I want to introduce you to an amazing woman.

Davinia was born in Jamaica, emigrated to the US at the age of 18,

Davinia's impact started a few years ago

when she reached out to all of her friends on Facebook,

A global citizen is someone who self-identifies first and foremost

not as a member of a state, a tribe or a nation,

but as a member of the human race,

and someone who is prepared to act on that belief,

to tackle our world's greatest challenges.

Our work is focused on finding,

supporting and activating global citizens.

They exist in every country

I want to make the case to you today

that the world's future depends on global citizens.

I'm convinced that if we had more global citizens active in our world,

좀 더 많은 세계 시민들이 있다면

then every single one of the major challenges we face --

빈곤, 기후 변화와 양성 불평등에서 생기는

from poverty, climate change, gender inequality --

우리가 직면한 어려운 주요 문제들을

these issues become solvable.

해결할 수 있다고 확신합니다.

They are ultimately global issues,

and they can ultimately only be solved

by global citizens demanding global solutions from their leaders.

Now, some people's immediate reaction to this idea

is that it's either a bit utopian or even threatening.

So I'd like to share with you a little of my story today,

Growing up in Melbourne, Australia,

I was one of those seriously irritating little kids

"And mum -- this haircut.

The worst haircut, I think.

Still terrible.

As a "why" kid, I thought I could change the world,

and it was impossible to convince me otherwise.

And when I was 12 and in my first year of high school,

I started raising money for communities in the developing world.

We were a really enthusiastic group of kids,

and we raised more money than any other school in Australia.

And so I was awarded the chance to go to the Philippines to learn more.

It was 1998.

We were taken into a slum in the outskirts of Manila.

It was there I became friends with Sonny Boy,

who lived on what was literally a pile of steaming garbage.

But don't let the romance of that name fool you,

That night with Sonny Boy and his family changed my life forever,

because when it came time to go to sleep,

we simply laid down on this concrete slab the size of half my bedroom

with myself, Sonny Boy, and the rest of his family,

seven of us in this long line,

with the smell of rubbish all around us

and cockroaches crawling all around.

And I didn't sleep a wink,

but I lay awake thinking to myself,

"Why should anyone have to live like this

when I have so much?

Why should Sonny Boy's ability to live out his dreams

be determined by where he's born,

or what Warren Buffett called 'the ovarian lottery?'"

I just didn't get it,

and I needed to understand why.

Now, I only later came to understand

that the poverty I'd seen in the Philippines

was the result of decisions made or not made, man-made,

by a succession of colonial powers and corrupt governments

Sure, they didn't create Smoky Mountain, but they may as well have.

And if we're to try to help kids like Sonny Boy,

it wouldn't work just to try to send him a few dollars

because the core of the problem lay elsewhere.

And as I worked on community development projects over the coming years

trying to help build schools,

I came to see that community development

We need to confront these challenges

And the best thing I could do

is try to mobilize a large group of citizens back home

to insist that our leaders engage in that systemic change.

That's why, a few years later,

I joined with a group of college friends

in bringing the Make Poverty History campaign to Australia.

We had this dream of staging this small concert

around the time of the G20 with local Aussie artists,

and it suddenly exploded one day

who all agreed to headline our concert.

I got a little bit excited that day, as you can see.

But to our amazement,

the Australian government heard our collective voices,

It felt like --

It felt like this incredible validation.

By rallying citizens together, we helped persuade our government

to do the unthinkable,

and act to fix a problem miles outside of our borders.

But here's the thing:

it didn't last.

See, there was a change in government,

and six years later, all that new money

disappeared.

What did we learn?

We learned that one-off spikes are not enough.

We needed a sustainable movement,

not one that is susceptible to the fluctuating moods of a politician

or the hint of an economic downturn.

And it needed to happen everywhere;

otherwise, every individual government would have this built-in excuse mechanism

that they couldn't possibly carry the burden of global action alone.

And so this is what we embarked upon.

And as we embarked upon this challenge, we asked ourselves,

how do we gain enough pressure and build a broad enough army

We could only think of one way.

We needed to somehow turn that short-term excitement

It had to be part of their identity.

So in 2012, we cofounded an organization that had exactly that as its goal.

And there was only one name for it:

Global Citizen.

But this is not about any one organization.

This is about citizens taking action.

And research data tells us

that of the total population who even care about global issues,

only 18 percent have done anything about it.

It's not that people don't want to act.

It's often that they don't know how to take action,

or that they believe that their actions will have no effect.

So we had to somehow recruit and activate millions of citizens

And as we did so, we discovered something really thrilling,

that when you make global citizenship your mission,

you suddenly find yourself with some extraordinary allies.

See, extreme poverty isn't the only issue that's fundamentally global.

So, too, is climate change,

human rights, gender equality,

even conflict.

We found ourselves shoulder to shoulder

with people who are passionate about targeting all these interrelated issues.

But how did we actually go about recruiting

Well, we used the universal language:

We launched the Global Citizen Festival

in the heart of New York City in Central Park,

and we persuaded some of the world's biggest artists to participate.

We made sure that these festivals coincided

with the UN General Assembly meeting,

so that leaders who need to hear our voices

couldn't possible ignore them.

But there was a twist:

Activism is the currency.

I had no interest in citizenship purely as some sort of feel-good thing.

For me, citizenship means you have to act, and that's what we required.

And amazingly, it worked.

Last year, more than 155,000 citizens in the New York area alone

earned enough points to qualify.

Globally, we've now signed up citizens in over 150 countries around the world.

See, we don't need to create global citizens from nothing.

We're already everywhere.

And this is where I believe we can learn a lot from Davinia,

who started taking action as a global citizen back in 2012.

Here's what she did.

It wasn't rocket science.

