It was March 17, 2009.

2009년 3월 17일.

It is St. Patrick's Day for all of you,

but it was the day that turned my life upside down.

My team and I were making a documentary about North Korean refugees

저와 제 팀이 제작하고 있던 다큐는 북한 난민에 대한 것으로

living below human life in China.

그들은 중국에서 인간 이하의 삶을 살고 있었습니다.

We were at the border.

우리는 국경에 있었어요.

It was our last day of filming.

마지막 촬영 날이었지요.

There was no wire fence

철조망도 없고

or bars

차단 장치도 없고

or sign to show that it is the border,

국경이라는 그 어떤 표시도 없던 곳이었지만

but this is a place that a lot of North Korean defectors use

그곳은 바로 수많은 탈북자들이 이용하는 탈출 경로였습니다.

as an escape route.

It was still winter,

아직 겨울이었고

and the river was frozen.

강은 얼어 있었습니다.

When we were in the middle of the frozen river,

얼어붙은 강의 한 가운데로 들어가서

we were filming about the condition of the cold weather

우리는 추운 날씨의 실상을 촬영하고

and the environment

주변 환경도 담았습니다.

that North Koreans had to deal with

탈북자들은 이런 조건을 뚫고서

when they seek their freedom.

자유 세계로 탈출하는 것이죠.

And suddenly, one of my team members shouted,

그런데 갑자기 팀원 한 명이 소리쳤습니다.

"Soldiers!"

“군인이다!”

So I looked back,

뒤를 돌아보니까

and there were two small soldiers in green uniforms with rifles,

녹색 군복에 총을 든 덩치 작은 군인 두 명이

chasing after us.

우리를 쫓고 있었습니다.

We all ran as fast as we could.

우리는 있는 힘을 다해 도망쳤어요.

I prayed that, please don't let them shoot my head.

‘머리에 총을 쏘지 않게 해주세요’ 하고 기도했고

And I was thinking that,

이런 생각이 들었어요.

if my feet are on Chinese soil,

내가 중국 땅을 밟으면

I'll be safe.

안전할 것이라고.

And I made it to Chinese soil.

드디어 저는 중국 땅에 다다랐습니다.

Then I saw my colleague Laura Ling fall on her knees.

그런데 제 눈에 동료 ‘로라 링’이 무릎을 꿇고 있는 모습이 보였어요.

I didn't know what to do at that short moment,

그 짧은 순간, 어찌해야 할 지 몰랐습니다.

but I knew that I could not leave her alone there

다만 제 동료를 그곳에 혼자 두고 갈 수 없음을 알 수 있었지요.

when she said, "Euna, I can't feel my legs."

로라가 말했어요. “유나, 다리에 감각이 없어.”

In a flash, we were surrounded by these two Korean soldiers.

그 짧은 찰나에 우리는 북한군 두 명에게 포위되었습니다.

They were not much bigger than us,

그들은 우리보다 그다지 크지는 않았지만

but they were determined to take us to their army base.

우리를 군 기지로 끌고 가야 한다는 사명감 만큼은 확실해 보였지요.

I begged and yelled for any kind of help,

저는 제발 살려 달라고 소리치며 사정했습니다.

hoping that someone would show up from China.

중국 땅에서 누군가 튀어나와 주기를 바라면서

Here I was, being stubborn

그 국경에서 진퇴양난의 상태로

towards a trained soldier with a gun.

총격훈련을 받은 군인과 대치하고 있었던 거죠.

I looked at his eyes.

군인의 눈을 봤어요.

He was just a boy.

단지 소년에 불과했지요.

At that moment, he raised his rifle to hit me,

그 순간 그 군인이 총을 치켜 들고 절 치려고 했지만

but I saw that he was hesitating.

망설이고 있는 것을 봤죠.

His eyes were shaking,

그 군인의 눈빛은 흔들리고 있었고

and his rifle was still up in the air.

총은 여전히 공중에 떠 있었습니다.

So I shouted at him,

그걸 보고 전 소리쳤어요.

"OK, OK, I'll walk with you."

“그래요. 알겠어요. 따라갈게요.”

And I got up.

그리고 일어섰습니다.

When we arrived at their army base,

군 기지에 도착했을 때는

my head was spinning with these worst-case scenarios,

최악의 시나리오가 그려저 머리가 빙빙 돌았습니다.

and my colleague's statement wasn't helping.

