I recognized the roles that were placed on me very early.

One persistent concept that I observed --

대중 매체나 사람들의 대화에는 한가지 고정관념이 있는데요.

existing in our language, in our media --

was that women are not only supposed to have children,

여성은 아이를 가져야 할 뿐만 아니라

they are supposed to want to.

갖기를 원해야 한다는 고정관념입니다.

This existed everywhere.

이런 고정관념은 어디에나 있습니다.

It existed in the ways that adults spoke to me

어른들이 저에게 하는 질문에도 그 고정관념이 내포되어 있죠.

when they posed questions in the context of "when."

"언제 뭘 하면.." 이런 식의 질문입니다.

"When you get married ..."

"네가 결혼하게 되면..."

"When you have kids ..."

"네가 아이들을 갖게 되면..."

And these future musings were always presented to me

제게 늘 이런 식으로 미래에 대한 암시를 주었죠.

like part of this American dream,

그게 마치 미국인이 가져야 할 꿈인 것처럼요.

but it always felt to me like someone else's dream.

하지만 제게는 항상 남의 이야기로 느껴졌습니다.

You see, a value that I have always understood about myself

저 스스로 늘 가졌던 가치관은

was that I never wanted children.

결코 아이를 갖지 않겠다는 것이었습니다.

And as a kid, when I would try to explain this,

제가 어렸을 때는

사람들이 제게 원했던 역할과

this disconnect between their roles and my values,

저의 가치관 사이의 차이를 설명하려고 하면

they often laughed

애들이 생각 없이 하는 말이라며 어른들은 웃어 넘기곤 했습니다.

in the way that adults do at the absurdities of children.

And they would tell me knowingly,

그리고 확신하듯 이렇게 말했죠.

"You'll change your mind."

"네 생각은 바뀔 거야." 라고요.

And people have been saying things like that to me my whole life.

지금껏 만난 사람들도 같은 말을 했습니다.

Otherwise polite conversation can turn intrusive fast.

점잖은 대화가 무르익다가도 이런 말로 갑자기 찬물을 끼얹죠.

"Does your husband know?"

"당신 남편도 알아요?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"Do your parents know?"

"부모님도 알고 계세요?"

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"Don't you want a family?"

"당신은 가족을 원하지 않나요?"

"Don't you want to leave anything behind?"

"당신은 아무 것도 남기고 싶지 않아요?"

And the primary buzzword when discussing childlessness,

아이를 갖지 않겠다는 말에 가장 흔한 반응은 바로 이거에요.

"That's selfish."

"그거 너무 이기적이야."

There are countless reasons a woman may have

아이를 갖지 않는 여성에게는 셀 수 없이 많은 이유가 있습니다.

for choosing to abstain from motherhood,

the majority of them not self-prioritizing.

그런 여성 대다수는 이기적이지 않아요.

But it is still socially acceptable to publicly vilify women as such,

하지만 여전히 우리 사회는 그런 여성들을 비난합니다.

because none of these reasons have made it into the social narrative.

아이를 갖지 않는 이유에 대한 사회적 논의가 없었기 때문이죠.

When I was little and learning about the inevitability of maternity,

어릴 적에는 커서 엄마가 되는 게 당연하다고 배웠지만

it was never explained to me

여성들이 공통적으로 고려해야 할 요소들을 설명해주는 이는 없었습니다.

the commonness of these factors that women consider,

like the risk of passing on hereditary illness,

예를 들어, 질병이 유전될 위험성이나

the danger of having to stop life-saving medication

임신 중에 치료약 복용을 멈춰야 할 때 뒤따르는 위험성

for the duration of your pregnancy,

concern about overpopulation,

인구 과잉에 대한 우려

your access to resources,

자원에 대한 접근성

and the fact that there are 415,000 children

그리고 미국에서 415,000명의 아이들이

in the foster-care system in the United States at any given time.

아무 때나 위탁 보호 시설에 맡져진다는 사실말이죠.

