Let's talk dirty.

And that's because it's such an enraging,

But that day, when I asked that question,

I learned something, and that was that I'd grown up thinking

And they have to do what this little boy is doing

And he does that every day,

But he should, because the problem

You can't see her, because she's buried

under that green grass in a little village in Liberia,

Diarrhea is the second biggest killer of children worldwide,

and you've probably been asked to care about things

It's a very potent weapon of mass destruction.

These are cholera beds in Haiti.

You'll have heard of cholera, but we don't hear about diarrhea.

It gets a fraction of the attention and funding

But we know how to fix this.

We know how to solve diarrhea and sanitation,

but if you look at the budgets of countries,

But then you look at that already minuscule

And I think that the real waste of human waste

because these are a few things that toilets

So a toilet can put a girl back in school.

They've been used to sitting through lessons

We've all done that, but they do it every day,

and when they hit puberty and they start menstruating,

it just gets too much.

And I understand that. Who can blame them?

So if you met an educationalist and said,

"I can improve education attendance rates by 25 percent

with just one simple thing,"

you'd make a lot of friends in education.

That's not the only thing it can do for you.

Poop can cook your dinner.

It's got nutrients in it.

We ingest nutrients. We excrete nutrients as well.

We don't keep them all.

In Rwanda, they are now getting

75 percent of their cooking fuel in their prison system

So these are a bunch of inmates in a prison in Butare.

They're genocidal inmates, most of them,

and they're stirring the contents of their own latrines,

So the idea is to manipulate human emotion.

It's been done for decades. The soap companies did it

They tried selling soap as healthy. No one bought it.

It's called "No Loo, No I Do."

And in case you think that poster's just propaganda,

here's Priyanka, 23 years old.

스물셋의 프리얀카 얘기를 해드릴께요.

I met her last October in India,

지난 10월에 인도에서 그녀를 만났는데,

and she grew up in a conservative environment.

She grew up in a rural village in a poor area of India,

인도의 매우 가난한 동네에서 자랐는데,

and she was engaged at 14, and then at 21 or so,

14살에 약혼을 하고, 21살 쯤에

she moved into her in-law's house.

And she was horrified to get there and find

that they didn't have a toilet.

발견하고 무서워했어요.

She'd grown up with a latrine.

It was no big deal, but it was a latrine.

And the first night she was there, she was told

that at 4 o'clock in the morning --

her mother-in-law got her up, told her to go outside

and go and do it in the dark in the open.

And she was scared. She was scared of drunks hanging around.

After three days, she did an unthinkable thing.

And if you know anything about rural India,

you'll know that's an unspeakably courageous thing to do.

But not just that.

She got her toilet, and now she goes around

all the other villages in India

그리고 이제 인도 곳곳을 다니며

persuading other women to do the same thing.

다른 여성들에게 똑같이 하도록 설득하고 있어요.

It's what I call social contagion, and it's really powerful

and really exciting.

Another version of this, another village in India

비슷한 경우로,

near where Priyanka lives

is this village, called Lakara, and about a year ago,

it had no toilets whatsoever.

Kids were dying of diarrhea and cholera.

아이들은 설사와 콜레라로 죽어갔죠.

Some visitors came, using various behavioral change tricks

몇몇이 이곳을 방문해서는 생활 습관을 바꿀 여러가지 방법을 썼어요.

like putting out a plate of food and a plate of shit

가령 음식이 든 그릇과 똥이 든 그릇을 놓고

and watching the flies go one to the other.

파리가 두 군데를 왔다 갔다 하는 것을 보여줬죠.

Somehow, people who'd been thinking

어쨌든 자신들이 하는 일이

that what they were doing was not disgusting at all

전혀 문제될게 없다고 생각하던 이들이

suddenly thought, "Oops."

갑자기 깨닫게 되었죠, "이런!"

Not only that, but they were ingesting their neighbors' shit.

그 주변의 똥도 먹는다는 걸 알게 된거죠.

That's what really made them change their behavior.

이렇게해서 그들의 생활 습관을 바꾸게 되었습니다.

So this woman, this boy's mother

소년의 엄마인 여기 이 여성은

installed this latrine in a few hours.

몇 시간만에 집에 변소를 놓았어요.

Her entire life, she'd been using the banana field behind,

평생 동안 그녀는 바나나 농장 뒤에서 일을 봤지만

but she installed the latrine in a few hours.

단 몇 시간만에 변소를 설치한 거에요.

It cost nothing. It's going to save that boy's life.

So when I get despondent about the state of sanitation,

even though these are pretty exciting times

because we've got the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

reinventing the toilet, which is great,

But there are things to worry about.
