I want to introduce you to an amazing woman.

Now, some people's immediate reaction to this idea

As a "why" kid, I thought I could change the world,

Now, I only later came to understand

And if we're to try to help kids like Sonny Boy,

See, there was a change in government,

otherwise, every individual government would have this built-in excuse mechanism

And so this is what we embarked upon.

But this is not about any one organization.

And research data tells us

So we had to somehow recruit and activate millions of citizens

Well, we used the universal language:

We launched the Global Citizen Festival

in the heart of New York City in Central Park,

I had no interest in citizenship purely as some sort of feel-good thing.

For me, citizenship means you have to act, and that's what we required.

And amazingly, it worked.

Last year, more than 155,000 citizens in the New York area alone

कैसे इन बड़े नेताओं का ध्यान

See, you might be thinking to yourself,

वैश्विक मुद्दों पर ला सकते हैं|

how can we possibly persuade world leaders

शायद अमरीकी राजनीतिज्ञ टिप ओ'नील ने ठीक कहा था -

to sustain a focus on global issues?

"सभी राजनीति स्थानीय है"

Indeed, the powerful American politician Tip O'Neill once said,

इस तरह स्थानीय या राज्यीय

"All politics is local."

हितों के लिए काम करके ही

That's what always got politicians elected:

राजनेता निर्वाचित होते हैं|

to seek, gain and hold onto power

ये बात मैंने २१ वर्ष की उम्र में सीखी थी|

through the pursuit of local or at very best national interests.

मेरी मुलाकात तब के ऑस्ट्रलिाई विदेश मंत्री

I experienced this for the first time when I was 21 years old.

- जिनका में नाम नहीं लूंगा - से हुई थी|

I took a meeting

with a then-Australian Foreign Minister who shall remain nameless --

अकेले में मैंने उनको

अपने विचार बताये|

मैंने उंसी कहा -

And behind closed doors,

"मंत्रीजी, ऑस्ट्रेलिया के

I shared with him my passion to end extreme poverty.

पास इस सदी के वैश्विक लक्ष्य को पाने अनोखा मौका है"

I said, "Minister -- Australia has this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

उन्होंने मुझे रोका,

to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

और नकारात्मक रूप से देखा,

We can do this."

और कहा - "हुघ,

And he paused,

विदेशी सहायता की ऐसी की तैसी|"

looked down on me with cold, dismissive eyes,

because it pits the poor in one country against the poor in another.

It pretends we can isolate ourselves and our nations from one another.

ज़रा देखिये क्या हुआ जब हमने रवांडा को, जब हमने

The whole world is our backyard,

सीरिया को नज़रंदाज़ किया,

and we ignore it at our peril.

जब हमने जलवायु परिवर्तन को नज़रंदाज़ किया|

See, look what happened when we ignored Rwanda,

राजनेताओं को इन बातों पे ध्यान देना चाहिए

when we ignore Syria,

क्योंकि जलवायु परिवर्तन, गरीबी

when we ignore climate change.

हम सब को प्रभावित करते हैं|

Political leaders ought to give a "funk"

वैश्विक नागरिक बात को समझते हैं|

because the impact of climate change and extreme poverty

आज का युग वैश्विक नागरिकों के पक्ष में है,

comes right to our shore.

जहाँ हर आवाज़ सुनी जाती है|

Now, global citizens -- they understand this.

क्या आपको याद है,

We live in a time that favors the global citizen,

जब सन् २००० में सहस्राब्दि विकास लक्ष्य लिखे गए थे?

in an age where every single voice can be heard.

तब संचार साधनों की

See, do you remember

पहुँच बहुत सीमित थी|

when the Millennium Development Goals were signed back in the year 2000?

तब कोई सामाजिक मीडिया नहीं था|

The most we could do in those days was fire off a letter

आज, सैंकड़ों लोगों के पास

and wait for the next election.

बहुत से साधन है, ढेर सारी सूचना है,

There was no social media.

प्रभाव के लिए अधिक क्षमता है|

Today, billions of citizens have more tools,

मर्ज़ और उनकी दवा, दोनों हमारे सामने हैं|

more access to information,

ये दुनिया बदल गयी है

more capacity to influence than ever before.

