What Kepler does

are the people like me who study those planets

We don't want to go blind because there's too many possibilities,

From the right bank of the river

are the experiments in the lab that I just showed you,

Now it's about something else,

sense of insignificance

the bigger that universe becomes.

And look at this image of the tiny, blue dot.

This pixel is the Earth.

It is the Earth as we know it.

It is seen from, in this case,

But it's really tiny.

We know that.

Let's think of life as that entire planet

Would that make us more responsible

Let's actually try that.

So in space, the Earth is very small.

Can you imagine how small it is?

We can't imagine it.

I mean look, you can see the necktie,

but you can't even imagine seeing

the size of a little, small atom.

But that's not the whole story, you see.

The universe and life

الكون والحياه

are both in space and time.

هما الإثنين فى الفضاء والوقت .

If that was

إذا كان ذلك

the age of the universe,

هو عمر الكون ،

then this is the age of life on Earth.

إذا هذا هو عمر الحياه على الأرض .

Think about those oldest living things on Earth,

فكروا بأقدم كائنات حية على الأرض ،

but in a cosmic proportion.

لكن فى تناسب الأبعاد الكونية .

This is not insignificant.

إنه ليس شيئ عديم القيمة .

This is very significant.

إنه شيئ ذو تأثير كبير .

So life might be insignificant in size,

فالحياه يمكن أن تكون تافهه فى حجمها ،

but it is not insignificant in time.

لكنها ليست تافهه فى الوقت .

Life and the universe

الحياه والكون

compare to each other like a child and a parent,

بالمقارنة لكل منهما مثل الطفل والأب ،

parent and offspring.

الوالدين والذرية .

So what does this tell us?

لذلك ماذا يخبرنا هذا ؟

This tells us that

هذا يخبرنا أن

that insignificance paradigm

ذلك النموذج العديم الأهمية

that we somehow got to learn

الذى إلى حد ما تعلمناه

from the Copernican principle,

من نظرية كوبرنيكان ،

it's all wrong.

كلها خاطئة .

There is immense, powerful potential

هناك قدرة ، محتملة ، هائلة

in life in this universe --

فى الحياه على هذا الكون --

especially now that we know

that places like the Earth are common.

And that potential, that powerful potential,

is also our potential,

And if we are to be stewards

of our planet Earth

لكوكبنا الأرض

and its biosphere,

we'd better understand

سنفهم أفضل

the cosmic significance

ما هى غاية الحياه وأهميتها

and do something about it.

ونفعل شيئاً تجاهها .

And the good news is we can

والأخبار الجيدة هى أننا نستطيع

actually, indeed do it.

بالحقيقة المؤكدة أننا نفعل .

And let's do it.

ودعونا نفعل .

Let's start this new revolution

دعونا نبدأ هذه الثورة الجديدة

at the tail end of the old one,

with synthetic biology being

the way to transform
