I am going to start with a challenge.

စိန်ခေါ်မှုတစ်ခုနဲ့ စတင်ပါတော့မယ်။

I want you to imagine each of these two scenes

ဒီမြင်ကွင်းနှစ်ခုထဲက တစ်ခုစီကို တတ်နိုင်သမျှ အသေးစိတ်

in as much detail as you can.

Scene number one:

"They gave us a hearty welcome."

Well, who are the people who are giving a hearty welcome?

ကောင်းပြီ၊ လှိုက်လှိုက်လှဲလှဲ ကြိုဆိုနေကြတဲ့သူတွေက ဘယ်သူတွေလဲ။

What are they wearing?

သူတို့ ဘာဝတ်ထားလဲ။

What are they drinking?

ဘာတွေ သောက်နေကြတာလဲ။

အိုကေ၊ မြင်ကွင်း နှစ်။

OK, scene two:

"They gave us a cordial reception."

“They gave us a cordial reception.”

How are these people standing?

ဒီလူတွေ ဘယ်လို ရပ်နေလဲ။

What expressions are on their faces?

သူတို့မျက်နှာမှာ ဘယ်လို အမူအရာတွေရှိနေလဲ။

What are they wearing and drinking?

ဘာတွေဝတ်ပြီး သောက်နေကြတာလဲ။

Fix these pictures in your mind's eye

ဒီပုံတွေကို စိတ်မျက်စိထဲမှာ စွဲထားပါ။

and then jot down a sentence or two to describe them.

ဒီနောက် ဒါတွေကို သရုပ်ဖော်ဖို့ စာတစ်ကြောင်းနှစ်ကြောင်း ချရေးပါ။

We'll come back to them later.

Now on to our story.

In the year 400 C.E.

ခရစ်နှစ် ၄၀၀ မှာ

the Celts in Britain were ruled by Romans.

ဗြိတိန်ရှိ ကက်လ်စ် တွေကို ရောမတွေက အုပ်ချုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

This had one benefit for the Celts:

ဒါက ကက်လ်စ်တွေ အတွက် အကျိုးကျေးဇူးတစ်ခုရရှိခဲ့တယ်။

the Romans protected them from the barbarian Saxon tribes

of Northern Europe.

But then the Roman Empire began to crumble,

quickly sailed across the water,

and formed kingdoms in the British Isles.

For several centuries, these tribes lived in Britain,

and their Germanic language, Anglo Saxon,

became the common language, what we call Old English.

Although modern English speakers may think Old English sounds like a different language,

if you look and listen closely, you'll find many words that are recognizable.

အနီးကပ် ကြည့်ရှု၊ နားထောင်ရင် မှတ်မိနိုင် တဲ့ စကားလုံးများစွာကို တွေ့ရမှာပါ။

For example, here is what the Lord's Prayer looks like in Old English.

ဥပမာ၊ ဒါက ရှေးဟောင်း အင်္ဂလိပ်စာထဲက Lord’s Prayer နဲ့ ဆင်တူတယ်။

ရုတ်တရက် ကြည့်ရင် ဒါက ရင်းနှီးပုံမပေါက်ပေမဲ့

At first glance, it may look unfamiliar,

but update the spelling a bit,

စာလုံးပေါင်းကို အနည်းငယ်

and you'll see many common English words.

မွမ်းမံလိုက်ရင် အသုံးများတဲ့ အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားလုံးတွေကို တွေ့ရမှာပါ။

So the centuries passed with Britains happily speaking Old English,

ရာစုနှစ်တွေတိုင် ဗြိတိန်တွေဟာ ရှေးဟောင်း အင်္ဂလိပ်တွေကို ပျော်ရွှင်စွာ ပြောခဲ့ပေမဲ့

but in the 700's, a series of Viking invasions began,

which continued until a treaty split the island in half.

On one side were the Saxons.

who spoke a language called Old Norse.

As Saxons fell in love with their cute Danish neighbors

ဆက်ဆွန် တွေဟာ ဒိန်းမတ်အိမ်နီးချင်းတွေကို ချစ်ကြိုက်ပြိး

and marriages blurred the boundaries,

Old Norse mixed with Old English,

and many Old Norse words like

freckle,

leg,

root,

skin,

and want

are still a part of our language.

300 years later, in 1066,

နှစ် ၃၀၀ ကြာပြီးနောက်

the Norman conquest brought war again to the British Isles.

၁၀၆၆ ခုနှစ်မှာ Norman အောင်ပွဲက ဗြိတိသျှ ကျွန်းစုတွေမှာ တစ်ဖန် စစ်ဖြစ်စေခဲ့တယ်။

The Normans were Vikings who settled in France.

နော်မန်တွေက ပြင်သစ်မှာ အခြေချတဲ့ ဗိုက်ကင်းတွေပါ။

They had abandoned the Viking language and culture

in favor of a French lifestyle,

They placed a Norman king on the English throne

and for three centuries, French was the language of the British royalty.

Society in Britain came to have two levels:

French-speaking aristocracy

The French also brought many Roman Catholic clergymen with them

who added Latin words to the mix.

ဓမ္မဆရာ အများအပြားကိုပါ ခေါ်ဆောင်လာခဲ့တယ်။

Old English adapted and grew

ရှေးဟောင်း အင်္ဂလိပ်မှာ

as thousands of words flowed in,

စကားလုံးထောင်ပေါင်းများစွာ ဝင်လာတယ်။

many having to do with government, law, and aristocracy.