제 동료의 말도 도움이 되지 않았어요.

She said, "We are the enemy."

“우리는 저들의 적이야” 라고 말했는데

She was right: we were the enemy.

그녀의 말이 맞았습니다. 우리는 적이었습니다.

And I was supposed to be frightened, too.

무서움에 벌벌 떨어야 맞는 거였죠.

But I kept having these odd experiences.

그런데 저는 계속해서 이상한 경험을 했습니다.

This time, an officer brought me his coat

그때 한 장교가 자신의 코트를 저에게 가져다 줬는데

to keep me warm,

절 춥지않게 해 주려는 거였죠.

because I lost my coat on the frozen river

왜냐하면 저는 그 언 강 위에서 코트를 잃어버렸거든요.

while battling with one of these soldiers.

그 군인들과 대치하는 동안에요.

I will tell you what I mean by these odd experiences.

이상한 경험이란 게 어떤 것들인지 말씀드리겠습니다.

I grew up in South Korea.

저는 남한에서 자랐습니다.

To us, North Korea was always the enemy,

저희에게 북한은 늘 적이었죠.

even before I was born.

심지어 제가 태어나기 전에도

South and North have been under armistice for 63 years,

남과 북은 63년 동안 휴전 상태에 있습니다.

since the end of the Korean War.

한국전쟁이 끝난 후에도 줄곧.

And growing up in the South in the '80s and '90s,

80년대, 90년대에 남한에서 자란 우리는

we were taught propaganda about North Korea.

북한에 대한 선전 교육을 받았습니다.

눈에 보이는 듯한 이야기들도 수없이 많이 들었죠.

And we heard so many graphic stories,

such as, a little young boy being brutally killed

예를 들면, 어린 소년이 끔찍하게 살해당한 이유가

by North Korean spies just because he said,

북한 간첩에게 이렇게 말했기 때문이라고 했어요.

"I don't like communists."

“나는 공산당이 싫어요!”

Or, I watched this cartoon series

또는 이런 만화 영화 시리즈를 봤는데

about a young South Korean boy defeating these fat, big, red pig,

어린 남한 소년이 뚱뚱하고 거대한 붉은 돼지를 물리치는 이야기였고,

which represented the North Koreans' first leader at the time.

그 돼지는 북한의 초대 지도자를 상징한 거였죠.

And the effect of hearing these horrible stories over and over

이런 끔찍한 이야기를 반복적으로 들은 결과로

instilled one word in a young mind:

어린 마음에 한 단어가 새겨 졌습니다.

"enemy."

“적”

And I think at some point, I dehumanized them,

그러다가 어느 시점에선가 전 그들을 비인간적인 존재로 여기게 되었고

and the people of North Korea became equated

북한에 있는 모든 사람들도 마찬가지일 거라고 생각하게 되었죠.

with the North Korean government.

모두 북한 정부와 다를 바 없는 사람들이라고

Now, back to my detention.

이제, 제가 갇혀있던 이야기로 돌아갑니다.

It was the second day

두 번째 날이었어요.

of being in a cell.

감방에 갇혀 있었죠.

I had not slept since I was out at the border.

국경에서 잡혀 온 다음부터 잠이 오지 않았습니다.

This young guard came to my cell

젊은 교도관이 제 감방으로 다가오더니

and offered me this small boiled egg

조그만 삶은 계란을 제게 내밀었어요.

and said, "This will give you strength to keep going."

“이게 버틸 수 있는 힘을 줄 거예요”라면서

Do you know what it is like,

이게 어떤 건지 아시겠어요?

receiving a small kindness in the enemy's hand?

작은 친절을 적의 손으로부터 건네 받는 것이요?

Whenever they were kind to me, I thought the worst case

그들이 제게 친절하게 대할 때마다 최악의 상황이

was waiting for me after the kindness.

그 친절 뒤에 기다리고 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

One officer noticed my nervousness.

한 장교는 제가 초조해 한다는 것을 알고

He said, "Did you think we were all these red pigs?"

“우리 모두가 붉은 돼지라고 생각하는 거요?”라고 말했습니다.

referring to the cartoon that I just showed you.

방금 전 보여드린 바로 만화 얘기였어요.

Every day was like a psychological battle.

매일매일 심리전을 치르는 것 같았습니다.

