Ellen Støkken Dahl: The first myth is about blood.

It tells us that the hymen breaks and bleeds

여성이 처음 성관계를 가질 때,

the first time a woman has vaginal sex.

처녀막이 터지며 피가 난다고 합니다.

In other words, if there is no blood on the sheets afterwards,

바꿔 말하면,

성관계 후에 피가 안 보인다면 그 여성은 처녀가 아니라는 뜻이 되죠.

then the woman was simply not a virgin.

The second myth is a logical consequence of the first.

두 번째 미신은 첫 번째의 논리적인 결론인데요.

Since the hymen is thought to break and bleed,

처녀막이 터지면서 피가 난다고 믿었기에,

people also believe that it actually disappears

그 이후에 처녀막이 없어진다고 믿었습니다.

or is in some way radically altered during a woman's first intercourse.

혹은 첫 성관계를 하는 과정에서 그 형태가 바뀐다고 생각했죠.

If that were true,

이것이 사실이라면,

one would easily be able to determine if a woman is a virgin or not

여성이 처녀인지 아닌지 쉽게 가려낼 수 있을 겁니다.

by examining her genitals,

여성의 생식기를 검사하거나,

by doing a virginity check.

처녀성 유무의 검사를 통해서 말이죠.

NDB: So that's our two myths:

NDB: 이것이 바로 두 미신입니다:

virgins bleed,

처녀는 피를 흘리고,

and hymens are lost forever.

처녀막이 터져 사라진다는 거죠.

Now, this may sound like a minor issue to you.

사소한 문제라고 생각하는 분도 계실 거예요.

Why should you care

왜 이런 애매한

about an obscure little skin fold on the female body?

작은 피부 조직에 신경써야 하냐고 묻겠죠?

But the truth is, this is about so much more

하지만 실상은, 해부학적 오해 이상의

than an anatomical misunderstanding.

더 심각한 문제가 있다는 것입니다.

The myths about the hymen have lived on for centuries

처녀막에 관한 미신은 수 세기를 걸쳐 존재해왔습니다.

because they have cultural significance.

거기에는 문화적 배경이 있기 때문이죠.

They have been used as a powerful tool

처녀막은 여성을 성적으로 속박하는

in the effort to control women's sexuality

강력한 수단으로 사용되었습니다.

in about every culture, religion and historical decade.

모든 문화, 종교, 역사에서 공통적으로 말이죠.

Women are still mistrusted,

아직까지도 많은 여성들이 불신받고,

shamed,

수치를 당하고,

harmed

해를 입기도 하고,

and, in the worst cases, subjected to honor killings

심하게는 명예살인이라는 죽임까지 당하고 있습니다.

if they don't bleed on their wedding night.

결혼 첫날밤에 피를 보이지 않는다면 말이죠.

Other women are forced through degrading virginity checks,

어떤 여성들은 묘욕적인 처녀성 검사를 강요당하기도 합니다.

simply to obtain a job,

단순히 일자리를 구하기 위해,

to save their reputation

또는 자신의 평판을 유지하거나

or to get married.

결혼하기 위해서 말이죠.

ESD: Like in Indonesia,

ESD: 인도네시아 같은 곳에서는

where women are systematically examined to enter military service.

여성들이 군에 입대하기 위해 조직적인 검사를 거쳐야 합니다.

After the Egyptian uprisings in 2011,

2011년도의 이집트 혁명 후에,

a group of female protesters were forced to undergo virginity checks

여성 시위대들은 군대에 의해 행해지는

by their military.

처녀성 검사를 강요당했습니다.

In Oslo, doctors are examining the hymens of young girls

오슬로에서는 의사가 어린 소녀의 처녀막 검사를 합니다.

to reassure parents that their children are not ruined.

아이가 순결하다는 것을 부모에게 확인시켜주기 위해서죠.

And sadly, the list goes on.

슬프게도, 이런 일들은 수두룩해요.

Women are so afraid not to live up to the myths about the hymen

여성들은 처녀막에 대한 미신에 부응해야 한다는 두려움때문에

that they choose to use different virginity quick fixes

여러 가지 편법으로 처녀성을 보여주려 하기도 합니다.

to assure a bleeding.

성관계 후 출혈을 보이기 위해서죠.

That could be plastic surgery,

성형수술의 일종인

known as "revirgination,"

처녀막 재생수술도 있고

it could be vials of blood poured on the sheets after sex

성관계 후에 침대에 약간의 피를 몰래 흘려놓을 수도 있고

or fake hymens bought online,

인터넷에서 가짜 처녀막을 사서

complete with theater blood

무대용 피를 묻혀 둘 수도 있습니다.

and a promise to "kiss your deep, dark secret goodbye."

그리고는 평생 어두운 비밀을 숨기며 사는 거죠.

NDB: By telling girls that no deed can be kept secret,

NDB: 무슨 짓을 했는지 숨길 수 없고

that their bodies will reveal them no matter what,

결국엔 몸이 진실을 얘기해줄 거라고 말하면서

we have endowed them with fear.

