it's the reason that I became a documentary journalist,

a prisoner in North Korea for 140 days.

It was March 17, 2009.

2009年3月17日のことです

It is St. Patrick's Day for all of you,

皆さんにとっては 聖パトリックの祝日でしょうが

but it was the day that turned my life upside down.

その日 私の人生は 180度変わることになりました

My team and I were making a documentary about North Korean refugees

当時 私たちは 人間らしい生活すらかなわない―

living below human life in China.

中国の脱北者の姿を追い ドキュメンタリーを制作していました

We were at the border.

私たちは国境にいました

It was our last day of filming.

撮影最終日のことです

There was no wire fence

そこには鉄条網も

or bars

柵も

or sign to show that it is the border,

国境を示すものは 何もありませんでした

but this is a place that a lot of North Korean defectors use

でも そこが 多くの脱北者が使う―

as an escape route.

逃避経路だったのです

It was still winter,

まだ冬で

and the river was frozen.

川も凍っていました

When we were in the middle of the frozen river,

私たちは 凍った川の真ん中に立ち

we were filming about the condition of the cold weather

北朝鮮の人たちが 自由を手に入れるために

and the environment

どのような寒さや環境に 立ち向かわねばならないか

that North Koreans had to deal with

when they seek their freedom.

And suddenly, one of my team members shouted,

突然 取材班の１人が叫びました

"Soldiers!"

「兵士だ！」

So I looked back,

振り向くと

and there were two small soldiers in green uniforms with rifles,

緑色の制服を着てライフル銃を持った ２人の小さな兵士が

chasing after us.

追いかけてきていました

We all ran as fast as we could.

私たちは全速力で走りました

I prayed that, please don't let them shoot my head.

どうか頭を撃たないで と祈りました

And I was thinking that,

それと同時に

if my feet are on Chinese soil,

中国側の国土に 両足を踏み入れさえすれば

I'll be safe.

安全だとも考えていました

And I made it to Chinese soil.

私は なんとか中国に入りましたが

Then I saw my colleague Laura Ling fall on her knees.

同僚のローラ・リンが 膝からくずれるのを見ました

I didn't know what to do at that short moment,

一瞬 何をどうすればいいのか 分かりませんでしたが

but I knew that I could not leave her alone there

ローラの言葉を聞き 置いては行けないと思ったのです

when she said, "Euna, I can't feel my legs."

「ユナ 脚の感覚がない」 と言ったのです

In a flash, we were surrounded by these two Korean soldiers.

あっという間に 私たちは ２人の北朝鮮兵に囲まれていました

They were not much bigger than us,

北朝鮮兵の体格は 私たちと大差ありませんでしたが

but they were determined to take us to their army base.

２人は陸軍基地に 連行しようとしていました

I begged and yelled for any kind of help,

私は 何とか助けてほしいと 懇願し叫びました

hoping that someone would show up from China.

中国側から誰か 現れはしないかと期待しながら

Here I was, being stubborn

銃を持ち 訓練された兵士に対しても

towards a trained soldier with a gun.

果敢に挑む自分がいました

I looked at his eyes.

私は 兵士の目をじっと見ました

He was just a boy.

彼はまだ子どもでした

At that moment, he raised his rifle to hit me,

その瞬間 彼はライフル銃を振りかざし 私をぶとうとしました

but I saw that he was hesitating.

でも彼には ためらう様子が 見て取れました

His eyes were shaking,

目は小刻みに動き

and his rifle was still up in the air.

So I shouted at him,

"OK, OK, I'll walk with you."

「わかったわ 一緒に歩いて行くから」

And I got up.

私は立ち上がりました

When we arrived at their army base,

my head was spinning with these worst-case scenarios,

and my colleague's statement wasn't helping.

She said, "We are the enemy."

She was right: we were the enemy.

And I was supposed to be frightened, too.

そしてずっと恐怖に 震えるはずでした

But I kept having these odd experiences.

This time, an officer brought me his coat

このときは ある役人が 私が温まれるようにと 自分のコートを

to keep me warm,

差し出してくれました

because I lost my coat on the frozen river

凍った川の上で 兵士の１人ともみあっているうちに

while battling with one of these soldiers.

私がコートをなくしていたからです

I will tell you what I mean by these odd experiences.

なぜ これが奇妙なのか お話ししましょう

I grew up in South Korea.

私が育った韓国では

To us, North Korea was always the enemy,

北朝鮮はいつも敵とされてきました

even before I was born.

私が生まれる前からです

South and North have been under armistice for 63 years,

北と南は 朝鮮戦争の終結以来 63年間

since the end of the Korean War.

休戦状態にあります

And growing up in the South in the '80s and '90s,

80年代、90年代に 韓国で育った私たちは

we were taught propaganda about North Korea.

