I recently read about what the young generation of workers want

One thing that stuck out to me was: don't just talk about impact,

I wanted to make my own impact for those who live under injustice;

it's the reason that I became a documentary journalist,

the reason I became

ئەو هۆکارە بوو

a prisoner in North Korea for 140 days.

کە بەندی کردم لە کۆریای باکوور بۆ ١٤٠ ڕۆژ.

It was March 17, 2009.

لە ١٧ی ئازاری ٢٠٠٩.

It is St. Patrick's Day for all of you,

کە ڕۆژی سەنت پاتریک دەکات بۆ ئێوە،

but it was the day that turned my life upside down.

بەڵام ئەوە ئەو ڕۆژە بوو کە هەموو ژیانمی گۆڕی.

My team and I were making a documentary about North Korean refugees

من و تیمەکەم دۆکیۆمێنتاریمان لەسەر پەنابەرانی کۆریای باکوور دروست دەکرد

living below human life in China.

کە ژیانێکی کەمتر لە مرۆڤیان هەبوو لە چین.

We were at the border.

ئێمە لەسەر سنوور بووین.

It was our last day of filming.

کۆتا ڕۆژی وێنەگرتنمان بوو.

There was no wire fence

شوورەی کارەبایی لێ نەبوو

or bars

یان شیش

or sign to show that it is the border,

یان نیشانەیەک کە بڵێ ئەمە سنوورە،

but this is a place that a lot of North Korean defectors use

بەڵام ئەمە شوێنێک بوو کە یاخیبووانی کۆریای باکوور بەکاریان دەهێنا

as an escape route.

It was still winter,

هێشتا زستان بوو،

and the river was frozen.

When we were in the middle of the frozen river,

we were filming about the condition of the cold weather

وێنەی حاڵەتی کەشە ساردەکەمان دەگرت

and the environment

هەروەها ژینگەکەش

that North Koreans had to deal with

when they seek their freedom.

کاتێک بەدوای ئازادیدا دەڕۆشتن،

And suddenly, one of my team members shouted,

لە پڕێکدا یەکێک لە ئەندامانی تیمەکەم هاواری کرد،

"Soldiers!"

"سەربازەکان!"

So I looked back,

منیش تەماشای دواوەم کرد،

and there were two small soldiers in green uniforms with rifles,

دوو سەربازی بچووک بوون جلی شینیان لەبەردابوو و تفەنگیان پێبوو،

chasing after us.

ڕایان دەکرد بە دواماندا.

We all ran as fast as we could.

هەتا توانیمان خێرا ڕامان کرد.

I prayed that, please don't let them shoot my head.

نزام دەکرد، دەمگوت تکایە فیشەکێک نەنێن بەسەرمەوە.

And I was thinking that,

بیرم لەوە دەکردەوە،

if my feet are on Chinese soil,

ئەگەر قاچم لەسەر خاکی چین بێت،

I'll be safe.

پارێزراو دەبم.

And I made it to Chinese soil.

گەیشتمە سەر خاکی چین.

Then I saw my colleague Laura Ling fall on her knees.

ئیتر بینیم هاوکارەکەم لۆرا کەوتە سەر ئەژنۆ.

I didn't know what to do at that short moment,

نەمدەزانی لەو کاتە کورتە چی بکەم،

but I knew that I could not leave her alone there

بەڵام دەمزانی ناکرێ لەوێدا بەتەنیا بەجێبهێڵم

when she said, "Euna, I can't feel my legs."

کاتێک وتی، "ئیونا هەست بە قاچەکانم ناکەم. "

In a flash, we were surrounded by these two Korean soldiers.

لە یەک چرکەدا ئەم دوو سەربازە کۆرییە چواردەوریان گرتین.

They were not much bigger than us,

بە جەستە زۆر لە ئێمە گەورەتر نەبوون،

but they were determined to take us to their army base.

بەڵام سوور بوون لەسەر ئەوەی کە بمانبەن بۆ بنکە سەربازییەکەیان.

I begged and yelled for any kind of help,

پاڕامەوە و هاوارم کرد بۆ هەر جۆرە یارمەتییەک،

hoping that someone would show up from China.