우리는 어린 소녀들을 겁먹게 만들었습니다.

Girls are afraid of ruining themselves,

소녀들은 처녀막이 손상될까봐 두려워하고 있습니다.

either through sport,

운동을 하다가,

play,

놀다가.

tampon use

탐폰 때문에,

or a sexual activity.

아니면 성 행위를 통해서 말이죠.

We have curtailed their opportunities and their freedoms.

우리는 그들의 기회와 자유를 빼앗아 왔습니다.

It's time we put an end to the virginity fraud.

이제 처녀성에 대한 거짓말을 멈추어야 합니다.

It's time we break the myths about the hymen

이제 처녀막에 대한 미신을 완전히 없애야 할 때입니다.

once and for all.

영원히 없애야 해요.

That's a popular science book about the female genitals.

이 책은 여성의 생식기에 관한 유명한 과학 서적입니다.

And in our experience, people seem to believe

저희가 보기에

사람들은 처녀막이 질입구를 막고 있는 막이라고 잘못 알고 있는 것 같습니다.

that the hymen is some kind of a seal covering the vaginal opening.

In Norwegian, it is even called "the virgin membrane."

노르웨이에서는 처녀막을 '순결의 막'이라고 부르기도 하죠.

And with this, we picture something fragile,

이 때문에 찢어지기 쉬운 얇은 막을 상상하게 됩니다.

something easily destructible,

쉽게 손상되고

something you can rip through,

쉽게 찢어지는

perhaps like a sheet of plastic wrapping.

얇은 비닐 막 같은 걸 연상하게 됩니다.

You may have wondered why we brought a hula hoop onstage today.

저희가 왜 훌라후프를 무대 위로 가지고 왔는지 궁금하실 겁니다.

We'll show you.

보여드릴게요.

(Laughter)

Now, it is very hard to hide

자, 이제 분명히 아시겠죠.

that something has happened to this hoop, right?

이 훌라후프가 어떻게 됐는지 보셨죠?

It is different before and after I punched it.

제가 주먹으로 치기 전과 후가 달라요.

The seal is broken,

막이 찢어진 것이죠.

and unless we change the plastic,

막을 새로 바꾸지 않는 한,

it won't get back to its intact state.

처음 상태로 되돌릴 수 없습니다.

So if we wanted to do a virginity check on this hoop right here,

right now,

that would be very easy.

It's easy to say that this hoop is not a virgin anymore.

NDB: But the hymen is nothing like a piece of plastic

NDB: 하지만 처녀막은 음식을 덮어두는

you can wrap around your food,

비닐 포장과 전혀 달라요.

or a seal.

얇은 막도 아니죠.

In fact ...

실제로는

it's more like this --

이런 형태에 가깝습니다.

a scrunchie or a rubber band.

머리끈이나 고무줄 같은 형태죠.

The hymen is a rim of tissue at the outer opening of the vagina.

처녀막은 질 입구 바깥 쪽에 둘러있는 세포 조직입니다.

And usually, it has a doughnut or a half-moon shape

일반적으로 도넛이나 반달 모양이죠.

with a large, central hole.

가운데 큰 구멍이 있고요.

But this varies a lot,

하지만 모양은 다양합니다.

and sometimes hymens can have fringes,

주변이 술장식 모양인 경우도 있고,

it can have several holes,

여러 구멍이 있기도 하고,

or it can consist of lobes.

잎사귀가 모여있는 모양도 있죠.

In other words, hymens naturally vary a lot in looks,

즉, 처녀막은 자연적으로 다양한 형태를 띄고 있습니다.

and that is what makes it so hard to do a virginity check.

그렇기 때문에 모습만으로 처녀성 확인은 거의 불가능하죠.

ESD: Now that we know a bit more about the hymen's anatomy,

ESD: 처녀막의 의학적 개념을 조금 더 알게 됐으니

it's time to get back to our two myths:

아까 언급한 두 가지 미신을 다시 얘기해보겠습니다.

virgins bleed,

순결을 잃으면 피를 보이고

hymens are lost forever.

처녀막은 영원히 사라진다.

But the hymen doesn't have to break at all.

하지만 처녀막은 절대로 찢어지는 것이 아닙니다.

The hymen is like a scrunchie in function as well as in looks.

처녀막은 모양이나 기능면에서 머리끈과 비슷합니다.

And you can stretch a scrunchie, right?

머리끈은 늘릴 수 있잖아요?

(Laughter)

(웃음)

You can stretch a hymen, too.

처녀막도 이렇게 늘어납니다.

In fact, it's very elastic.

실제로는 매우 유연하죠.

And for a lot of women,

그래서 많은 여성들은

the hymen will be elastic enough to handle a vaginal intercourse

성관계를 한 후에도 처녀막에 손상이 없을 정도로

without sustaining any damage.

매우 유연한 형태를 갖고 있습니다.