北朝鮮に対するプロパガンダを 教え込まれてきました

And we heard so many graphic stories,

生々しい話もたくさん聞きました

such as, a little young boy being brutally killed

小さな男の子が 「共産主義者は嫌いだ」と言っただけで

by North Korean spies just because he said,

北朝鮮のスパイに 無残な殺され方をしたといった風にです

"I don't like communists."

Or, I watched this cartoon series

こんなアニメ番組も見ました

about a young South Korean boy defeating these fat, big, red pig,

韓国人の男の子が 丸々と太った赤い豚を打ち負かす話です

which represented the North Koreans' first leader at the time.

この豚は 当時の北朝鮮の 初代最高指導者を表しています

And the effect of hearing these horrible stories over and over

こうした恐ろしい話を 何度も何度も聞かされて

instilled one word in a young mind:

幼い心に植え付けられた言葉が

"enemy."

「敵」なのです

And I think at some point, I dehumanized them,

いつしか私は 彼らのことを人間とは思わなくなり

and the people of North Korea became equated

北朝鮮に住む人たちを 北朝鮮政府と

with the North Korean government.

同一視するようになっていました

Now, back to my detention.

さて 拘束されたときの話に戻ります

It was the second day

あれは 独房に入れられて

of being in a cell.

２日目のことでした

I had not slept since I was out at the border.

私は 国境に出たときから 一睡もしていませんでした

This young guard came to my cell

若い看守がやって来て

and offered me this small boiled egg

小さなゆで卵を差し出して 言ったのです

and said, "This will give you strength to keep going."

「これを食べたら力がつくから」

Do you know what it is like,

どんな感じか分かりますか？

receiving a small kindness in the enemy's hand?

敵の手中にありながら ささやかな親切を受けるのです

Whenever they were kind to me, I thought the worst case

親切にされるたび 私は この優しさの後には

was waiting for me after the kindness.

最悪の事態が待っているんだ と思っていました

One officer noticed my nervousness.

私が緊張しているのに気づいた役人は こう言いました

He said, "Did you think we were all these red pigs?"

「私たちが皆 あの赤い豚のようだ と思ってるのか？」

referring to the cartoon that I just showed you.

さきほどお見せしたアニメのことを 言っているのです

Every day was like a psychological battle.

毎日 精神的な戦いを 強いられていました

The interrogator had me sit at a table

尋問官は 私を机の前に座らせ

six days a week

週６日間

and had me writing down about my journey, my work,

私の旅程や仕事について 書かせました

over and over until I wrote down the confession that they wanted to hear.

彼らがほしい証言を私が書くまで 何度も何度もです

After about three months of detention,

３か月の勾留ののち

the North Korean court sentenced me

北朝鮮の裁判所は判決を下し

to 12 years in a labor camp.

労働教化刑12年が 言い渡されました

So I was just sitting in my room to be transferred.

私は自室でただ座って 移送を待っていました

At that time, I really had nothing else to do,

そのとき 本当に 何もすることがなく

so I paid attention to these two female guards

女性看守２人のことを 注意深く見て

and listened to what they were talking about.

２人の会話を聞いていました

Guard A was older,

年上の方の看守Ａは

and she studied English.

英語を勉強していたようでした

She seemed like she came from an affluent family.

裕福な家庭の出身らしく

She often showed up with these colorful dresses,

きれいな色のワンピースを よく着てきては

and then loved to show off.

見せびらかしていました

And Guard B was the younger one,

もう１人の若い看守Ｂは

and she was a really good singer.

すごく歌がうまい子でした

She loved to sing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" --

十八番がセリーヌ・ディオンの 『マイ・ハート・ウィル・ゴー・オン』で

sometimes too much.

時々 嫌になるくらい歌うんです

She knew just how to torture me without knowing.

意図せず 私を苦しめるのが 得意でした

(Laughter)

（笑）

And this girl spent a lot of time in the morning to put on makeup,

この看守は朝 すごい時間をかけて メイクをしていました

like you can see in any young girl's life.

普通の若い女の子と同じようにです

And they loved to watch this Chinese drama,

それから２人は 番組として より質の高い―

a better quality production.

中国制作のドラマが大好きでした

I remember Guard B said,

あるとき 看守Ｂが

"I can no longer watch our TV shows after watching this."

「これを見たら 自国のテレビ番組なんて 見る気がしないわ」と言って

She got scolded

怒られていました

for degrading her own country's produced TV shows.

自国のテレビ番組を けなしてはいけないと

Guard B had more of a free mind than Guard A,

看守Ｂは 年上の看守Ａよりも もっと自由な考え方をしていて

and she often got scolded by Guard A whenever she expressed herself.

