So the first robot to talk about is called STriDER.

It stands for Self-excited Tripedal Dynamic Experimental Robot.

It's a robot that has three legs, which is inspired by nature.

But have you seen anything in nature, an animal that has three legs?

Probably not. So why do I call this a biologically inspired robot?

على الارجح لا .. فكيف أقول أنه ...

How would it work?

But before that, let's look at pop culture.

So, you know H.G. Wells's "War of the Worlds," novel and movie.

And what you see over here is a very popular video game,

and in this fiction, they describe these alien creatures and robots

This is an actual dynamic simulation animation.

I'm going to show you how the robot works.

It flips its body 180 degrees

and it swings its leg between the two legs

You're using your built-in dynamics, the physics of your body,

just like a pendulum.

We call that the concept of passive dynamic locomotion.

ونحن نسمي هذا المفهوم "ديناميكية التحرك سلبي"

What you're doing is, when you stand up,

potential energy to kinetic energy,

We want to fold up the legs and shoot it up for long-range motion.

And it deploys legs -- it looks almost like "Star Wars" --

so when it lands, it absorbs the shock and starts walking.

that if you have cameras or different types of sensors,

So we have two prototypes.

The first version, in the back, that's STriDER I.

The one in front, the smaller, is STriDER II.

The problem we had with STriDER I is, it was just too heavy in the body.

We had so many motors aligning the joints

so we could get rid of all the motors, and with a single motor,

It's a mechanical solution to a problem, instead of using mechatronics.

So with this, now the top body is lighted up; it's walking in our lab.

This was the very first successful step.

It's still not perfected, its coffee falls down,

The second robot I want to talk about is called IMPASS.

It stands for Intelligent Mobility Platform with Actuated Spoke System.

It's a wheel-leg hybrid robot.

So think of a rimless wheel or a spoke wheel,

but the spokes individually move in and out of the hub;

so, it's a wheel-leg hybrid.

We're literally reinventing the wheel here.

Let me demonstrate how it works.

So in this video we're using an approach called the reactive approach.

Just simply using the tactile sensors on the feet,

This is a very high-mobility robot that we developed called IMPASS.

Ah, isn't that cool?

When you drive your car,

when you steer your car, you use a method called Ackermann steering.

The front wheels rotate like this.

These are just some examples of the neat things we can do with IMPASS.

Cable-suspended Limbed Intelligent Matching Behavior Robot.

I've been talking to a lot of NASA JPL scientists --

ولقد تحدثت لعلماء مختبر الدفع النفاث في ناسا

at JPL, they are famous for the Mars rovers --

and the scientists, geologists always tell me

that the real interesting science, the science-rich sites,

But the current rovers cannot get there.

So, inspired by that, we wanted to build a robot

that can climb a structured cliff environment.

It has three legs.

It's probably difficult to see, but it has a winch and a cable at the top.

It tries to figure out the best place to put its foot.

Five years ago, I actually worked at NASA JPL

This robot is a very recent project.

There are a lot of really neat, very good robotic hands

The problem is, they're just too expensive --

tens of thousands of dollars.

As you know, we're very interested in human walking,

Based on that success, the following year we did the proper mechanical design,

Dennis Hong: There is actually a competition called RoboCup.

في الحقيقة يوجد مسابقة تدعى " روبوكوب "

I don't know how many of you have heard about RoboCup.

لا أعلم كم منكم سمع بمسابقة " ربوكوب "

إنها مسابقة كرة قدم للرجال الآلية ذاتية التحكم

It's an international autonomous robot soccer competition.

And the actual goal of RoboCup is,

وهدف مسابقة " روبوكب" .. هدفها الحقيقي

by the year 2050,

أنه في عام 2050

we want to have full-size, autonomous humanoid robots

سوف نملك رجال آلية بحجم إنسان حقيقي مستقلة التحكم

وسوف تلعب مبارة كرة قدم ضد أبطال كأس العالم - البشر -

play soccer against the human World Cup champions

and win.

وسوف نربح عليهم

It's a true, actual goal.

It's a very ambitious goal, but we truly believe we can do it.

We were the very first team in the United States that qualified

The robots track and they team-play amongst themselves.

It's very impressive.

It's really a research event,

packaged in a more exciting competition event.

ولكن ضمن نطاق مسابقة ممتعة

والذي ترونه هنا .. هذا الشيء الجميل

What you see here is the beautiful Louis Vuitton Cup trophy.

This is for the best humanoid.

This is the next generation robot, DARwIn IV,

much smarter, faster, stronger.

And it's trying to show off its ability:

All right. So I showed you some of our exciting robots at work.

So, what is the secret of our success?

Where do we come up with these ideas?

ومن أين نأتي بهذه الأفكار ؟

How do we develop these kinds of ideas?

وكيف نطور تلك الأفكار ؟

We have a fully autonomous vehicle

بالمناسبة .. نحن نملك سيارة ذاتية التحكم تماما

that can drive into urban environments.

والتي يمكنا السير في الأحياء المدنية .. وقد ربحنا نصف مليون دولار

We won a half a million dollars in the DARPA Urban Challenge.

