The tale of the boy who tricked the Devil - Iseult Gillespie

धूप में डूबी हुई एक छोटे से कस्बे की एक गली में

In the sun-dappled streets of a small town,

a proud mother showed off her newborn son.

एक माँ ने पुत्र को जन्म दिया।

Upon noticing his lucky birthmark,

उस बच्चे के जन्मदाग को देखकर,

townsfolk predicted he would marry a princess.

लोगों ने यह भविष्यवाणी की कि इस बच्चे कि शादी किसी राजकुमारी से होगी।

But soon, these rumors reached the ears of the wicked king.

लेकिन जल्द ही यह बात दुष्ट राजा के कानों तक पहुँच गई।

Enraged, the king stole the child away, and sent him hurtling down the river.

गुस्से में राजा ने बच्चे को चुरा कर नदी में बहा दिया।

But the infant’s luck proved greater than the king’s plan.

लेकिन बच्चे का भाग्य राजा की योजना से बड़ा था।

Years later, the king was traveling his realm,

कई सालों के बाद राजा अपने राज्य का भ्रमड़ कर रहे थे,

when he spotted a strapping young man with an uncanny birthmark.

तभी उन्होंने एक नवयुवक के शरीर पर विचित्र जन्मदाग देखा।

After confirming the child’s origins,

उसकी पूछताछ के बाद

the sly king entrusted the boy with a letter for the queen.

चालाक राजा ने उसे रानी को पत्र ले जाने का कार्य सौंपा।

The youth eagerly set out to deliver the message—

नवयुवक उत्सुकता से पत्र देने के लिए चल पड़ा,

not knowing he was carrying his own death sentence.

पर उसे यह नहीं पता था कि वह अपने मरने का पैगाम स्वयं ले जा रहा है|

That night, roaming bandits stumbled upon his camp.

उस रात को कुछ डाकू उसके कैंप में आकर रुके।

Yet when they read the brutal letter, they were filled with pity.

जब डाकुओं ने उस क्रूर पत्र को पढ़ा, उन्हें दया आ गयी।

Deciding to make trouble for the king instead, they scribbled a new note.

राजा को परेशान करने का निश्चय करके उन्होंने नया पत्र लिख दिया।

As soon as the youth arrived at the palace,

जैसे ही नवयुवक राजमहल पहुँचा

he locked eyes with the princess.

उसकी आँखे राजकुमारी की आँखों से मिल गयी।

The two felt destined for each other.

उन दोनों को ऐसा लगा कि वे दोनों एक दूसरे के लिए बने है।

And when the queen read that the king approved this union,

और जब रानी ने पत्र में उनकी शादी के प्रस्ताव के बारे में पढ़ा

she joyfully organized a whirlwind wedding.

तो उन्होंने हंसी-ख़ुशी उन दोनों की शादी धूमधाम से कर दी|

When the king returned, he was furious.

जब राजा वापस लौटा तब वह गुस्से से बौखला उठा।

But he couldn’t execute his daughter’s beloved without reason.

लेकिन वह अपनी पुत्री के पति को बिना किसी कारण मार नहीं सकता था।

So he devised a diabolical trial.

इसीलिए उसने एक योजना बनाई।

He ordered the youth to travel to Hell itself,

उसने नौजवान को नरक में जाने का हुक्म दिया

and return with three golden hairs freshly plucked from the Devil’s head.

और शैतान के सिर से तीन स्वर्ण बाल लेकर वापस आने के लिए बोला।

Only upon succeeding could he return to his bride.

और कहा कि सफल होने पर वह अपनी पत्नी के पास वापस आ सकता है।

The youth searched across the land for the entrance to Hell,

नवयुवक ने नरक में जाने का प्रवेश द्वार हर जगह तबतक ढूँढा

until he finally reached an eerie village.

जबतक वह एक भयानक गाँव में नहीं पहुँच गया।

Here, he saw some villagers gathered around a well.

यहाँ पर उसने कुछ ग्रामीड़ों को एक कुँए के पास एकत्रित देखा।

They closed in on the youth, refusing to let him pass

उन लोगों ने नवयुवक को आगे जाने के लिए तब तक रोका जब तक

until he answered their question: why was the well dry?

वो उनके प्रश्न का उत्तर न दे कि - कुआँ क्यों सूख गया ?

The youth replied, “I will answer when I return.”

नवयुवक ने कहा कि वह वापस आते समय उनके प्रश्न का उत्तर दे देगा।

They directed him further into town,

लोगों ने फिर उसे आगे जाने दिया,

where he came across another set of villagers contemplating a gnarled tree.