بەو هیوایەی کە یەکێک لە چینەوە بێت بە هانامەوە.

Here I was, being stubborn

لێرەیا، کەلەڕەق بووم

towards a trained soldier with a gun.

لەبەرامبەر سەربازێکی ڕاهێنراو کە چەکی پێیە.

I looked at his eyes.

تەماشای ناو چاوانیم کرد.

He was just a boy.

کوڕێکی منداڵ بوو.

At that moment, he raised his rifle to hit me,

لەو چرکەیەدا، تفەنگەکەی بەرزکردەوە لێمبدا،

but I saw that he was hesitating.

بەڵام بینیم کە دوودڵ بوو.

His eyes were shaking,

چاوەکانی دەلەرزان،

and his rifle was still up in the air.

تفەنگەکەشی بە ئاسمانەوە بوو،

So I shouted at him,

هاوارم کرد بەسەریدا،

"OK, OK, I'll walk with you."

" باش، باش، لەگەڵت دەڕۆم."

And I got up.

هەستامە سەرپێ.

When we arrived at their army base,

کاتێک گەیشتمە بنکە سەربازییەکەیان،

my head was spinning with these worst-case scenarios,

مێشکم پڕبووبوو لە سیناریۆی ناخۆش،

and my colleague's statement wasn't helping.

قسەی هاوکارەکەشم یارمەتیدەر نەبوون.

She said, "We are the enemy."

دەیگوت، " ئێمە دوژمنین."

She was right: we were the enemy.

ڕاستی دەکرد؛ ئێمە دوژمن بووین.

And I was supposed to be frightened, too.

دەبوایە منیش بترسامایە.

But I kept having these odd experiences.

بەڵام هێشتا ئەم ئەزموونە نامۆیانەم هەبوو.

This time, an officer brought me his coat

لەم کاتەدا، ئەفسەرێک قەمسەڵەکەی خۆی بۆ هێنام

to keep me warm,

بۆ ئەوەی گەرمم بێتەوە،

because I lost my coat on the frozen river

لەبەرئەوەی ئەوەی خۆم لە ڕووبارە بەستووەکە لێکەوت

while battling with one of these soldiers.

کاتێک لەدەست یەکێک لەو سەربازانە ڕامدەکرد.

I will tell you what I mean by these odd experiences.

پێتان دەڵێم مەبەستم لە ئەزموونی نامۆ چییە.

I grew up in South Korea.

لە کۆریای باشوور گەورە بووم.

To us, North Korea was always the enemy,

بۆ ئێمە، کۆریای باکوور هەمیشە دوژمن بووە،

even before I was born.

تەنانەت پێش ئەوەی لە دایک ببم.

South and North have been under armistice for 63 years,

باشوور و باکوور بۆ ماوەی ٦٣ ساڵە لە باری شەڕراگرتندان ،

since the end of the Korean War.

لە دوای کۆتایی هاتنی جەنگی کۆریاوە.

And growing up in the South in the '80s and '90s,

دوای گەشەکردنی باشوور لە هەشتاکان و نەوەدەکاندا،

we were taught propaganda about North Korea.

And we heard so many graphic stories,

such as, a little young boy being brutally killed

by North Korean spies just because he said,

لەلایەن سیخوڕانی کۆریای باکوورەوە تەنها لەبەرئەوەی وتوویەتی،

"I don't like communists."

"من کۆمەنیستەکانم خۆش ناوێت."

Or, I watched this cartoon series

یاخوود ئەو زنجیرە کارتۆنیەم دیوە

about a young South Korean boy defeating these fat, big, red pig,

کەچۆن کوڕێکی گەنجی کۆریای باشوور کە بەرازێکی سووری قەڵەوی زل دەبەزێنێ،

which represented the North Koreans' first leader at the time.

کە نیشانە بوو بۆ یەکەم سەرکردەی کۆریای باکوور لەوکاتەدا.

And the effect of hearing these horrible stories over and over

کاریگەری بیستنی ئەو چیروکانە دووبارە و سێبارە

instilled one word in a young mind:

یەک وشەی لە مێشكی گەنج دروست دەکرد؛

"enemy."

