David: ambition to be a doctor.

דויד: שואף להיות רופא.

Favorite sport: football. What did he enjoy most?

ספורט מועדף: כדורגל. ממה הוא נהנה ביותר?

Making people laugh.

להצחיק אנשים.

How did he die?

ממה הוא מת?

Tortured to death.

עונה למוות.

Last words said to his mother who was also tortured to death:

מילותיו האחרונות לאמו, שגם עונתה למוות:

"Don't worry. The United Nations are coming."

"אל תדאגי. האו"ם מגיע."

And we never did.

ומעולם לא הגענו.

And that young boy believed our promises

והילד הצעיר הזה האמין בהבטחותינו

that we would help people in difficulty in Rwanda,

שנעזור לאנשים בקשיים ברואנדה,

and we never did.

ולא עשינו זאת.

So we have got to create in this world also

אז עלינו ליצור בעולם זה גם

institutions for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid,

מוסדות לשמירת שלום וסיוע הומניטרי,

but also for reconstruction and security

אבל גם לבניה ולביטחון

for some of the conflict-ridden states of the world.

עבור המדינות בעולם הנמצאות בעימותים.

So my argument today is basically this.

אז הטיעון שלי היום הוא למעשה זה.

We have the means by which we could create a truly global society.

יש לנו את האמצעים ליצירת חברה גלובלית אמיתית.

The institutions of this global society can be created by our endeavors.

המוסדות של חברה גלובלית זו יכולים להיות מוקמים באמצעות פעולותינו.

That global ethic can infuse the fairness and responsibility that is necessary

המוסר העולמי ייצוק את ההגינות והאחריות הנדרשת

for these institutions to work,

כדי שמוסדות אלו יוכלו לתפקד,

but we should not lose the chance in this generation,

אך אל לנו להחמיץ את ההזדמנות בדורינו,

in this decade in particular, with President Obama in America,

בעשור זה באופן מיוחד, כשהנשיא אובמה בארה"ב,

with other people working with us around the world,

עם אנשים נוספים שעובדים עמנו ברחבי העולם,

to create global institutions for the environment,

ליצירת מוסדות גלובליים לסביבה,

and for finance,

ולכלכלה,

and for security and for development,

ולבטחון ולפיתוח,

that make sense of our responsibility to other peoples,

המשתלבים עם אחריותינו לעמים אחרים,

our desire to bind the world together, and

שאיפתנו לחבר את העולם יחדיו,

our need to tackle problems that everybody knows exist.

והרצון שלנו לתקוף בעיות שהכל יודעים שקיימות.

It is said that in Ancient Rome that when Cicero spoke to his audiences,

אומרים שברומא העתיקה, כשקיקרו נאם לקהלו,

people used to turn to each other and say about Cicero, "Great speech."

אנשים פנו זה לזה ואמרו על קיקרו, "נאום נהדר."

But it is said that in Ancient Greece

אבל אומרים שביוון העתיקה

when Demosthenes spoke to his audiences,

כשדמוסתנס נאם בפני קהל

people turned to each other and didn’t say "Great speech."

אנשים פנו זה לזה ולא אמרו "נאום נהדר."

They said, "Let's march."

הם אמרו, "בא נצעד."

We should be marching towards a global society.

אנו צריכים לצעוד לעבר חברה גלובלית.
