Being a child, and sort of crawling around the house,

لە منداڵیدا ڕاهاتبووم کە یاری بکەم لە دەوروبەری ماڵەوە

I remember these Turkish carpets,

وە ئەو فەرشە توورکیانەم لە یادە

and there were these scenes, these battle scenes, these love scenes.

کە ئەم وێنانەی لەسەر بوو،وێنەی جەنگ،وێنەی جوان بە ڕاستی

I mean, look, this animal is trying to fight back this spear

مەبەستم ئەوەیە سەیری ئەم ئاژەڵە بکە کە هەوڵ دەدات بەرگری لە تیری

from this soldier.

ئەو سەربازە بکات

And my mom took these pictures actually, last week,

وە دایکل ئەم وێنەیەی گرتووە ،هەفتەی ڕابردوو

of our carpets, and I remember this to this day.

هی فەڕشەکانمان وە تە ئەمڕۆش لە بیرمە

There was another object, this sort of towering piece of furniture

وە شتێکی تریش هەبوو،کەل و پەلی ناو ماڵ بوو،وێنەی ئەسپ و شتی تێدا بوو

with creatures and gargoyles and nudity --

کە چەند هەڵکۆڵینی تێدا بوو لەگەڵ پەیکەری ڕووت و جیرگوڵدا

pretty scary stuff, when you're a little kid.

شتی زۆر ترسناک،کاتێک کە منداڵێکی بچووک

What I remember today from this is that objects tell stories,

وە ئەوەی من بیری لێ ئەکەمەوە ئەوەیە کە ئەم شتانە چیرۆکێ دەگێڕنەوە

so storytelling has been a really strong influence in my work.

بۆیە چیرۆک گێڕانەوە کاری گەریەکی گەورەی هەبوو لەسەر کارەکانم

And then there was another influence.

وە پاشان کاری گەریەکی بەهێزترر هەیە

I was a teenager, and at 15 or 16, I guess like all teenagers,

هەرزەکار بووم ١٥ یان ١٦ ساڵان ،پێم وابێت وەک هەموو هەرزەکارەکان

we want to just do what we love and what we believe in.

And so,

I fused together the two things I loved the most,

ئەو دوو شتەم کۆ کردەوە کە زۆرم هەز لێیە

which was skiing and windsurfing.

Those are pretty good escapes from the drab weather in Switzerland.

وە ئەوانە شتێکی زۆر باش بوون وە ڕاکردن لەو جەوە ووشکەی سویسرا

So, I created this compilation of the two:

بۆیە ئەم داهێنانەم درووست کرد

I took my skis and I took a board and I put a mast foot in there,

زلاجاتەکانم بردووە کردم بە لەوحەکەوە وە شوینی قاچیشم بۆ دانان

and some foot straps, and some metal fins,

وە هەندێ شریتی جزمەو بەشی کانزای

and here I was, going really fast on frozen lakes.

وە ئەمەتام زۆر بە خێرای دەڕۆم لەسەر دەریاچە بەستووەکان

It was really a death trap. I mean, it was incredible,

بەڕاستی تەڵەی مردن بوو،مەبەستم ئەوەیە زۆر خۆش بوو

it worked incredibly well, but it was really dangerous.

زۆر بەباشی کاری دەکرد بەڵام زۆر مەترسی دار بوو

And I realized then I had to go to design school.

I mean, look at those graphics there.

So, I went to design school,

and it was the early '90s when I finished.

And I saw something extraordinary happening in Silicon Valley,

so I wanted to be there,

and I saw that the computer was coming into our homes,

that it had to change in order to be with us in our homes.

And so I got myself a job and I was working for a consultancy,

and we would get in to these meetings,

and these managers would come in,

and they would say,

"Well, what we're going to do here is really important, you know."

And they would give the projects code names, you know,

وە ناوی پڕۆژەکەیان دەنا

mostly from "Star Wars," actually: things like C3PO, Yoda, Luke.

