So, my mother's a pediatrician,

ကျွန်မအမေက ကလေးအထူးကုပါ၊

and when I was young, she'd tell the craziest stories

ကျွန်မ ငယ်ငယ်တုန်းကဆို သိပ္ပံနဲ့ သူမရဲ့ သည်းလွန်းတဲ့ စိတ်ကူး

that combined science with her overactive imagination.

One of the stories she told was that if you eat a lot of salt,

all of the blood rushes up your legs,

This was my first experience with science fiction,

and I loved it.

So when I started to write my own science fiction and fantasy,

I was surprised that it was considered un-African.

So naturally, I asked, what is African?

ဒီတော့ အလွယ်လေးပဲ မေးတာက "အာဖရိကန်ဆိုတာဘာလဲ။"

And this is what I know so far:

ဒါကတော့ ကျွန်မ ခုထိ သိထားသမျှပါ၊

Africa is important.

အာဖရိကဟာ အရေးကြီးတယ်၊

Africa is the future.

အာဖရိကဟာ အနာဂတ်ပါ။

It is, though.

ဒါက အလုံးစုံပါ။

And Africa is a serious place where only serious things happen.

အာဖရိကဟာ လေးနက်တဲ့ အရာတွေပဲ ဖြစ်ပျက်တဲ့ လေးနက်တဲ့ နေရာတစ်ခုပါ။

So when I present my work somewhere, someone will always ask,

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မလက်ရာကို တစ်နေရာရာမှာ တင်ပြတော့ တစ်ယောက်ယောက် အမြဲမေးမှာက

"What's so important about it?

"ဒီအကြောင်းက ဘာများ ဒီလောက် အရေးကြီးတာလဲ၊

How does it deal with real African issues

ဒါက တကယ့် အဖရိကန် ပြဿနာတွေကို ဘယ်လို ဖြရှင်းပေးလဲ။

like war, poverty, devastation or AIDS?"

ဥပမာ စစ်၊ ဆင်းရဲမှု၊ ပျက်စီးမှု (သို့) AIDS ပေါ့။

And it doesn't.

ဒါက ဖြေရှင်းမပေးဘူး။

My work is about Nairobi pop bands that want to go to space

or about seven-foot-tall robots

It's nothing incredibly important.

So I'm not saying that agenda art isn't important;

ဒါနဲ့ လုပ်ငန်းစဉ်က အနုပညာက အရေးမပါဘူးလို့ ပြောနေတာမဟုတ်ဘူး။

I'm the chairperson of a charity

ကျွန်မက HIV၊ ပြောင်းလဲရေးနဲ့

that deals with films and theaters that write about HIV and radicalization

မလိင်အင်္ဂါ ဖြတ်တောက်ခြင်းအကြောင်း ရေးသားတဲ့ ရုပ်ရှင်၊ ပြဇာတ်တွေနဲ့ဆိုင်တဲ့

and female genital mutilation.

လူမှုရေးအသင်းရဲ့ သဘာပတိပါ။

It's vital and important art,

ဒါက အဓိကကျပြီး အရေးပါတဲ့ အနုပညာဆိုပေမဲ့

but it cannot be the only art that comes out of the continent.

ဒီတိုက်က ထွက်တာဆိုလို့ ဒီအနုပညာပဲ မဟုတ်နိုင်ပါဘူး။

We have to tell more stories

တက်ကြွတဲ့ ပြောစရာဇာတ်လမ်းတွေ

that are vibrant.

The danger of the single story is still being realized.

တစ်ပုဒ်တည်းသော ဇာတ်လမ်းရဲ့ အန္တရာယ်က အကောင်အထည်ဖော်နေဆဲပါ။

And maybe it's because of the funding.

ရံပုံငွေကြောင့်လည်း ဖြစ်နိုင်ပါသေးတယ်။

A lot of art is still dependent on developmental aid.

So art becomes a tool for agenda.

