So, my mother's a pediatrician,

and when I was young, she'd tell the craziest stories

This was my first experience with science fiction,

and I loved it.

So when I started to write my own science fiction and fantasy,

I was surprised that it was considered un-African.

So naturally, I asked, what is African?

And this is what I know so far:

Africa is important.

Africa is the future.

It is, though.

And Africa is a serious place where only serious things happen.

So when I present my work somewhere, someone will always ask,

Wanneer ik mijn werk ergens presenteer, is er dus altijd wel iemand die vraagt:

"What's so important about it?

"Waarom is jouw werk zo belangrijk?

How does it deal with real African issues

Hoe gaat het om met de echte Afrikaanse problemen,

like war, poverty, devastation or AIDS?"

zoals oorlog, armoede, verwoesting of AIDS?"

And it doesn't.

En dat doet het dus niet.

My work is about Nairobi pop bands that want to go to space

Mijn verhalen gaan over popbandjes uit Nairobi

die naar de ruimte willen reizen

or about seven-foot-tall robots

of over twee meter hoge robots die verliefd worden.

that fall in love.

It's nothing incredibly important.

Het zijn helemaal geen belangrijke dingen.

It's just fun, fierce and frivolous,

Het is gewoon leuk, stoer en luchtig,

as frivolous as bubble gum --

zo luchtig als kauwgum --

"AfroBubbleGum."

'AfroBubbleGum'.

So I'm not saying that agenda art isn't important;

Ik zeg dus niet dat kunst met een agenda niet belangrijk is;

I'm the chairperson of a charity

ik ben voorzitter van een liefdadigheidsinstelling

that deals with films and theaters that write about HIV and radicalization

die zich inzet voor film en theater over HIV en radicalisering,

and female genital mutilation.

en over genitale verminking bij vrouwen.

It's vital and important art,

Die kunst is ontzettend belangrijk,

but it cannot be the only art that comes out of the continent.

maar het moet niet de enige kunstvorm zijn die van ons continent komt.

We have to tell more stories

We moeten meer verhalen vertellen

that are vibrant.

die bruisen.

The danger of the single story is still being realized.

We lopen nog steeds in de val van een eenzijdig verhaal.

And maybe it's because of the funding.

Misschien komt dat door de funding.

A lot of art is still dependent on developmental aid.

Veel kunst is nog altijd afhankelijk van ontwikkelingsgeld.

So art becomes a tool for agenda.

Hierdoor komt de kunst in dienst van een agenda te staan.

Or maybe it's because we've only seen one image of ourselves for so long

that that's all we know how to create.

Whatever the reason, we need a new way,

and AfroBubbleGum is one approach.

It's the advocacy of art for art's sake.

Het stimuleert kunst om gewoon kunst te zijn.

It's the advocacy of art that is not policy-driven

Het stimuleert kunst die geen uitvloeisel is van de politiek,

or agenda-driven

of van een politieke agenda,

or based on education,

of gebaseerd is op onderwijs,

just for the sake of imagination:

maar gewoon om de fantasie te prikkelen:

AfroBubbleGum art.

AfroBubbleGum kunst.

And we can't all be AfroBubbleGumists.

We hoeven niet allemaal AfroBubbleGummers te zijn.

We have to judge our work for its potential poverty porn pitfalls.

We moeten ervoor waken dat ons werk niet alleen maar over armoede gaat.

We have to have tests that are similar to the Bechdel test,

We moeten testen hebben zoals de Bechdel test

and ask questions like:

en vragen stellen zoals:

Are two or more Africans in this piece of fiction healthy?

zijn twee of meer Afrikanen in dit verzonnen verhaal gezond?

Are those same Africans financially stable and not in need of saving?

Hebben diezelfde Afrikanen een stabiel inkomen en hoeven ze niet gered te worden?

Are they having fun and enjoying life?

Hebben ze lol en plezier in het leven?

And if we can answer yes to two or more of these questions,

En als we twee of meer van die vragen met 'ja' kunnen beantwoorden

then surely we're AfroBubbleGumists.

dan zijn we zeker AfroBubbleGummers.

And fun is political,

En plezier is ook politiek,

because imagine if we have images of Africans who were vibrant

and loving and thriving

als liefhebbende en welvarende mensen

and living a beautiful, vibrant life.

die een mooi en bruisend leven leiden.

What would we think of ourselves then?

Hoe zouden we dan over onszelf denken?

Would we think that maybe we're worthy of more happiness?

Zouden we dan denken dat we wat meer geluk in ons leven verdienen?

Would we think of our shared humanity through our shared joy?

En dat we onze menselijkheid delen door ons gezamenlijk geluksgevoel?

I think of these things when I create.

Hier denk ik over na als ik schrijf.

I think of the people and the places that give me immeasurable joy,

Ik denk aan de mensen en plekken die me zo veel geluk brengen

and I work to represent them.

en dat wil ik uitbeelden in m'n werk.

And that's why I write stories

Daarom schrijf ik verhalen

about futuristic girls that risk everything to save plants

over futuristische meisjes die alles op het spel zetten om planten te redden,

or to race camels

of om aan kamelenraces mee te doen,

or even just to dance,

of gewoon om te dansen,

to honor fun,

om plezier een ereplek te geven,

because my world is mostly happy.

And I know happiness is a privilege in this current splintered world

En ik besef dat geluk een privilege is in deze huidige versplinterde wereld,

where remaining hopeful requires diligence.

But maybe, if you join me in creating, curating and commissioning

Maar wie weet, als iedereen zich inzet voor het maken en stimuleren

more AfroBubbleGum art,

van meer AfroBubbleGum kunst,

there might be hope for a different view of the world,

dan ontstaat er hopelijk een andere kijk op de wereld,

a happy Africa view

een vrolijk beeld van Afrika,

where children are strangely traumatized

waar kinderen alleen maar trauma's overhouden

by their mother's dark sense of humor,

aan de zwarte humor van hun moeder,

but also they're claiming fun, fierce and frivolous art

maar waar ze ook grappige, stoere en luchtige kunst maken

in the name of all things unseriously African.

Omdat we AfroBubbleGummers zijn

and there's so many more of us than you can imagine.

en we zijn met zo veel meer dan je je kan voorstellen.