وە زۆربەی ناوەکان وەک (جەنگی ئەستێرەکان)بوو،،،،،

So, in anticipation, I would be this young designer

لەڕاستیدا من بچوک ترین دیزاینەر بوم

in the back of the room, and I would raise my hand,

and I would ask questions.

I mean, in retrospect, probably stupid questions,

but things like, "What's this Caps Lock key for?"

or "What's this Num Lock key for?" You know, that thing?

"You know, do people really use it?

ئایا خەڵک بەڕاستی بە کاری دەهێنن

Do they need it? Do they want it in their homes?"

ئایا پێویستیان پێیەتی؟ئایا بەکاری دەهێنن لە ماڵەوە؟

What I realized then is, they didn't really want to change

وە ئەوەی دواترزانیم ئەوەبوو کە خەڵک بە ڕاستی لە گۆڕان دەترسن

the legacy stuff; they didn't want to change the insides.

وەک شتە بۆ ماواییەکان نەیان دەویست هیچ گۆڕان کاریەکی تیادا بکرێت

They were really looking for us, the designers, to create the skins,

to put some pretty stuff outside of the box.

And I didn't want to be a colorist.

It wasn't what I wanted to do.

I didn't want to be a stylist in this way.

And then I saw this quote:

"advertising is the price companies pay for being unoriginal."

So, I had to start on my own. So I moved to San Francisco,

and I started a little company, fuseproject.

وە کۆمپانیایەکی بچوکم دانا،فیوز پڕۆجێکت

And what I wanted to work on is important stuff.

وە دەموسیت کار لەسەر شتی گرینگ بکەم

And I wanted to really not just work on the skins,

وە نەمدەویست تەنها کار لەسەر ئەو شتانە بکەم کە هەیە

but I wanted to work on the entire human experience.

وە نەمدەویست سوود لە هەمو شارەزاییەکانی پێش خۆم وەربگرم

And so the first projects were sort of humble,

وە یەکەم کارەکانمان سادەییەکی پێوە دیار بوو

but they took technology and maybe made it into things

بەڵام تەکنەلۆجیامان بەکار هێنا

that people would use in a new way,

بۆ ئەوەی خەڵک بە شێوازی نوێ بەکاری بهێنێت

and maybe finding some new functionality.

ئەوەش بە دۆزینەوەی چەندە پڕۆژەیەک بوو کە کاری نوێی دەکرد

This is a watch we made for Mini Cooper, the car company,

وە ئەم سەعاتەمان دروست کرد بۆ شەریکەی سەیارەتی مینی کۆپەر

right when it launched,

وە یەک دەرچوونی بوو لە جیهانی سەیارەدا

and it's the first watch that has a display

وە ئەمە یەکەم سەعاتە کە

that switches from horizontal to vertical.

وێنەکان بە ئاسۆیو ستوونی پیشان دەدات

And that allows me to check my timer discretely, here,

دەتوانی بە ئاسانی کاتەکە ببینیت

without bending my elbow.

بێ ئەوەی ئەنیشکم بنوشتێنمەوە

And other projects, which were really about transformation,

پڕۆژەیەکی تر لە بواری تازەگەری و گۆڕان دا

about matching the human need.

This is a little piece of furniture for an Italian manufacturer,

and it ships completely flat,

and then it folds into a coffee table and a stool and whatnot.

And something a little bit more experimental:

this is a light fixture for Swarovski,

and what it does is, it changes shape.

So, it goes from a circle, to a round, to a square, to a figure eight.

And just by drawing on a little computer tablet,

the entire light fixture adjusts to what shape you want.

And then finally, the leaf lamp for Herman Miller.

وە ئەوەی لێرەدایە پێی دەوترێت گڵۆپە کانزاییەکانی هێرمان میلەر

This is a pretty involved process;

ئەمە ئەنجامی کارێکی بە کۆمەڵ بوو

it took us about four and a half years.

ماوەی چوار ساڵ و نیوی پێچو

But I really was looking for creating a unique experience of light,

a new experience of light.

