What we discovered

is that the popular story we're told about female virginity

महिलोकी प्रचलित कौमार्य की कहानिया सुनकर

is based on two anatomical myths.

The truth has been known in medical communities for over 100 years,

जो की पुरे चिकित्सा व्यवस्थामे सौ सालसे चली आ रही .

yet somehow these two myths continue to make life difficult

for women around the world.

Ellen Støkken Dahl: The first myth is about blood.

एलिन स्टोकेंन डही l: पहली गलत धारणा थी ...खून के बारेमे .

It tells us that the hymen breaks and bleeds

यह हमें बताया जाता है कि हेमेन याने योनी परदा टूटता है और रक्तस्राव होता है

the first time a woman has vaginal sex.

यह होता है पहली बार सम्भोग के समय.

In other words, if there is no blood on the sheets afterwards,

इसका दूसरा मतलब निकलता है अगर खून नही निकला

then the woman was simply not a virgin.

तो वह शुध्द नही .

The second myth is a logical consequence of the first.

दूसरा मिथक पहलेका तार्किक परिणाम है .

Since the hymen is thought to break and bleed,

क्योकि लोग समजते थे योनी से ख़राब खूनका रिसाव होता है.

people also believe that it actually disappears

वे मानते थे की योनिछाद गायब हो जाता है

or is in some way radically altered during a woman's first intercourse.

या कुछ रास्ते में मौलिक रूप से बदल जाता है एक महिला के पहले संभोग के दौरान

If that were true,

अगर यह सच होता

one would easily be able to determine if a woman is a virgin or not

तो हम आसानीसे उसके

by examining her genitals,

जननांग देखकर

by doing a virginity check.

उसके कौमर्यका पता कर लेते.

NDB: So that's our two myths:

Now, this may sound like a minor issue to you.

Why should you care

about an obscure little skin fold on the female body?

एक स्त्री के शारीर में होने वाला एक मामूली बदल लगे?

But the truth is, this is about so much more

लेकिन यह वास्तव है की

than an anatomical misunderstanding.

यह एक बड़ी सरचनात्मक मिथक है शारीरिक रचना की गलत सोच है.

The myths about the hymen have lived on for centuries

योनी पर्देकी यह गलत धारणा कई शतकोसे चल रही है.

because they have cultural significance.

इसका कारण है ....सामाजिक महत्व

They have been used as a powerful tool

पुरुषो ने एक शक्तिशाली अवजार बनाया है,

in the effort to control women's sexuality

स्त्री की कामुकता नियंत्रित करने के लिए

in about every culture, religion and historical decade.

जो आयी है इतिहास तथा संस्कृति से.

Women are still mistrusted,

स्त्री पर आजभी विश्वास नही किया जाता.

shamed,

यह शर्मिंदा करनेवाली बात है.

harmed

चोट पहुचने वाली बात है.

and, in the worst cases, subjected to honor killings

कभी कभी तो उसे मरना पड़ता है.

if they don't bleed on their wedding night.

अगर सुहाग रत पर खून न बहे.

Other women are forced through degrading virginity checks,

स्त्री को कुमारी होने का प्रमाण देकर लज्जित किया जाता है.

simply to obtain a job,

कोई काम प्राप्त करने,

to save their reputation

अपनी लज्जा बचाने,

or to get married.

या शादी करने के लिए,

ESD: Like in Indonesia,

ESD: जैसे की इंडोनेशिया में

where women are systematically examined to enter military service.

मिलिटरी सेवा में जाने के लिए स्त्री की शारीरिक जाच की जाती है.

After the Egyptian uprisings in 2011,

2011 के मिश्र विद्रोह के बाद

a group of female protesters were forced to undergo virginity checks

महिला आन्दोलाको के एक समूह को कौमार्य परीक्षा का सामना करना पड़ा

by their military.

उनके ही मिलिटरी से .

In Oslo, doctors are examining the hymens of young girls

ओस्लो में तो नवजवान लड्कियोका भी योनी परिक्षण करते है

to reassure parents that their children are not ruined.

माँ पिता को आश्वस्त करने की उनकी लडकिया सुरक्षित है .

And sadly, the list goes on.

यह संख्या बढ़ रही है.

Women are so afraid not to live up to the myths about the hymen

योनी सम्बन्धी गलत मिथक से लडकिय बहुत डरती है

that they choose to use different virginity quick fixes

इसलिए वे अन्य तरीकेसे इसका परिक्षण करना पसंद करती है.

to assure a bleeding.

जिससे खून बह सके पहले सम्भोग में

That could be plastic surgery,

इसके लिए उपाय है प्लास्टिक सर्जरी

known as "revirgination,"

पुनर कौमार्य निर्माण,

it could be vials of blood poured on the sheets after sex

या तो वो खून की बोतले इस्तेमाल करती है .

or fake hymens bought online,

बनावटी योनी पर्दा भी इन्टरनेट से खरेदी जाता है

complete with theater blood

जो की नकली खून भी दिखाता है.

and a promise to "kiss your deep, dark secret goodbye."

