TD: But before that kind of formal lifestyle happened for me,

I was living in eastern Tibet with my family.

And when I was seven years old,

all of a sudden,

a search party arrived at my home.

They were looking the next Karmapa,

and I noticed they were talking to my mom and dad,

and the news came to me that they were telling me

And what I mostly say is that,

at that time,

it was a pretty interesting idea to me.

I thought that things would be pretty fun

and there would be more things to play with.

TD: But it didn't turn out to be so fun and entertaining,

as I thought it would have been.

I was placed

in a pretty strictly controlled environment.

a lot of different responsibilities,

in terms of my education and so forth, were heaped upon me.

So it turned out that my fantasy

It more felt to be the case to me

that I was being treated like a statue,

and I was to sit in one place

like a statue would.

TD: Nevertheless, I felt that,

even though I've been separated from my loved ones --

and, of course, now I'm even further away.

When I was 14, I escaped from Tibet

and became even further removed

from my mother and father,

there's no real sense of separation from me in my heart,

I think it's wonderful to have a situation like this,

That's wonderful,

Along with outward development

and increase of opportunity,

there should be inward development

भीतरी विकास भी होना चाहिए

and deepening of our heart connections

और बाहरी संबंध पनपने के साथ-साथ

as well as our outward connections.

हृदय के संबंध भी गहरे होने चाहिए.

So we spoke and we heard some

इस सप्ताह हमने डिजाइन के बारे में

about design this week.

सुना और बातें की हैं.

I think that it's important for us to remember

मुझे लगता है कि यह बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है कि

that we need

to keep pushing forward

We heard a lot about technology this week,

I feel that there are some things

that are getting in the way.

TC: My relationship

to this concept of heart-to-heart connection, or mind-to-mind connection,

is an interesting one,

because, as a spiritual leader, I'm always attempting

to open my heart to others

and offer myself up

for heart-to-heart and mind-to-mind connections

in a genuine way with other people,

but at the same time,

I've always been advised

मैं इस बात पर ज़ोर दूं कि

that I need to emphasize intelligence

हृदय-से-हृदय के संपर्क के ऊपर

over the heart-to-heart connections,

मैं बुद्धि की महत्ता को दर्शाऊं

because, being someone in a position like mine,

क्योंकि मेरी जैसी स्थिति में होने के कारण

if I don't rely primarily on intelligence,

then something dangerous may happen to me.

So it's an interesting paradox at play there.

But I had a really striking experience once,

when a group from Afghanistan

came to visit me,

and we had a really interesting conversation.

TD: So we ended up talking about the Bamiyan Buddhas,

which, as you know,

were destroyed some years ago in Afghanistan.

But the basis of our conversation

was the different approach to spirituality

Of course, in Muslim,

because of the teachings around the concept of idolatry,

you don't find as many

physical representations of divinity

एवं मुक्ति का स्वरूप उस प्रकार नहीं मिलता है

or of spiritual liberation

जैसा यह बौद्ध परम्परा में है

as you do in the Buddhist tradition,

जहां बुद्ध की अनेक प्रतिमाओं की

where, of course, there are many statues of the Buddha

ईश्वरतुल्य जानकार पूजा की जाती है

that are highly revered.

और अपार आदर किया जाता है.

So, we were talking about the differences

इस तरह हमने इन परम्पराओं के

between the traditions

मध्य स्थित अंतर पर चर्चा की

and what many people perceived

हमारे ऊपर बामियान की प्रतिमाओं को

as the tragedy of the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas,

धवस्त करने की त्रासदी का कैसा प्रभाव पड़ा.

but I offered the suggestion

पर मैंने यह सुझाव भी दिया

that perhaps we could look at this in a positive way.

कि हम इसे भी सकारात्मक रूप से देख सकते हैं.

What we saw in the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas

हमने बामियान के बुद्धों के ध्वंसन को

was the depletion of matter,

पदार्थ के अवक्षय के रूप में देखा,

some solid substance

जैसे कुछ ठोस पदार्थ

falling down and disintegrating.

ऊपर से गिरकर बिखर गया.

Maybe we could look at that to be more similar

to the falling of the Berlin Wall,

where a divide

जहाँ दो प्रकार के व्यक्तियों को

that had kept two types of people apart

एक-दूसरे से अलग रखनेवाली दीवार गिर गयी

had collapsed and opened up a door

और इस घटना ने सम्पर्क और सम्बन्ध

for further communication.

विकसित करने का नया मार्ग दिया.

So I think that, in this way,

तो मुझे लगता है कि इस प्रकार

it's always possible for us

यह सदैव संभव है कि

to derive something positive

हम किसी सकारात्मक स्तर पर आ जाएँ

that can help us understand one another better.

जिससे हम एक-दूसरे को बेहतर समझ सकें.

