Albert Camus grew up surrounded by violence.

ئەلبێرت کامو) دناڤ زورداریێ دا مەزنبوو)

His homeland of Algeria was mired in conflict between native Algerians

وەلاتێ وی جەزائیر د شەروپێکدادانا بوو دناڤبەرا خەلکێ جەزائیر

and colonizing French Europeans.

و ب سەرداگرتیێن فرەنسی یێت ئەوڕوپی

He lost his father in the First World War,

ئەوی بابێ خۆ ژدەست دا ل شەرێ جیهانی یێ ئێکێ

and was deemed unfit to fight in the second.

و ئەو نەیێ گونجای بوو بۆ شەرێ جیهانی یێ دووێ

Battling tuberculosis in France and confronting the war's devastation

ئەوی شەر دژی نەخوشییا "سلێ' کر ل فرەنسا و ڕویبروی تێکدانێت شەری بوو

as a resistance journalist, Camus grew despondent.

وەك روژنامەڤانەکێ بەرگریکەر، کامو ب بێ هیڤی مەزن بوو

He couldn’t fathom any meaning behind all this endless bloodshed and suffering.

ئەو نە شییا چ ڕامانا ببینیت

ل پشت ئەوان هەمی خوین ڕێشتن و دەردەسەریێت بێ دوماهیك

He asked: if the world was meaningless,

ئەوی پرسیارکر: ئەگەر جیهان یا بێ رامان بیت

could our individual lives still hold value?

ئەرێ دێ ژیانا مە یا تاکەکەسی هێشتا بهایێ خۆ هەبیت؟

Many of Camus’ contemporaries were exploring similar questions

گەلەك ژ کەسێن هەڤدەم دگەل کاموی ل هەمان پرسیار دگەریان

under the banner of a new philosophy called existentialism.

ل ژێر ئالایێ فەلسەفەکا نوی دا دگوتنێ هەبوونخوازی

Existentialists believed people were born as blank slates,

فەلسەفا هەبوونخوازیێ باوەری هەبوو کو مروڤ وەکو لاپەرێن ڤالا یێن ژ دایکبووین

each responsible for creating their life’s meaning amidst a chaotic world.

هەر ئێك یێ بەرپرسە ژ دروستکرنا ژیانا خۆ د ئەڤێ جیهانا بێسەروبەر دا

But Camus rejected their school of thought.

بەلێ پا کاموی هزرا قوتابخانا وان ڕەتکر

He argued all people were born with a shared human nature

ئەوی دگوت کو مروڤ هەمی یێت ژدایکبووین ب ساخلەتەکا مروڤی یا پارڤەکری

that bonded them toward common goals.

کو ئەوان پێکڤە گرێددەت بەرەڤ هەمان ئارمانج

One such goal was to seek out meaning despite the world’s arbitrary cruelty.

ئێك ژ وان ئارمانجا ئەوە ل دویڤ ڕامانا ژیانێ بگەرین

سەرەرای سەختییا هەمەرەکی یا جیهانێ

Camus viewed humanity’s desire for meaning and the universe’s silent indifference

کاموی ددیت کو ڕامان د حەزێن مروڤایەتییێ دا و جوداهی د بێدەنگیا گەردونی دا

as two incompatible puzzle pieces,

وەکی دوو پارچێت مەتەڵێت نە گونجای دگەل ئێك

and considered trying to fit them together to be fundamentally absurd.

و هوسا دانا کو پێکول ژ بۆ گونجاندنا وان دگەل ئێك، کارەکێ بێ ڕامانە

This tension became the heart of Camus’ Philosophy of the Absurd,

ئەڤ گڕژیە بوونە دلێ فەلسەفا کاموی یا بێ ڕامانیێ

which argued that life is inherently futile.

كو دگوت ژیان ب سروشتێ خۆ یا بێ مفا یە

Exploring how to live without meaning

لێگەریان ل کا دێ چەوا ژین بێ هیچ مەبەستەك

became the guiding question behind Camus’ early work,

بوو ئەو پرسیارا ڕێبەر د پشت کارێ کاموی یێ دەستپێکێ

which he called his “cycle of the absurd.”

کو بناڤکر ب “زڤروکا بێ ڕامانیێ”

The star of this cycle, and Camus’ first published novel,

دەستپێکا ڤێ زڤروکێ و ئێکەمین ڕومانا کاموی بەلاڤکری

offers a rather bleak response.

