I could share with you

a little story about myself.

TD: From the time I was very young, onward,

幼少期から ずっと

I was given

私は様々な責任を

a lot of different responsibilities,

たくさん負っていました

and it always seemed to me, when I was young,

子どもの頃 常に感じていたのは すべてが

that everything was laid out before me.

用意されているということでした

All of the plans for me were already made.

すべての計画は すでに出来上がっていました

I was given the clothes that I needed to wear

着るべき服を与えられ

and told where I needed to be,

どこに行けばよいか指示されました

given these very precious

この非常に尊い

and holy looking robes to wear,

聖人のような法衣を与えられて

with the understanding

これが重要で神聖なものだと

that it was something sacred or important.

TD: But before that kind of formal lifestyle happened for me,

I was living in eastern Tibet with my family.

チベット東部に家族と住んでいました

And when I was seven years old,

私が７歳の時

all of a sudden,

突然

a search party arrived at my home.

探索チームが家に やってきたのです

They were looking the next Karmapa,

彼らは次のカルマパを探していました

and I noticed they were talking to my mom and dad,

私は彼らが両親と 話しているのに気づきました

and the news came to me that they were telling me

それから 私がカルマパだと

that I was the Karmapa.

And these days, people ask me a lot,

how did that feel.

How did that feel when they came and whisked you away,

and your lifestyle completely changed?

生活が一変した時 どういう感じか

And what I mostly say is that,

だいたい私が言うのは

at that time,

it was a pretty interesting idea to me.

とても面白いアイデアだと思った ということです

I thought that things would be pretty fun

これは楽しそうだと思ったのです

and there would be more things to play with.

きっと いろんなもので 遊べるんだろうと

(Laughter)

TD: But it didn't turn out to be so fun and entertaining,

しかし 想像とは違い 面白くて楽しいことには

as I thought it would have been.

なりませんでした

I was placed

私は とても厳格に

in a pretty strictly controlled environment.

管理される環境に置かれました

And immediately,

そして すぐに

a lot of different responsibilities,

多くの責任を負いました

in terms of my education and so forth, were heaped upon me.

教育など いろいろなことを 山ほど与えられました

I was separated, largely, from my family,

including my mother and father.

I didn't have have many personal friends

一緒に時間を過ごす友人も

to spend time with,

but I was expected to perform

these prescribed duties.

So it turned out that my fantasy

about an entertaining life of being the Karmapa

wasn't going to come true.

It more felt to be the case to me

that I was being treated like a statue,

像のように扱われ

and I was to sit in one place

像のように 一つの所に

like a statue would.

座っているようなものでした

TD: Nevertheless, I felt that,

それにも関わらず 私は

even though I've been separated from my loved ones --

愛する人々から離されていても―

and, of course, now I'm even further away.

もちろん 今はもっと 離れてしまったのですが

When I was 14, I escaped from Tibet

14歳の時 私はチベットから逃げ出し

and became even further removed

母や父

from my mother and father,

親戚や友人

my relatives, my friends

そして祖国から

and my homeland.

ますます遠く離れてしまいました

But nevertheless,

にもかかわらず

there's no real sense of separation from me in my heart,

私の心の中には 別離という感覚は全くなく

in terms of the love that I feel

彼らに対する私の愛が

for these people.

離れることは なかったのです

I feel, still, a very strong connection of love

私は今も 彼らや祖国に対する愛に

for all of these people

とても強いつながりを

and for the land.

TD: And I still do

頻繁ではありませんが

get to keep in touch with my mother and father,

私は今でも母や父と

albeit infrequently.

連絡を取り合っています

I talk to my mother

ごくたまに ですが

once in a blue moon on the telephone.

母と電話で話します

And my experience is that,

母と話している時

when I'm talking to her,

with every second that passes

会話の中で

during our conversation,

一秒一秒が過ぎるごとに

the feeling of love that binds us

私たちを 結びつけている愛が

is bringing us closer and closer together.

より一層 私たちを近づけているという 感覚です

TD: So those were just a few remarks

about my personal background.

ほんの一部を ご紹介しました

And in terms of other things that I wanted to share with you,

他に皆さんにお伝えしたいのは

in terms of ideas,

アイデアに関してです

I think it's wonderful to have a situation like this,

このような場は素晴らしいと思います

where so many people from different backgrounds and places

出身地や経歴の異なる多くの人々が

can come together,

集まって

exchange their ideas

意見交換をし

and form relationships of friendship with each other.