So, we had to design both the light and the light bulb.

And that's a unique opportunity, I would say, in design.

And the new experience I was looking for

is giving the choice for the user to go from

a warm, sort of glowing kind of mood light,

all the way to a bright work light.

یان گڵۆپئکی بەهێز

So, the light bulb actually does that.

وە ئەمەش کاری ئیشارەتی گڵپۆپەکەیە

It allows the person to switch,

وەئەمەش ڕێ دەدات بە بەکارهێنەر لە ئازادی ئیش پێکردنی

and to mix these two colorations.

هەردوو جۆری ڕوناکیەکەدا

And it's done in a very simple way:

وە زۆر بە شێوازێکی ئاسان دەکرێت

one just touches the base of the light,

ئەو کەسە تەنها دەست دەدات لە سووچی گڵۆپەکە

and on one side, you can mix the brightness,

لە لایەکەوە دەتوانی تێشکەکان تێکەڵ بکەیت

and on the other, the coloration of the light.

وە لە لایەکی ترەوە تێکەڵ کردنی ڕوناکی ئەکەی جڵەو بکەی

So, all of these projects have a humanistic sense to them,

وە هەموو ئەم پڕۆژانە داخوازیەکان فەراهەم دەکات

and I think as designers we need to really think

وە بە بڕوای من واک دیزاینەرێ پێویستە بە ڕاستی بیر بکەینەوە

about how we can create a different relationship

دەربارەی کە چۆن دەتوانین پەیاندی جیاواز دروست بکەین

between our work and the world,

لە نێوان کارەکانمان و جیهانی دەرەوە

whether it's for business,

چ بۆ مەبەستی بازرگانی بێت

or, as I'm going to show, on some civic-type projects.

Because I think everybody agrees that as designers we bring

لەبەر ئەوە بە بڕوای من هەموو کەسەکان کۆکن لەسەر ئەوەی کە دیزاینەرەکان

value to business, value to the users also,

بەهای کار کۆدەکەنەوە لەگەڵ سەد مەندی بۆ بەکارهێنەر

but I think it's the values that we put into these projects

بەڵام من بڕوام وایە ئەو گرینگیانەی ئێمە بەم پڕۆژەیەی دەدەین

that ultimately create the greater value.

کەلە کۆتایدا بەهایەکی بەرزتر بەرهەم دێنێت

And the values we bring

وە ئەو بەهایانەی کە ئێمە دەیهێنین

can be about environmental issues,

لەوانەیە سەبارەت بە کێشەیەکی ژینگەی بێت

about sustainability, about lower power consumption.

وە بەردەوامی،گرنگی نزمکردنەوەی بڕی بەکارهێنانی وزە

You know, they can be about function and beauty;

وە بۆ بە شێوەیەکی یەکسان بۆ بەدەست هێنانی ئەو ئامانجەیە کە ئومێد دەکەین بیگەینێ

they can be about business strategy.

لەوانەیە لە بارەی ستراتیجیەتێکی کاربێت

But designers are really the glue

بەڵام دیزاینەرەکانی بازنەی بەیەک گەیاندن

that brings these things together.

کە ئام بیرۆکانە بە یەکەوە دەبەستنەوە

So Jawbone is a project that you're familiar with,

جاوبۆن پڕۆژەیەکە کە ئێوە ئاشنان لەگەڵیدا

and it has a humanistic technology.

تەکنەلۆجیای باری مرۆڤایەتیە

It feels your skin. It rests on your skin,

ئەم سەماعەیە بەر پێستی ئەو مرۆڤە دەکەوێت

and it knows when it is you're talking.

دەری دەخات کە ئەو کەسە قسە دەکات

And by knowing when it is you're talking,

وە هەڵدەستێت بە جیا کردنەوەی قسەی ئەو کەسە

it gets rid of the other noises that it knows about,

لەو دەنگانەی تری دەورو بەری

which is the environmental noises.

