So, my mother's a pediatrician,

and when I was young, she'd tell the craziest stories

that combined science with her overactive imagination.

One of the stories she told was that if you eat a lot of salt,

all of the blood rushes up your legs,

through your body,

and shoots out the top of your head,

She called it "high blood pressure."

This was my first experience with science fiction,

이게 제가 처음 접한 공상과학 이야기였습니다.

and I loved it.

정말 마음에 들었죠.

So when I started to write my own science fiction and fantasy,

I was surprised that it was considered un-African.

이런 장르가 아프리카스럽지 않다고 생각된다는 것이었죠.

So naturally, I asked, what is African?

그럼 아프리카스러운건 무엇일까요?

And this is what I know so far:

제가 지금까지 파악한 바로는

Africa is important.

아프리카는 중요하다.

Africa is the future.

아프리카는 미래이다.

It is, though.

그렇지만

And Africa is a serious place where only serious things happen.

심각한 일들만이 일어나는 극한 곳. 이게 바로 아프리카스러운 거죠.

So when I present my work somewhere, someone will always ask,

그래서 제가 제 작품을 발표할 때면 매번 이러한 질문이 나오게 됩니다.

"What's so important about it?

"무엇이 중요한거죠?

How does it deal with real African issues

이게 아프리카 문제를 어떻게 다루고 있는거죠?

like war, poverty, devastation or AIDS?"

전쟁, 빈곤, 황폐화나 에이즈 문제 말이죠."

And it doesn't.

저는 이런 문제가 아니라

My work is about Nairobi pop bands that want to go to space

우주에 가고 싶은 나이로비 대중음악 밴드나

or about seven-foot-tall robots

사랑에 빠진 2미터 로봇의 이야기를 다루죠.

that fall in love.

It's nothing incredibly important.

이건 심각하게 다뤄질 문제는 아니죠.

It's just fun, fierce and frivolous,

재미있고, 정열적이며, 즐거운

as frivolous as bubble gum --

풍선껌을 부는 것 같이 소소한 즐거움을 주는

"AfroBubbleGum."

"아프리카 풍선껌"이죠.

So I'm not saying that agenda art isn't important;

저는 사회적 예술이 중요하지 않다고 말하려는게 아닙니다.

I'm the chairperson of a charity

저는 영화나 연극을 후원하는 한 자선단체의 의장입니다.

that deals with films and theaters that write about HIV and radicalization

에이즈, 급진화, 여성 할례 문제를 다룬 작품들이 그 대상입니다.

and female genital mutilation.

It's vital and important art,

이런 문제를 다루는 예술은 아주 중요하지만

but it cannot be the only art that comes out of the continent.

아프리카 대륙에서 나올 수 있는 유일한 예술은 아닙니다.

We have to tell more stories

저희는 더 많은 활기찬 이야기를 담아내야만 합니다.

that are vibrant.

The danger of the single story is still being realized.

이야기 소재가 아직도 몇 가지에 한정되어 있는데

And maybe it's because of the funding.

아마 후원에서 비롯된 문제일 겁니다.

A lot of art is still dependent on developmental aid.

아직도 많은 예술이 개발원조에 의존하고 있기 때문에

So art becomes a tool for agenda.

예술은 정치적 안건의 도구가 되었습니다.

Or maybe it's because we've only seen one image of ourselves for so long

또는 저희 자신이 도움이 필요하다고 오랫동안 생각해왔어서 그럴지도 모르죠.

that that's all we know how to create.

다양한 소재를 다룰 수도 있는데 말이죠.

Whatever the reason, we need a new way,

and AfroBubbleGum is one approach.

It's the advocacy of art for art's sake.

It's the advocacy of art that is not policy-driven

어떤 정책을 위한다거나

or agenda-driven

사회적 문제를 다룬다거나

or based on education,

교육에 기반을 둔 예술이 아니라

just for the sake of imagination:

순수한 상상력에서 비롯된 것이죠.

