I recently read about what the young generation of workers want

हाल ही मे मैं हावर्ड बिज़नस रिव्यू मे पढ़ी

in Harvard Business Review.

की युवा पीढ़ी के श्रमिक क्या चाहते हैं।

One thing that stuck out to me was: don't just talk about impact,

एक बात जो मुझे अच्छी लगी की प्रभाव के बारे बात ही नहीं,

but make an impact.

बल्कि प्रभाव बनाना भी चाहिए।

I'm a little bit older than you,

मैं आपलोगो से उम्र मे थोड़ी बड़ी हूँ

maybe much older than you,

थोड़ी ज्यादा भी हो सकती हूँ।

but this is exactly the same goal that I had when I was in college.

लेकिन ये वही गोल हैं जो कॉलेज मे था। मैं अपना ही प्रभाव बनाना चाहती थी

I wanted to make my own impact for those who live under injustice;

उनके लिए जो अन्याय के अधीन जी रहे हैं;

it's the reason that I became a documentary journalist,

इसी कारण से मैं एक डॉक्यूमेंट्री पत्रकार बनी,

the reason I became

जिसके कारण से मैं

a prisoner in North Korea for 140 days.

उत्तर कोरिया मे 140 दिन की कैदी रही।

It was March 17, 2009.

17 मार्च 2009।

It is St. Patrick's Day for all of you,

आपलोगो के लिए संत पैट्रिक दिवस, लेकिन ये

but it was the day that turned my life upside down.

वो दिन था जो मेरे जीवन में उलटफेर ला दिया।

My team and I were making a documentary about North Korean refugees

मैं और मेरी टीम उत्तर कोरिया शरणार्थियों के बारे मे एक डॉक्यूमेंट्री बना रहे थे जो

living below human life in China.

चीन में जानवरो जैसा जी रहे हैं।

We were at the border.

हमलोग बार्डर पर थे।

It was our last day of filming.

हमारे शूटिंग का अंतिम दिन था।

There was no wire fence

ना तो वहाँ कोई तार का घेरा था

or bars

ना बार, या ना तो कोई ऐसा

or sign to show that it is the border,

चिन्ह था जिससे पता चले की यह एक बार्डर हैं,

but this is a place that a lot of North Korean defectors use

लेकिन ये वही रास्ता हैं जिसको कई उत्तर कोरियन लोग पलायन

as an escape route.

के लीए उपयोग करते हैं।

It was still winter,

सर्दी की मौसम थी,

and the river was frozen.

और नदी जमी हुई थी।

When we were in the middle of the frozen river,

जब हमलोग जमी हुई नदी के बीच मे थे,

we were filming about the condition of the cold weather

तब ठंडे मौसम के स्थिति और परिवेश का शूटिंग

and the environment

कर रहे थे

that North Koreans had to deal with

जिसका सामना उत्तर कोरिया के लोगो को करना

when they seek their freedom.

पर रहा था आज़ादी के लिए।

And suddenly, one of my team members shouted,

अचानक से हमारे टीम कि एक सदस्य चिल्लायी,

"Soldiers!"

“सैनिक!”

So I looked back,

तो मैं पिछे देखी,

and there were two small soldiers in green uniforms with rifles,

हरे पोशाक और राइफल के साथ दो सैनिक दिखे,

chasing after us.

जो हमारे तरफ ही आ रहे थे।

We all ran as fast as we could.

हमसे जितना हो सका उतनी तेजी से दौड़े। मैंने प्रार्थना

I prayed that, please don't let them shoot my head.

की, वे हमपर बंदूक ना चलाए।

And I was thinking that,

और मैं ये सोच रही थी

if my feet are on Chinese soil,

यदि मैं चीन बोर्डर के उसपार पहुँच जाती हूँ तो

I'll be safe.

मैं सुरक्षित हो जाऊँगी।

And I made it to Chinese soil.

और मैं वहाँ पहुँच गयी। लेकिन पीछे मुड़कर देखी

Then I saw my colleague Laura Ling fall on her knees.