وە هەروەها لەو دەنگە دەنگەی لە دەوری ئەو کەسەیە

But the other thing that is humanistic about Jawbone

بەڵام ئەو شتەی کە زۆر سیفەتی جاوبۆنە

is that we really decided to take out all the techie stuff,

ئەوەیە کە ئێمە بڕیارمان دا لایەنی تەکنیکی بخەینە لاوە

and all the nerdy stuff out of it,

وە هەموو شتە بێزارکەرەکانیشی لێ دەربکەین

and try to make it as beautiful as we can.

وە هەوڵماندا هەتا بتوانین بە جوانی دایبڕێژین

I mean, think about it:

مەبەستم ئەوەیە :بیری لێ بکەینەوە

the care we take in selecting sunglasses, or jewelry,

ئەو بە هایەی دەیدەین بە عەینەکێک یان پارچەیەک ئاڵتوون

or accessories is really important,

یان متو موورویەک بە ڕاستی گرینگە

so if it isn't beautiful, it really doesn't belong on your face.

بۆیە ئەگەر زۆر جوان نەبێت ناگونجێت لەگەڵ دەم و چاوتدا

And this is what we're pursuing here.

وە دەمانەوێت ئەمە ڕوون بکەینەوە

But how we work on Jawbone is really unique.

ئەو شێوازەی جاوبۆن کاری پێدەکات زۆر دەگمەنە

I want to point at something here, on the left.

ئەمەوێت ئیشارەت بە شتێک بکەم لێرەدا،لەلای چەپ

This is the board, this is one of the things that goes inside

ئەمە تەختەی وێنە کێشانە،وە یەکێکە لەو بەشانەی لە ناووەوە دادەنرێت

that makes this technology work.

وە وا دەکات ئەم تەکنەلۆجیایە کاربکات

But this is the design process:

وە لێرەدا دەبینیت کاری دیزاینکردنەکە چۆنە

there's somebody changing the board,

کەسێک وێنەی تەختە کێشانەکە دەگۆڕێت

putting tracers on the board, changing the location of the ICs,

وە چەند گۆڕان کاریەک لە تەختەکەدا دەکات

as the designers on the other side are doing the work.

وە دیزاینەرەکانی تر لەولاوە کارەکان تەواو دەکەن

So, it's not about slapping skins, anymore, on a technology.

مەبەست ئەوەیە لەمەولا دەرنەچین لە بارەی کە تێیدا بووین

It's really about designing from the inside out.

دیزاین کردن بە شێوەیەکی جیاواز و نوێ

And then, on the other side of the room,

پاشان لەو لایەنی تری ژورەکەوە

the designers are making small adjustments,

دیزاینەرەکان خەریکی هەندێ چاک ازین

sketching, drawing by hand, putting it in the computer.

یەکەم جار وێنەکە بە دەست دەکێشن پاشان دەیکەنە ناو کۆمپیوتەرەوە

And it's what I call being design driven.

وە بەمەش دەوترێت وێنە کێشانی ئازاد

You know, there is some push and pull,

بە واتایەکی تر ئەوە تەنها هەوڵدانێکی سەرەتاییە

but design is really helping define

بەڵام دیزاین بە ڕاستی یارمەتی پێناسە کردنی

the whole experience from the inside out.

هەموو ئەزموونەکە لە ناوەوە بۆ دەرەوە

And then, of course, design is never done.

وە یەو کاتە دیزاینەکە نوێ دەبێت بە شێوەیەکی نوێ و دەگمەن

And this is -- the other new way that is unique

وە ئەمە ڕێگەیەکی نوێیە کە دەگمەنە

in how we work is, because it's never done,

ئێمە هەووڵی زۆر دەدەین بۆ ئەوەی کارەکانمان نوێو دەگمەن بێت

you have to do all this other stuff.

وە دوای ئەوە کارەکانی تر جێبەجێ دەکەین

The packaging, and the website, and you need to continue

پیاچونەوەو پڕو پاگەندەکان،وە پێویست دەکات

to really touch the user, in many ways.

