And they're trying ours now.

.وه‌ ئێستا ئێمه‌ هه‌وڵ ده‌ده‌ن

This is a fateful moment in the history of the West.

ساتێكی یه‌كلاكه‌ره‌وه‌یه‌ .له‌ مێژوی ڕۆژئاوا دا

We've seen divisive elections and divided societies.

ئێمه‌ كۆمه‌ڵگای په‌رته‌وازه‌ و .هه‌ڵبژاردنی پڕ ئاژاوه‌مان بینیوه‌

We've seen a growth of extremism

وه‌ گه‌شه‌سه‌ندنی توندڕه‌ویمان بینیووه‌

in politics and religion,

،له‌ سیاسه‌ت و ئاین دا

all of it fueled by anxiety, uncertainty and fear,

ئه‌مانه‌ هه‌مووی جؤش دراون به‌ ،دڵه‌ڕاوكێی و ترس

of a world that's changing almost faster than we can bear,

له‌ جیهانێك كه‌ خێراتر له‌وه‌ی ئێمه‌ .ڕه‌چاوی ده‌كه‌ین ده‌گۆڕێ

and the sure knowledge that it's going to change faster still.

به‌دڵنیایه‌وه‌ زانیاریشمان خێراتر ده‌گۆڕێ

I have a friend in Washington.

هاوڕێیه‌كم هه‌یه‌ له‌ واشنتۆن

I asked him, what was it like being in America

پرسیارم لێكرد چۆنه‌ له‌ ئه‌مه‌ریكا بیت

during the recent presidential election?

له‌ ماوه‌ی ئه‌م هه‌ڵبژاردنی سه‌رۆكایه‌تیه‌ی دوای؟

He said to me, "Well,

پێمی گووت باشه‌"

it was like the man

وه‌كو پیاوێك وایه‌

sitting on the deck of the Titanic

دانشتبێت له‌سه‌ر كه‌شتی تایتانیك

with a glass of whiskey in his hand

به‌ په‌رداخێك ویسكیه‌وه‌ له‌ ده‌ستی

and he's saying, 'I know I asked for ice --

پاشان ده‌ڵێ 'ده‌زانم داوای به‌فرم كرد'

but this is ridiculous.'"

'"به‌ڵام ئه‌مه‌ زۆر بێمانایه‌

So is there something we can do,

،هیچ شتێك هه‌یه‌ بتوانین بیكه‌ین

each of us,

،هه‌ریه‌ك له‌ ئێمه‌

to be able to face the future without fear?

بتوانێ ڕووبه‌ڕوی داهاتوو ببێته‌وه‌ به‌بێ ترس؟

I think there is.

.پێم وایه‌ هه‌یه‌

And one way into it is to see

وه‌ ئه‌م ڕێگایه‌ی ده‌توانین لێوه‌ ببینین

that perhaps the most simple way into a culture and into an age

ڕه‌نگه‌ ساده‌ترین ڕێگا بێت له‌ كه‌لتور و سه‌رده‌م دا

is to ask: What do people worship?

ئه‌وه‌ی پرسیار بكه‌ی خه‌ڵك چی ده‌په‌رستن؟

People have worshipped so many different things --

--خه‌ڵك شتی زۆر جیاوازیان په‌رستیه‌

the sun, the stars, the storm.

.وه‌كو ڕۆژ و ئه‌ستێره‌ و گه‌رده‌لول

Some people worship many gods, some one, some none.

هه‌ندێ خه‌ڵك چه‌ند خواوه‌ندێك ده‌په‌رستن .هه‌یه‌ یه‌ك خودا، هه‌شه‌ هیچ

In the 19th and 20th centuries,

،له‌ سه‌ده‌ی 19 و 20

people worshipped the nation,

،خه‌ڵك نه‌ته‌وه‌یان ده‌په‌رست

the Aryan race, the communist state.

.ڕه‌گه‌زی ئاری، ده‌وڵه‌تی كۆمۆنستی

What do we worship?