Or maybe it's because we've only seen one image of ourselves for so long

that that's all we know how to create.

Whatever the reason, we need a new way,

and AfroBubbleGum is one approach.

It's the advocacy of art for art's sake.

It's the advocacy of art that is not policy-driven

We have to judge our work for its potential poverty porn pitfalls.

လက်ရာကို ၎င်းဖြစ်လာနိုင်တဲ့ မကောင်းတဲ့ ဘေးရန်တွေအတွက် ခန့်မှန်းဖို့လိုတယ်။

We have to have tests that are similar to the Bechdel test,

and ask questions like:

Are two or more Africans in this piece of fiction healthy?

Are those same Africans financially stable and not in need of saving?

Are they having fun and enjoying life?

သူတို့တွေ ပျော်ရွှင်ပြီး ဘဝကို နှစ်ခြိုက်နေကြလား။

And if we can answer yes to two or more of these questions,

ဒီမေးခွန်း နှစ်ခု (သို့) ဒိထက်ပိုပြီး ဟုတ်တယ်လို့ အဖြေရနိုင်ရင်

then surely we're AfroBubbleGumists.

and loving and thriving

What would we think of ourselves then?

ဒါဆို မိမိတို့ကိုယ်ကို ဘယ်လိုထင်မိကြမလဲ။

Would we think that maybe we're worthy of more happiness?

ကျွန်မတို့ ပိုပျော်ရွှင်တာနဲ့ ထိုက်တာ ဖြစ်နိုင်တယ်လို့ထင်လား

Would we think of our shared humanity through our shared joy?

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ တူညီတဲ့ ပျော်ရွှင်မှုကြောင့် တူညီတဲ့ လူ့သဘောသဘာဝကို တွေးမိကြမလား။

I think of these things when I create.

ဖန်တီးစဉ်က ဒီအကြောင်းတွေကို တွေးပါတယ်။

I think of the people and the places that give me immeasurable joy,

တိုင်းတာမရနိုင်တဲ့ ပျော်ရွှင်မှုကိုပေးတဲ့ လူတွေ၊ နေရာတွေကို တွေးပြီး

and I work to represent them.

And that's why I write stories

about futuristic girls that risk everything to save plants

အရာရာကို စွန့်စားတဲ့ ခေတ်လွန် မိန်းကလေး တွေအကြောင်း ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေရေးတယ်၊

or to race camels

(သို့) ကုလာအုပ် ပြေးပွဲလုပ်ဖို့

or even just to dance,

(သို့) ကဖို့သက်သက်၊

to honor fun,

ပျော်ရွှင်မှုကို ဂုတ်ယူဖို့တောင်ပါ၊

because my world is mostly happy.

And I know happiness is a privilege in this current splintered world

where remaining hopeful requires diligence.

But maybe, if you join me in creating, curating and commissioning

there might be hope for a different view of the world,

a happy Africa view

ပျော်ရွှင်တဲ့ အာဖရိက အမြင်ပေါ့၊

where children are strangely traumatized

အဲဒီမှာ ကလေးတွေ သူတို့အမေရဲ့ မှောင်မည်းတဲ့

by their mother's dark sense of humor,

ဟာသဉာဏ်ကြောင့် ထူးဆန်းစွာ သောကရောက်ရာလေ။

but also they're claiming fun, fierce and frivolous art

ဒါပေမဲ့ အလေးအနက်မဟုတ်တဲ့ အာဖရိကန် အရာအားလုံးဆိုတာကြောင့်

in the name of all things unseriously African.

ပျော်ရွင်မှု၊ ခက်ထန်မှုနဲ့ ပေါ့ပြက်ပြက် အနုပညာကိုလည်း တောင်းဆိုနေပါတယ်။

Because we're AfroBubbleGumists

အကြောင်းက ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ AfroBubbleGumist တွေဖြစ်ပြီး

and there's so many more of us than you can imagine.