TD: So, with regard to the development

TD: विकास के संदर्भ में

that we've been talking about

इस कांफ्रेंस में हम सभी

here at this conference,

जिसकी बात कर रहे हैं,

I really feel

मुझे यह लगता है

that the development that we make

कि इससे जो भी विकास हो

shouldn't create a further burden

वह हमारे ऊपर कोई बोझ न डाले

for us as human beings,

बल्कि हमारी मूलभूत

but should be used

जीवनशैली में सुधार लाये

to improve

ताकि हम सभी

our fundamental lifestyle

विश्व में

of how we live in the world.

बेहतर तरीके से जी सकें.

TD: Of course, I rejoice

TD: यह सत्य है कि

in the development and the growth and the rise

मैं इस महान देश भारत की पवित्र भूमि के

of the noble land of India, the great country of India,

उत्थान और विकास से बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ पर

but at the same time, I think,

उसी समय मैं यह भी सोचता हूँ

as some of us have acknowledged,

कि हम लोगों में से कुछ यह जानते हैं

we need to be aware

कि हमें जागरूक होना चाहिए

that some aspects of this rise

क्योंकि हम इस विकास के कुछ पहलुओं की

are coming at the cost

उस रूप मे बड़ी भारी कीमत चुका रहे हैं

of the very ground

जिससे हमारे विकास करने पर

on which we stand.

प्रश्नचिह्न लगने लगे हैं.

So, as we are climbing the tree,

जैसे-जैसे हम वृक्ष के ऊपर चढ़ रहे हैं

some of the things that we're doing

तब वृक्ष पर आरोहण की प्रक्रिया में

in order to climb the tree

हम वे काम कर रहे हैं

are actually undermining

जिनसे इस वृक्ष की

the tree's very root.

जड़ ही नष्ट हो रही है.

And so,

ऐसे में,

what I think it comes down to

मुझे यह लगता है कि

is a question of, not only having information of what's going on,

हमें न केवल इसका बोध होना चाहिए

but paying attention to that

बल्कि हमें ध्यानपूर्वक अपनी प्रेरणा को

and letting that shift our motivation

इसपर केन्द्रित करना चाहिए

to become more sincere

ताकि इसके वास्तविक शुद्ध

and genuinely positive.

एवं सकारात्मक परिणाम आयें.

We have hear, this week,

about the horrible sufferings, for example,

यहाँ सुना है कि विश्व में

that so many women of the world

असंख्य महिलायें दिन-प्रतिदिन

are enduring day-to-day.

घोर कष्टप्रद जीवन जी रही हैं.

We have that information,

इस बात की जानकारी हमें है

but what often happens to us

पर अक्सर यह होता है कि

is that we don't really choose to pay attention to it.

हम इसपर ध्यान ही नहीं देना चाहते.

We don't really choose to allow that

हम इस बात का मौक़ा ही नहीं देते

to cause there to be a shift in our hearts.

कि यह चीज़ हमारे ह्रदय पर कुछ प्रभाव डाले.

So I think the way forward for the world --

मुझे लगता है कि --

one that will bring the path of outer development

दुनिया यह कर सकती है

in harmony

जिससे हमारे बाहरी विकास का

with the real root of happiness --

हमारी खुशियों से सीधा तालमेल हो --

is that we allow

- इसका उपाय यह है कि

the information that we have

हम इन जानकारियों से

to really make a change in our heart.

अपने ह्रदय को द्रवित होने दें.

TD: So I think that sincere motivation

TD: मुझे लगता है कि हमारे बेहतर भविष्य के लिए

is very important for our future well-being,

या मनुष्य होने के सुखद अहसास के लिए

or deep sense of well-being as humans,

परिशुद्ध प्रेरणा बहुत आवश्यक है,

and I think that means sinking in

और मैं सोचता हूँ कि इसके लिए

to whatever it is you're doing now.

हमें अपने समस्त कार्यों को भली प्रकार करना चाहिए.

Whatever work you're trying to do now to benefit the world,

sink into that,

get a full taste of that.

TD: So, since we've been here this week,

we've taken millions of breaths, collectively,

हमने सम्मिलित होकर लाखों श्वास लीं हैं,

and perhaps we haven't witnessed

पर शायद हमने अपने जीवन में

any course changes

happening in our lives,

अनुभव नहीं किया है,

but we often miss the very subtle changes.

And I think

that sometimes we develop

कभी-कभी हम

grand concepts

अपनी प्रसन्नता की

of what happiness

विराट संकल्पनाएँ

might look like for us,

but that, if we pay attention,

we can see that there are little symbols of happiness

in every breath that we take.

TD: So, every one of you who has come here

is so talented,

बहुत मेधावी हैं,

and you have so much to offer to the world,

I think it would be a good note to conclude on then

मेरे विचार से समापन के समीप हम यह कहना उचित होगा

to just take a moment

कि एक क्षण के लिए

to appreciate how fortunate we are

हम सोचें कि हम कितने भाग्यवान हैं

to have come together in this way and exchanged ideas

and really form a strong aspiration

and energy within ourselves

that we will take the good

even in inviting me,

let alone everything else that she has done

and I was somewhat resistant at times,

I was feeling under the weather and dizzy and so forth,

And so Lakshmi had to put up with me through all of that,

but I very much appreciate
