At just 12 years old,

لە تەمەنی ١٢ ساڵیدا،

I witnessed the devastating impact pollution was having on Iran,

من شاهێدی کاریگەری ئەو وێرانکارە پیسە بووم لەسەر ئێران،

my parents' home country.

وڵاتی دایک و باوکم.

On one of my summer visits,

لە یەکێک لە سەردانە هاوینەییەکانم،

I witnessed smog so heavy it completely blanketed the air,

دوکەڵ و تۆزێکی زۆرم بینی کە ئاسمانی قانگ دابوو بە تەواوەتی،

obscuring the stars I wanted to trace out of the night sky.

ونبوونی ئەو ئەستێرانەی کە دەمویست لە شەودا شوێنیان بکەوم.

I decided to read more about climate change in Iran,

بڕیارمدا تا زیاتر بخوێنمەوە لەسەر گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا،

and I became increasingly alarmed,

و زۆر وریابوومەوە (هەڵسام لە خەو)،

particularly when I learned the fact that temperatures in the Middle East

بەتایبەتی کاتێک ئەو راستیەم بۆ دەرکەوت کە پلەیگەرمی رۆژهەڵاتی ناوەند

were rising more than twice the global average.

زیاتر دوو هێندە زیاد دەکەن لە چاو تێکڕای جیهان.

Armed with this knowledge, I decided to confront my relatives.

بەم زانیارە بەهێزە، بڕیارمدا خزمەکانم رازیبکەم.

But I was shocked when they informed me

بەڵام شۆکبووم کاتێک پێیان وتم

that they knew almost nothing about climate change.

کە هیچ نازانن لەسەر گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا.

So I began to dig into the lack of climate education in Iran,

بۆیە دەستم کرد بە لێکۆڵینەوە لەسەر کەمتەرخەمی لە پەروەردەی کەش و هەوای ئێران،

and I found a study that read

توێژینەوەیەکم دۆزیەوە کە دەڵێت

only five percent of Iranian students

تەنها سەتا پێنجی خوێندکاری ئێرانی

could properly explain the greenhouse gas effect.

دەتوانێ کاریگەری گازەکانی بەرگەهەوای زەوی روونبکاتەوە.

As I continued to scour the internet for more information,

و بەردەوام بووم لە گەڕان لە ئینتەرنێت بۆ زانیاری زیاتر،

I began to connect the dots.

دەستم کرد بە گرێدانی زانیاریەکان.

From what I could see,

هەرچیەک کە بینیبووم،

there was a severe lack of climate resources

رێژەیەکی زۆر کەمی سەرچاوەی کەش و هەوا

available in Farsi, Iran's native language.

بەردەستبوو بە فارسی، زمانی رەسەنی ئێران.

Now, I was still determined to educate my relatives,

ئێستا، هەر خەریکم بە روونکردنەوە بۆ خزمەکانم،

so I decided to work with my mom to translate climate resources into Farsi

بڕیارمدا کە لەگەڵ دایکم کار بکەم بۆ وەرگێڕانی گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا بۆ فارسی

so I could teach my aunts and uncles

و توانیم خاڵەکان و پورەکانم فێربکەم

about how climate-change-induced disasters were impacting millions of Iranians.

سەبارەت بە کاریگەری کوشندەی گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا بەجۆرێک کار لە ملیۆنان ئێرانی دەکات.

As I watched my relatives read my translations,

سەیری خزمەکانم کرد کە وەرگێڕانەکەی من دەخوێنەوە،

I had never been happier to see fear plastered all over their faces --

هەرگیز ئاوا پێنەکەنم کە ئەو هەموو ترسەم بەسەر دەم و چاویانەوە بینی —

because reading my translations had succeeded in convincing them

چونکە وەرگێڕانەکەی من سەرکەوتووبوو لە قایل کردنیان

that climate change was a real and pressing threat.

کە گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا راستەقینەیە و مایەی ترسە.

Now, my story is anecdotal.

ئێستا، چیڕۆکی من سەرگوزەشتەیە.