سەرنجی خەڵک ڕابکێشێ بە زۆر ڕێگەی جیاواز

But how do you retain somebody, when it's never done?

بەڵام چۆن چاکێتی و جۆری ئەم داهێنانە بپارێزین لە لاسای کردنەوە؟

And Hosain Rahman, the CEO of Aliph Jawbone,

وە هسێن ڕەحمان بەڕێوە بەری جێبەجێ کردنی جاوبۆن ە

you know, really understands that you need a different structure.

دان بەوەدا دەنێت کە پێویستیەکی زۆرمان هەیە نەخشەی جێبەجێ کردنی جیاواز

So, in a way, the different structure is that we're partners,

وە ئەم نەخشەیە وا دادەنێت کە ئێمە هاوبەش و هاوکارین

it's a partnership. We can continue to work

لە سێبەری ئەم هاوبەشیەدا بەردەوام بین لەسەر کار

and dedicate ourselves to this project,

وە خۆمان تەرخان بکەین بۆ ئەم پڕۆژەیە

and then we also share in the rewards.

وە لەسەر کەوتنیشدا هاوبەش دەبین

And here's another project, another partnership-type approach.

وە ئەمە پڕۆەیەکی ترە جۆرێکی تری هاوبەشی کردنە

This is called Y Water,

ئەمە پێی دەوترێت وای ۆتەر

and it's this guy from Los Angeles, Thomas Arndt,

وە کابرایەک هەیە لە لۆس ئانجلوس "تۆماس ئارندت"

Austrian originally, who came to us,

خەڵکی نەمسایە،هات بۆلامان

and all he wanted to do was to create a healthy drink,

وە داوای درووست کردنی خواردنەوەیەکی تەندرووستی لێ کردین

or an organic drink for his kids,

یان خواردنەوەیەکی سروشتی تەندروستی بۆ منداڵەکانی

to replace the high-sugar-content sodas

هەتا جێگیریەک بێت بۆ ئەو شەربەتانەی ڕێژەی شەکریان زۆرە

that he's trying to get them away from.

کە ئەیوست منداڵەکانی دوور بخاتەوە لێیان

So, we worked on this bottle,

بۆیە ئەم قتووەمان بۆ درووست کرد

and it's completely symmetrical in every dimension.

وە بە تەواوی لە هەموو لایەکەوە لە شێوەدا لە یەک دەچێت

And this allows the bottle to turn into a game.

وە ئەمەش وا لە دەبەکە دەکات لە یاریەک بچێت

The bottles connect together,

وە دەتوانین لە دەبەیەک زیاتر کۆ بکەینەوە

and you can create different shapes, different forms.

هەتا بتوانی شێوەی جیاوازی لێ دروستت بکەی

And then while we were doing this,

پاشان کاتێک ئەوەمان دەکرد

the shape of the bottle upside down reminded us of a Y,

شیوەی دەبەکە بە سەرەو خواری لە پیتی وای دەچێت

and then we thought, well these words, "why" and "why not,"

وە دواتر ،بیرمان کردەوە،کە واتاکەی (بۆچی)وە(بۆنا)

are probably the most important words that kids ask.

وە ئەمە باوترین پرسیارە کەمنداڵان دەیکەن

So we called it Y Water. And so this is

وە ناومان نا وای ۆتەر

another place where it all comes together in the same room:

وە جارێکیان کە هەمووان لە ژورێکدا بووین

the three-dimensional design, the ideas, the branding,

بڕیارمان دا کە شێوە سێیەکە ی بیرۆکەی سەرەکی بەرهەممەکە بێت

it all becomes deeply connected.

وە بە شێوەیەکی تەواو پێکەوە دەبەسترێت

And then the other thing about this project is,

شتێکی تر دەربارەی ئەم پڕۆژەیە

we bring intellectual property,

کاتێک بیرۆکەکەمان بۆ هات

we bring a marketing approach,

ڕێچکەی بازاڕ گەریمان گرتە بەر

we bring all this stuff, but I think, at the end of the day,

زۆر کارمان ئەنجام دا وە لە کۆتایدا زانیمان

what we bring is these values,

ئەوەی پێشکەشی دەکەین سوودی نرخە بۆ بەکارهێنەر

and these values create a soul for the companies we work with.

