That phrase turned me into an eye-contact coach.

I'm the mother of Ivan; he's 15 years old.

Ivan has autism,

he doesn't speak,

and he communicates through an iPad,

He was diagnosed when he was two and a half.

I still remember that day painfully.

My husband and I felt really lost;

we didn't know where to begin.

There was no internet,

you couldn't Google information,

so we made those first steps

out of sheer intuition.

Ivan would not maintain eye contact,

he had lost the words that he did know,

and he didn't respond to his name or to anything we asked him,

The only way I could know

what was going on with him,

what he felt,

But that bridge was broken.

How could I teach him about life?

どうやって生きる術を 教えろというのでしょう？

When I did things he liked, he would look at me,

私がイバンの好きなことをすると 彼は私を見てくれ

and we were connected.

私たちは つながりました

So I dedicated myself to working with him on those things,

ですから 全力をあげて イバンが好きなことに一緒に取り組み

so we would have more and more eye-contact moments.

We would spend hours and hours playing tag with his older sister, Alexia,

and when we said: "I caught you!"

he would look around for us,

and at that moment, I could feel he was alive.

We also hold a record for hours spent in a swimming pool.

Ivan always had a passion for water.

I remember when he was two and a half,

on a rainy winter day,

I was taking him to an indoor pool,

because even on rainy days we'd go swimming.

We were on the highway, and I took the wrong exit.

高速道路で 私は出口を 間違えてしまいました

He burst into tears and cried inconsolably, nonstop,

until I turned back.

Only then did he calm down.

落ち着きました

How was it possible that a two and a half year old

自分の名前にすら反応しない ２歳半の子に

didn't respond to his own name,

雨と霧のなか

yet in the middle of the rain and fog, where I couldn't see anything,

一体どうして 正しい道が分かったのでしょうか？

he knew the exact route?

私には何も見えなかったのにです

That's when I realized that Ivan had an exceptional visual memory,

そのとき私は イバンの類まれな視覚的記憶に気づき

and that that would be my way in.

これこそ私の進むべき道だ と思ったのです

So I started taking pictures of everything,

私は あらゆるものを写真に撮り

and teaching him what life was like,

人生がどんなものか教えるのに

showing it to him, picture by picture.

Even now, it's the way Ivan communicates

今でも イバンは そうやって会話します

what he wants,

何がほしいのか

what he needs

何が必要なのか

and also what he feels.

But it wasn't just Ivan's eye contact that mattered.

でも イバンがアイコンタクトすれば それで良いわけではありません

Everyone else's did, too.

他のみんなからのアイコンタクトも必要です

How could I make people see not only his autism,

どうしたら みんなに イバンの自閉症だけではなく

but see him the person

彼の人となりが見てもらえるか

and everything he can give;

彼が与えられること

everything he can do;

彼ができること

the things he likes and doesn't like,

彼が好きなこと嫌いなことを 私たちの場合と同じように

just like any one of us?

見てもらえるか考えました

But for that, I also had to give of myself.

そのためには自己犠牲も必要でした

I had to have the strength to let him go,

彼に任せる強さを 持たねばならなかったのです

which was extremely difficult.

とても辛いことでした

Ivan was 11 years old,

イバンは11歳のとき

and he went for treatment in a neighborhood near our house.

家の近所へ治療に通っていました

One afternoon, while I was waiting for him,

I went into a greengrocer,

八百屋さんに入りました

a typical neighborhood store with a little bit of everything.

何でもちょっとずつ売っている よくある地元のお店です

While doing the shopping,

買い物をしながら

I started talking to Jose, the owner.

I told him about Ivan,

that he had autism,

and that I wanted him to learn to walk down the street by himself,

イバンには 誰かの手を借りなくとも ひとりで街を歩けるようになってほしいこと

without anyone holding his hand.

そんな思いを伝えました

So I decided to ask Jose if Thursdays around 2pm,

そのとき ホセに頼んでみようと決めたのです 毎週木曜日の２時ごろに―

Ivan could come and help him arrange the water bottles on the shelves,

イバンが店に来て 棚に水のボトルを並べるのを手伝っても良いかと

because he loved to organize things.

イバンは 物を整理するのが 大好きなのです

And as a reward, he could buy some chocolate cookies,

そのご褒美に イバンは大好物のチョコクッキーを

which were his favorite.

買って帰ります

He said "yes" right away.

ホセは快諾してくれました

So that's how it went for a year:

そういうわけで１年の間

Ivan would go to Jose's greengrocer,

イバンはホセのお店に行き

help him arrange the shelves of water bottles

水のボトルを並べる手伝いをしました

with the labels perfectly lined up on the same side,

ラベルが完ぺきに同じ方向を 向くように並べるのです

and he would leave happy with his chocolate cookies.

そして チョコクッキーを手に 喜んで帰るのでした

Jose is not an expert in autism.

ホセは自閉症の専門家ではありません

There is no need to be an expert

誰かを迎え入れるのに

nor do anything heroic to include someone.

専門家である必要も 英雄的なことをする必要もありません

We just need to be there --

ただ そこにいれば良いんです

Really, no heroic deed --

英雄的な行為は要らない―

we simply need to be close.

ただ そばにいるだけで良いのです

And if we are afraid of something

もし心配なことがあったり

or we don't understand something,

分からないことがあれば

we need to ask.

聞けばいいんです

Let's be curious

好奇心を持ってください

but never indifferent.

無関心はいけません

Let's have the courage to look each other in the eye,

互いの目を見て向き合う 勇気を持ってください

because by looking,

見ることで

we can open a whole world to someone else.

誰かにつながる新しい世界を 切り開くことができるのです