ئێمه‌ چی ده‌په‌رستین؟

I think future anthropologists

پێم وایه‌ مرۆڤناسه‌كانی داهاتوو

will take a look at the books we read

سه‌یری كتێبه‌كان ده‌كه‌ن كه‌ خوێندومانه‌ته‌وه‌

on self-help, self-realization,

،له‌سه‌ر خۆیارمه‌تی دان، خۆ ڕاستاندن

self-esteem.

.ڕێز له‌ خۆگرتن

They'll look at the way we talk about morality

سه‌یری ئه‌و ڕێگایه‌ ده‌كه‌ن كه‌ باس له‌ ئاكارمان ده‌كه‌ن

as being true to oneself,

،وه‌كو كه‌سێكی ڕاستگۆ

the way we talk about politics

به‌و شێوه‌یه‌ی باسی سیاسه‌ت ده‌كه‌ین

as a matter of individual rights,

وه‌كو بابه‌تێك په‌یوه‌ندی به‌ ،مافی تاك هه‌بێت

and they'll look at this wonderful new religious ritual we have created.

وه‌ سه‌یری ده‌كه‌ن وه‌كو .نه‌ریتێكی ئاینی نوێ كه‌ دروستمان كردووه‌

You know the one?

ده‌زانی ئه‌و شته‌ی؟

Called the "selfie."

."پێی ده‌ڵێن "سێڵفی

And I think they'll conclude that what we worship in our time

پێم وایه‌ گه‌یشتونه‌ته‌ ده‌رئه‌نجامێك ئه‌وه‌ ئێمه‌ په‌رستوومانه‌ له‌كاتی خۆی

is the self, the me, the I.

.ئه‌وا خود و من بووم

And this is great.

.ئه‌مه‌ زۆر گرنگه‌

It's liberating. It's empowering. It's wonderful.

ئه‌مه‌ ڕزگارمان ده‌كات .توانامان پێده‌به‌خشێت. نایابه‌

But don't forget that biologically, we're social animals.

به‌ڵام له‌بیری نه‌كه‌ی له‌ڕوی بایلۆژیه‌وه‌ .ئێمه‌ ئاژه‌ڵێكی كۆمه‌ڵایه‌تین

We've spent most of our evolutionary history

زۆربه‌ی گه‌شه‌كردنی مێژوومان به‌ڕێ كردووه‌

in small groups.

We need those face-to-face interactions

ئێمه‌ پێویستمان به‌ كارلێكردنی ڕووبه‌ڕوو هه‌یه‌

where we learn the choreography of altruism

and where we create those spiritual goods

هه‌ر له‌وێش شته‌ ڕۆحیه‌كان دروست ده‌بن

like friendship and trust and loyalty and love

وه‌كو هاوڕێیه‌تی و متمانه‌

that redeem our solitude.

.كه‌ له‌ ته‌نیای ڕزگارمان ده‌كات

When we have too much of the "I" and too little of the "we,"

كاتێ زۆر 'من' هه‌یه‌ وه‌ زۆر كه‌م 'ئێمه‌' هه‌یه‌

we can find ourselves vulnerable,

،خۆمان بێده‌سه‌ڵات ده‌بینین

fearful and alone.

It was no accident that Sherry Turkle of MIT

ئه‌مه‌ ڕێكه‌وت نیه‌ كه‌ شێری تێركڵ له‌ ئێم.ئای.تی

called the book she wrote on the impact of social media

ئه‌و كتێبه‌ی كه‌ كاریگه‌ری هه‌بووله‌سه‌ر سۆشیاڵ میدیا ناونا

"Alone Together."

So I think the simplest way of safeguarding the future "you"

ئه‌مه‌ ئاسانترین ڕێگایه‌ بۆ پاراستنی "توی داهاتو"

is to strengthen the future "us"

"ئێمەی داهاتو" بەهێز دەکات

in three dimensions:

:له‌ سێ ڕه‌هه‌نده‌وه‌

the us of relationship,

،په‌یوه‌ندی ئێمه‌

the us of identity

شوناسی ئێمه‌

and the us of responsibility.

وە .به‌رپرسیاریه‌تی ئێمه‌

So let me first take the us of relationship.