But the fact that the vast majority of scientific research

بەڵام راستیەکە ئەوەیە کە زۆربەی توێژینەوە زانستییەکان

is only available in English

تەنها بە ئینگلیزی بەردەستە

is a big problem when it comes to climate change ...

کێشەیەکی گەورەیە کاتێک گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا دێتە بەرباس …

because most people in the world don't speak English.

لەبەرئەوەی زۆربەی خەڵکی جیهان بە ئینگلیزی قسەناکەن.

In fact, 75 percent of them do not speak English at all.

لە راستیدا، سەتا ٧٥ی هەر ئینگلیزی نازانن.

Yet, according to a 2012 study on Scopus,

بەگوێرەی توێژینەوەیەکی “سکۆپەس”ی ساڵی ٢٠١٢،

the world's largest database for peer-reviewed journals,

گەورەترین بنکەی زانیاری جیهان بۆ پێداچوونەوە کردن بە گۆڤارەکان بە دووکەس،

80 percent of articles are written entirely in English.

سەتا هەشتای توێژینەوەکان بەتەواوەتی بە ئینگلیزی دەنوسرێت.

Even the United Nations' IPCC report,

تەنانەت راپۆرتی نەتەوە یەکگرتووەکانیش (ئای پی سی سی)

widely regarded as one of the most renowned pieces of climate literature

بە گشتی وەک یەکێک لە بەناوبانگترین جۆرەکانی کەش و هەوا

in the world,

لە جیهاندا،

is only officially available in the six UN languages:

کە تەنها بە ٦ زمانی فەرمی بەردەستە:

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

عەرەبی، چینی، ئینگلیزی، فەڕونسی، روسی و ئیسپانی.

But these are languages that account for less than half

of the world's speaking population.

Meaning, the majority of people on our planet

are unable to understand the documents and agreements

being issued by the world's highest international political body.

This lack of easily accessible documents and resources

کەمی لە سەرچاوە و دۆکیومێنتەکان

leads to misinformation and low public interest

دەبێتە هۆی هەڵەتێگەشتن و کەمبوونەوەی بەرژەوەندی گشتی

around tackling issues such as climate change.

لە کێشە نەزانراوەکان وەکو گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا.

In fact, just six years ago,

لە راستیدا، ٦ساڵ لەمەوبەر،

40 percent of adults in the world had never heard of climate change.

سەتا ٤٠ی پێگەیشتووەکانی جیهان هەرگیز گوێبیستی گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا نەبووبوون.

Let me repeat that.

لێگەڕێ دووبارەی بکەمەوە.

Two out of five adults had never heard of climate change.

دوو لەسەر پێنجی گەنجەکان هەرگیز گوێ بیستی گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا نەبووبوون.

When looking at specific regions where this problem lies,

کاتێک سەیری هەرێمێکی دیاریکراو دەکەیت کوا ئەو کێشەیە،

we can see that multiple studies have found, in Africa,

دەتوانین ئەوە ببینین کە چەندین توێژینەوە ئەوەیان دەرخست لە ئەفەریقا،

there was a severe lack of climate education and curriculum

کەمتەرخەمییەکی زۆر لە پەروەردەی کەش و هەوا و پڕۆگرامی خوێندن

available in Africa’s Indigenous and local languages.

هەبوو بۆ دانیشتوانی ئەفەریقا و زمانە ناوخۆییەکان.

This lack of information only hurts those who need access to it the most.

ئەو کەمی رێژەی زانیارییە زیان بەوانە دەگەیەنێت کە زۆر کاریان پێیەتی.

In countries such as Japan and the Philippines,

لە وڵاتانی وەک یابان و فلیپین،

climate change has worsened typhoons and disrupted agricultural industries.

گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا خراپتر بووە و پشەسازی کشتوکاڵی تێکدایە.

In these and the other 10 countries worst impacted by climate change,

لە دە وڵاتەکەی تر کەش و هەوا خراپتر کاریگەر بووە،

only one, Canada, is a majority English-speaking.