في تحدي " داربا " المدني

كما أننا نملك أول سيارة في العالم

We also have the world's very first vehicle that can be driven by the blind.

يمكن للمصابين بالعمى أن يقودوها

We call it the Blind Driver Challenge, very exciting.

ونسمي ذلك " تحدي قيادة فاقدي البصر " وهذا شيء مثيرٌ جداً

وهنالك الكثير والكثير من الرجال الآلية والتي أرغب بالتحدث عنها

And many, many other robotics projects I want to talk about.

These are just the awards that we won in 2007 fall

هذه هي الجوائز التي ربحناها في خريف 2007

من مسابقة الرجال الآلية التي تشابه التي عرضتها عليكم

from robotics competitions and those kinds of things.

So really, we have five secrets.

وفي الحقيقة لدينا 5 أسرار

First is: Where do we get inspiration?

أولاً .. من أين نأتي بالإلهام

من أين نأتي بوميض الأفكار الخيالية ؟

Where do we get this spark of imagination?

سأقول لكم قصة حقيقية .. هذه قصتي الشخصية ..

This is a true story, my personal story.

At night, when I go to bed, at three, four in the morning,

في الليل عندما أذهب للفراش في 3 أو 4 صباحاً وأستلقي

وأغلق عيني .. وأرى كل هذه الخطوط والدوائر

I lie down, close my eyes, and I see these lines and circles

and different shapes floating around.

وتلك الأشكال الغريبة تحوم حولي

And they assemble, and they form these kinds of mechanisms.

وتشكل .. بعضاً من النماذج الميكانيكية

And I think, "Ah, this is cool."

أقول في نفسي " هذا رائع "

So right next to my bed I keep a notebook, a journal,

لذا ولكي لا أضيع هذا , أضع بالقرب مني دفتر ملاحظات

مع قلم خاص مزود بضوء صغير " ضوء مركز "

with a special pen that has an LED light on it,

because I don't want to turn on the light and wake up my wife.

لانني لا أريد أن أُوقظ زوجتي بإنارة الغرفة

وكما أسلفت .. أرسم وأبعثر الأفكار على تلك الورقة

So I see this, scribble everything down, draw things, and go to bed.

ومن ثم أنام

Every day in the morning, the first thing I do,

وكل يوم في الصباح

أول شيء أقوم به قبل قهوتي الصباحية

before my first cup of coffee, before I brush my teeth,

وقبل تنظيف اسناني .. هو أني أفتح دفتر الملاحظات ذاك

I open my notebook.

وأجده أحيانا فارغٌ

Many times it's empty; sometimes I have something there.

واحيانا أجدُ شيئاً مثير للإهتمام .. وأحيانا مجرد طلاسم

If something's there, sometimes it's junk.

وغالباً لا استطيع قراءة الكلمات التي كتبت بخطي الليلي

But most of the time, I can't read my handwriting.

وهكذا .. تعلمون في الرابعة صباحاً .. مالذي يمكن توقعه .. أليس كذلك ؟

Four in the morning -- what do you expect, right?

So I need to decipher what I wrote.

لذا أحتاج لفك تشفير ما كتبته سابقاً

But sometimes I see this ingenious idea in there,

ولكن أحيانا أجد أفكار عبقرية

and I have this eureka moment.

تقودني للفكرة ملهمة

I directly run to my home office, sit at my computer,

فأقود مباشرة إلى مكتبي وأجلس على الكمبيوتر

I type in the ideas, I sketch things out

وأكتب تلك الأفكار وأرسم المخطوطات الأولية

and I keep a database of ideas.

ولدي ملف خاص للأفكار - أرشيف لها -

So when we have these calls for proposals,

وعندا يتطلب الأمر تلك الأفكار

I try to find a match between my potential ideas

أحاول أن أُقارب بين

أفكار الممكنة

and the problem.

وبين المشكلة التي تواجهني .. وإذا كان هنالك تشابه أو تقارب أقوم بكتابة بحث عن الحل المقترح

If there's a match, we write a research proposal,

لكي نحصل على التمويل .. ومن ثم نبدأ بتنفيذ البحث والحل

get the research funding in,

and that's how we start our research programs.

ولكن لمحة من الخيال ليست كافية ..

But just a spark of imagination is not good enough.

How do we develop these kinds of ideas?

فكيف نطور تلك الأفكار

At our lab RoMeLa, the Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory,

في مختبرنا في " روميلا " مختبر الميكانيك الآلي

we have these fantastic brainstorming sessions.

لدينا عدة لقاءات فكرية رائعة

So we gather around, we discuss problems and solutions and talk about it.

حيث نجتمع معاً ونناقش تلك المشاكل

ونطرح المشاكل معاً ونتحدث عنها

But before we start, we set this golden rule.

ولكن قبل أن نبدأ نذكر بقاعدتنا الذهبية

The rule is:

وهذه القاعدة هي

nobody criticizes anybody's ideas.

" لا أحد ينتقد فكرة أحد آخر "

Nobody criticizes any opinion.