.با یه‌كه‌م جار په‌یوه‌ندی ئێمه‌ وه‌رگرین

And here, forgive me if I get personal.

وه‌ لێره‌ بمبه‌خشن .ئه‌گه‌ر بیكه‌مه‌ بابه‌تێكی كه‌سی

Once upon a time,

،جارێك له‌ جاران

a very long time ago,

،ماوه‌یه‌كی زۆر پێش ئێستا

I was a 20-year-old undergraduate

ته‌مه‌نم بیست ساڵ بوو و خوێندكاری زانكۆ بووم

studying philosophy.

.فه‌لسه‌فه‌م ده‌خوێند

I was into Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and Sartre and Camus.

I was full of ontological uncertainty

and existential angst.

a girl

who was everything that I wasn't.

She radiated sunshine.

She emanated joy.

I found out her name was Elaine.

We met. We talked.

We married.

And 47 years, three children and eight grandchildren later,

،وه‌ 47 ساڵ، سێ منداڵ و دواتر هه‌شت نه‌وه‌

I can safely say

بێ ترس ده‌توانم بڵێم

it was the best decision I ever took in my life,

،باشترین بڕیار بوو له‌ ژیانمدا

because it's the people not like us

چونكه‌ ئه‌وه‌ خه‌ڵكه‌ نه‌ك ئێمه‌

that make us grow.

And that is why I think

we have to do just that.

The trouble with Google filters,

،كێشه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ فلته‌ره‌كانی گوگڵ

Facebook friends

هاوڕێكانی فه‌یسبوك

and reading the news by narrowcasting rather than broadcasting

خوێندنه‌وه‌ی هه‌واڵه‌كان به‌په‌خشی تایبه‌ت زیاتر له‌ په‌خشی گشتی

means that we're surrounded almost entirely by people like us

مانای وایه‌ ده‌وره‌دراوین به‌ ته‌واوی به‌ خه‌ڵكی وه‌كو خۆمان

whose views, whose opinions, whose prejudices, even,

كه‌ بیروبۆچونیان، تێڕوانین و لایه‌نگیریان ،یه‌ك ڕه‌نگیان

are just like ours.

.رێك وه‌كو خۆمانه‌

And Cass Sunstein of Harvard has shown

كاس سنستێن له‌ هارڤه‌رد پێشانی داوه‌

that if we surround ourselves with people with the same views as us,

گه‌ر ده‌وره‌دراین به‌ ،كه‌سی وه‌ك خۆمان

.توندڕه‌وتر ده‌بین

we get more extreme.

I think we need to renew those face-to-face encounters

پێموایه‌ پێویسته‌ په‌یوه‌ندیه‌ ڕوبه‌روه‌كان

نوێ بكه‌ینه‌وه‌ له‌گه‌ڵ .ئه‌و كه‌سانه‌ی حه‌زمان پێیان نیه‌

with the people not like us.

I think we need to do that

پێویسته‌ وا بكه‌ین

in order to realize that we can disagree strongly

بۆئه‌وه‌ی درك بكه‌ین كه‌ ده‌توانین ناڕازی بین

and yet still stay friends.

.وه‌هه‌ربه‌ هاوڕێش بمێننه‌وه‌

It's in those face-to-face encounters

له‌و ڕوبه‌ڕوو بونه‌وانه‌وه‌

that we discover that the people not like us

هه‌ست به‌وه‌ ده‌كه‌یت ئه‌وانه‌ی وه‌ك تۆنین

are just people, like us.

.كه‌سانی وه‌كو ئێمه‌ن

And actually, every time

وه‌ به‌ڕاستیش هه‌موو كاتێ

we hold out the hand of friendship

ئێمه‌ مه‌ودای براده‌رایه‌تی زیاترده‌كه‌ین

to somebody not like us,

،له‌گه‌ڵ كه‌سێ وه‌كو ئێمه‌ نیه‌

whose class or creed or color are different from ours,

كه‌ بنچه‌، ڕێبازوڕه‌نگی جیاوازه‌ ،له‌ ئێمه‌

we heal

چاره‌سه‌ری

one of the fractures

یه‌كێك له‌ شكانه‌كانمان ده‌كه‌ن

of our wounded world.