友情を築くという環境です

And I think that's symbolic

これは私たちの一般的な 世界の見方を

of what we're seeing in the world in general,

象徴していると思います

that the world is becoming smaller and smaller,

世界は どんどん小さくなっており

and that all of the peoples in the world

世界の全ての人が つながる機会を

are enjoying more opportunities for connection.

That's wonderful,

これは素晴らしいことですが

but we should also remember

忘れてはならないこともあります

that we should have a similar process happening on the inside.

同様の変化を私たちの内面にも 起こすべきだということです

Along with outward development

外側で起こっている進歩や

and increase of opportunity,

機会の増加と並行して

there should be inward development

内側の進歩や

and deepening of our heart connections

心のつながりの深化が

as well as our outward connections.

外側のつながりと同様に 起きるべきなのです

So we spoke and we heard some

この１週間 私たちはデザインについて

about design this week.

いくつかの話をし 聞いてきました

I think that it's important for us to remember

私が重要だと思うのは

that we need

私たちは心のデザインに関して

to keep pushing forward

努力を推し進めることを

on the endeavor

続ける必要があると

of the design of the heart.

We heard a lot about technology this week,

and it's important for us to remember

to invest a lot of our energy

in improving the technology of the heart.

TD: So, even though I'm somewhat happy

about the wonderful developments that are happening in the world,

still, I feel a sense of impediment,

when it comes

to the ability that we have

to connect with each other on a heart-to-heart, or a mind-to-mind, level.

I feel that there are some things

TC: My relationship

to this concept of heart-to-heart connection, or mind-to-mind connection,

because, as a spiritual leader, I'm always attempting

to open my heart to others

and offer myself up

for heart-to-heart and mind-to-mind connections

in a genuine way with other people,

I've always been advised

that I need to emphasize intelligence

over the heart-to-heart connections,

because, being someone in a position like mine,

if I don't rely primarily on intelligence,

then something dangerous may happen to me.

So it's an interesting paradox at play there.

But I had a really striking experience once,

when a group from Afghanistan

アフガニスタンから来た 一団が

came to visit me,

私の所を訪ねてきた時

and we had a really interesting conversation.

とても興味深い会話をしたのです

TD: So we ended up talking about the Bamiyan Buddhas,

バーミヤンの仏像の話になりました

which, as you know,

皆さんも ご存じのように

were destroyed some years ago in Afghanistan.

何年か前にアフガニスタンで 破壊されたものです

But the basis of our conversation

しかし 私たちの会話は

was the different approach to spirituality

イスラム教と仏教の 伝統的側面からの

on the part of the Muslim

精神性への取り組み方の違いを

and Buddhist traditions.

基盤にしていました

Of course, in Muslim,

もちろん イスラム教では

because of the teachings around the concept of idolatry,

偶像崇拝の概念に関して 教えがありますから

you don't find as many

神性や精神の解放を

physical representations of divinity

具現化したものを

or of spiritual liberation

仏教のように

as you do in the Buddhist tradition,

見かけることはありません

where, of course, there are many statues of the Buddha

もちろん仏教には多くの仏像が存在し

that are highly revered.

大いに崇拝されています

So, we were talking about the differences

ですから 私たちは

between the traditions

イスラム教と仏教の違いや

and what many people perceived

バーミヤンの仏像が破壊された悲劇を

as the tragedy of the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas,

多くの人が どう捉えているかについて 話していたのですが

but I offered the suggestion

that perhaps we could look at this in a positive way.

What we saw in the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas

was the depletion of matter,

some solid substance

倒れ 崩壊するのを

falling down and disintegrating.

目の当たりにしました

Maybe we could look at that to be more similar

このことを 人々を２種類に分離した壁が

to the falling of the Berlin Wall,

崩れることによって

where a divide

コミュニケーションの促進に扉を開いた

that had kept two types of people apart

あのベルリンの壁の崩壊と

had collapsed and opened up a door

似たようなものと考えることは

for further communication.

できないでしょうか

So I think that, in this way,

このように 私たちには

it's always possible for us

お互いを よりよく理解できるよう

to derive something positive

肯定的に考えることが

that can help us understand one another better.

どんな時も可能なのです

TD: So, with regard to the development

今回 この講演会で

that we've been talking about

私たちが話題にしてきた

here at this conference,

発展という意味で

I really feel

私が強く感じるのは

that the development that we make

私たちが進める発展が

shouldn't create a further burden

私たち人間にとって

for us as human beings,

さらなる重荷を もたらすのではなく

but should be used

私たちの基本的な生き方

to improve

私たちが世界の中で どう生きるか

our fundamental lifestyle

それを改善するために

of how we live in the world.