" دوژمن."

And I think at some point, I dehumanized them,

پێموابێـ بۆ ساتێکیش بوبێت وەک مرۆڤ سەیرم نەدەکردن، و

and the people of North Korea became equated

خەڵکی کۆریای باکوور یەکسان کران

with the North Korean government.

بە حکومەتی کۆریای باکوور.

Now, back to my detention.

ئێستا با بگەڕێینەوە بۆ بەندکردنەکەم.

It was the second day

ڕۆژی دووەم بوو

of being in a cell.

کە لە زیندان بووم.

I had not slept since I was out at the border.

لەو کاتەوەی لەسەر سنوور بووم نەنوستبووم.

This young guard came to my cell

پاسەوانێکی گەنج هات بۆ زیندانەکەم

and offered me this small boiled egg

هێلکەیەکی کوڵاوی بچووکی بۆ هێنام

and said, "This will give you strength to keep going."

ووتی،"ئەمە توانات دەداتێ بۆ ئەوەی بەردەوام بیت."

Do you know what it is like,

دەزانی وەک چی وایە،

receiving a small kindness in the enemy's hand?

سۆزێکی بچووک لە دەستی دوژمنەکەت وەربگریت؟

Whenever they were kind to me, I thought the worst case

هەر کاتێک لەگەڵ من باشبوون، بیرم لە خراپترین دەکردەوە

was waiting for me after the kindness.

کە لەدوای ئەم سۆزە بۆم دێ.

One officer noticed my nervousness.

ئەفسەرێک هەستی بە دڵەڕاوکێکەم کرد.

He said, "Did you think we were all these red pigs?"

ووتی،" واتدەزانی هەموومان بەرازی سوورین؟"

referring to the cartoon that I just showed you.

مەبەستی لەو کارتۆنەیە کە ئێستا نیشانمدان.

Every day was like a psychological battle.

هەموو ڕۆژێک وەکوو شەڕێکی دەروونی وابوو.

The interrogator had me sit at a table

لێکۆڵەرەکە لەسەر مێزێک دایدەنیشاندم

six days a week

هەفتەی شەش ڕۆژ

and had me writing down about my journey, my work,

دەربارەی گەشتەکەم، کارەکەم پێی دەنوسیم،

over and over until I wrote down the confession that they wanted to hear.

دووبارە و دووبارە هەتا من دانپێدانانەکەم نووسی کە دەیویست.

After about three months of detention,

دوای نزیکەی سێ مانگ لە بەندکردن،

the North Korean court sentenced me

دادگای کۆریای باکوور سزای دام

to 12 years in a labor camp.

بە ١٢ ساڵ لە کەمپێکی کارکردن.

So I was just sitting in my room to be transferred.

منیش لە ژوورەکەم دانیشتبووم بۆ ئەوەی بگوازرێمەوە.

At that time, I really had nothing else to do,

لەو کاتەدا هیچ شتێک نەبوو بیکەم،

so I paid attention to these two female guards

تەنها تەماشای ئەو پاسەوانە مێیانەم دەکرد

and listened to what they were talking about.

گوێم دەگرت بزانم باسی چی دەکەن.

Guard A was older,

پاسەوانی یەکەم پیرتر بوو،

and she studied English.

وە ئینگلیزی خوێندبوو.

She seemed like she came from an affluent family.

وا دیار بوو لە خێزانێکی دەوڵەمەندەوە هاتبوو.

She often showed up with these colorful dresses,

زۆرجار بە کراسی ڕەنگاوە ڕەنگەوە دەردەکەوت و

and then loved to show off.

حەزی لێبوو خۆی دەربخات.

And Guard B was the younger one,

پاسەوانی دووەم گەنجتر بوو،

and she was a really good singer.

گۆرانیبێژێکی زۆر باش بوو.

She loved to sing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" --

حەزی دەکرد گۆرانییەکەی سیلیندیۆن "دڵم بەردەوام دەبێت" بڵێتەوە --

sometimes too much.

هەندێ جار زۆر زۆر.

She knew just how to torture me without knowing.

