In the sun-dappled streets of a small town,

Years later, the king was traveling his realm,

The youth eagerly set out to deliver the message—

That night, roaming bandits stumbled upon his camp.

When the king returned, he was furious.

But he couldn’t execute his daughter’s beloved without reason.

بەڵام نەی دەتوانی خۆشەویستی کچەکەی بەبێ هیچ هۆکارێک بیکوژێت.

So he devised a diabolical trial.

هەربۆیە پادشا پلانی تاقیکردنەوەیەکی ئەهریمانەنایەی ئالۆزی دانا.

He ordered the youth to travel to Hell itself,

فەرمانی بە گەنجەکە کرد تا بۆ دۆزەخ گەشت بکات

and return with three golden hairs freshly plucked from the Devil’s head.

و لەگەڵ سێ مووی ئاڵتوونی تازەی سەری ئەهریمەنێک بگەڕێتەوە.

Only upon succeeding could he return to his bride.

ئەگەر توانی سەکەوتن بە دەست بهێنێت ئەوە دەتوانێت بۆ لای بوکە خان بگەڕێتەوە.

The youth searched across the land for the entrance to Hell,

گەنجەکە بە شانشینەکە دا گەشی دەکرد بۆ دەرگای دۆزەخ

until he finally reached an eerie village.

تا لە کۆتایەکەی بە گوندێکی سەیر گەیشت.

Here, he saw some villagers gathered around a well.

لەوێ، بێنی گوندنشینەکان بە دووری بیرێک دا خربۆنەتنەوە،

They closed in on the youth, refusing to let him pass

لە گەنجەکە کشانەوە، رێگایان نەدا گەنجەکە بە گوندەکە تێبپەڕیت

until he answered their question: why was the well dry?

تاوەکو وڵامی پرسیارێکیان نەداتەوە: بۆچی ئاوی بیرەکە وشکی کردوە؟

The youth replied, “I will answer when I return.”

گەنجەکەش وڵامی دانەوە و گووتی " کاتێک گەڕامەوە وڵامتان دەدەمەوە"

They directed him further into town,

ئەوانیش ڕێگەی شارۆچکەکەیان پیشاندا.

where he came across another set of villagers contemplating a gnarled tree.

دووبارە بە کۆمەڵێک گوندنشینی دیکە گەیشت کە کلەیان لە پێچ خوادووی دارێک دەکرد.

They refused to let him pass until he answered their question:

ڕێگەیان نەدا تێپەڕبێت تاوەکو وڵامی پرسیارێکیان نەداتەوە:

why was the tree barren?

بۆچی ئەم دارە بەر ناگرێت؟

Again, the youth responded, “I will answer when I return."

دووبارە، گەنجەکە وڵامی دایەوە و گووتی "کاتێک کە گەڕامەوە وڵامتان دەدەمەوە."

These villagers guided him to the dock, where an elderly ferryman awaited.

گوندنشینەکان بۆ بەندەرەکە ڕێنوێنیان کرد ئەو شوێنەی بەلەمەوانە پیرەکە چاوەرێ دەکات.

As he paddled through the black water, the ferryman rasped a third question:

کاتێک بەلەمەوانەکە لە ئاوە ڕەشەکە سەوڵی لێدەدا پرسیاری سێیەمی لێکرد:

how can I escape my interminable task?

چۆن لەم ئەرکە بێ کۆتایە ڕزگارم دەبێت؟

Once more, the youth promised, “I will answer when I return.”

جارێکی دیکە گەنجەکە بەڵێنی دا "کاتێک گەڕامەوە وڵامی پرسیارەکەت دەدەمەوە."

At last, they reached a hut sinking into the swampy banks of Hell.

لە کۆتایەکەی، بە کۆشکی نقووم بووی گەیشتن لەوێشەوە بۆناو سەرچاوەی زەلکاوی دۆزەخ.

Reluctantly, the youth knocked on the rotting door.

بەنابەدڵیەوە، بەهێواشی لە دەرگاکەی دا.

The devil’s grandmother answered his call.

She was known to help some visiting souls, and harm others.

The youth had just finished his story when they heard the devil’s footsteps.

Without warning, the boy’s world appeared to shrink.

بەبێ هیچ ئاگادارکردنەوەێک، کورەکە زۆر ترسا.

The devil’s grandmother lifted him into the folds of her sleeve,

داپیری ئەهریمەنەکە گەنجەکەی بۆ ناو قۆڵە لوولدراوەکە بەرزکردەوە،

and welcomed her grandson.

The old woman set to work, lavishing the devil with food and drink.

When he fell asleep, she deftly plucked three gleaming hairs from his head.

With each plucked hair, the Devil briefly awoke and complained about his dreams,

full of nearby villagers and their problems.

کە خەونەکانی باسی گوندنشینەکان و کیشەکانیان دەکرد.

The next morning, the youth departed—

بەیانی دواتر گەنجەکە دۆزەخی بە

armed with three golden hairs, and three pieces of information.

بە سێ مووی ئاڵتوونی و سێ زانیاری کورت بە جێهێشت.

He shared the devil’s first dream with the ferryman.

یەکەم خەوی ئەهریمەنەکەی لەگەڵ بەلەمەوانەکە هاوبەشی پێ کرد.

If the boatman could hand his oars to a willing passenger,

گەر بەلەمەوانەکە سەوڵەکانی بە سەرنشینێک بدات، و سەرنشینەکە بەویستی خۆی قبووڵی بکات،

he would be free from his task.

ئەوا ئەوە لە ئەرکەکەی ڕزگاری دەبێت.

Back at the village, the youth declared that there was a mouse

گەڕایەوە گوندەی دووم گەنجەیە ئاشکرای کرد کە مشکێک

gnawing at the root of the tree, and an enormous toad blocking the well.

ڕەگی دارەکە دەقرتێنێت و وەڵامی گوندی یەکەمیش بۆقێکی گەورە ئاوی بیرەکەی گرتووە.

The villagers rewarded him handsomely for his help.

گوندنشینەکانیش پاداشتێکی باشیان کرد بۆ یارمەتیەکەی.

Back from his journey, the youth thrust the devil’s hairs at the king—

گەنجەکە لە گەشتەکەی گەڕایەوە، مووی ئەهریمەنەکەی بە پادشا دا-

but his greedy father-in-law only had eyes for the gold.

بەڵام خەزورە بەخیلەکەی تەنها چاوی لەسەر ئاڵتونەکە بوو.

The sly youth told the king that even greater wealth awaited him

گەنجە فێڵبازەکە بە پادشای گووت کەوا سامانی زیاتر چاوەرێ ئەو دەکات

across the river.

لەو سەری ڕووبارەکە

Immediately, the king hastened to the riverbank.

بەخێرای، پادشا بۆ سەرچاوەی ڕووبارەکە کەوەتە ڕێ،

Eager to claim his riches,

بەپەرۆشە تا دەوڵەمەنت بێت.

he held out his hands impatiently to the grinning ferryman—

بەبێ ئارامانە دەستەکانی درێژ کرد

who happily handed over his oars.

بەلەمەوانەکەش بە زەردەخەنەوە و دلخۆشیەوە سەۆڵەکانی پێدا.