और हम में से जो लोग सरहदों के

Both the problems and the tools to solve them are right before us.

पार देखते हैं, वे सही हैं|

The world has changed,

तो हम कहाँ पहुंचे हैं?

and those of us who look beyond our borders

हमारी मुहिम बाहत अद्भुत है,

are on the right side of history.

जिसमे दुनिया भर से लोग आ रहे हैं, हमें कुछ

So where are we?

बड़ी कामयाबियां भी मिली हैं

So we run this amazing festival,

पर क्या हमने अपना लक्ष्य हासिल किया है?

we've scored some big policy wins,

नहीं!

and citizens are signing up all over the world.

अभी हमारा लक्ष्य बहुत दूर है|

But have we achieved our mission?

वैश्विक नागरिकों के अभियान की संकल्पना

No.

जो वैसे तो स्पष्ट है,

We have such a long way to go.

पर कुछ मायनों में अव्यवहारिक भी

But this is the opportunity that I see.

संयोग से हमारे इस ही युग में है|

The concept of global citizenship,

वैश्विक नागरिकों के रूप में

self-evident in its logic but until now impractical in many ways,

आज हमारे पास तेज़ी से एक सकरात्मक बदलाव

has coincided with this particular moment in which we are privileged to live.

लाने का अवसर है|

We, as global citizens,

आने वाले वर्षों में

now have a unique opportunity to accelerate large-scale positive change

वैश्विक नागरिक, वैश्विक लक्ष्यों को

around the world.

हासिल करने के लिए दुनिया

So in the months and years ahead,

के नेताओं को जवाबदेह बनाएँगे|

global citizens will hold world leaders accountable

वैश्विक नागरिक, गैर सरकारी संस्थाओं के साथ मिल कर

to ensure that the new Global Goals for Sustainable Development

पोलियो व मलेरिया जैसी बीमिरियों का अंत करेंगे|

are tracked and implemented.

वैश्विक नागरिक दुनिया के हर कोने

Global citizens will partner with the world's leading NGOs

से आ कर सकारात्मक बदलाव

to end diseases like polio and malaria.

की गति और बढ़ाएंगे|

Global citizens will sign up in every corner of this globe,

और ये सब हमरी पहुँच में है|

increasing the frequency, quality

कल्पना कीजिये वैश्विक नागरिकों

and impact of their actions.

की सूचित और एकजुट सेना

These dreams are within reach.

जो लाखों करोड़ों की संख्या

Imagine an army of millions

में बदलाव के प्रति काम करे|

growing into tens of millions,

मैंने सन्नी बॉय से संपर्क करने

connected, informed, engaged

की बहुत कोशिश की|

and unwilling to take no for an answer.

पर संपर्क नहीं हो पाया|

Over all these years,

हम सामाजिक मीडिया के पहले मिले,

I've tried to reconnect with Sonny Boy.

और उसका पता सरकार द्वारा बदला जा चुका है

Sadly, I've been unable to.

जैसा अक्सर झुग्गियों में होता है|

We met long before social media,

एक दिन मैं उसके साथ बैठकर

and his address has now been relocated by the authorities,

उसे बताना चाहता हूँ कि

as often happens with slums.

उसके साथ रह कर मैं कितना प्रेरित हुआ|

I'd love to sit down with him,

और उसके कारण ही मैं एक

wherever he is,

जन आंदोलन का महत्व समझा -

and share with him how much the time I spent on Smoky Mountain inspired me.

जहाँ बच्चे स्क्रीन से बहार की दुनिया को देखते हैं -

Thanks to him and so many others,

वैश्विक नागरिक|

I came to understand the importance of being part of a movement of people --

ऐसे वैश्विक नागरिक, जो एकजुट हो कर पूछते हैं - क्यों?

the kids willing to look up from their screens and out to the world,

और जो नकारात्मक सोच को दूर करके,

the global citizens.

इस दुनिया की अद्भुत

Global citizens who stand together,

संभावनाओं को गले लगते हैं|

who ask the question "Why?,"

मैं एक वैश्विक नागरिक हूँ|

who reject the naysayers,

और आप?

and embrace the amazing possibilities of the world we share.