The interrogator had me sit at a table

심문하는 사람은 저를 탁자 앞에 앉게 하고

six days a week

일주일에 6일 동안을

and had me writing down about my journey, my work,

저의 여정과 일에 대해 쓰라고 했습니다.

over and over until I wrote down the confession that they wanted to hear.

쓰고 또 쓰고, 그들이 듣고 싶어하는 자백이 나올 때까지 반복되었죠.

After about three months of detention,

감금된 지 3개월 후에

the North Korean court sentenced me

북한 법원이 제게 선고를 내렸는데

12년 간을 노동수용소에서 보내라는 것이었습니다.

to 12 years in a labor camp.

So I was just sitting in my room to be transferred.

제 방에 앉아 이송되기를 기다리고 있었습니다.

At that time, I really had nothing else to do,

그때 전 아무 것도 할 수 없었어요.

so I paid attention to these two female guards

그래서 저는 두 명의 여성 교도관들에게 관심을 기울이고

and listened to what they were talking about.

무슨 이야기를 하는지 들어 보았습니다.

Guard A was older,

교도관 A 는 손 위였고

and she studied English.

영어를 공부했습니다.

She seemed like she came from an affluent family.

그 교도관은 가정이 넉넉한 듯 보였어요.

She often showed up with these colorful dresses,

가끔씩 이런 색깔 있는 드레스를 입고 나타나서는

and then loved to show off.

자랑하는 것을 좋아했습니다.

And Guard B was the younger one,

교도관 B는 손 아래였는데

and she was a really good singer.

노래를 아주 잘 불렀습니다.

She loved to sing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" --

셀린 디온의 "My Heart Will Go On" 부르는 걸 좋아했어요.

sometimes too much.

가끔씩은 지나칠 정도였는데

She knew just how to torture me without knowing.

자기도 모르게 저를 고문하는 법을 알고 있었던 거죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And this girl spent a lot of time in the morning to put on makeup,

그 교도관은 아침이면 화장하는데 많은 시간을 썼습니다.

like you can see in any young girl's life.

여러분께서 알고 계시는 여느 소녀들의 일상과 마찬가지였죠.

And they loved to watch this Chinese drama,

중국드라마도 즐겨 보더라고요.

a better quality production.

수준이 훨씬 높은 드라마를요.

I remember Guard B said,

교도관 B이 이렇게 말했던 게 기억납니다.

"I can no longer watch our TV shows after watching this."

“이걸 본 다음엔 다른 TV프로그램은 더 이상 못 보겠어”

She got scolded

그 말을 하고 혼이 나더라고요.

for degrading her own country's produced TV shows.

자신의 나라에서 만든 TV프로그램을 깎아 내렸기 때문이었죠.

Guard B had more of a free mind than Guard A,

교도관 B는 교도관 A보다 훨씬 자유로운 생각의 소유자였는데

and she often got scolded by Guard A whenever she expressed herself.

B가 솔직한 자기표현을 할 때면 A가 가끔 큰소리로 그녀를 혼내곤 했습니다.

One day, they invited all these female colleagues --

하루는, 그 두 교도관이 다른 모든 동료 여성 교도관들을 초대했어요.

I don't know where they came from --

그들 모두가 어디서 왔는지는 모릅니다만

to where I was held,

제가 갇혀 있던 곳으로 왔고

and they invited me

저를 초대해서

to their guard room

그들의 방으로 데려가더니

and asked

묻더라고요.

if one-night stands really happen in the US.

남녀간에 하룻밤 만남이 미국에서는 실제로 가능하냐고요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

This is the country where young couples are not even allowed

북한의 젊은 남녀에게 허락되지 않는 것

to hold hands in public.

바로 공공장소에서 손잡는 행위입니다.

I had no idea where they had gotten this information,

저는 이들이 대체 어디서 그런 정보를 얻었는지 알 수 없었는데요.

but they were shy and giggly even before I said anything.

제가 말도 하기 전에 교도관들은 부끄러워하며 킥킥거렸습니다.

I think we all forgot that I was their prisoner,

우리 모두는 제가 죄수라는 걸 잊은 것 같았고

and it was like going back to my high school classroom again.

제 고등학교 교실로 다시 돌아간 것만 같았습니다.

And I learned that these girls also grew up watching a similar cartoon,

또 하나 알게 된 것은, 이 소녀들도 비슷한 만화를 보며 자랐다는 거예요.

but just propaganda towards South Korea and the US.