जो आपका गुपित गुप्त ही रहने देता है हमेशा के लिए

NDB: By telling girls that no deed can be kept secret,

NDB: लडकियों को कहा जाता है की उसकी कोई भी चीज छुपेगी नही

that their bodies will reveal them no matter what,

उनका शरीर कैसे बी करके सच उगलेगा

we have endowed them with fear.

वे भयभीत रहती है.

Girls are afraid of ruining themselves,

लडकिया अपने आपसे बर्बाद होने से डर रही है

either through sport,

वो खेलनसे डरती है.

play,

खेलना नही चाहती ,

tampon use

कपडा नही प्रयोग में लाती

or a sexual activity.

या सेक्स करनेसे डरती है.

We have curtailed their opportunities and their freedoms.

हमने उनकी आज़ादी छीन ली है.

It's time we put an end to the virginity fraud.

समय आया है हमें इसे रोकना चाहिए .

It's time we break the myths about the hymen

इन कहानियोको मिथक को ख़त्म कर देना छाहिये

once and for all.

हमेशा के लिए ,

That's a popular science book about the female genitals.

यह एक लोकप्रिय विद्न्यानिक किताब है महिलाके गुप्तांग के बारे में

And in our experience, people seem to believe

हमारा अनुभव कहता है की लोक विश्वास करते है

that the hymen is some kind of a seal covering the vaginal opening.

योनी परदा योनिका आवरण होता है

In Norwegian, it is even called "the virgin membrane."

नर्वे के लोक इसे कुवारा परदा कहते है

And with this, we picture something fragile,

उसे सुनकर हमने योनोछाद को एक नाजुक ,

something easily destructible,

जोकि आसानीसे टुटा जा सकता है

something you can rip through,

फटता है

perhaps like a sheet of plastic wrapping.

एक प्लास्टिक आवरण की तरह .

You may have wondered why we brought a hula hoop onstage today.

आप सोच रहे होंगे की हम एक हूला हूप क्यों लाये मंचपर

We'll show you.

हम आप को दिखाते है.

Now, it is very hard to hide

जैसे की आप देख सकते है हूला हूप को कुछ हुआ है.

that something has happened to this hoop, right?

इसे छिपाना बहुत कठिन है.

It is different before and after I punched it.

मेरे मुक्केसे इसमें बदलाव आया..

The seal is broken,

आवरण टूट गया ,

and unless we change the plastic,

जब तक हम प्लास्टिक नहीं बदलते

it won't get back to its intact state.

So if we wanted to do a virginity check on this hoop right here,

अगर हा यह पता लगाये की हूला हूप

right now,

that would be very easy.

toतो यह बहुत आसन है .

It's easy to say that this hoop is not a virgin anymore.

NDB: But the hymen is nothing like a piece of plastic

you can wrap around your food,

or a seal.

In fact ...

योनी पर्दा...

it's more like this --

एक रबर बैंड जैसा होता है ...

a scrunchie or a rubber band.

जोकि प्रसरण हो सकता है खीचा जा सकता है .

The hymen is a rim of tissue at the outer opening of the vagina.

योनी के द्वार में एक प्रकारकी उतिया होती है

And usually, it has a doughnut or a half-moon shape

जिसका आकर अर्धचन्द्राकार होता है.

with a large, central hole.

बिचमे एक बड़ा छिद्र होता है

But this varies a lot,

उनमे विभिन्त्ता होती है.

and sometimes hymens can have fringes,

या उसमे बहुत सारे छेद होते है

it can have several holes,

नहीतो उसमे किनारे होते है झालर जैसे

or it can consist of lobes.

उसमे दो भाग होते है

In other words, hymens naturally vary a lot in looks,

कहनेका मतलब यह की योनी आवरण प्राकृतिक रूपसे भिन्न होता है.

and that is what makes it so hard to do a virginity check.

ESD: Now that we know a bit more about the hymen's anatomy,

हमें योनी परदेके शारीरिक रचना का ज्ञान नहीं है.

it's time to get back to our two myths:

दो गालात धरणा के बरे मी जानेंगे.

virgins bleed,

जब योनी से खून बहता है

hymens are lost forever.

योनीपर्दा हमेशा के लिये खो जाता है

But the hymen doesn't have to break at all.

लेकीन वह टूटता नही.

The hymen is like a scrunchie in function as well as in looks.

वह एक खिचाव वाला होता हे रबर जैसा

And you can stretch a scrunchie, right?

खीचा जा सकता है.

(Laughter)

You can stretch a hymen, too.

आप उसे खीच सकते है

In fact, it's very elastic.

वास्तव में वह प्रसारणशील याने खिचावदार होता है,

And for a lot of women,

ज्यादातर महिलओमे,

the hymen will be elastic enough to handle a vaginal intercourse

योनीछाद जरुररी तक प्रसारण होता है संभोग अवस्था मे .

without sustaining any damage.