Reasons like these, many more,

바로 이런 이유들과..

다른 이유들도 많고요.

and the fact that I don't like to leave things of this magnitude to chance,

저는 이 모든 것들을 운에 맡기기 싫었기 때문에

all informed my decision

불임 시술을 하기로 결심했습니다.

to become surgically sterilized.

I began my research eagerly.

저는 열심히 검색하기 시작했어요.

I wanted to fully understand

확실하게 알고 싶었습니다.

all that was going to come with undergoing a tubal ligation,

난관 결찰 수술 후에 겪게 될 모든 것들을 알고 싶었죠.

which is just another word for getting your tubes tied.

나팔관을 묶어 버린다는 뜻입니다.

I wanted to know approval to aftermath,

그 수술의 장점부터 후유증까지 모두 알고 싶었어요.

satisfaction rates, risks, statistics.

만족도, 위험, 통계치 같은 것들이요.

And at first, I was empowered.

처음엔 저는 자신만만했습니다.

You see, the way the narrative has always been taught to me,

사람들의 이야기를 듣고서 제가 알고 있기로는

I would have thought that women who didn't want children were so rare,

아이를 원치 않는 여성들이 드물 거라는 생각을 하곤 했죠.

and then I learned one in five American women

나중에서야 미국 여성 5명 중 1명은 아이를 낳지 않는다는 걸 알았습니다.

won't be having a biological child --

some by choice, some by chance.

원하든 원치 않든 말이죠.

(Applause)

But I was not alone.

저는 혼자가 아니었어요.

But the more I read, the more disheartened I became.

하지만 알면 알수록 실망감이 들었습니다.

I read women's stories,

어떻게든 불임시술을 하려고 애쓰는

trying desperately to get this procedure.

여성들의 이야기를 읽은 적이 있는데요.

I learned how common it was for women to exhaust their finances

수술을 위해 재산을 탕진하는 경우가 흔하다는 것도 알았고

appealing to dozens of ob-gyns over many years,

여러 산부인과를 전전하며

몇 년을 애쓰더라도

only to be turned down so many times,

병원 측의 노골적인 무시를 당하며 결국 포기해버린다는 걸 알았습니다.

often with such blatant disrespect that they just gave up.

Women reported that medical practitioners were often condescending

그녀들의 경험담에 따르면 의료진들이 종종 자신들을 폄하하고

and dismissive of their motivations,

자신들의 동기를 무시한다고 합니다.

being told things like,

예를 들어 이런 말을 듣는 거죠.

"Come back when you're married with a child."

"결혼해서 아이를 낳거든 다시 오세요."

But women who did have children, who went to go get this procedure,

하지만 아이를 가지고 나서 불임 시술을 받으러 간 여성은

were told they were too young,

너무 어리다거나

or they didn't have enough children,

아이가 많지 않다는 이유로 거절당했죠.

which is very interesting,

이 사실은 매우 흥미로운데요.

because the legal requirements in my state for getting this kind of surgery were,

왜냐하면 이 수술을 받을 수 있는 법적 조건은

"Be at least 21 years old,"

21세 이상이고

"appear of sound mind, acting of your own accord,"

정상적 판단에 의한 자발적 의사이어야 하며

and "have a 30-day waiting period."

30일간의 숙고 기간을 가져야 한다는 것입니다.

And I was perplexed that I could meet all of these legal requirements

저는 이 세 가지 법적 조건을 모두 만족시키고 있는데도

and still have to face a battle in the exam room

여전히 제 몸에 대한 자율성을 놓고 싸워야 한다는 것이 당황스러웠습니다.

for my bodily autonomy.

And it was daunting,

겁이 났어요.

but I was determined.

하지만 제 생각은 확고했습니다.

I remember I dressed so professionally to that first appointment.

첫 병원 진료 때 옷을 엄청 신경써서 입고 갔어요.

(Laughter)

I sat up straight.

