All the world’s a stage,

ทั้งโลกเปรียบเหมือนโรงละครใหญ่

And all the men and women merely players;

ชายหญิงไซร้เปรียบตัวลครนั่น

They have their exits and their entrances;

ต่างมียามเข้าออกอยู่เหมือนกัน

And one man in his time plays many parts,

คนหนึ่งนั้นย่อมเล่นตัวนานา

His acts being seven ages.

คือแบ่งเป็นเจ็ดปางอย่างนี้ไซร้

At first the infant,

หนึ่งลูกอ่อนนอนไห้อยู่จ้า ๆ

Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms;

ในวงแขนพี่เลี้ยงกล่อมเกลี้ยงมา จนกว่าจะสามารถอาจเลี้ยงตน

And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel

สองคือเด็กนักเรียนแรกเขียนอ่าน ถือย่ามผ่านไปพลางทางพร่ำบ่น

And shining morning face, creeping like snail

Unwillingly to school.

ไปโรงเรียนชอบกลราวหอยคลาน

And then the lover,

สามคือหนุ่มรักสมรเฝ้าถอนใจ

Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad

ราวเตาไฟที่เพลิงเร้าเริงผลาญ

Made to his mistress’ eyebrow.

แต่งเพลงยาวชมขนงเจ้านงคราญ

Then a soldier,

สี่ทหาร เสียงดังตึงตึงไป

Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,

และหนวดเคราคล้ายเสือ เหลือจะรัก

Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,

เกียรติศักดิ์ มักวิวาทปราดเข้าใส่

Seeking the bubble reputation

ถลันหาเกียรติยศแม้ที่ใน

Even in the cannon’s mouth.

ปากปืนใหญ่ไม่พรั่นหวั่นวิญญา

And then the justice,

ห้าลูกขุนผู้ใหญ่ไก่เต็มพุง

In fair round belly with good capon lin’d,

จนท้องตุงตัวอ้วนท้วนหนักหนา

With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,

ตาขมึง หนวดเคราเข้าตำรา

Full of wise saws and modern instances;

ชำนาญในกติกาประเพณี

And so he plays his part.

The sixth age shifts

ตกลงมาถึงปางคำรบหก

Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,

เป็นตลกซูบแท้แก่เต็มที่

With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;

ใส่แว่นตาคาดกระเป๋าเทราฤดี

His youthful hose, well sav’d, a world too wide

ถุงตีนที่เคยใช้แต่เยาว์วัย

For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,

ก็หย่อนย่นร่นหลวมสวมเขาเหี่ยว

เสียงเคยห้าวกลับเรียวลงไปได้

Turning again toward childish treble, pipes

ราวเสียงเด็ก ยามสนทนาไป

And whistles in his sound.

ปางสุดท้าย นี้หมายจบประวัติ

Last scene of all,

That ends this strange eventful history,

Is second childishness and mere oblivion;

อันเห็นชัดเป็นเด็กอีกแม่นมั่น

Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

มีแต่หลงลืมไป อีกไร้ฟัน