तो मेरी दोस्त लाउरा लिंग गिरी पड़ी थी।

I didn't know what to do at that short moment,

मुझे समझ नहीं आ रहा था की मैं क्या करूँ

but I knew that I could not leave her alone there

लेकिन मैं उसको वहाँ अकेले नहीं छोड़ सकती थी,

when she said, "Euna, I can't feel my legs."

वो बोली, “उना मेरा पैर।”

In a flash, we were surrounded by these two Korean soldiers.

तुरंत ही, हम उनदोनों कोरियन सैनिको से घिर चुके थे।

They were not much bigger than us,

वेलोग हमसे बड़े नहीं थे

but they were determined to take us to their army base.

लेकिन मन मे ठाने थे की वो हमे अपने आर्मी बेस ले जाएंगे।

I begged and yelled for any kind of help,

मैं इस आशा के साथ मदद की गुहार लगाई की

hoping that someone would show up from China.

चीन के तरफ से कोई तो आए हमारी मदद को।

Here I was, being stubborn

यहां मैं थोड़ी जिद्दी होने लगी,

towards a trained soldier with a gun.

उन सैनिकों के सामने जिनके पास राइफल था।

I looked at his eyes.

मैं उसके आंखो मे देखी।

He was just a boy.

वह एक लड़का था।

At that moment, he raised his rifle to hit me,

उसमे अपना राइफल उठाकर मुझे मारने की कोशिश की,

but I saw that he was hesitating.

लेकिन वो हिचकिचा रहा था।

His eyes were shaking,

उसकी आंखे काँप रही थी,

and his rifle was still up in the air.

और उसकी राइफल अभी भी हवा मे ही थी।

So I shouted at him,

तो मैं उससे बोली,

"OK, OK, I'll walk with you."

“ठीक हैं, ठीक हैं, मैं तुम्हारे चलूँगी।”

And I got up.

मैं उठ खड़ी हुई।

When we arrived at their army base,

जब हम उनके आर्मी बेस पहुंचे,

my head was spinning with these worst-case scenarios,

तो मेरा सर घूम रहा था इस खतरनाक पृष्टिभूमि को सोच कर,

and my colleague's statement wasn't helping.

और मेरे सहयोगी की बात भी मुझे डरा रही थी।

She said, "We are the enemy."

वो बोली, “हमलोग दुश्मन हैं।”

She was right: we were the enemy.

वो सही थी: हम दुश्मन थे।

And I was supposed to be frightened, too.

और मुझे भी इससे डर लगना चाहिए था।

But I kept having these odd experiences.

लेकिन मुझे ये अजीब अनुभव होते रहे।

This time, an officer brought me his coat

इस बार एक ऑफिसर ने मुझे अपना कोट लाकर दिया

to keep me warm,

ताकि मुझे ठंड न लगे,

because I lost my coat on the frozen river

क्यूकी मेरा कोट नदी के पास ही छुट गयी थी

while battling with one of these soldiers.

जब मैं एक सैनिक के साथ झड़प कर रही थी।

I will tell you what I mean by these odd experiences.

इस अजीब अनुभव का मतलब मैं बताती हूं।

I grew up in South Korea.

मैं दक्षिण कोरिया मे पली बड़ी।

To us, North Korea was always the enemy,

हमारे लिए, उत्तर कोरिया हमेशा से दुश्मन था

even before I was born.

मेरे जन्म से पहले से भी।

South and North have been under armistice for 63 years,

दक्षिण और उत्तर कोरिया पिछले 63 वर्षो से युद्धविराम पर हैं, जबसे कोरियन

since the end of the Korean War.

युद्ध का अंत हुआ।

And growing up in the South in the '80s and '90s,

80 और 90 के दशक के दक्षिण मे बड़ा होना,

we were taught propaganda about North Korea.

हमे उत्तर कोरिया के प्रोपगैंडा के बारे बताया गया।

And we heard so many graphic stories,

बनावटी कहानिया भी सुनने को मिली,

such as, a little young boy being brutally killed

जैसे, उत्तर कोरिया के जासूस ने एक छोटे

by North Korean spies just because he said,

बच्चे को मौत के घाट उतार दी बस इसीलिए की उसने बोला, “मुझे

"I don't like communists."