အများအပြားက အစိုးရ၊ဥပဒေနဲ့ မင်းမျိုးစိုးနွယ်တွေနဲ့ ပတ်သက်တာပါ။

Words like council,

council, marriage, sovereign,

marriage,

sovereign,

govern,

govern, damage, and parliament လို စကားလုံးတွေပါ။

damage,

and parliament.

As the language expanded,

ဘာသာစကားကျယ်ပြန့်လာာတာနဲ့

English speakers quickly realized what to do

အင်္ဂလိပ်စကားပြောသူတွေဟာ ဆန်းပြားတဲ့

if they wanted to sound sophisticated:

အသံပေါက်ချင်ရင် ဘာလုပ်ရမယ်ဆိုတာကို အမြန် သဘောပေါက်လာတယ်။

they would use words that had come from French or Latin.

ပြင်သစ် သို့မဟုတ် လက်တင်ကနေ လာတဲ့ စကားလုံးတွေကို သုံးမှာပါ။

Anglo Saxon words seemed so plain

အန်ဂလို ဆက်ဆွန် စကားလုံးတွေက ဒါတွေကို ပြောတဲ့

like the Anglo Saxon peasants who spoke them.

အန်ဂလို ဆက်ဆွန် တောင်သူ လယ်သမားတွေလို ရိုးရှင်းပုံရတယ်။

Let's go back to the two sentences you thought about earlier.

စောစောက စဥ်းစားခဲ့တဲ့ စာကြောင်း နှစ်ကြောင်းကို ပြန်ကြည့်ရအောင်။

When you pictured the hearty welcome,

လှိုက်လှဲတဲ့ ကြိုဆိုခြင်းကို ပုံဖော်တဲ့အခါ

did you see an earthy scene with relatives hugging and talking loudly?

ဆွေမျိုးတွေ ပွေ့ဖက်ကာ ကျယ်လောင်စွာ ပြောဆို နေတဲ့ လှိုက်လှဲတဲ့မြင်ကွင်းကို မြင်လား။

Were they drinking beer?

သူတို့ ဘီယာ သောက်နေကြသလား။

Were they wearing lumberjack shirts and jeans?

သစ်ခုတ်သမား အင်္ကျီနဲ့ ဂျင်းဘောင်းဘီတွေ ဝတ်ထားလား။

And what about the cordial reception?

ပျူငှာတဲ့ ဧည့်ခံခြင်းနဲ့ ပတ်သက်တာကရော။

I bet you pictured a far more classy and refined crowd.

ပိုအထက်တန်းဆန်ပြီး ရည်မွန်တဲ့ လူစုကို ပုံဖော်ထားတယ်လို့ ထင်တယ်။

Blazers and skirts,

ဘလေဇာတွေ၊ စကတ်တွေ၊

wine and caviar.

ဝိုင်နဲ့ ငါးဥဆားနယ်ပေါ့။

Why is this?

ဒါက ဘာကြောင့်လဲ။

How is it that phrases that are considered just about synonymous by the dictionary

အဘိဓာန်က အဓိပ္ပါယ်တူတယ်လို့ ယူဆထားတဲ့ စကားစုတွေက ဒီလို မတူညီတဲ့ ပုံရိပ်တွေနဲ့

can evoke such different pictures and feelings?

ခံစားချက်တွေကို ဘယ်လို သတိရစေနိုင်သလဲ။

"Hearty" and "welcome" are both Saxon words.

“hearty” နဲ “welcome” က ဆက်ဆွန် စကားလုံးတွေပါ။

"Cordial" and "reception" come from French.

“cordial” နဲ့ “reception” က ပြင်သစ်ဘာသာကနေ ဆင်းသက်လာတာပါ။

The connotation of nobility and authority has persisted

မြင့်မြတ်မှုနှင့် အခွင့်အာဏာရဲ့ ဂယက်အနက်က ပြင်သစ်ဘာသာ အရင်းခံတဲ့

around words of French origin.

စကားလုံးတွေပေါ်မှာ ဆက်တည်ရှိနေတယ်။

And the connotation of peasantry,

ပြီးတော့ peasantry ရဲ့ ဂယက်အနက်

real people,

သဘာဝကျတဲ့ လူတွေ၊

salt of the Earth,

လူရိုးလူကောင်း ဆိုတာက

has persisted around Saxon words.

ဆက်ဆွန် စကားလုံးတွေ ဝန်းကျင်မှာ ဆက်တည်ရှိနေတယ်။

Even if you never heard this history before,

ဒီသမိုင်းကို အရင်က တစ်ခါမှ မကြားဖူးခဲ့ရင်တောင်

the memory of it persists in the feelings evoked

သင် ပြောတဲ့ စကားတွေကြောင့် ဖြစ်ပေါ်လာတဲ့ ခံစားချက်တွေထဲမှာ

by the words you speak.

ဒီအမှတ်ရမှုက ဆက်ရှိနေမှာပါ။

On some level, it's a story you already knew

တစ်စုံတစ်ခုသော ရှုထောင့်မှာတော့ ဒါကို အသိစိတ် သို့မဟုတ် မသိစိတ်ကနေ

because whether we realize it consciously

ကျွန်မတို့ သိတာဖြစ်ဖြစ် ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့သမိုင်းဟာ

or only subconsciously,

ကျွန်မတို့ ပြောနေ၊ ကြားနေရတဲ့

our history lives in the words we speak and hear.

စကားလုံးတွေမှာ ရှင်သန်နေတာကြောင့် ဒါက သင် သိပြီးသား ဇာတ်လမ်းတစ်ပုဒ်ပါ။
