Lady is tied to a number of words

خاتوون بە ووشە گەلێکەوە گرێدراوە

that seem at first glance

کە لە سەیرکردنێکی سەرپێیدا

etymologically unrelated.

لە ڕووی وشەسازیەوە پەیوەست نین.

She traces her roots back

وشەی she کە رەگەکەی دەگەڕێتەوە

to the Old English words hlaf,

بۆ ووشەی hlaf لە زمانی ئینگلیزی کۆندا،

which referred to a loaf of bread

کە بە واتایی پارچە صەمونێک دەهات

and is the direct ancestor of our modern word loaf,

و باوانی وشەی مۆدیرنی ئێمە loaf،

and daege,

و وشەی daege،

which meant maid

کە بەواتایی خوڵام کار دێت

and is the root of our word dairy,

کە رەگی وشەی کارگەی شیرەمەنییە dairy,

the place where the dairymaid works.

ئەو شوێنەیە کە کرێکارانی درووست کردنی شیرەمەنی تێیدا ئیش دەکەن.

Together, hlaf and daege became hlafdige,

hald و daege پێکەوە دەبنە hlafidige،

literally loaf maid,

کە بەواتایی خاتوونی درووست کردنی صەمون دێت loaf maid،

or, more figuratively, kneader of bread.

یان بە واتای هەویرشێلەر دێت.

As early as the ninth century,

لە دەوربەری سەدەی نۆزدەدا،

hlafdige was the name for a mistress of servants,

hlafdige بەواتایی خاتوونی خوڵامکارەکان دەهات

or the female head of the household.

یان ئەو خاتوونەی بەرپرسی پاک و خاوێنی کۆشک دێت.

لە ئینگلیزی کۆندا وشەیەک بۆ ئەو پیاوەی بەرپرسی بەڕێوەبردنی کۆشکە بریتیبوو

The Old English word for a male head of household

was hlafweard,

لە halfweard،

a compound of hlaf, loaf,

کە لە وشەی half، و loaf پێکدێت،

and weard,

وweard،

which meant keeper

کە بە واتایی ڕاگر دێت

and is the word of modern words

کە ڕەگی وشەگەلی مۆدێرنی وەک

like ward and warden.

ward و warden ە.

Both hlafweard, the breadwinner,

وشەکانی hlafweard, ڕاگری ماڵەکە،

and hlafdige, the bread kneader,

and hlafdige, هەویر شێلەرەکە،

came to be titles of respect,

بەواتایی ڕێز و شکۆ دەهاتن،

referring to citizens of higher social standing.

بۆ ئاماژە کردن بۆ شکۆی ئەو شارنشینانەی کە لە پاییەی بەرزی کۆمەڵایەتیدا بوون.

Through a process known as syncopation,

لە ڕێگەی پڕۆسەیەکەوە کە پێی دەوترێت کورتکردنەوە،

both words lost their internal sounds

هەردوو وشەکە دەنگە ناوەکیەکانیان لە دەست دەدەن و

to become lord and lady, respectively.

بە دوای یەک دەبنە وشەی lord و lady.

Though still an expression of courtesy,

هەرچەندە هێشتا هەر بۆ پیا هەڵدان بەکار دەهێنرێن،

lady has since moved

وشەی lady پلەی ڕێز و شکۆیەکەی

down the ladder of social standing

هاتۆتە خوارەوەی ڕیزبەندی پێگەی کۆمەڵایەتی

چونکە لە ئێستا بە واتایەک بەکار دێت

and is now often used

to mean simply a woman.