저는 똑바로 앉아서

I spoke clearly.

분명하게 말했습니다.

I wanted to give that doctor every piece of evidence

그 의사에게 하나하나 증거를 대며

that I was not the date of birth in that file.

제 나이에 비해 어리지 않음을 알릴 생각이었습니다.

And I made sure to mention things like,

이 말을 확실히 해두고 싶었죠.

"I just got my bachelor's degree

"저는 학사 학위가 있고요

and I'm applying to these doctoral programs,

그리고 박사 과정에 지원하려는 중이고

I'm going to study these things."

이런 것들을 공부할 것입니다."

And "my long-term partner has this kind of business,"

"저의 배우자는 이러한 직업을 갖고 있고요."

and "I've done research on this for months.

"그리고 저는 이 수술에 대해서 몇 달을 공부도 했습니다.

I understand everything about it, all the risks."

모든 위험 요소들에 대해 전부 이해하고 있어요." 라고요.

Because I needed the doctor to know that this was not a whim,

제 결정이 충동적인 것이 아님을 의사가 알아주기를 바랐습니다.

not reactionary,

반항심도 아니고요.

not your 20-something looking to go out and party

녹초가 되도록 파티에 돌아다니는 20대도 아니고요.

without fear of getting knocked up ...

(Laughter)

(웃음)

that this supported something integral to who I was.

제가 누군지 뒷받침해주는 것들을 말하고 싶었습니다.

And I understand informed consent,

저는 수술동의서 내용도 이해했고

so I fully expected to be reeducated on how it all worked, but ...

수술이 어떻게 진행될지 다시 설명해주리라고 기대했지만

At one point, the information being given to me started to feel agenda'd,

어느 순간, 제가 접한 정보들이 논제가 되어

interlaced with bias and inflated statistics.

편견과 부풀린 통계치로 뒤섞이게 되었습니다.

The questions began to feel interrogative.

처음에는 질문으로 시작되었어요.

At first they were asking me questions

처음에 제게 질문을 할 때는

that seemed to understand my situation better,

제 상황을 잘 이해하는 것 같았어요.

and then it seemed like they were asking questions to try to trip me up.

그런데 점차 저의 실수를 유도하는 듯한 질문을 하기 시작했습니다.

I felt like I was on the witness stand, being cross-examined.

마치 증인석에서 심문을 당하는 것 같았죠.

The doctor asked me about my partner.

그 의사는 제 배우자에 대해 물었습니다.

"How does he or she feel about all of this?"

"그 또는 그녀는 수술에 대해 어떻게 생각하나요?"

"Well, I've been with the same man for five years,

"저는이 배우자와 5년을 지냈고요.

and he fully supports any decision I make for my body."

그는 저의 생각을 완전히 지지합니다."

And he said, "Well, what happens in the future,

그러자 의사가 말했죠.

"나중에 배우자의 생각이 바뀌면요?

if you change partners?

What happens when that person wants children?"

배우자가 아이를 원하면 어떡하죠?"

And I didn't quite know how to react to that,

그때 저는..

어떻게 반응해야 할지 몰랐습니다.

because what I was hearing

왜냐하면 그 의사의 말은 마치..

was this doctor tell me that I'm supposed to disregard everything I believe

배우자가 아이를 원하면 저의 모든 신념을 버리라는 의미로 들렸거든요.

if a partner demands children.

So I told him not to worry about that.

그래서 저는 그런 문제는 걱정 없다고 말했습니다.

My stance on childbearing has always been first date conversation.

첫 데이트에서의 대화 주제는 늘 아이를 낳는 문제였거든요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

(Cheering)

(환호)

(Laughter)

(웃음)

He then asks me to consider

그러자 그 의사는 이걸 생각해보라고 했어요.

how "in 20 years, you could really come to regret this" ...

20년 후에 이 일을 후회하게 될지도 모른다고 말이죠.

as though I hadn't.

I told him,

저는 그에게 말했습니다.