단지 남한과 미국에 대한 선전물 밖에 되지 않는 그것을.

I started to understand where these people's anger was coming from.

저는 이들의 분노가 어디서 왔는지 이해되기 시작했습니다.

If these girls grew up learning that we are enemies,

만약 이 소녀들이 우리가 적이라고 배우며 자랐다면

it was just natural that they would hate us

우리를 싫어하는 것은 어쩌면 자연스러운 것이고

just as I feared them.

내가 그들을 두려워 하는 것과 마친가지인 것이죠.

But at that moment, we were all just girls

하지만 그 순간, 우리 모두는 그냥 소녀였습니다.

who shared the same interests,

같은 관심사를 나누는 그런 것이요.

beyond our ideologies that separated us.

우리를 갈라 놓은 이념 따윈 넘어선 것이었죠.

I shared these stories with my boss at Current TV at the time

저는 ‘Current TV’의 사장님께 이 이야기를 해 드렸습니다.

after I came home.

제가 집으로 돌아 온 다음에요.

His first reaction was,

사장님의 첫 반응은,

"Euna, have you heard of Stockholm Syndrome?"

“유나, 스톡홀롬 신드롬을 들어봤어?”

Yes, and I clearly remember

그래요. 저는 분명히 기억합니다.

the feeling of fear

그 공포의 감정

and being threatened,

위협감

and tension rising up between me and the interrogator

저와 심문자 사이에 고조되던 긴장감.

when we talked about politics.

우리가 정치와 관련된 말을 할 때는 그랬습니다.

There definitely was a wall that we couldn't climb over.

우리가 넘을 수 없는 벽이 분명 존재했습니다.

But we were able to see each other as human beings

하지만 우리가 서로를 같은 인간으로서 마주하던 때

when we talked about family,

가족에 대해 이야기 할 때

everyday life,

일상에 대해 이야기 할 때

the importance of the future for our children.

우리 아이들의 미래, 그 중요함에 대해 이야기 할 때였습니다.

It was about a month before I came home.

제가 집으로 돌아오기 약 한 달 전 쯤이었습니다.

I got really sick.

저는 아주 많이 아팠어요.

Guard B stopped by my room to say goodbye,

교도관 B가 제방으로 찾아와서 작별인사를 했습니다.

because she was leaving the detention center.

그녀가 그 수용소를 떠나야 했기 때문이었죠.

She made sure that no one watched us,

그 교도관은 아무도 우리를 보고 있지 않고

no one heard us,

듣고 있지 않는 걸 확인하고는

and quietly said,

작은 소리로 말했습니다.

"I hope you get better

“몸도 빨리 낫고

and go back to your family soon."

가족에게 곧 돌아갈 수 있기를 바래요.”

It is these people --

이게 바로 그들입니다.

the officer who brought me his coat,

자신의 코트를 갖다주던 장교

the guard who offered me a boiled egg,

삶은 계란을 내밀던 교도관

these female guards who asked me about dating life in the US --

미국에서의 연애방식을 묻던 여자 교도관들

they are the ones that I remember of North Korea:

그들이 바로 제가 기억하는 북한사람들입니다.

humans just like us.

그들도 우리와 같은 인간이라는 것이죠.

North Koreans and I were not ambassadors of our countries,

북한 사람들과 저는 각자의 나라의 대사는 아닙니다.

but I believe that we were representing

하지만 우리가 대표하는 것은

the human race.

바로 인류입니다.

Now I'm back home and back to my life.

현재 저는 제 집으로, 제 삶으로 돌아 와 있습니다.

The memory of these people has blurred as time has passed.

이들에 대한 기억은 시간과 함께 점점 희미해져 가고 있지요.

And I'm in this place

그리고 전 이곳에 있습니다.

where I read and hear about North Korea provoking the US.

북한이 미국을 분노케 한다고 읽게 되고, 듣게 되는 곳에.

I realized how easy it is

제가 깨달은 게 있는데요, 참 쉽다는 거예요.

to see them as an enemy again.

우리가 다시 그들을 적으로 대하는 것이죠.

But I have to keep reminding myself that when I was over there,

하지만 저는 늘 그 곳에 있었던 것을 기억할 것입니다.

I was able to see humanity

인류애를 볼 수 있었던 그 때를요.

over hatred

증오를 넘어 섰던

in my enemy's eyes.

내 적의 눈빛을...