कम्युनिस्ट से नफ़रत हैं।”

Or, I watched this cartoon series

या, मैंने एक कार्टून सिरीज़ देखी थी

about a young South Korean boy defeating these fat, big, red pig,

जो दक्षिण कोरिया के लड़के के बारे था जिसने एक मोटे, बड़े, लाल सुअर को हराया था,

which represented the North Koreans' first leader at the time.

जो उत्तर कोरिया का पहला नेता था।

And the effect of hearing these horrible stories over and over

और ऐसे भयावह कहानिया बार-बार सुनने का प्रभाव ये हुआ की

instilled one word in a young mind:

युवाओ के दिमाग पर एक शब्द छप गयी:

"enemy."

“दुश्मन।”

And I think at some point, I dehumanized them,

और मुझे लगता हैं की मैंने उनका अमानवीयकरण किया

and the people of North Korea became equated

और उत्तर कोरिया के लोग अपने

with the North Korean government.

सरकार के साथ हो चले।

Now, back to my detention.

फिर से अपने कैद पर आए तो।

It was the second day

कैद मे रहते हुये

of being in a cell.

दूसरा दिन हो गया था,

I had not slept since I was out at the border.

जबसे बार्डर से आई थी तब से मैं सोयी नहीं पायी।

This young guard came to my cell

एक युवा सैनिक मेरे सेल मे आया

and offered me this small boiled egg

और मुझे एक उबला अंडा देते हुये

and said, "This will give you strength to keep going."

बोला, “यह तुम्हें तागत देगा।”

Do you know what it is like,

आपको पता हैं उस समय कैसा लगता जब आप अपने

receiving a small kindness in the enemy's hand?

दुश्मन के हाथों से दयालुता पाते हैं?

Whenever they were kind to me, I thought the worst case

जब-जब वेलोग मेरे साथ ऐसा करते तब-तब लगता की कुछ होने वाला हैं,

was waiting for me after the kindness.

इस दयालुता के बाद।

One officer noticed my nervousness.

एक ऑफिसर ने मेरे घबराहट पर गौर किया।

He said, "Did you think we were all these red pigs?"

उसने बोला,“क्या तुम्हें लगता हैं हम ऐसे लाल सुअर की तरह हैं? उस कार्टून को दिखाया

referring to the cartoon that I just showed you.

जो मैंने आपको अभी दिखाई थी।

Every day was like a psychological battle.

हर दिन साइकोलोजिकल युद्ध की तरह था।

The interrogator had me sit at a table

पूछताछ करने वाले मुझे टेबल पर बैठा देते

six days a week

ऐसा एक सप्ताह मे 6 दिन होता

and had me writing down about my journey, my work,

और मुझेसे मेरे यात्रा, काम के बारे मे बार-बार लिखने को बोलते, जबतक मैं वो न लिख

over and over until I wrote down the confession that they wanted to hear.

दूँ जो वेलोग मुझसे सुनना चाहते थे।

After about three months of detention,

3 महीने के कैद के बाद,

the North Korean court sentenced me

उत्तर कोरिया कोर्ट ने मुझे 12 साल तक

to 12 years in a labor camp.

लेबर कैंप मे रहने की सजा सुनाई। कमरे में यूं ही

So I was just sitting in my room to be transferred.

बैठी थी स्थानांतरन के लिए।

At that time, I really had nothing else to do,

मेरे पास करने को कुछ और ना था।

so I paid attention to these two female guards

तो मैंने उन दो महिला गार्ड की बातो पर ध्यान आकर्षित किया

and listened to what they were talking about.

और सुनने लगी की वेलोग क्या बाते कर रहे थे।

Guard A was older,

गार्ड A उम्र मे बड़ी थी

and she studied English.

और अंग्रेजी सीख रखी थी।

She seemed like she came from an affluent family.

अमीर घराने की लग रही थी।

She often showed up with these colorful dresses,

वो हमेशा रंगीन कपड़ो मे नज़र आती थी,

and then loved to show off.