AfroBubbleGum art.

"아프리카 풍선껌"은 그렇습니다.

And we can't all be AfroBubbleGumists.

저희 모두가 이런 예술인이 될 수는 없습니다.

We have to judge our work for its potential poverty porn pitfalls.

저희는 작품이 빈곤의 포르노로 전락하지는 않았는지 판단해야하고

We have to have tests that are similar to the Bechdel test,

벡델 테스트 같은 테스트를 해야 하며

and ask questions like:

이런 질문을 던져야 하죠.

Are two or more Africans in this piece of fiction healthy?

이 작품에 나온 아프리카인들은 건강한가요?

Are those same Africans financially stable and not in need of saving?

경제적으로 어려움에 처해 있거나 도움을 받아야 되는 상황은 아닌가요?

Are they having fun and enjoying life?

그 사람들은 인생을 즐기고 있나요?

And if we can answer yes to two or more of these questions,

이 질문들 중 2개 이상에 '예'라고 답할 수 있다면

then surely we're AfroBubbleGumists.

확실히 "아프리카 풍선껌" 예술인이죠.

And fun is political,

웃음은 정치적입니다.

because imagine if we have images of Africans who were vibrant

아프리카스러운 삶이 이렇다고 가정해보세요.

활기차고, 즐기고, 성공한

and loving and thriving

and living a beautiful, vibrant life.

아름다운 삶이라고 말이죠.

What would we think of ourselves then?

그렇다면 저희가 저희 자신을 어떻게 생각하게 될까요?

Would we think that maybe we're worthy of more happiness?

더 많은 행복을 누릴 가치가 있다고 생각하게 될까요?

Would we think of our shared humanity through our shared joy?

받고 있는 원조를 저희에게 주어진 기쁨으로 받아들일 수 있을까요?

I think of these things when I create.

저는 작품을 만들 때 그런 것들을 고려합니다.

I think of the people and the places that give me immeasurable joy,

저는 측정할 수 없는 기쁨을 주는 사람들이나 장소들을 생각하고

and I work to represent them.

그러한 것들을 보여주려고 노력합니다.

And that's why I write stories

목표를 이루기 위해 모든 걸 바치는 미래 여자아이 이야기를 쓰는 이유죠.

about futuristic girls that risk everything to save plants

지구를 구하기 위해

or to race camels

낙타경주를 위해

or even just to dance,

춤추기 위해, 재미를 위해 모든 걸 바치는 여자아이 말이죠.

to honor fun,

because my world is mostly happy.

제 세상은 행복합니다.

And I know happiness is a privilege in this current splintered world

저는 파편화된 현대 사회에서 행복은 특권이라는 걸 압니다.

where remaining hopeful requires diligence.

남아있는 희망은 근면함을 필요로 하죠.

But maybe, if you join me in creating, curating and commissioning

그러나, 여러분이 저와 뜻을 같이해서

"아프리카 풍선껌" 예술을 만들고, 전파하고, 주문한다면

more AfroBubbleGum art,

there might be hope for a different view of the world,

세상을 다르게 볼 수 있는 희망이 기다리고 있을거예요.

a happy Africa view

행복한 아프리카의 모습 말이죠.

where children are strangely traumatized

아이들이 어머니들의 썰렁한 유머에 질겁하는 모습을 볼 수 있을 거예요.

by their mother's dark sense of humor,

but also they're claiming fun, fierce and frivolous art

아이들은 재미있고 정열적이며 즐거운 예술을 요구하겠죠.

in the name of all things unseriously African.

아프리카스럽지 않은 그런 예술 말이에요.

Because we're AfroBubbleGumists

저흰 '아프리카 풍선껌' 예술인이기 때문이죠.

and there's so many more of us than you can imagine.

저희에겐 생각하시는 것보다 더 많은 이야기가 있죠.
