The talented young herbalist named Xu Xian was in trouble.

and the resentful man sold him rotten herbs.

و پیاوە بێزارکەرەکە گژوگیای خراپ بووی پێ فرۆشت.

As Xu Xian wondered what to do with this useless inventory,

سو شیان سەرسام ببوو کە چی لەو کەرستە بێسوودانە بکات،

patients flooded into his shop.

نەخۆشەکان بە لێشاو هاتن بۆ فرۆشگەکەی.

A plague had stricken the city,

پەتایەک تووشی شارەکە ببوو،

and he had nothing to treat them.

و ئەو هیچ شتێکی نەبوو تاوەکو چارەسەریان بکات.

Just as he was starting to panic,

کە ئەو دەترسا،

his wife, Bai Su Zhen, produced a recipe to use the rotten herbs as medicine.

Her remedy cured all the plague-afflicted citizens immediately.

Xu Xian’s former boss even had to buy back some of the rotten herbs

to treat his own family.

بۆ چارەسەرکردنی خێزانەکەی خۆی.

Shortly after, a monk named Fa Hai approached Xu Xian,

کەمێک دوای ئەوە، ڕەبەنێک بەناوی فا های چووە لای سو شیان،

warning him that there was a demon in his house.

ئاگاداری کردەووە کە شەیتانێک لە ماڵەکەیدا هەیە.

The demon, he said, was Bai Su Zhen.

ئەو وتی، شەیتانەکە بەی سو جینە.

Xu Xian laughed.

سو شیان پێکەنی.

His kindhearted, resourceful wife was not a demon.

هاوژینە دڵباش و بەتواناکەی شەیتان نییە.

Fa Hai insisted.

فا های سووربوو.

He told Xu Xian to serve his wife realgar wine on the 5th day of the 5th month,

بە سو شیانی وت شەڕابی ڕیلگار بدات بە هاوژینەکەی لە ڕۆژی پێنجی مانگی پێنج،

when demons’ powers are weakest.

کاتێک هێزی شەیتانەکان لاوازترینە.

If she wasn’t a demon, he explained, it wouldn’t hurt her.

ڕوونی کردەوە، ئەگەر ئەو شەیتان نەبوو، ئەوە ئازاری نادات.

Xu Xian dismissed the monk politely,

سو شیان بەڕێزەوە ڕەبەنەکەی دەرکرد،

with no intention of serving Bai Su Zhen the wine.

بێ هیچ نیازێک بۆ پێدانی شەڕاب بە بەی سو جین.

But as the day approached, he decided to try it.

بەڵام کاتێک ڕۆژەکە هات، بڕیاریدا تاقی بکاتەوە.

As soon as the wine touched Bai Su Zhen’s lips,

هەر کە شەڕابەکە گەیشتە لێوی بەی سو جین،

she ran to the bedroom, claiming she wasn’t feeling well.

ڕایکرد بۆ ژووری نوستنەکە، ووتی کە هەست بە باشی ناکات.

Xu Xian prepared some medicine and went to check on her.

But instead of his wife,

he found a giant white serpent with a bloody forked tongue in the bed.

He collapsed, killed by the shock.

When Bai Su Zhen opened her eyes,

کاتێک بەی سو جین چاوەکانی کردەووە،

she realized immediately what must have happened.

ڕاستەوخۆ زانی کە دەبێت چی ڕوویدابێت.

The truth was that Bai Su Zhen was an immortal snake

ڕاستیەکە ئەوەبوو کە بەی سو جین مارێکی نەمرە

with formidable magical powers.

بە هێزی جادووگەرانەی ترسناک

She had used her powers to take a human form

in the forbidden peaks of the Kun Lun Mountains.

لە لووتکە قەدەغەکراوەکانی چیاکانی کون لون.

She rode to the mountains on a cloud,

بە هەورێک چوو بۆ چیاکان،

then continued on foot passed gateways and arches

دواتر بە پێ بەردەوام بوو دەروازە و تاقەکانی تێپەڕاند

until she reached one marked “beyond mortals”

هەتا گەیشتە یەکێک نیشانەکرابوو “لەدوای مۆرتاڵەکان“

hanging over a silver bridge.