"OK, if I wake up one day

"네, 어느 날 아침에 일어나서

and realize, you know,

깨닫게 될지도 모르죠.

I wish I'd made a different decision back then,

그때 다른 결정을 내렸어야 했다고 말이죠.

the truth is, I'd only removed a single path to parenthood.

그런데 사실, 부모가 되기 위한 한 가지 길만 배제했을 뿐입니다.

I never needed biology to form family anyway."

저는 단지 생물학적으로 가족을 만드는 걸 원치 않을 뿐이에요."

(Applause)

And I would much rather deal with that any day

차라리 언제든지 다룰 수 있는 이런 문제를 생각하는 게 낫죠.

than deal with one day waking up,

미래의 어느 날에 일어나서 생각해보니

realize I'd had a child

원하지 않았던 아이를 가졌음을 깨닫거나

that I didn't really want or was prepared to care for.

아이를 키울 준비가 필요했다고 후회하는 것보다 말이죠.

Because one of these affects only me.

왜냐하면 그렇게 되면 저에게 큰 영향을 미칠 것이고

The other affects a child,

또 아이에게 영향을 주기 때문입니다.

their development, their well-being --

아이의 발달이나 행복에요.

and human beings are not to be gambled with.

인간의 존재 가치에 도박을 걸 수는 없습니다.

He then tells me why no one was going to approve this procedure,

그 의사는 왜 아무도 이 절차를 승인하지 않을 것인지 말했습니다.

certainly not he,

그가 아니라, 의학적 가부장주의 때문이죠.

because of a concept called medical paternalism,

which allows him, as my well-informed provider,

그 개념이 그 의사로 하여금

저를 잘아는 의료진으로서 저를 대신해서 판단하도록 합니다.

to make decisions for me ...

based on his perception of my best interest,

저에게 어떤 이익이 있는지만 판단하고

regardless of what I, as the patient, want or believe.

환자인 제가 원하는 것과 저의 신념은 무시하는 거죠.

He takes this opportunity to step out

그는 제게 진료실 밖으로 잠시 나가 있으라고 했고

and discuss my case with my potential surgeon,

수술을 맡을 의사들과 저에 대해 의논했습니다.

and through the door, I hear him describe me as a little girl.

문 틈으로 그가 저를 어린애로 취급하는 걸 듣게 되었어요.

I was so offended.

저는 너무 화가 났어요.

I wanted to defend myself.

저 스스로를 지키고 싶었습니다.

I wanted to explicitly explain to each one of these providers

저는 그 의사들 각자에게 따지고 싶었습니다.

how they were treating me,

나를 어떻게 대했는지

that it was belittling and sexist,

저를 무시한 건 성차별이라고 말이죠.

and I didn't have to take it.

그들 행동을 받아들일 수 없었습니다.

But I did take it.

하지만 받아들였죠.

I swallowed every sharp word in my throat,

저는 그 모든 날카로운 말을 삼키며

clenched my jaw, and instead

이를 악물고서, 그 대신에

answered each one of their condescending questions and statements.

그들의 거들먹거리는 질문에 하나씩 대답했습니다.

I had come here looking for objectivity and support

저는 객관성과 지지를 구하려고 이곳에 왔습니다.

and instead I felt dismissed and silenced,

그렇지만 대신 실망스럽고 말도 하기 싫은 느낌이였어요.

and I hated myself for it.

저 자신이 싫어졌어요.

I hated that I was letting people disrespect me repeatedly.

But this was my one shot.

하지만 그게 처음이자 마지막이었습니다.

That was one of multiple consultations that I had to go to.

At one point, I had seen five or six medical professionals in the same hour.

어떤 면에서는 대여섯 명의 전문 의료인을 한번에 만나는 기회가 되었죠.

The door to the exam room felt more like the door to a clown car.

진료실이 마치 비좁은 차 안처럼 느껴질 정도였으니까요.