لا أحد ينتقد أي رأي

This is important, because many times, students fear or feel uncomfortable

وهذا مهم جداً لان العديد من الطلاب الجدد يهابون طرح الأفكار

ويشعرون أحيانا بعدم الإرتياح بسبب ما قد يعتقده الآخرون عن أفكارهم

about how others might think about their opinions and thoughts.

أو أرائهم أو ما يجول في خاطرهم

So once you do this, it is amazing how the students open up.

وعندما نطبق هذه القاعدة .. يصبح الأمر رائع

فيقوم الطلاب

They have these wacky, cool, crazy, brilliant ideas,

ونحصل على تلك الأفكار الجنونية المبدعة

and the whole room is just electrified with creative energy.

وتصبح الغرفة مليئة بشحنة إبداعية

وهذه هي طريقة تطوير أفكارنا

And this is how we develop our ideas.

Well, we're running out of time.

لقد بدأ وقتي بالإنتهاء .. هنالك شيء آخر أريد التحدث عنه

One more thing I want to talk about is,

كما تعلمون .. الفكرة الرائعة وتطويرها ليسا كافين فقط

you know, just a spark of idea and development is not good enough.

There was a great TED moment -- I think it was Sir Ken Robinson, was it?

هنالك موقف رائع حدث في " تيد "

وأعتقد أن المتحدث كان " السير كين روبنسون " أو هكذا أظن ..

He gave a talk about how education and school kill creativity.

وقد تحدث عن كيف أن التعليم

والمدرسة تقتل الإبداع لدى أطفالنا

Well, actually, there's two sides to the story.

ولكن في الواقع يوجد جانبان للقصة

So there is only so much one can do with just ingenious ideas

إذاً .. لنقل أن هنالك الكثير الذي يمكن لشخص واحد القيام به

بفكرة ذكية ولامعة

and creativity and good engineering intuition.

ومبدعة وبحدس هندسي جيد

If you want to go beyond a tinkering,

وإن أردنا أن نتجاوز هذا النموذج من التفكير اللامع

if you want to go beyond a hobby of robotics

وأردنا أن نتجاوز وجود من يملكون هوس بالرجال الآلين

and really tackle the grand challenges of robotics

وأردنا بالفعل حل تحديات الرجال الآلية من جذورها

عبر البحث المعمق

through rigorous research,

we need more than that.

فنحن نحتاج الكثير الكثير أكثر من فكر لامع ومهوسون - وهنا يأتي دور المدرسة

This is where school comes in.

Batman, fighting against the bad guys,

تذكروا كيف " بات مان " يحارب الأشرار

he has his utility belt, he has his grappling hook,

أليس يملك حزام الأدوات و الكلاب الساحب

he has all different kinds of gadgets.

وكل تلك الإضافات التي تساعده

For us roboticists, engineers and scientists,

فبالنسبة للرجال الآلية .. إن المهندسين والعلماء

هي تلك الأدوات .. والمناهج والصفوف التي تعطى للطلاب ..

these tools are the courses and classes you take in class.

Math, differential equations.

الرياضيات .. والمعادلات التفاضلية

I have linear algebra, science, physics --

والجبر الخطي والعلوم والفيزياء

وحتى الكيمياء والأحياء .. كما ترون

even, nowadays, chemistry and biology, as you've seen.

كل هذه هي الأدوات التي نحتاجها اليوم - للرجال الآلية -

These are all the tools we need.

So the more tools you have, for Batman,

وكما أنه كلما زادت الأدوات التي يملكها " بات مان "

more effective at fighting the bad guys,

فكلما زادت قوته ضد الأشرار

for us, more tools to attack these kinds of big problems.

فالأمر مشابه بالنسبة لنا .. كلما زدات أدواتنا كلما تغلبنا على العوائق الكبيرة التي تصادفنا

So education is very important.

لذا .. التعليم مهمٌ جداً

Also -- it's not only about that.

وليس هذا فقط ,,

ليس هذا فقط .. إنما يتوجب العمل بكل إصرار بكل ما تحمل الكلمة من معنى

You also have to work really, really hard.

وأنا أقول لطلابي دوماً

So I always tell my students,

إعمل بذكاء ثم إبذل الجهد في عملك

"Work smart, then work hard."

وهذه الصورة أُلتقطت في الثالثة صباحاً

This picture in the back -- this is three in the morning.

I guarantee if you come to our lab at 3, 4am,

وأنا أضمن لك أنه إن مررتم بمختبرنا في 3 أو 4 صباحاً

سوف تجد الطلاب يعملون هنالك

we have students working there,

not because I tell them to, but because we are having too much fun.

ليس لاننا نجبرهم على ذلك إنما لانهم يستمتعون فعلاً بالعمل هناك

مما يقودنا للفكرة النهائية التي أريد أن أقول

Which leads to the last topic:

do not forget to have fun.

وهي " لا تنسى أن تستمتع بعملك "

That's really the secret of our success, we're having too much fun.

فهذا هو سر نجاحنا .. فنحن نستمتع كثيراً

I truly believe that highest productivity comes when you're having fun,

وأنا أؤمن حقاً .. أن الإنتاجية القصوى لا تأتي إلا عندما تستمتع بما تقوم به

وهذا ما نقوم به

and that's what we're doing.