وە ئەم نرخانە بەهایەک بۆ ئەو کۆمپانیایانە دروست دەکەن کە کاری لەگەڵ دەکەن

And it's especially rewarding when your design work

وە ئەوە بەڕاستی بەسەر کەوتن دادەنێت دیزاین کردنی کارێکت

becomes a creative endeavor,

دەبێت بە داهێنانێکی سەرنج ڕاکێش

when others can be creative and do more with it.

لە کاتێکدا کەسانی تر سوود لەو داهێنانە وەرداگرن

Here's another project,

ئەمە پڕۆژەیەکی ترە

which I think really emulates that.

بەبڕوای من باسی داهێنان دەکات

This is the One Laptop per Child, the $100 laptop.

ئەمە لاپتۆپێکە بۆ منداڵ بە نرخی ١٠٠دۆلار

This picture is incredible.

ئەم وێنەە بە ڕاستی سەر سەڕ هێنەرە

In Nigeria, people carry their most precious belongings on their heads.

لە نایجیریا خەڵک بەبەها ترین شتەکانیان لەسەر سەریان هەڵدەگرن

I mean, to me, it just means so much.

But when Nicholas Negroponte --

and he has spoken about this project a lot,

وە زۆر باسی لەسەر ئەم پڕۆژەیە کردووە

he's the founder of OLPC -- came to us

ئەو دامەزرێنەری "ۆر ۆێڵ پی سی"یە...هات بۆلامان

about two and a half years ago,

دوو ساڵ و نیو لەمەو بەر

there were some clear ideas.

هەندێ بیرۆکەی ئاشکرای هەبوو

He wanted to bring education and he wanted to bring technology,

ئەو دەیویست زانست بەکار بهێنێت تەکنەلۆجیا بڵاو بکاتەوە

and those are pillars of his life,

وە ئەمانە ئەرکەکانی ژیانی بوون

but also pillars of the mission of One Laptop per Child.

وە هەروەها بنەمای ئەرکەکانی بۆ هەر منداڵێک لاپتۆپێک

But the third pillar that he talked about was design.

وە سێیەم ئەرکی کە باسی لێ کرد دیزاین کردنی ئەم کۆمپیوتەرە بوو

And at the time, I wasn't really working on computers.

وە لەو کاتەدا من کارم لەسەر کۆمپیوتەر نەدەکرد

I didn't really want to, from the previous adventure.

لەبەر ئەوە نەمویست بچمە ئەم پڕۆژەیەوە

But what he said was really significant,

بەڵام ئەوەی کە وتی بە ڕاستی جێگەی سەر سوڕمان بوو

is that design was going to be why the kids

لەسەر دیزاینی ئەوە بوو کە بۆچی مناڵان بە شێوەیەکی تایبەت

were going to love this product,

حەزیان لەم بەرهەمە دەبێت

how we were going to make it low cost, robust.

چۆن تێچونەکەی کەم بکەنەوە بەڵام چاکی چاکی و جۆریەتیەکەی هەر بیمە بکەین

And plus, he said he was going to get rid of the Caps Lock key --

وە هەروەها وتی کە دووگمەی کەپس لووک لادەبات

and the Num Lock key, too.

So, I was convinced. We designed it to be iconic,

بۆیە بڕوام بە بیرۆکەکە هێنا ،دیزاینمان کرد بۆ ئەوەی لە شێوەی وێنەو ئایکۆندا بێت

to look different. To look like it's for a kid, but not like a toy.