.له‌ جیهانه‌ برینداره‌كه‌مان

That is the us of relationship.

.ئه‌وه‌ په‌یوه‌ندی ئێمه‌یه‌

Second is the us of identity.

.دووه‌میان شوناسی ئێمه‌یه‌

Let me give you a thought experiment.

.با تاقیكردنه‌وه‌یه‌كی بیریارانه‌ت پێبڵێم

Have you been to Washington? Have you seen the memorials?

هه‌رگیز چووی بۆ واشنتۆن؟ میمۆڕیاڵه‌كت بینیوه‌؟

Absolutely fascinating.

.به‌راستی سه‌رنج ڕاكێشه‌

There's the Lincoln Memorial:

:له‌وێ میمۆڕیاڵی لینكۆڵن هه‌یه‌

Gettysburg Address on one side, Second Inaugural on the other.

گێتسبێرگ ئه‌درێس له‌لایه‌ك .سێكه‌ند ئینئۆگویره‌ڵ له‌لایه‌كی تر

You go to the Jefferson Memorial,

Martin Luther King Memorial,

more than a dozen quotes from his speeches.

I didn't realize, in America you read memorials.

،من نه‌مزانی بوو .له‌ ئه‌مه‌ریكا میمۆریاڵ ده‌خوێنیته‌وه‌

Now go to the equivalent in London in Parliament Square

ئێستا بڕۆ هه‌مان شوێن له‌ له‌نده‌ن له‌ چواڕیانی په‌ڕله‌مان

and you will see that the monument to David Lloyd George

له‌وێ مۆنۆمێنتی ده‌یڤد لۆید جۆرج ده‌بینیت

contains three words:

:له‌ سێ وشه‌ پێكهاتووه‌

David Lloyd George.

ده‌یڤد لۆید جۆرج

Nelson Mandela gets two.

Why the difference? I'll tell you why the difference.

جیاوازی چیه‌؟ .من پێتان ده‌ڵێم

Because America was from the outset a nation of wave after wave of immigrants,

چونكه‌ ئه‌مه‌ریكا له‌ سه‌ره‌تا ,شه‌پۆڵ دوای شه‌پۆڵی كۆچبه‌ر

so it had to create an identity

پێویستیان به‌وه‌ بوو شوناسێك دروست بكه‌ن

which it did by telling a story

which you learned at school, you read on memorials

Britain until recently wasn't a nation of immigrants,

so it could take identity for granted.

The trouble is now

كێشه‌كه‌ ئه‌وه‌یه‌ ئێستا

that two things have happened which shouldn't have happened together.

The first thing is in the West we've stopped telling this story

یه‌كه‌م شت له‌ ڕۆژئاوا ئه‌م چیڕۆكه‌ ناڵێنه‌وه‌

of who we are and why,

،ئێمه‌ كێین وبۆ

even in America.

.ته‌نانه‌ت له‌ ئه‌مه‌ریكا

And at the same time,

،له‌ هه‌مان كاتدا

immigration is higher than it's ever been before.

.كۆچبه‌ری زیاتره‌ له‌ جاران

So when you tell a story and your identity is strong,

كاتێک کە چیڕۆكێك ده‌ڵێی و شوناسه‌كه‌ت به‌هێزه‌

you can welcome the stranger,

،ده‌توانیت به‌خێرهاتنی غه‌ریبه‌ بكه‌یت

but when you stop telling the story,

،به‌ڵام ئەگەر بوەستی له‌ گوتنی چیڕۆكه‌كه‌ت

your identity gets weak

شوناست لاوازده‌بێت

and you feel threatened by the stranger.

.ده‌ترسێی له‌ غه‌ریبه‌كه‌

And that's bad.

.ئه‌مه‌ش خراپه‌

I tell you, Jews have been scattered and dispersed and exiled for 2,000 years.