और दिखावा करना पसंद था।

And Guard B was the younger one,

लेकिन गार्ड B एक युवा महिला थी,

and she was a really good singer.

और एक बहुत अच्छी गायिका भी।

She loved to sing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" --

वो सेलीन डिओन का गाना “My heart will go on” को गाना पसंद करती थी

sometimes too much.

कभी कभार कुछ ज्यादा ही।

She knew just how to torture me without knowing.

वो जानती थी की मुझे कैसे प्रताड़ित करना है

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

And this girl spent a lot of time in the morning to put on makeup,

ये लड़की अपने सुबह के ज़्यादातर समय को मेकअप करने मे लगाती, जैसा की आप किसी भी

like you can see in any young girl's life.

युवा लड़की मे देख सकते हैं।

And they loved to watch this Chinese drama,

वेलोग इस चाइनिज ड्रामा को देखना पसंद करते थे,

a better quality production.

एक बेहतर क्वालिटी उत्पादन।

I remember Guard B said,

गार्ड B ने जो बोला मुझे याद हैं,

"I can no longer watch our TV shows after watching this."

“ये देखने के बाद मैं अपने यहाँ का TV शॉ नहीं देखती।”

She got scolded

अपने देश के TV शॉ की अवहेलना

for degrading her own country's produced TV shows.

करने पर उसको डाट सुननी पड़ी।

Guard B had more of a free mind than Guard A,

गार्ड B गार्ड A के मुक़ाबले खुले दिमाग की थी,

and she often got scolded by Guard A whenever she expressed herself.

और जब-जब वो अपनी इच्छा व्यक्त करती गार्ड A उसको डाट देती।

One day, they invited all these female colleagues --

एक दिन, उन्होंने इन सभी सहयोगी कर्मचारियों को निमंत्रण दिया मुझे नहीं

I don't know where they came from --

पता था कि वेलोग कहा से आ गए थे

to where I was held,

जहां मुझे रखा गया था,

and they invited me

और उन्होंने मुझे भी बुलाया

to their guard room

अपने गार्ड रूम में

and asked

और पूछे

if one-night stands really happen in the US.

क्या अमेरिका में सचमुच में लोग एक रात किसी के साथ भी गुजार लेते हैं।

(Laughter)

(हँसी)

This is the country where young couples are not even allowed

यह एक ऐसा देश हैं जहां युवा दंपति का पब्लिक में हाथ पकड़ने का

to hold hands in public.

अनुमति नहीं था।

I had no idea where they had gotten this information,

मुझे इस बात का पता नही था की वेलोग इस बात को कहा से सुने थे,

but they were shy and giggly even before I said anything.

लेकिन मेरे कुछ बोलने से पहले ही वेलोग शरमाते हुए खिलखिला रहे थे।

I think we all forgot that I was their prisoner,

हमसब ये भूल गए थे की मैं उनकी कैदी थी,

and it was like going back to my high school classroom again.

और ऐसा लगने लगा की मैं फिर से अपने हाई स्कूल में वापस आ चुकी थी।

And I learned that these girls also grew up watching a similar cartoon,

और मुझे ज्ञात हुआ कि ये लड़कियां भी हमारे जैसा ही कार्टून देखते हुए बड़ी हुई थी,

but just propaganda towards South Korea and the US.

जिसमे दक्षिण कोरिया और अमेरिका के बारे में प्रोपेगैंडा दिखाया जाता था।

I started to understand where these people's anger was coming from.

मुझे पता चलने लगा था की इनके गुस्से का कारण क्या था।

If these girls grew up learning that we are enemies,

यदि ये लड़कियां ये सीखते हुए बड़ी हो को हम इनके दुश्मन हैं,

it was just natural that they would hate us

तो यह प्राकृतिक हैं की वे हमसे नफ़रत करेंगे

just as I feared them.

जैसा कि मैं उनसे डर रही थी।

But at that moment, we were all just girls

लेकिन उस समय, हम सभी बस लड़कि थे

who shared the same interests,

जो एक जैसे बाते साझा कर रहे थे,

beyond our ideologies that separated us.