使われるべきだということです

TD: Of course, I rejoice

もちろん 私は

in the development and the growth and the rise

立派で素晴らしい インドという国で

of the noble land of India, the great country of India,

発展や成長が進んでいることを 喜ばしく思っています

but at the same time, I think,

しかし 同時に

as some of us have acknowledged,

一部の人が認めているように

we need to be aware

この進歩は ある意味で

that some aspects of this rise

私たちの地盤を犠牲にして

are coming at the cost

成り立っているということに

of the very ground

私たちは

on which we stand.

留意する必要があります

So, as we are climbing the tree,

それは木登りに例えるなら

some of the things that we're doing

私たちが木に登るために

in order to climb the tree

are actually undermining

the tree's very root.

And so,

what I think it comes down to

is a question of, not only having information of what's going on,

but paying attention to that

and letting that shift our motivation

to become more sincere

and genuinely positive.

We have hear, this week,

about the horrible sufferings, for example,

世界中の多くの女性が 日々 耐えているような

that so many women of the world

ひどい窮状について

are enduring day-to-day.

話を聞いてきました

We have that information,

こうした情報を得ても

but what often happens to us

よくあるのは 私たちが そのことに

is that we don't really choose to pay attention to it.

注意を払うという選択をしないのです

We don't really choose to allow that

それによって私たちの心の中に

to cause there to be a shift in our hearts.

変化を起こさせるという選択を しないのです

So I think the way forward for the world --

私が思うに 世界が前に進む方法―

one that will bring the path of outer development

外側の発展を

in harmony

本当の幸せの根源と

with the real root of happiness --

調和させる道をもたらす方法は

is that we allow

私たちが持つ情報によって

the information that we have

私たちの心に本当の変化を

to really make a change in our heart.

起こさせることなのです

TD: So I think that sincere motivation

誠実な動機は

is very important for our future well-being,

私たちの将来の幸せや 人間としての幸福感に

or deep sense of well-being as humans,

とても重要だと思います

and I think that means sinking in

そしてそれは 今 従事していることに

to whatever it is you're doing now.

身を入れることでしょう

Whatever work you're trying to do now to benefit the world,

皆さんが今 世界のために励んでいる仕事

sink into that,

それが何であれ そこに身を入れて

get a full taste of that.

仕事を満喫してください

TD: So, since we've been here this week,

今週 私たちは ここに集まって

we've taken millions of breaths, collectively,

and perhaps we haven't witnessed

any course changes

happening in our lives,

but we often miss the very subtle changes.

And I think

that sometimes we develop

grand concepts

of what happiness

might look like for us,

but that, if we pay attention,

we can see that there are little symbols of happiness

in every breath that we take.

TD: So, every one of you who has come here

ここへ来た皆さんは どなたも

is so talented,

とても才能のある方々です

and you have so much to offer to the world,

皆さんは世界に提供できるものを たくさん お持ちです

I think it would be a good note to conclude on then

これをお伝えして 結びの言葉にしようと思います

to just take a moment

ほんの少し時間を取って 私たちが幸運に

to appreciate how fortunate we are

恵まれていることに感謝しましょう

to have come together in this way and exchanged ideas

私たちは こうして集まり 意見交換をし

and really form a strong aspiration

実際に高い志とエネルギーを

and energy within ourselves

我々自身の中に生み出し

that we will take the good

この場を きっかけとする―

that has come from this conference,

善行や機運や

the momentum, the positivity,

前向きな気持ちを取り込み

and we will spread that and plant it

それを広め 世界の隅々に

in all of the corners of the world.

TD: Lakshmi has worked incredibly hard,

ラクシュミは信じられないくらい よくやってくれました

even in inviting me,

私を招くだけでも 大変なのに

let alone everything else that she has done

この講演の実現のために 彼女が

to make this happen,

尽力してくれたのは 勿論ですが

and I was somewhat resistant at times,

私は ちょっと登壇を渋っていたのです

and I was also very nervous throughout this week.

さらに今週に入って 非常に神経質になっていました

I was feeling under the weather and dizzy and so forth,

気分が すぐれず 目まいなども ありました

and people would ask me, why.

その理由を聞かれれば

I would tell them, "It's because I have to talk tomorrow."

「明日 講演しなくちゃならないんだ」 と答えていました

And so Lakshmi had to put up with me through all of that,

ラクシュミは そんな私に 付き合わなければならなかったのです

but I very much appreciate

しかし 私は彼女が ここへ

the opportunity she's given me

来る機会を与えてくれたことに

to be here.