جووه‌كان په‌رت بوون و دوور خرانه‌وه‌ .بۆماوه‌ی 2000 ساڵ

We never lost our identity.

.شوناسی خۆمان له‌ده‌ست نه‌دا

Why? Because at least once a year,

،بۆ؟ چونكه‌ ساڵێ جارێ

on the festival of Passover,

،له‌ ڤیستیڤاڵی پاسۆڤه‌ر

we told our story and we taught it to our children

چیرۆكی خۆمان فێری منداڵه‌كانمان ده‌كرد

and we ate the unleavened bread of affliction

هه‌ویری بێ هه‌وێنی ناخۆشی ده‌خۆین

and tasted the bitter herbs of slavery.

.و تامی گیایی تاڵی كۆیله‌ی ده‌كه‌ین

So we never lost our identity.

.هه‌رگیز شوناسی خۆمان له‌ ده‌ست نه‌داوه‌

I think collectively

پێم وایه‌ به‌ كۆده‌نگی

we've got to get back to telling our story,

پێویسته‌ بگه‌ڕێینه‌وه‌ بۆ ,گێرانه‌وه‌ی چیرۆكه‌كانمان

who we are, where we came from,

،ئێمه‌ كێین، له‌ كوێوه‌ هاتووین

what ideals by which we live.

.به‌ چ مه‌به‌ستێك ده‌ژین

And if that happens,

،وه‌ گه‌ر ڕوبدات

we will become strong enough

به‌ پێی پێویست به‌هێز ده‌بین

to welcome the stranger and say,

،به‌خێرهاتنی غه‌ریبه‌یه‌ك بكه‌ین وبڵین

"Come and share our lives,

،وه‌ره‌ و هاوبه‌شی ژیانمان به‌'

share our stories,

،هاوبه‌شی چیرۆكه‌كانمان به‌

share our aspirations and dreams."

'هاوبه‌شی خه‌ون و ئامانجمان به‌

That is the us of identity.

'ئه‌وه‌ شوناسی 'ئێمه‌یه‌

And finally, the us of responsibility.

.له‌ كۆتایدا به‌رپرسیاره‌تی ئێمه‌

Do you know something?

هیچ شتێك ده‌زانی؟

My favorite phrase in all of politics,

په‌سه‌ندترین وته‌ی سیاسی لای من

very American phrase,

،ده‌سته‌واژه‌ی ئه‌مریكی

is: "We the people."

'ئێمه‌ی خه‌ڵك'

Why "we the people?"

'بۆ 'ئێمه‌ خه‌ڵكی ؟

Because it says that we all share collective responsibility

چونكه‌ ده‌ڵێ هه‌مومان هاوبه‌شی به‌رپرسیاره‌تین

for our collective future.

.بۆ داهاتویه‌كی هاوبه‌ش

And that's how things really are and should be.

شته‌كان ده‌بێت چۆنبن .و به‌راستی چۆنن

Have you noticed how magical thinking

هیچ جادویه‌كت به‌دی كردووه‌

has taken over our politics?

کە زاڵ بووه‌ به‌سه‌ر سیاسه‌تمان؟

So we say, all you've got to do is elect this strong leader

ئێمه‌ ده‌ڵێین پێویسته‌ سه‌ركرده‌یه‌كی به‌هێزهه‌ڵبژێرین

and he or she will solve all our problems for us.

.ئه‌و كێشه‌كانمان چاره‌سه‌ر ده‌كات

Believe me, that is magical thinking.

باوه‌ڕم پێبكه‌ن ئه‌مه‌ باوه‌ڕێكی .ناواقیعیه‌

:ئینجا كه‌سانی توندره‌و ده‌بینین

And then we get the extremes:

the far right, the far left,

،پارێزكاران و چه‌پڕه‌وان

the extreme religious and the extreme anti-religious,

،تونده‌ڕه‌وی ئاینی و دژه‌ ئاینی

the far right dreaming of a golden age that never was,

خه‌ونی پارێزكاران بۆچاخی زێرێن ،كه‌ هه‌رگیز نەبووە

the far left dreaming of a utopia that never will be

وە خه‌ونی چه‌پره‌وان بۆ یوتۆپیا ،کە هه‌رگیز نابێت

and the religious and anti-religious equally convinced

ئاینیپه‌روه‌ر ودژه‌ ئاینی باوه‌ریان هاتووه‌ کە

that all it takes is God or the absence of God

وجودی خودا یان غیابی خودا

to save us from ourselves.