بۆ ئەوەی جیاواز بێت ،بۆئەوەی دیاربێت بۆ منداڵان ،بەڵام وەک یاریاک نەبێت

And then the integration of

وە پاشان کۆ کردنەوەی

all these great technologies, which you've heard about,

ئەو هەموو تەکنەلۆجیە چاکانە،کە تا ئێستا گوێ بیستی بوویت

the Wi-Fi antennas that allow the kids to connect;

وەک ئامێری وای فای کە ڕێ دەدات منداڵان پەیوەندی بکەن بە ئینتەر نێت

the screen, which you can read in sunlight;

وە ئەو شاشەیەی کە دەتوانی بە ئاسانی بە ئاشکرا بیخوێنیتەوە

the keyboard, which is made out of rubber,

وە تەختەی کلیلەکان ،کە لە لاسیک دروست کراوە

and it's protected from the environment.

وە ئەو بنەما بەهێزەی بەرهەمەکە دەپارێزێ

You know, all these great technologies really happened

توانیمان هەموو ئەم تەکنەلۆجیایانە بەیەکەوە ببەستینەوە

because of the passion and

وە پاڵنەرەکان ویستی خۆمان بوو بۆ داهێنان

the OLPC people and the engineers.

کارماندانی کارگەکەو ئەندازیارەکانی

They fought the suppliers,

بەرهەڵستی (ممولین)خاوەن پارە

they fought the manufacturers.

خاوەن کارگەکانیان دەکرد

I mean, they fought like animals

زۆر بە سووری و پێداگرانە

for this to remain they way it is.

بۆ ئەوەی ئەوە ۆەک خۆی بمێنێتەوە

And in a way, it is that will that makes projects like this one --

وە بەڕێگەیەک کە بەکارهێنەرەکان عەزیان لەم بەرهەمە بێت

allows the process

وە پاراستنی کارەکە

from not destroying the original idea.

بۆ ئەوەی بیرۆکە سەرەتاییەکە بمێنێتەوە

And I think this is something really important.

So, now you get these pictures --

you get up in the morning, and you see the kids in Nigeria

And we went away from obviously the beige.

I mean it's colorful, it's fun.

In fact, you can see each logo is a little bit different.

It's because we were able

to run, during the manufacturing process,

لە کاتی پڕۆسەی درووست کردنیدا

20 colors for the X and the O,

which is the name of the computer,

and by mixing them on the manufacturing floor,

So, the lessons from seeing the kids

using them in the developing world are incredible.

But this is my nephew, Anthony, in Switzerland,

and he had the laptop for an afternoon,

and I had to take it back. It was hard.

Some of you might have heard about the New York City condom.

هەندێکتان کۆندۆمەکەی شاری نیۆرکتان بەر گوێ کەوتووە

It's actually just launched, actually launched on Valentine's Day,

کەلەم دواییەدا خرایە بازاڕەوە لە ڕۆژی ڤالانتایندا

February 14, about 10 days ago.

So, the Department of Health in New York came to us,

and they needed a way to distribute

36 million condoms for free to the citizens of New York.

So a pretty big endeavor, and we worked on the dispensers.

These are the dispensers. There's this friendly shape.

It's a little bit like designing a fire hydrant,

تاڕادەیەکی کەم شێوەیەکی شەش پاڵوی هەیە

and it has to be easily serviceable:

you have to know where it is and what it does.

And we also designed the condoms themselves.

And I was just in New York at the launch,

وە خۆم لە نیۆرک بووم کاتێک خرایە بازاڕەوە

and I went to see all these places where they're installed:

چووم بۆ هەموو ئەو بینایانەی کە تیایدا دابەش کرا

this is at a Puerto Rican little mom-and-pop store;

at a bar in Christopher Street; at a pool hall.

لەیانەیەکی شەقامی کریستۆڤەر ،لەهۆڵی مەلەوانگەدا دابەش کرا

I mean, they're being installed in homeless clinics -- everywhere.

Of course, clubs and discos, too.

you know, really into getting them. They were excited.

It was breaking the ice,

it was getting over a stigma,

and I think that's also what design can do.

throw some condoms in the room and whatnot,

I think we can change the work that we do.

We can change these values, can change the companies we work with,

and eventually, together, maybe we can change the world.