دەیزانی چۆن ئەشکەنجەم بدات بێ ئەوەی بەخۆی بزانێت

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

And this girl spent a lot of time in the morning to put on makeup,

ئەم کچە بەیانیان کاتێکی زۆر خەریکی ئارایشت بوو،

like you can see in any young girl's life.

وەک چۆن لە ژیانی هەر کچێکی گەنجدا دەیبینی.

And they loved to watch this Chinese drama,

زۆریان حەز لێبوو تەماشای درامای چینی بکەن،

a better quality production.

دروستکراوێکی کوالیتی بەرزتر،

I remember Guard B said,

بیرمە پاسەوانی دووەم ووتی،

"I can no longer watch our TV shows after watching this."

" ئیتر ناتوانم تەماشای زنجیرە تەلەفزیۆنییەکانی خۆمان بکەم دوای ئەمە."

She got scolded

سەرزەنشت کرا

for degrading her own country's produced TV shows.

چوونکە زنجیرەی وڵاتەکەی خۆی کەم کردۆتەوە.

Guard B had more of a free mind than Guard A,

پاسەوانی دووەم مێشکی لە پاسەوانی یەکەم کراوەتر بوو،

and she often got scolded by Guard A whenever she expressed herself.

لەلایەن پاسەوانی یەکەم سەرزەنشت دەکرا هەرکاتێک ڕای خۆی بگوتایە.

One day, they invited all these female colleagues --

ڕۆژێکیان، هاوکارە مێیەکانیان بانگهێشت کردبوو--

I don't know where they came from --

نەمزانی لە کوێوە هاتبوون--

to where I was held,

بۆ ئەو شوێنەی کە منی لێ بەندکرابووم،

and they invited me

منیشیان بانگهێشت کرد

to their guard room

بۆ ژووری پاسەوانیەکەیان

and asked

پرسیاریان کرد

if one-night stands really happen in the US.

ئەگەر لە ویلایەتە یەکگرتووەکان یەکجار بەیەکەوە خەوتن ڕووبدات.

(Laughter)

This is the country where young couples are not even allowed

لەم وڵاتە گەنجەکانی یەکیان خۆش دەوێت تەنانەت بۆشیان نییە

to hold hands in public.

دەستی یەک بگرن لە دەرەوە.

I had no idea where they had gotten this information,

نەمزانی لە کوێوە ئەم زانیاریانەیان هێنابوو،

but they were shy and giggly even before I said anything.

بەڵام لەخۆیانەوە شەرمیان دەکرد و پێدەکەنین پێش ئەوەی هیچ بڵێم.

I think we all forgot that I was their prisoner,

وابزانم هەموومان بیرمان چووبوەوە کە من بەندکراوم،

and it was like going back to my high school classroom again.

وەک ئەوە وابوو کە بچیتەوە پۆلی ئامادەیی.

And I learned that these girls also grew up watching a similar cartoon,

بۆم دەرکەوت کە ئەم کچانە گەورەبوون بەدیار زنجیرەیەکی تەلەفزیۆنی هاوشێوەوە،

but just propaganda towards South Korea and the US.

بەڵام پڕوپاگەندەکە لە دژی کۆریای باشوور و ئەمریکا بووە،

I started to understand where these people's anger was coming from.

تێگەشتم کە ڕقی ئەم خەڵکە لە کوێوە هاتووە،

If these girls grew up learning that we are enemies,

ئەگەر ئەم کچانە گەورەبووبێتن بەوەی کە ئێمە دوژمنین،

it was just natural that they would hate us

ئاساییە ئەگەر ڕقیان لێمان بێت

just as I feared them.

بەهەمان شێوەی کە من لێیان دەترسام.

But at that moment, we were all just girls

بەڵام لەم چرکەساتانە، تەنها کچ بووین

who shared the same interests,

کەهەمان حەزمان هەبوو،

beyond our ideologies that separated us.

لە پشتی ئەو بیروڕایەی کە جیای کردووینەوە.

I shared these stories with my boss at Current TV at the time

ئەم چیرۆکانەم لەگەڵ بەڕێوەبەرەکەم لە کەرێنت تیڤی باسکرد

after I came home.