بەرسڤەکا تاڕیتر پێشکێش کر

"The Stranger" follows Meursault, an emotionally detached young man

کەسێ بیانی” بەحسێ مورسوی دکەت” زەلامەکێ گەنجێ هەست ڤەکری

who doesn’t attribute much meaning to anything.

یێ کو گەلەك ڕامانا نا دەتە چ تشتا

He doesn’t cry at his mother’s funeral,

ئەوی نەکرە گری ل تازیا دەیکا خۆ

he supports his neighbor’s scheme to humiliate a woman,

ئەوی پلان دگەل جیرانێ خو دانا دا شەرما ئافرەتەکێ ببەن

he even commits a violent crime — but Meaursault feels no remorse.

هەتاکو ئەوی تاوانەکا مەزن ئەنجامدا بەلێ پا مورسو هەست ب پەشێمانیێ ناکەت

For him the world is pointless and moral judgment has no place in it.

ل دەڤ وی ژیان یا بێ مفایە و بریارێت رەوشتی چ جهێ خو تێدا نینە

This attitude creates hostility between Meursault

ئەڤی هەلویستی دوژمناهی دناڤبەرا مورسوی و کومەلگەها وی یا ڕێکوپێك دا پەیداکر

and the orderly society he inhabits,

slowly increasing his alienation until the novel’s explosive climax.

جوداهیا وی هێدی هێدی مەزندبیت هەتا ل دوماهیا ڕومانێ د پەقیت

Unlike his spurned protagonist, Camus was celebrated for his honest philosophy.

بەروڤاژی قارەمانێ چیروکێ يێ بێ ڕێز

کامو هاتە پیروزباهیکرن ژبۆ فەلسەفا وی یا دلسوز

"The Stranger" catapulted him to fame, and Camus continued producing works

کەسێ بیانی” ئەو ب ناڤو دەنگ کر” و کامو ژی بەردەوام بۆ دبەرهەمئینانێ دا

that explored the value of life amidst absurdity

یا کو ڕامانا ژیانێ بۆ دیارکری دناڤا بێ ڕامانیێ دا

many of which circled back to the same philosophical question:

گەلەك ژ وان زڤرینە ڤە بۆ هەمان پرسیار

if life is truly meaningless,

ئەگەر ژیان ژ راستا یا بێ ڕامان بیت،

is committing suicide the only rational response?

ئەرێ خۆ کوشتن ئێکانە بەرسڤا ژیرمەندانە یە؟

Camus’ answer was an emphatic “no.”

بەرسڤا کاموی یا دوپاتکری “نەخێر" بوو

There may not be any explanation for our unjust world,

چێدبیت چ شڕوڤەکرن بۆ ژیانا مە یا نە دادپەروەر نەبن

but choosing to live regardless is the deepest expression

بەلێ پا هەلبژارتنا ژیانێ سەرەرای وان هەمی تشتا

کویرترین دەربرینە بۆ ئازادیا مە یا ڕەسەن

of our genuine freedom.

Camus explains this in one of his most famous essays

کامو ئەڤێ چەندێ د ئێك ژ ب ناڤودەنگترین گوتارا خو دا دبێژیت

which centers on the Greek myth of Sisyphus.

یا کو بەحسێ ئەفسانەیا گریکی یا سیزیفس دکەت

Sisyphus was a king who cheated the gods,

سیزیفس ئەو پاشا بوو یێ خودا خاپاندی

and was condemned to endlessly roll a boulder up a hill.

و هاتە سزادان ب خشاندنا کەڤرەکی بۆ سەر گرەکێ بێ دوماهیك

The cruelty of his punishment lies in its singular futility,

زورداریا سزادانا وی یا د بێکێریا وی یا ئێکانە دا

but Camus argues all of humanity is in the same position.

بەس کامو دبێژیت کو مروڤایەتی هەمی د هەمان ڕەوش دایە

And only when we accept the meaninglessness of our lives

و بتنێ دەمێ ئەم رازیدبین ل سەر بێ ڕامانیا ژیانا مە

can we face the absurd with our heads held high.