There's my primary,

제 주치의가 있었고

there's his colleague,

그의 동료 의사도 있었고

the director, OK.

그리고 병원장까지 있었죠.

It felt like I was asking them to infect me with smallpox

마치 천연두 주사를 맞는 아이같은 느낌이었어요.

instead of, I don't know, obtain birth control.

피임 수술을 받으려는 사람이 아니고 말이죠.

But I didn't waver,

그래도 저는 흔들리지 않았어요.

and I was persistent,

끈질기게 물고 늘어졌습니다.

and I eventually convinced one of them to allow the procedure.

마침내 그중 한 명을 설득했죠.

And even as I am in the room, signing the consent forms

심지어 제가 그 방에서 동의서에 서명을 하고

and getting the hormone shots and tying up loose ends ...

호르몬 주사를 맞고 마무리를 지으려고 하는 순간까지도

my doctor is shaking his head in disapproval.

의사는 못마땅한 듯이 머리를 가로저었습니다.

"You'll change your mind."

"곧 생각이 바뀔 거예요."라면서요.

I never really understood

저는 이런 과정을 겪기 전까지는

how strongly this society clings to this role

이 사회가 여성에게 이런 역할을 얼마나 강하게 요구하는지 전혀 몰랐습니다.

until I went through this.

I experienced firsthand, repeatedly,

저는 반복해서 직접 경험했습니다.

how people, be it medical providers,

의료진, 동료, 타인들 누구라 할 것 없이 모두가

colleagues, strangers,

were literally unable to separate me being a woman

엄마라는 역할과 여성의 역할을 분리해서 보지 않는다는 것을요.

from me being a mother.

And I've always believed that having children

저는 항상 아이를 가지는 것은

was an extension of womanhood, not the definition.

여성이라는 연장 선상에 있는 것이지 주어진 의무는 아니라고 믿었어요.

I believe that a woman's value

저는 여성의 가치가 절대로

should never be determined by whether or not she has a child,

그녀가 아이를 가졌는지의 유무로 판단되어서는 안된다고 믿습니다.

because that strips her of her entire identity

왜냐하면 그것이 성인으로서 여성의 정체성을 없앨 수 있기 때문입니다.

as an adult unto herself.

Women have this amazing ability to create life,

여성은 생명을 창조하는 놀라운 능력이 있습니다.

but when we say that that is her purpose,

하지만 바로 그것이 여성으로서 삶의 목적이라면

that says that her entire existence is a means to an end.

여성의 존재 가치는 의미가 없습니다.

It's so easy to forget the roles that society places on us

우리가 쉽게 간과하는 것은

사회가 여성에게 전가하는 그 역할이 단순한 자격 이상이라는 사실입니다.

are so much more than mere titles.

What about the weight that comes with them,

그 역할이 주는 부담감과

the pressure to conform to these standards ...

그 표준에 따라야 한다는 압박감은 어쩌죠.

the fear associated with questioning them,

그것에 문제 제기를 하는 것이 두려워서

and the desires that we cast aside to accept them?

다 포기하고 받아들이자는 유혹은 또 어떻고요.

There are many paths to happiness and fulfillment.

행복과 만족을 찾는 길은 많습니다.

They all look very different,

사람마다 다르죠.

but I believe that every one

하지만 제 생각에는

is paved with the right to self-determination.

누구나 자신의 결정을 따르는 것이 옳다고 믿습니다.

I want women to know that your choice to embrace or forego motherhood

여성들이 이걸 알았으면 해요.

엄마가 된다는 여러분의 선택은

is not in any way tied to your worthiness or identity

배우자, 성인, 여성으로서 가치나 정체성과는 관련이 없다는 것입니다.

as spouses, as adults, or as women ...

and there absolutely is a choice behind maternity,

엄마가 된다는 것은 순전히 선택의 문제입니다.

and it is yours

여러분의 선택입니다.

and yours alone.

여러분 혼자 만의 선택이에요.
