Lady is tied to a number of words

وشەی خانم بەستراوەتەوە بە چەند وشەیەکەوە

that seem at first glance

لە یەکەم بینین بەدیار دەکەوێت

etymologically unrelated.

بەڵام لە لایەنی زانستی وشەوە، هیچ پەیوەندیان نییە بەیەکەوە

She traces her roots back

ڕەگی ئەم وشەیە دەگەڕێتەوە

to the Old English words hlaf,

بۆ وشە کۆنەکانی ئینگلیزی ‘لاف’،

which referred to a loaf of bread

کە ئاماژەیە بۆ پارچەی نان

and is the direct ancestor of our modern word loaf,

ئەمەش مانای ڕاستەقینەی وشەی نوێی نانە،

and daege,

وشەی ‘دەیج’،

which meant maid

کە بە واتای خزمەتکار دێت

and is the root of our word dairy,

ئەویش ڕەگی وشەی شیرەمەنیە،

the place where the dairymaid works.

ئەمەش ئەو شوێنەیە کە کارمەندی شیرەمەنی کاری لێدەکەن.

Together, hlaf and daege became hlafdige,

بە تێکەڵ کردنی وشەی ‘لاف’ و ‘دەیج’ وشەیەک دروست دەبێت کە ‘لافدەیج’ە

literally loaf maid,

ئەمەش بە مانای وشەیی واتا: خزمەتکاری نان

or, more figuratively, kneader of bread.

بە زمانی خوازە واتا، ئەوەی کە نان دروست دەکات.

As early as the ninth century,

لەسەرەتای سەدەی نۆیەمدا،

hlafdige was the name for a mistress of servants,

وشەی ‘لافەیج’ بۆ ئەو کەسە بەکار دەهات کە سەرۆکی خزمەتکارەکان بوو،

or the female head of the household.

یان ئەو ئافرەتەی سەرپەرشتی خێزانەکەی دەکرد.

The Old English word for a male head of household

وشەی ئینگلیزی کۆن بۆ بەخێوکەری ماڵ کە نێرە

was hlafweard,

بریتی بوو لە ‘لافوێرد’،

a compound of hlaf, loaf,

کە لێکدانی وشەی: ‘لاف’ نان،

and weard,

و ‘ویەرد’

which meant keeper

کە بە مانای چاودێر دێت

and is the word of modern words

ئەمەش بنچینەی وشە نوێیەکانی

like ward and warden.

‘وارد’ چاودێری نێر و ‘واردن’ چاودێری مێ.

Both hlafweard, the breadwinner,

هەردوو وشەی ‘لافوێرد’، کە مانای بەخێوکەری ماڵ دێت،

and hlafdige, the bread kneader,

و وشەی ‘لافێج’، بە مانای دروستکەری نان دێت،

came to be titles of respect,

وای لێهات کە وەک نازناوێک بۆ ڕێزگرتن بەکاربێت،

referring to citizens of higher social standing.

ئاماژە بە هاوڵاتیانی ئاستی کۆمەڵایەتی بەرز دەکات.

Through a process known as syncopation,

لە ڕێگەی کردارێک کە ناسراوە بە ‘هەمەچەشنی ڕیتم’

both words lost their internal sounds

هەریەک لە دوو وشەکە دەنگە ناوەکیەکانیان لە دەستدا

to become lord and lady, respectively.

تا ببنە وشەی بەڕێز و خاتوون.

Though still an expression of courtesy,

لەگەڵ ئەوەشدا تا ئێستا وەک گوزارشت کردن لە خۆش دووان دێت

lady has since moved

لە دوای ئەوە وشەی خانم دابەزی

down the ladder of social standing

بۆ خوارەوە لە ئاستە کۆمەڵایەتیەکە

and is now often used

لە ئێستادا زیاتر بەکاردێت

to mean simply a woman.

تا بە سادەیی واتای ئافرەت ببەخشێت.