.بۆ پاراستنمان له‌ خۆمان پێویستە

That, too, is magical thinking,

،هەروەها ئه‌مەش بیرۆكه‌یه‌كی خه‌یاڵیه‌

because the only people who will save us from ourselves

چونكه‌ تاكه‌ كه‌سێ كه‌ ڕزگارمان ده‌كات له‌ خۆمان

is we the people,

،ئه‌وا ئێمه‌ خه‌ڵكه‌كه‌

all of us together.

.هه‌مومان به‌یه‌كه‌وه‌

And when we do that,

،كه‌ی ئه‌وه‌ ده‌كه‌ین

and when we move from the politics of me

كه‌ له‌ سیاسه‌تی منه‌وه‌ برۆین

to the politics of all of us together,

،به‌ره‌و سیاسه‌تی ئێمه‌ به‌یه‌كه‌وه‌

we rediscover those beautiful, counterintuitive truths:

ئه‌و ڕاستیه‌ جوان وناژیرانه‌ :بۆمان ده‌رده‌كه‌وێت

that a nation is strong

كه‌ نه‌ته‌وه‌ به‌هێزه‌

when it cares for the weak,

،كه‌ گرنگی به‌ لاوازه‌كان ده‌دات

that it becomes rich

ده‌وڵه‌مه‌ند ده‌بێت

when it cares for the poor,

،كه‌ گرنگی به‌ هه‌ژاره‌كان ده‌دات

it becomes invulnerable when it cares about the vulnerable.

به‌هێز ده‌بێت كه‌ گرنگی به‌ .بێدەسەڵاتان ده‌دات

That is what makes great nations.

So here is my simple suggestion.

لێرە پێشنیارێكی بچوكم هه‌یه‌

Do a search and replace operation

بگه‌ڕێ و كرداره‌كانت بگۆره‌

on the text of your mind,

،به‌و ده‌قه‌ی له‌ مێشكته‌

and wherever you encounter the word "self,"

له‌ هه‌ركوێ ڕوبه‌ڕوی وشه‌ی "من" بوویت

substitute the word "other."

به‌ وشه‌ی "ئه‌ویتر" بیگۆڕه‌وه‌

So instead of self-help, other-help;

له‌بری خۆیارمه‌تی دان، یارمه‌تی دانی ئه‌وانیتر

instead of self-esteem, other-esteem.

.له‌ جیاتی قه‌دری خۆت، قه‌دری ئه‌وانی تر

،ئه‌گه‌ر ئه‌وه‌ بكه‌یت

And if you do that,

you will begin to feel the power

هه‌ست به‌ هێز ده‌كه‌یت

of what for me is one of the most moving sentences

بۆمن یه‌كێكه‌ له‌ ڕسته‌ گرنگه‌كان

in all of religious literature.

.له‌ هه‌موو ئه‌ده‌بیاتی ئاینی

"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

هه‌رچه‌نده‌ به‌ دۆڵی سێبه‌ری" ،مه‌رگدا دەڕۆم

I will fear no evil,

هەست بە نەگیرسی ناکەم،

for you are with me."

چونکە تۆ لەگەڵ من دا دەبی".

We can face any future without fear

ده‌توانین ڕوبه‌ڕوی داهاتوو ببینه‌وه‌ به‌بێ ترس

so long as we know

لەو کاتەی کە هه‌مومان بیزانین

we will not face it alone.

کە به‌ته‌نها ڕوبه‌روی نابینه‌وه‌.

So for the sake of the future "you,"

لە پێناوی "توی داهاتو"،

together let us strengthen

به‌یكه‌وه‌ با به‌هێزی بكه‌ین

the future "us."

"ئێمەی داهاتو".