自分の考えを口に出しては よく 看守Ａに怒られていました

One day, they invited all these female colleagues --

あるとき ２人は 女性の同僚をみんな集めて―

I don't know where they came from --

一体どこから来たのか分かりませんが―

to where I was held,

私がいる勾留施設に来ました

and they invited me

私も看守の部屋に

to their guard room

呼ばれました

and asked

そして尋ねられたのが

if one-night stands really happen in the US.

「アメリカでは一夜限りの関係って 本当にあるの？」です

(Laughter)

（笑）

This is the country where young couples are not even allowed

ここは 若い男女が 公の場で手をつなぐことさえ

to hold hands in public.

許されない国です

I had no idea where they had gotten this information,

こんな情報をどこで 仕入れたのか分かりませんが

but they were shy and giggly even before I said anything.

私が何か言う前から 彼女たちは 恥ずかしそうに くすくす笑っていました

I think we all forgot that I was their prisoner,

誰もが 私が囚人だということを 忘れているようでした

and it was like going back to my high school classroom again.

私は高校時代の教室に 戻ったかのように感じました

And I learned that these girls also grew up watching a similar cartoon,

そして この子たちもまた 同じようなアニメを見て育っていました

but just propaganda towards South Korea and the US.

ただプロパガンダが韓国とアメリカに 向けられているというだけです

I started to understand where these people's anger was coming from.

ここの人々の怒りがどこから来るのか 分かってきました

If these girls grew up learning that we are enemies,

この子たちが 私たちが敵だと 教えられて育てば

it was just natural that they would hate us

私たちを嫌うようになって 当然です

just as I feared them.

私が彼らを怖がるのと 同じことです

But at that moment, we were all just girls

でも あのときだけは 私たちは ただの女の子同士

who shared the same interests,

同じ関心事について 語り合っていました

beyond our ideologies that separated us.

私たちを隔てるイデオロギーを 超越したところにいたのです

I shared these stories with my boss at Current TV at the time

帰国してから カレントTVの当時の上司に このような体験について話したところ

after I came home.

His first reaction was,

開口一番に言われたのがこれです

"Euna, have you heard of Stockholm Syndrome?"

「ストックホルム症候群って 知っているか？」

Yes, and I clearly remember

ええ 知っています それに私ははっきり覚えています

the feeling of fear

あの恐怖

and being threatened,

脅されるときの感情

and tension rising up between me and the interrogator

そして尋問者との間で高まる緊張

when we talked about politics.

話が政治に及ぶと いつも そうでした

There definitely was a wall that we couldn't climb over.

お互いに乗り越えられない壁が そこにはありました

But we were able to see each other as human beings

でも 人間同士でいられる時間も 確かにあったのです

when we talked about family,

家族のことや

everyday life,

日々の生活

the importance of the future for our children.

子どもたちの将来の大切さを 語り合うときです

It was about a month before I came home.

帰国する１か月ほど前

I got really sick.

私は ひどく体調を崩しました

Guard B stopped by my room to say goodbye,

看守Ｂが部屋に さよならを言いに来てくれました

because she was leaving the detention center.

彼女は拘置所を 去ることになったのです

She made sure that no one watched us,

彼女は 誰にも見られておらず

no one heard us,

誰も聞いていないことを確認し

and quietly said,

静かに言ったのです

"I hope you get better

「体調が良くなって

and go back to your family soon."

家族のもとにすぐ戻れると良いわね」

It is these people --

この人たち―

the officer who brought me his coat,

私にコートを差し出してくれた役人

the guard who offered me a boiled egg,

ゆで卵をくれた看守

these female guards who asked me about dating life in the US --

アメリカでの恋愛事情を 私に尋ねた女性看守たち

they are the ones that I remember of North Korea:

こういった人たちが 私が北朝鮮と聞いて思い出す人たちなんです

humans just like us.

私たちと同じような人間です

North Koreans and I were not ambassadors of our countries,

北朝鮮人や私は 各国の大使ではありませんが

but I believe that we were representing

私たちは人類を代表していたのだと

the human race.

信じています

Now I'm back home and back to my life.

今 私は家に帰り 普段の生活に戻っています

The memory of these people has blurred as time has passed.

お話しした人たちの記憶は 時間とともに薄れてきました

And I'm in this place

そして ここにいると

where I read and hear about North Korea provoking the US.

アメリカを挑発する北朝鮮について 見聞きします

I realized how easy it is

ともすれば 彼らをまた敵だと

to see them as an enemy again.

考えてしまいそうになります

But I have to keep reminding myself that when I was over there,

だから私は あの場所にいたときのことを 思い起こすのです

I was able to see humanity

あのとき 敵の目の中に 私が見たのは

over hatred

憎しみよりも

in my enemy's eyes.

人間らしさだったということを