ئەم دشێین ب سەربلندی بەرامبەر بێ ڕامانیێ ب راوەستین

As Camus says, when the king chooses to begin his relentless task once more,

وەکی کامو دبێژیت، دەمێ پاشا هەلدبژێریت کو کارێ خو یێ بزەحمەت دەستپێبکەتە ڤە

“One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”

دڤێت مروڤ هزرکەت سیزیفس یێ بەختەوەرە

Camus’ contemporaries weren’t so accepting of futility.

هەڤدەمێت کاموی ب بێکێریێ ڕازینە دبوون

Many existentialists advocated for violent revolution

گەلەك هەبوونخوازا داخازا شورەشەکا توند و تیژ کر

to upend systems they believed were depriving people of agency and purpose.

ژبوو ژناڤبرنا وی سیستەمێ کو ب هزرا وان خەلکی بێبار دکەت ژ هێز و ئارمانجا

Camus responded with his second set of work: the cycle of revolt.

کاموی ب کارێ خو یێ دووێ بەرسڤ دا زڤروکا ڕاپەرینی

In "The Rebel," he explored rebellion as a creative act,

د پەرتوکا “یاخیدەر” دا دیارکر کو یاخیبوون کارەکێ ئاڤاکەرە

rather than a destructive one.

نەکو یێ وێرانکەرە

Camus believed that inverting power dynamics

کامو هزردکەت کو گوهورینا داینامیکێن هێزێ

only led to an endless cycle of violence.

بتنێ دبیتە ئەگەرێ زڤروکەکا بێ دوماهیك یا زورداریێ

Instead, the way to avoid needless bloodshed

شوینا وێ، ڕێکا کو ڕێگریێ ل ئەوان خوین رێشتنێت نە پێدڤی دگریت

is to establish a public understanding of our shared human nature.

ئەوە ب ئاڤاکرنا تێگەهشتنەکا گشتی بو سروشتێ مە یێ مروڤی یێ پارڤەکری

Ironically, it was this cycle of relatively peaceful ideas

ئەڤ زڤروکێت هزرا یێت ب شێوەکێ ڕێژەیی ئاشتیخواز بوون

that triggered his fallout with many fellow writers and philosophers.

کو دەنگێ وی ڤەدای دگەل گەلەك ژ هەڤالێت وی یێت نڤیسەر و فەیلەسوف

Despite the controversy,

سەرەرای ئەوێ پێك نەهاتنێ

Camus began work on his most lengthy and personal novel yet:

کاموی دەست ب درێژترین ڕومانا خو یا تایبەت کر

an autobiographical work entitled "The First Man."

کارەك دەربارەی ژیانا وی “یا کەسی بناڤێ “زەڵامێ یەکەم

The novel was intended to be the first piece in a hopeful new direction:

مەرەما ڕومانێ ببیتە ئێکەمین :پارچە ل ڕێکەکا ب هیڤیبوونێ یا نوی

the cycle of love.

د زڤروکا ڤیانێ دا

But in 1960, Camus suddenly died in a car accident

بەلێ ل ساڵا ١٩٦٠ کاموی ژ نیشکەکێ ڤە گیانێ خۆ ژدەستدا د ڕویدانەکا ترومبێلێ دا

that can only be described as meaningless and absurd.

بتنێ دهێتە نیاسین وەك بێ ڕامان و بێ بایەخ

While the world never saw his cycle of love,

د دەمەکی دا کو جیهانێ چ جارا زڤروکا وی یا ڤیانێ نەدیت

his cycles of revolt and absurdity continue to resonate with readers today.

زڤروکا وی یا یاخیبوون و بێ ڕامانیێ هەتا نوکە دناڤ خەلکی دا دەنگڤەدەت

His concept of absurdity has become a part of world literature,

بیروکا وی یا بێ ڕامانیێ ،بۆ بەشەك ژ ئەدەبێ جیهانی

20th century philosophy, and even pop culture.

،فەلسەفا چەرخێ ٢٠ێ .و هەروەسا کەلتورەکێ بەرنیاس

Today, Camus remains a trusted guide for moments of uncertainty;

ئەڤرو، کامو دبیتە ڕێبەرەکێ باوەرپێکری بۆ دەمێت گومانلێکری

his ideas defiantly imbuing a senseless world with inspiration

هزرێت وی ب توندی کاریگەریێ ل جیهانەکا بێ هەست دکەن ب ئیلهاما

rather than defeat.