जहाँ उसे कुछ लोग एक सूखे पेड़ का निरीक्षण करते हुए दिखाई दिए।

They refused to let him pass until he answered their question:

उन्होंने उसे आगे जाने से रोक दिया और पूछा कि

why was the tree barren?

यह पेड़ क्यों सूख गया ?

Again, the youth responded, “I will answer when I return."

युवक ने फिर से कहा कि वापस आते वक़्त वह बताएगा ।

These villagers guided him to the dock, where an elderly ferryman awaited.

गांववासियों ने उसे एक बंदरगाह की तरफ भेज दिया जहाँ एक बूढ़ा माँझी इंतजार कर रहा था।

As he paddled through the black water, the ferryman rasped a third question:

नौका विहार करते वक़्त, माँझी ने उससे तीसरा प्रश्न पूछा -

how can I escape my interminable task?

"मैं किस तरह से इस कभी न खत्म होने वाले काम से मुख्त हो सकता हूँ ?"

Once more, the youth promised, “I will answer when I return.”

एक बार फिर से युवक ने वादा किया कि वापस आते वक़्त वो उसके प्रश्न का उत्तर भी देगा।

At last, they reached a hut sinking into the swampy banks of Hell.

अंत में, वे नर्क के दलदली तट पर एक झोपड़ी में पहुँच गए।

Reluctantly, the youth knocked on the rotting door.

झिझकते हुए युवक ने दरवाजा खटखटाया।

The devil’s grandmother answered his call.

शैतान की दादी ने दरवाजा खोला।

She was known to help some visiting souls, and harm others.

वो बाहर से आने वाले लोगों की मदद करने के लिए जानी जाती थी।

The youth had just finished his story when they heard the devil’s footsteps.

शैतान की चहलकदमी सुनाने से पहले युवक अपनी कहानी सुना चुका था।

Without warning, the boy’s world appeared to shrink.

बिना किसी चेतावनी के युवक छोटा होता गया।

The devil’s grandmother lifted him into the folds of her sleeve,

शैतान की दादी ने उसे उठाया और अपनी आस्तीन में छुपा लिया

and welcomed her grandson.

और फिर शैतान का स्वागत किया।

The old woman set to work, lavishing the devil with food and drink.

बूढी औरत फिर काम पर लग गयी, उसने शैतान को खाना और पानी दिया।

When he fell asleep, she deftly plucked three gleaming hairs from his head.

जब फिर जब वह सोया तो दादी ने तीन चमकते हुए बाल उसके सिर से निकाल लिए।

With each plucked hair, the Devil briefly awoke and complained about his dreams,

प्रत्येक निकाले गए बालों के साथ उसकी नींद थोड़ी से खुलती और वह

full of nearby villagers and their problems.

अपने सपने में गाँववालों की समस्याओं के बारे में बड़बड़ाता।

The next morning, the youth departed—

अगली सुबह युवा वहाँ से निकला

armed with three golden hairs, and three pieces of information.

उसके पास तीन सुनहरे बाल है और तीन समस्याओं का समाधान है।

He shared the devil’s first dream with the ferryman.

उसने फेरीवाले के साथ शैतान के पहले सपने को साझा किया

If the boatman could hand his oars to a willing passenger,

अगर माँझी अपने चप्पू किसी यात्री को दे दे,

he would be free from his task.

तो वह इस कार्य से मुख्त हो जाएगा।

Back at the village, the youth declared that there was a mouse

वापस गाँव में, युवक ने बताया कि पेड़ की जड़ को

gnawing at the root of the tree, and an enormous toad blocking the well.

एक चूहा खा रहा है और एक बड़ा मेढक कुँए के पानी को रोके हुए है।

The villagers rewarded him handsomely for his help.

गाँव के लोगों ने युवक को धन से पुरस्कृत किया।

Back from his journey, the youth thrust the devil’s hairs at the king—

यात्रा के बाद, युवक ने शैतान के तीन बाल राजा को सौंप दिए

but his greedy father-in-law only had eyes for the gold.

लेकिन लालची राजा की नजर केवल सोने पर थी।

The sly youth told the king that even greater wealth awaited him

चालक नवयुवक ने राजा को बताया कि इससे कई गुना ज्यादा धन नदी के उस पार

across the river.

उसका इंतजार कर रहा है।

Immediately, the king hastened to the riverbank.

तुरंत ही राजा नदी की ओर दौड़ा।

Eager to claim his riches,

धन पाने के लिए उत्सुक राजा ने

he held out his hands impatiently to the grinning ferryman—

अपने हाथ माँझी के सामने फैलाये तो मुस्कराते हुए माँझी

who happily handed over his oars.

ने अपना चप्पू राजा को सौंप दिया।
