 것입니다.

We started hand in hand saving Jews and Arabs.

우리는 힘을 합쳐 유대인과 아랍인들을 구조하기 시작했습니다.

Arabs were saving Jews. Jews were saving Arabs.

아랍인들이 유대인들을 살리고 있었고, 유대인들이 아랍인들을 살리고 있었어요.

Something special happened.

특별한 일이 일어난 것이죠.

Arabs and Jews, they don't always get along together,

아랍인들과 유대인들 사이는 언제나 평화롭지는 않습니다.

but here in this situation,

하지만 이 상황에서,

the communities, literally,

이 모든 동네들에서, 말 그대로,

it's an unbelievable situation that happened,

믿을 수 없는 상황이 벌어진 거죠.

the diversities, all of a sudden they had a common interest:

Let's save lives together.

죽어가는 사람들을 다함께 살리자.

Settlers were saving Arabs and Arabs were saving settlers.

유대인 정착민들이 아랍인들을 살리고 있었고 아랍인들이 유대인 정착민들을 살리고 있었습니다.

It's an unbelievable concept that could work

이 믿을 수 없는 개념은

이처럼 중대한 목적이 있을 때에만 현실화 됩니다.

only when you have such a great cause.

And these are all volunteers.

그리고 이 모든 사람들이 다 자원 봉사자들이에요.

No one is getting money.

그 누구도 돈 한 푼 받지 않습니다.

They're all doing it for the purpose of saving lives.

모두가 생명을 살리는 그 목적을 위해 뛰고 있습니다.

When my own father collapsed a few years ago

몇 년 전 제 아버지가 심장마비로

from a cardiac arrest, one of the first volunteers

쓰러지셨을 때, 아버지를 구하기 위해

to arrive to save my father

제일 먼저 달려온 자원 봉사자 중 하나는

was one of these Muslim volunteers from east Jerusalem

who was in the first course to join Hatzalah.

And he saved my father.

Could you imagine how I felt in that moment?

When I started this organization, I was 17 years old.

I never imagined that one day I'd be speaking at TEDMED.

제가 언젠가 TEDMED에서 강연하리라고는 상상도 못했습니다.

I never even knew what TEDMED was then.

그때는 TEDMED가 뭔지도 몰랐지만요.

I don't think it existed, but I never imagined,

당시에는 존재하지 않았던 것 같지만, 상상도 못했어요.

I never imagined that it's going to go all around,

이 단체가 이렇게 널리 알려지고

멀리까지 퍼질 줄은요.

it's going to spread around,

작년에는 파나마와 브라질에서도 활동을 시작했습니다.

and this last year we started in Panama and Brazil.

All I need is a partner who is a little meshugenah like me,

저처럼 조금 미친 조력자면 충분합니다.

passionate about saving lives, and willing to do it.

사람의 생명을 구하는 일에 열정을 갖고 있고, 그렇게 할 의지가 있다면요.

And I'm actually starting it in India very soon

인도에서도 조만간 시작할 계획입니다.

with a friend who I met in Harvard just a while back.

얼마 전 하버드에서 만난 한 친구와 함께요.

Hatzalah actually started in Brooklyn by a Hasidic Jew

사실 핫잘라는 저희보다 수년 전에

years before us in Williamsburg,

브로클린 윌리엄스버그에서 한 하시딕 유대인에 의해 시작되었습니다.

and now it's all over the Jewish community in New York,

even Australia and Mexico and many other Jewish communities.

But it could spread everywhere.

Last year alone, we treated in Israel 207,000 people.

Forty-two thousand of them were life-threatening situations.

And we made a difference.

I guess you could call this a lifesaving flash mob,

When I look all around here,

no matter who, where they come from.

We all want to be heroes.

We just need a good idea, motivation

우리가 필요한 건 한가지 좋은 생각과, 의지와,

and lots of chutzpah,

많은 대범함 뿐입니다.

and we could save millions of people

그럼 우리는 죽을 수 밖에 없었던

that otherwise would not be saved.

수많은 사람들의 목숨을 살리게 될거에요.