अपने विचारधारा से परे जिसके कारण से हम अलग हुए थे।

I shared these stories with my boss at Current TV at the time

मैंने इस कहानी के बारे में जहां मैं कम कर रही थी वहीं के बॉस को बताई

after I came home.

जब मैं घर वापस आई तो।

His first reaction was,

उनका पहली प्रतिक्रिया,

"Euna, have you heard of Stockholm Syndrome?"

“उना, क्या तुम स्टॉकहोम सिंड्रोम के बारे में सुनी हो?”

Yes, and I clearly remember

हाँ, और मुझे अच्छे से याद हैं

the feeling of fear

डर का महसूस होना

and being threatened,

और धमकी मिलना

and tension rising up between me and the interrogator

मेरे और मेरे से पूछताछ करने वाले के बीच में टेंशन का बढ़ जाना

when we talked about politics.

जब हम राजनीति की बात करते तो।

There definitely was a wall that we couldn't climb over.

वहां बेसक एक दीवाल थी जिसे हम पार नहीं कर सकते थे।

But we were able to see each other as human beings

लेकिन हमलोग एक दूसरे में इंसानियत भी देख रहे थे

when we talked about family,

जब हम बात करते परिवार के बारे में,

everyday life,

दिनचर्या के बारे में

the importance of the future for our children.

बच्चों के भविष्य की महत्वता के बारे में।

It was about a month before I came home.

घर आने से एक महीने पहले की बात थी।

I got really sick.

मैं बहुत ही बीमार पड़ गई।

Guard B stopped by my room to say goodbye,

गार्ड B मेरे कमरे में मुझे अलविदा कहने आई,

because she was leaving the detention center.

क्योंकि वो डिटेंशन सेंटर को छोर रही थी।

She made sure that no one watched us,

उसने सुनिश्चित किया की हमे कोई ना देख रहा हो,

no one heard us,

ना कोई सुन रहा हो,

and quietly said,

और फिर धीरे से बोली,

"I hope you get better

“मैं आशा करती हूं की तुम ठीक हो जाओ

and go back to your family soon."

और जल्द ही अपने घर को लौट जाओ.”

It is these people --

ये वेलोग हैं,

the officer who brought me his coat,

वो ऑफिसर जो मुझे एक कोट दिया था,

the guard who offered me a boiled egg,

वो गार्ड जो मुझे एक अंडा दी थी,

these female guards who asked me about dating life in the US --

और वो महिला गार्डस जो मुझसे अमेरिका में डेटिंग जीवन के बारे में पूछी थी

they are the ones that I remember of North Korea:

ये लोग वे हैं जिनके कारण मैं उत्तर कोरिया को याद करती हूं:

humans just like us.

हमारे जैसा इंसान।

North Koreans and I were not ambassadors of our countries,

उत्तर कोरिया और मैं अपने देश के राजदूत नहीं थे,

but I believe that we were representing

लेकिन मुझे विश्वास हैं की हम

the human race.

मानवता के प्रतिनिधित्व हैं।

Now I'm back home and back to my life.

अब मैं अपने घर और अपने काम पर वापस आ गई हूं।

The memory of these people has blurred as time has passed.

जैसे जैसे समय बिता इनलोगो की यादें धुंधली होती चली गई।

And I'm in this place

और मैं यहां हूं

where I read and hear about North Korea provoking the US.

जहां मैं पढ़ती और सुनती हुं को उत्तर कोरिया अमेरिका को उक्सा रहा हैं।

I realized how easy it is

मुझे प्रतीत हुआ की यह कितना आसान हैं

to see them as an enemy again.

उनको फिर से दुश्मन की नजरों से देखना।

But I have to keep reminding myself that when I was over there,

लेकिन मुझे अपने आप को याद दिलाते रहना होगा की जब मैं वहां थी तब,

I was able to see humanity

मैंने मानवता को देखा

over hatred

नफ़रत से परे

in my enemy's eyes.

अपने दुश्मनों के आंखो में।