لەسەر پردێکی زیوی هەڵواسرابوو.

On the other side,

لە لاکەی تر،

دوو بەردەستی پیاوە پیرەکە پاسەوانی ڕووەکەکەیان دەکرد.

two of the Old Man’s disciples guarded the herb.

Bai Su Zhen disguised herself as a monk

بەی سو جین خۆی وەک ڕەبەنێک گۆڕی

and told them she’d come to invite the Old Man to a gathering of the gods.

و پێی ووتن هاتووە تا پیاوە پیرەکە بانگێشت بکات بۆ کۆبوونەوەی خواوەندەکان.

While they relayed her message,

لەکاتێکدا ئەوان پەیامی ئەویان گواستەوە،

she plucked some leaves from the herb and ran.

هەندێک گەڵای لە ڕووەکەکە لێکردەووە و ڕایکرد.

The servants realized they had been tricked and chased her.

خزمەتکارەکان بۆیان دەرکەوت کە فێڵیان لێکراوە و بەدوای کەوتن.

Bai Su Zhen coughed up a magic ball and threw it at one.

بەی سو جین تۆپێکی جادوویی دروست کرد و هاویشتی بۆ یەکێکیان.

As the other closed in on her,

کە ئەوی تر لێی نزیک بوویەوە،

she put the herb under her tongue for safekeeping,

گیاکەی خستە ژێر زمانی بۆ ئەوەی بی پارێزێت،

but its magic forced both of them into their true forms.

بەڵام جادووەکەی هەر دووکیانی گەڕاندەووە سەر شێوە ڕاستەکەی خۆیان.

As the crane’s long beak clamped around her,

کە باڵندە دەنووک درێژەکە گازی لێگرت،

the Old Man appeared.

پیاوە پیرەکە بەدەرکەوت.

Why, he asked, would she risk her life to steal his herb

پرسی، بۆچی ئەو دەبێت ژیانی خۆی بخاتە مەترسی بۆ دزینی ڕووەکەکە

when she was already immortal?

کاتێک ئەو خۆی نەمرە؟

Bai Su Zhen explained her love for Xu Xian.

بەی سو جین خۆشەویستی خۆی بۆ سو شیان ڕوونکردەوە.

Even if he didn’t want to be with her now that he knew she was a demon,

تەنانەت ئەگەر نەیویستبێت لەگەڵی بێت ئێستا کە دەیزانی ئەو شەیتانە،

she was determined to bring him back to life.

ئەو سوور بوو بۆ ئەوەی بیگەڕێنێتەوە بۆ ژیان.

The two had a karmic connection dating back more than a thousand years.

When Bai Su Zhen was a small snake,

کاتێک بەی سو جین مارێکی بچووک بوو،

a beggar was about to kill her,

but a kind passerby rescued her.

بەڵام ڕێبوارێکی میهرەبان ڕزگاری کرد.

Her rescuer was Xu Xian in a past life.

سو شیان ڕزگارکەرەکەی بوو لە ژیانی ڕابردوودا.

Touched by her willingness to risk her life for him,

وروژا بە ویستەکانی بۆ ئەوەی ژیانی خۆی بخاتە مەترسی بۆی،

the Old Man permitted her to leave the mountain with the immortal herb.

پیاوە پیرەکە ڕێیپێدا لەگەڵ ڕووەکە نەمرەکە چیایەکە جێبێڵێت.

Bai Su Zhen returned home to revive Xu Xian.

بەی سو جین گەڕاوە ماڵەوە بۆ زیندووکردنەوەی سو شیان.

When he opened his eyes,

کاتێک چاوەکانی کردەووە،

the terrified look frozen on his face became a smile.

سەیرکردنە چەقبەستووە ترسناکەکە لەسەر ڕووخساری بووە زەردەخەنە.

Demon or not,

شەیتان بێت یان نا

he was still happy to see his wife.

ئەو هێشتا دڵخۆش بوو بە بینینی ژنەکەی.