For other women, the hymen may tear a bit to make room for the penis,

남성 성기를 위한 공간을 만들려고 처녀막이 조금 찢어지는 경우는 있죠.

but that won't make it disappear.

하지만 사라지는 것은 아닙니다.

But it may look a bit different from before.

하지만 모양이 조금 변할 수는 있어요.

It naturally follows that you can't examine the hymen

NDB: 처녀막을 확인하는 것으로는

to check for virginity status.

처녀인지 판단할 수 없는 건 당연합니다.

This was noted over 100 years ago in 1906

이 사실은, 이미 100년 전인 1906년에

by the Norwegian doctor Marie Jeancet.

노르웨이 의사인 마리 션세트가 밝혀냈죠.

She examined a middle-aged sex worker

그녀는 중년의 성매매 여성을 검사하다가

and concluded that her genitalia were reminiscent of a teenage virgin.

그 여성의 성기가 순결한 십대와 다를 바 없다는 결론을 내렸습니다.

But that makes sense, right?

그런데 말이 되나요?

Because if her hymen was never damaged during sex,

성관계가 있었는데도 처녀막이 손상되지 않았다면

then what were we expecting to see?

과연 어떤 모습이었을까요?

ESD: Since hymens come in every shape and form,

ESD: 처녀막의 모양은 다양하기 때문에

it is difficult to know

함몰이나 변형이 있더라도

if a dent or a fold in it is there because of previous damage

이전에 어떤 손상이 있었는지

or if it's just a normal anatomical variant.

혹은 자연적인 변형인지 원인을 알 수 없습니다.

The absurdity of virgin testing

처녀성 검사의 불합리성은

is illustrated in a study done on 36 pregnant teenagers.

36명의 십대 미혼모를 대상으로 한 연구 결과에서도 나타납니다.

When doctors examined their hymens,

의사들이 그들의 처녀막을 검사한 결과,

they could only find clear signs of penetration

뚜렷한 성교 흔적이 있는 경우는

in two out of the 36 girls.

36명 중에 단 2명 뿐이었습니다.

So unless you believe in 34 cases of virgin births --

34명이 동정녀 잉태가 아니고서야

(Laughter)

we must all agree

우리는 모두

that also our second myth has taken a vital blow.

두 번째 미신도 역시 거짓임을 인정해야겠죠.

You simply cannot look a woman between her legs

여자의 다리 사이를 검사해보는 것만으로

and read her sexual story.

그녀의 성생활을 판단할 수는 없습니다.

NDB: Like most myths, the myths about the hymen are untrue.

NDB: 대부분의 미신처럼 처녀막에 대한 미신도 거짓입니다.

There is no virgin seal that magically disappears after sex,

성관계 후에 사라지는 처녀막도 존재하지 않습니다.

and half of virgins can easily have sex without bleeding.

그리고 처녀 중에서 절반은 성관계 후에 출혈을 보이지 않습니다.

We wish we could say that by removing these myths,

저희는 이런 잘못된 믿음을 없앰으로써

everything would be OK,

모든 것을 바로 잡고,

that shame, harm and honor killings would all just disappear.

수치심, 고통, 명예살인이 모두 사라지길 바랍니다.

But of course, it's not that simple.

하지만 늘 간단한 것은 아니죠.

Sexual oppression of women comes from something much deeper

여성에 대한 성적 억압에는 더 심각한 이유가 있으니까요.

than a simple anatomical misunderstanding about the properties of the hymen.

단순히 처녀막의 해부학적 특징을 몰랐다는 것 이상의 문제가 있습니다.

It's a question of cultural and religious control of women's sexuality.

문제는 문화, 종교적으로 여성성을 구속한다는 것입니다.

And that is much harder to change.

정말 바꾸기 힘든 부분이지만

But we must try.

우리 노력이 반드시 필요합니다.

ESD: As medical professionals, this is our contribution.

ESD: 이것이 의학 전문가로서 저희가 할 일입니다.

We want every girl, parent and [future] husband to know

세상의 모든 소녀와 그 부모, 그리고 미래의 남편들이

what the hymen is and how it works.

처녀막에 대한 진실과 기능을 제대로 이해하게 되길 바랍니다.

We want them to know

그리고 처녀막이

that the hymen can't be used as a proof of virginity.

순결의 상징이 아니라는 것을 깨닫게 되길 바랍니다.

And that way, we can remove one of the most powerful tools

그렇게 되면 어린 여성들을 구속하는 가장 치명적인 수단은

used to control young women today.

사라지게 될 것입니다.

After telling you this,

오늘 저희 얘기를 듣고 나서

you may wonder what the alternative is,

처녀임을 아는 다른 방법이 있을지 궁금하실 겁니다.

for if we cannot use the hymen as a proof of virginity for women,

처녀막이 순결함을 판단하는 증거가 될 수 없다면

then what should we use?

어떤 방법으로 알 수 있을까요?

We opt for using nothing.