ئەو کاتەی کە هاتمەوە ماڵەوە.

His first reaction was,

یەکەم کاردانەوەی ئەوە بوو،

"Euna, have you heard of Stockholm Syndrome?"

"ئونا، کۆنیشانەی ستۆکهۆڵمت بیستووە؟"

Yes, and I clearly remember

بەڵێ، بەتەواوی بیرمە

the feeling of fear

هەستی ترس

and being threatened,

وە هەڕەشەلێکردن،

and tension rising up between me and the interrogator

ئەو دڵەڕاوکێیەی کە لەگەڵ لێکۆەرەکەم دروست دەبوو

when we talked about politics.

کاتێک کە لەسەر سیاسەت قسەمان دەکرد،

There definitely was a wall that we couldn't climb over.

دیوارێک هەبوو کە نەماندەتوانی پێیدا سەربکەوین.

But we were able to see each other as human beings

بەڵام دەماندەتوانی یەکتر وەک مرۆڤ ببینین

when we talked about family,

کاتیك باسی خێزانەکانمان دەکرد،

everyday life,

ژیانی ڕۆژانە،

the importance of the future for our children.

گرنگی داهاتوو بۆ منداڵەکانمان.

It was about a month before I came home.

نزیکەی مانگێک پێش ئەوەی بگەڕێمەوە ماڵەوە.

I got really sick.

زۆر نەخۆش کەوتم.

Guard B stopped by my room to say goodbye,

پاسەوانی دووەم هاتە ژوورەکەم و ماڵئاوای لێکردم،

because she was leaving the detention center.

لەبەرئەوەی بەندینخانەکەی جێدەهێشت.

She made sure that no one watched us,

دڵنیا بوو لەوەی کە کەس تەماشای نەکردین،

no one heard us,

کەس گوێی لێمان نەبوو،

and quietly said,

بە نەرمی وتی،

"I hope you get better

"هیوام وایە باشتر بیت

and go back to your family soon."

بگەڕێیتەوە بۆ لای خێزانەکەت بە زوویی."

It is these people --

ئەم خەڵکەن--

the officer who brought me his coat,

ئەو ئەفسەرەی کە قەمسەڵەکەی بۆ هێنام،

the guard who offered me a boiled egg,

ئەو پاسەوانەی کە هێلکە کوڵاوەکەی بۆ هێنام،

these female guards who asked me about dating life in the US --

پاسەوانە کچەکانی دەربارەی ژیانی خۆشەویستی لە ئەمریکا پرسیاریان لێکردم--

they are the ones that I remember of North Korea:

ئەو شتانەن کە کۆریای باکوورم بیردەخەنەوە؛

humans just like us.

مرۆڤی وەک ئێمە.

North Koreans and I were not ambassadors of our countries,

خەلكانی کۆریای باکوور و من باڵوێزی وڵاتەکانمان نەبووین،

but I believe that we were representing

بەڵام بۆچوونم وایە کە ئێمە نوێنەر بووین

the human race.

بۆ مرۆڤایەتی.

Now I'm back home and back to my life.

من ئێستا گەڕاومەتەوە بۆ ماڵو ژیانم.

The memory of these people has blurred as time has passed.

بیرەوەریەکانی ئەو خەڵکانە تەلخ بوون لەگەڵ کاتدا.

And I'm in this place

من لێرەشم

where I read and hear about North Korea provoking the US.

کە دەخوێنمەوە و دەبیستم کە چۆن کۆریای باکوور ئەمریکا توڕە دەکات.

I realized how easy it is

بۆم دەردەکەوێ کە چەند ئاسانە

to see them as an enemy again.

کە دووبارە وەک دوژمن تەماشایان بکەم.

But I have to keep reminding myself that when I was over there,

بەڵام دەبێ بیری خۆم بخەمەوە بۆ ئەو کاتەی لەوێبووم،

I was able to see humanity

توانیم مرۆڤایەتی ببینم

over hatred

لەسەروو ڕقەوە

in my enemy's eyes.

لە چاوی دووژمنەکەمەوە.