बिना किसी तकलीफ से.

For other women, the hymen may tear a bit to make room for the penis,

कुछ महिलओमे फट सकता है लिंग को प्रविष्ट करने पर

but that won't make it disappear.

उससे वह गायब नही होगा .

But it may look a bit different from before.

पहलेसे अलग दिखाई पडेगा .

It naturally follows that you can't examine the hymen

इसलिये आप उसका परीक्षण नही कर सकते.

to check for virginity status.

की लाडकी लाडकी कुवारी है या नही.

This was noted over 100 years ago in 1906

1906 मे,

by the Norwegian doctor Marie Jeancet.

नॉर्वे के डॉक्टर ने ...मेरी जन्सेटने पाया ,

She examined a middle-aged sex worker

एक मध्यम आयुके सेक्स वर्कर मे ,

and concluded that her genitalia were reminiscent of a teenage virgin.

उसकी योनी आवरण कुमारी जैसी थी.

But that makes sense, right?

लेकीन क्या यह हम मानते है ?

Because if her hymen was never damaged during sex,

उसका योनोपरदा संभोग दरम्यान कभीभी नष्ट नही हुआ .

then what were we expecting to see?

तो हम क्या उम्मीद कर रहे है ?

ESD: Since hymens come in every shape and form,

ESD: क्योकी योनी परदा अनेक प्रकरो मी आता है

it is difficult to know

यह पट करना मुश्कील है.

if a dent or a fold in it is there because of previous damage

योनी परद का अलग होना पहलेका टूटना दर्शाता है.

or if it's just a normal anatomical variant.

या उसमे कुछ बदलाव हि नही आता.

The absurdity of virgin testing

यह कोई परीक्षा नही कौमार्य जाचनेका यह एक पागलपन है .

is illustrated in a study done on 36 pregnant teenagers.

३६ प्रतिशत कम आयु की लडकियो पर किये गये अभ्यास से

When doctors examined their hymens,

और डोक्टरो की जाच से

they could only find clear signs of penetration

उन्होने दो हि लडकियो मी हि पाया

in two out of the 36 girls.

लिंग प्रविष्ट होने के संकेत .

So unless you believe in 34 cases of virgin births --

क्या आप मानते है यह ३४ लडकिया कुमारी है .

we must all agree

हमे यह मानना होगा

that also our second myth has taken a vital blow.

की हमारी यह दुसरी मान्यता गलत है

You simply cannot look a woman between her legs

आप एक महिला के पैरो मी देख कर

and read her sexual story.

उसके यौन के बरे मी निष्कर्ष नही निकाल सकते

NDB: Like most myths, the myths about the hymen are untrue.

NDB: अन्य कथा जैसे हि यह एक मिथक है

There is no virgin seal that magically disappears after sex,

यह कोई योनी का कवच नही जो संभोग दरम्यान गायब हो जाये.

and half of virgins can easily have sex without bleeding.

की आधी महिला है जो बिना खून बहे यशस्वी संभोग करती है.

We wish we could say that by removing these myths,

हम यह गलत धारणा मन से निकाल दे .

everything would be OK,

इससे सब ठीक हो सक्त है

that shame, harm and honor killings would all just disappear.

लज्जीत होना ,आहत होना, मार डालना यह सब थम जायेगा.

But of course, it's not that simple.

लेकीन यह आसान नही..

Sexual oppression of women comes from something much deeper

स्त्री उत्पिडन इससे भी गहरा है.

than a simple anatomical misunderstanding about the properties of the hymen.

गलत फहिमो के कारण नही .

It's a question of cultural and religious control of women's sexuality.

यह सास्कृतिक, धार्मिक समस्या है स्त्री की कामुकता नियंत्रण करने की

And that is much harder to change.

आसानीसे नही बदलेगी .

But we must try.

पर हमे कोशिश जरी रखनी चाहिये.

ESD: As medical professionals, this is our contribution.

ESD: एक चिकित्सक होने पर यह हमारा योगदान है.

We want every girl, parent and [future] husband to know

हम चाहते है सभी लडकिया ,उनके माता पिता, उनके मंगेतर यह जाने

what the hymen is and how it works.

योनी परदा का यह सत्य उसकी रचना तथा कार्य

We want them to know

वे यह भी जाने

that the hymen can't be used as a proof of virginity.

की योनी परदा होने का सबूत कौमार्य होना नही.

And that way, we can remove one of the most powerful tools

हम इस गलत साधन स्त्री की कामुकता पर

used to control young women today.

नियन्त्रण रखनेका नष्ट करे.

After telling you this,

यह सुनने के बाद

you may wonder what the alternative is,

आपन शयद सोचेंगे की इसका विकल्प क्या है ?

for if we cannot use the hymen as a proof of virginity for women,

अगर हम इससे पता नही क्र सकते तो

then what should we use?

तो कैसे पता करे कौमार्य का ?

We opt for using nothing.

हम कहते है एसा कुछ है ही नही.