تاکە وڵات، کەنەدا، کە زۆربەی بە ئینگلیزی قسە دەکەن.

Languages remain a significant barrier

زمانەکەیان وەک بەربەستێکی گەورە ماوەتەوە

to the global transfer of scientific knowledge --

be it through the press, through schools

جا لە ڕێگەی چاپەمەنییەوە بێت یان قوتابخانە

or through political processes.

In an effort to close the climate translation gap,

لە هەوڵێکدا بۆ نەهێشتنی بۆشای وەرگێڕانی کەش و هەوا،

I decided to start Climate Cardinals,

بڕیارم دا دەست بکەم بە کەش و هەوا سەرەکیەکان،

and international youth-led nonprofit

بەبێ قازەنج با رابەرایەتی کردنی گەنجانی جیهان

working to make climate education more accessible

کارکردن بۆ ئەوەی پەروەردەی کەش و هەوا زیاتر بەردەست بێت

to those who don't speak English.

بۆ ئەوانەک کە بە ئینگلیزی قسە ناکەن.

We work with over 8,000 bilingual student volunteers

ئێمە لەگەڵ زیاتر لە ٨٠٠٠ خوێندکاری خۆبەخشی زمانزان کار دەکەین

who translate climate information in exchange for community service hours.

کە زانیاری کەش و هەوا وەردەگێڕن و دەگۆڕن بۆ سوودی کۆمەڵگاکەیان.

In just over a year,

لە ماوەی زیاتر لە ساڵێک،

we've translated hundreds of thousands of words of climate information

ئێمە سەدان و هەزاران وشەمان لەسەر زانیاری کەش و هەوا وەرگێڕاوە

into over 100 languages,

بۆ زیاتر لە ١٠٠ زمان،

including Yoruba, Somali, Swahili and Gujarati.

وەکو یۆروبا، سۆماڵی، سواهیلی و گوجەراتی.

If a ragtag group of teenagers that congregate through social media

ئەگەر گروپی (راگتاک)ی هەرزەکارەکان کە لە رێگەی تۆڕە کۆمەڵایەتییەکانەوە کۆدەبنەوە

can do this work,

دەتوانن ئەو کارە ئەنجام بدەن،

imagine the impact that a concentrated effort

وێنای کاریگەرییەکەی بکە کە هاوڵدانێکی چڕ

by governments, scientists and policymakers would have.

لەلایەن حکومەتەکان، زاناکان و سیاسەتمەداران دراوە.

Groups of people

گروپەکانی خەڵک

that are being disproportionately affected by climate change

کە گۆڕانی کەش و هەوا بە ناڕاستەوخۆیی کارگەریان لێ دەکات

deserve to have access to the resources they need

شایەنی گەیشتنن بەو سەرچاوانەی کە پێویستیانە

to make sense of these disasters that are destroying their communities.

بۆ ئەوەی وریای ئەو مەترسیە کوشندانە بن کە کۆمەڵگەکەیان لەناودەبات.

The more people are informed about the climate crisis,

تا زیاتر خەڵک لەسەر قەیرانەکانی کەش و هەوا فێربێت،

the greater chance we have to coordinate

هەلی زیاترمان دەبێت بۆ رێکخستنەوە

collective efforts in protection of the future of our planet.

و کاری هەرەوەزی بۆ پاراستنی داهاتووی وڵاتەکەمان

Because every single person in the world,

لەبەر ئەوەی هەر تاکە کەسێک لە جیهان،

every single person in this room,

هەر کەسێک لەم ژوورە،

has the power to further climate action.

هێزی کرداری کەش و هەوای هەیە.

So we must engage people from every country,

کەواتە پێویستە هانی خەڵک بدەین لە هەر وڵاتێک،

young and old,

بچوک و گەورە،

to join the fight for climate justice.

بۆ چوونە ناو جەنگەکە بۆ دادپەروەری کەش و هەوا.

English cannot be the barrier to entry.

ئینگلیزی نابێتە بەربەستێک بۆ چوونە ناو.