Global citizens like Davinia helped persuade the World Bank

But despite all of this momentum,

we face some huge challenges.

Indeed, the powerful American politician Tip O'Neill once said,

"All politics is local."

That's what always got politicians elected:

to seek, gain and hold onto power

through the pursuit of local or at very best national interests.

I experienced this for the first time when I was 21 years old.

I took a meeting

with a then-Australian Foreign Minister who shall remain nameless --

We can do this."

And he paused,

looked down on me with cold, dismissive eyes,

This is, I believe,

Or as my late grandfather would say,

Parochialism offers this false dichotomy

because it pits the poor in one country against the poor in another.

It pretends we can isolate ourselves and our nations from one another.

The whole world is our backyard,

and we ignore it at our peril.

지역주의는 위기를 보고도 무시하는 것과 같습니다.

See, look what happened when we ignored Rwanda,

when we ignore Syria,

시리아를 무시했을 때는 어땠나요?

when we ignore climate change.

Political leaders ought to give a "funk"

정치인들은 '개뿔'같은 관심을 가져야 합니다.

because the impact of climate change and extreme poverty

기후 변화와 빈곤의 여파는

comes right to our shore.

우리 주변에 나타나고 있습니다.

Now, global citizens -- they understand this.

이제, 세계 시민들은 그 점을 이해하고 있습니다.

We live in a time that favors the global citizen,

우리는 지금 세계 시민이 필요한 시대에 살고 있습니다.

in an age where every single voice can be heard.

각자의 목소리 하나하나가 전해지는 시대 말입니다.

See, do you remember

혹시 다들 기억하시나요?

when the Millennium Development Goals were signed back in the year 2000?

'새천년 개발 목표'가 발표됐던 2000년의 상황이요.

The most we could do in those days was fire off a letter

그 때 우리가 할 수 있는 최선은 편지를 보내고

and wait for the next election.

다음 선거까지 기다리는 것이었죠.

There was no social media.

그 때는 소셜 미디어가 없었으니까요.

Today, billions of citizens have more tools,

현재, 수십억의 사람들은 더 많은 도구를 가졌습니다.

more access to information,

정보에 더욱 쉽게 접근할 수 있습니다.

more capacity to influence than ever before.

영향력이 커졌다는 말이죠.

Both the problems and the tools to solve them are right before us.

문제와 그 문제의 해결 도구가 우리 눈 앞에 있습니다.

The world has changed,

세계는 변화하고 있습니다.

and those of us who look beyond our borders

그리고 국경을 넘어 바라보는 사람들이

are on the right side of history.

역사를 올바르게 이끌고 있습니다.

So where are we?

우리의 현재 위치는 어떤가요?

So we run this amazing festival,

우리는 성공적인 축제를 열었고

we've scored some big policy wins,

정치적으로도 몇몇의 큰 승리를 거뒀으며

and citizens are signing up all over the world.

사람들은 점점 저희 활동에 동참하고 있습니다.

But have we achieved our mission?

하지만, 저희가 목표를 달성했을까요?

No.

아닙니다.

We have such a long way to go.

아직 갈 길이 멉니다.

But this is the opportunity that I see.

The concept of global citizenship,

세계 시민이라는 개념.

self-evident in its logic but until now impractical in many ways,

논리적으로는 옳았지만, 현실성이 없었던 개념.

has coincided with this particular moment in which we are privileged to live.

하지만 그 개념은 우리에게 특별하게 주어진 이 시대속에서 가능합니다.

We, as global citizens,

세계 시민으로서 우리는

now have a unique opportunity to accelerate large-scale positive change

세계 모든 곳에, 커다란 긍정적인 변화를 이끌어 낼 수 있는

around the world.

특별한 기회를 얻었습니다.

So in the months and years ahead,

시간이 흘러 몇 년, 몇 달이 지난 후

global citizens will hold world leaders accountable

세계 시민들은 지도자들이 "지속가능한 발전을 위한 목표"가

to ensure that the new Global Goals for Sustainable Development

올바른 방향으로 감시되고 있고 실천되고 있는 것에 대해

are tracked and implemented.

책임 지도록 만들 것입니다.

Global citizens will partner with the world's leading NGOs

세계 시민들은 유명 NGO와 연합하여

to end diseases like polio and malaria.

소아마비나 말라리아같은 병을 퇴치할 것입니다.

Global citizens will sign up in every corner of this globe,

그리고 세계 각국의 사람들이 이 활동에 동참함으로써

increasing the frequency, quality

그들의 행동이 늘어나고 질적으로 발전하며

and impact of their actions.

더욱 더 강력해지는 것을 목격할 것입니다.

These dreams are within reach.

이 목표는 먼 미래의 일이 아닙니다.

Imagine an army of millions

생각해보세요. 수백만 명의 사람들이

growing into tens of millions,

수천만 명의 사람들로 발전해서

connected, informed, engaged

and unwilling to take no for an answer.

Over all these years,

I've tried to reconnect with Sonny Boy.

Sadly, I've been unable to.

We met long before social media,

and his address has now been relocated by the authorities,

Thanks to him and so many others,

I came to understand the importance of being part of a movement of people --

the kids willing to look up from their screens and out to the world,

장막에서 벗어나, 세계를 향해 "왜"라고 질문하는 아이들.

the global citizens.

세계 시민들.

Global citizens who stand together,

우리는 함께 싸울 것이고

who ask the question "Why?,"

"왜?" 라는 질문을 던질 것이며

who reject the naysayers,

부정하는 사람들을 거부할 것입니다.

and embrace the amazing possibilities of the world we share.

그리고 우리 세계의 놀라운 가능성을 기꺼이 받아들일 것입니다.

I'm a global citizen.

전 세계시민입니다.
